  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

Sens Prepare for Tampa, Deadline Looms

The Ottawa Senators were back on the practice ice this afternoon, ahead of tomorrow night's match up with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

With just 24 games to go, each night is taking on increased significance for the Sens as they currently sit 7th in the Eastern Conference. Ottawa will play a crucial back to back this week that begins with tomorrow night in Tampa Bay and Wednesday against the Florida Panthers.

As the Sens hit the road, the players have been joined by some special guests as the team embarks on the annual Father/Son Road Trip. You would hope the team gets an added boost heading into important match ups this week.

Here is how the Sens lined up at today's practice.

Michalek-Spezza-Butler
Greening-Turris-Alfie
Daugavins-Smith-Condra
Foligno-O'Brien-Neil

Phillips-Gonchar
Kuba-Karlsson
Cowen-Lee

Craig Anderson will start tomorrow night in Tampa Bay.

While the Sens have a relatively light schedule on the ice, it is expected that the drama will pick up a little bit off the ice with Bryan Murray and his staff expected to open negotiations with RFA defenceman, Erik Karlsson in the next week or so.

On a surprising Sens team, Karlsson has been the most impressive of all.  Karlsson leads all NHL defenceman with 50 points, 11 points clear of his closest rival. While his defensive game still has some room for improvement, he has been much better in that area this year. At just 21 years of age, Karlsson has learned how to use body position and a quick stick as a way to make up for a lack of size.

Depending on who you talk to, Erik Karlsson could actually be a Norris Trophy candidate this season.

The length of the contract is still up for debate at this point although I would expect long term is the most likely scenario. With uncertainty surrounding the next collective bargaining agreement (CBA) this is going to be a delicate negotiation for both sides.  Early speculation has the cap hit coming in somewhere between $5.0-$5.5 million a season. What do you think Karlsson ends up signing for?

  • According to @habinsideout1, the Sens have a scout in attendance at tonight's Hurricanes/Canadiens game.  The Senators are one of the team rumoured to be interested in Tuomo Ruutu should the Hurricanes decide to move him.  Important to note that Murray has been pretty clear he will not overpay for this type of player.  Hat tip to the folks at The 6th Sens for passing this long.  In an interesting twist, Ruutu suffered an upper body injury in tonight's game.
  • The TSN Panel talked about some of the teams and players that could be in play leading up to the deadline.  Bob McKenzie suggests that Filip Kuba could be had and that players like Butler, Lee and Wiercioch could be used as trade bait. No real surprises there.
  • Mentioned this the other day but here is the video tribute that was featured the other night when Mike Fisher made his return to Ottawa.

Theres a lot of chatter saying that center ice is free this week. The FLA OTT game is on that tomorrow night. Not sure what providers have it free this week, can anyone confirm if bell has it?

I have been so impressed with Karlsson. Finally, a blue chip prospect that has fully materialized!

Karlsson is the first prospect in a WHILE that has been drafted, materialized, and will sign to a long term deal. Good to finally see an internally produced star on our team.

Norris candidate for sure!

Big scoreboard night for the Sens.

Loss by the Habs, more importantly, the Caps.
This week the "games in hand" gap will be closed a little bit.

We just gotta make sure we win these next two!
I have a feeling the tougher game will be tomorrow night...

Go Sens!!!

I hope karlsson signs for 4 years at 5.75/yr. Chirp, have u heard if murray and the team are scouting and have interests in any NCAA free agents this year. As for trade deadline, I think Murray will get the work done a few days before and kuba will be gone. I do hope murray picks up an extra first some how as he needs to add to the goaltending depth.

Chirp is right, the game TOMORROW against the stinky Panthers is not televised, not even in Florida.

I have a feeling the game tonight is going to be a blood bath, I expect the Sens to be fully charged with lots of jump and really take it to the Tampa D and fill the net in this tilt.

Prediction: 6-2 Sens.

We'll see how 'chippy' it gets.

Ruutu would only make sense if we planned on signing him to 2+ year deal. He would make our second line scary good, but as a rental would be a waste. His 'injury' would be a blessing in disguise if it prevents us for overpaying for him with no plans to extend.

I think it lists ALL games but as you can see there is no network broadcasting it, thereby nothing for Center Ice to broadcast...

Huge games tonight and tomorrow,
after a disappointing home stretch and loss to Edm, these two games are must wins if we want a chance at the playoffs.
Question has to be asked, if we cannot beat a struggling Tampa team tonight, with our playoff hopes on the line, do we really deserve a playoff spot, and really what kind of damage can we realistically expect to do, if we squeak in.

If we lose these games, I really would like us to focus on moving out some older expensive players, for future players who can help us in the next couple of years... IMO of course

OK i hate trade rumors and make believe ones but I just have to throw this out here. Partly because I'm ahuge Nash fan, but Spezza needs a star winger, and with Alfie coming off the books next year, but really only $1 mill in real dollars we can afford him under melnyk budget

To CLB:
Zibanejad (with turris playing well we don't need a 2LC)
Foligno (Moveable, and lose some salary in the process)
1st round 2013 (weak draft, probably in the 16-22 range)
Lee (See Foligno)

TO Ott:
Nash (7.8 until 201-2018) (We lose Kuba/Alfie/Gonc har contracts within 2 years)
CLB 3rd pick

Pipe dream I know, but It would be an amazing top 6 of greening-spezza-nash

ABSOLUTELY.

I would strongly assume that Nash would like to suit up in Canada. Calgary and Montreal are in cap hell and have little to offer, Vancouver is tight too and probably reluctant to make that big a piece for another big piece. Edmonton is still too young in the rebuild probably for Nash, plus not the ultimate destination market for many players...

So if Nash decides his fate, wants Canada and the best fits would be Ottawa/Toronto with an outside shot for Winterpeg, all three teams would be crazy not to kick the tires.

As much as I'd love to see Nash on Spezza's wing, I don't think that deal gets it done. They are going to want a kings ransom for him. I think it would take Zbad, Michalek and 2 first round picks. They need to get someone of Michalek's calibre back in any trade or I don't think they make the deal. It would be a huge price to pay and I'm not sure it would be worth it.

@DenisVial If he determines where he wants to go though, is leaning towards Canada, and it comes down to only a small number of teams where there is a good fit, then it's a matter of who can put the better package together.

What is the "best" Leafs could offer? Schenn + Kadri+ a first? Could we match something like that without mortgaging the future?

The Ruutu injury couldn't come at a worse time for Carolina because I really feel that they were looking to sign him and shop him at the deadline. He may come cheap now as he may not be able to play right away, but to me this is a blessing for Ottawa as maybe this will keep Ottawa from being interested. We've taken too many gambles on players with injury troubled backgrounds and if we are picking up someone, I would expect that player is someone the team wants in the lineup now, not next season and in the future. Let's face it, Ruutu has played two 82 game seasons, this was looking like it could be his 3rd (scratch that idea). He's only scored 20 or more goals twice and he's been in the NHL 8 seasons. We talk about needing a scoring winger, Ruutu is more of a passer and his stats will show that. It's not a knock against him, he's just not the type of winger Ottawa needs.

I sincerely hope you're right and it's a bidding war between only a few teams. I absolutely think we have the picks and prospects to make a legit offer for Nash without mortgaging the future. I just don't want to lose any roster players like Michalek or Turris to make it happen. We know that Karlson and Cowen are untouchable so I'm not worried Murray would dangle them. I wonder if it would be more enticing for Howson if he could dump Methot's salary on us as well?

I agree with the other guys about Rick Nash Murray should inquire about what it take to get Rick Nash.

Rick Nash would be a very good fit to play along side Spezaa Rick Nash would be the perfect winger for Spezza Nash would create room for Spezza and I think they would be a even of a dangerous duo then Heatley and Spezza were. Also if Murray were to give Howson a call and lay out the ground work for a off season move for Nash that type deal would be a better off season deal!

Come on Murray trade for Rick Nash

and.....headles s chicken season is back on amongst sens fans.

while risk nash would be a sweet addition to spezza's wing, does bringing him in make the team better overall? I dont think so. nash is not what ottawa needs. its one more stud D-man (atleast) and one more stud goalie prospect.

the rest is all set. enough decent forwards in the pipeline to populate a brand new roster, some decent d prospects to fill out the lower rungs. one stud goalie in the system. stud rookie d-men on the team already.

its depth that wins it all, not singular individual elite acts. Ottawa would have to give up a lot of depth for Nash, both on defense and up front and maybe even in goal (who knows-maybe CLS wants their pick in Lehner back-see vermette trade).

This is a rebuild people, and its been a good one to start with already. lets not dick around with a good thing. next year and onwards, the kind of young scoring depth ottawa is going to boast up front.......who knows what can happen. more reason to stick with the plan, get the d-men we need, get the backup goalies that we need and go for the kills.

also, one of the most whacky ideas I have heard is getting into a bidding war with the leafs. the leafs will always give up more, and they have the depth on D to give up a helluva lot more. Ottawa doesnt have that depth on D yet and is not really in a guaranteed spot right now to give up depth on fowards. and besides, toronto's fans, management and ownership has the appetite to take the risk. Ottawa does not have the same appetite. don't forget, they have been losing for a very very long time yet have only gone through three coaches since the lockout, ottawa on the other hand has gone through murray-paddock- murray-hartsbur g-clouston. just shows how much appetite we have for losing, even though we have missed the show only twice since the lockout.

NO to Nash.

I think we sign Karlsson to a 6 year 33Million dollar contract. Something in that range.

As for the Rick Nash rumors, I pulled his stats from the last five years.

RICK NASH STATS (LAST 5YRS) GP G A P PM +-
2007-08 Columbus Blue Jackets NHL 80 38 31 69 95 2
2008-09 Columbus Blue Jackets NHL 78 40 39 79 52 11
2009-10 Columbus Blue Jackets NHL 76 33 34 67 58 -2
2010-11 Columbus Blue Jackets NHL 75 32 34 66 34 2
2011-12 Columbus Blue Jackets NHL 56 18 21 39 28 -22

IMO I don't think any team in the league will want to give 2 first rounders, a prospect and established 1st/2nd liner (With the exeption of the Maple laffs i.e. Phil Kessel). And I would be ashamed if BM gives that much up for a guy who has been a -22 this season. If the asking price is something more reasonable, maybe. It would definitely be interesting to see Nash along side Spezza, maybe our next pizza line ? I'm quite curious to know what you guys would give up for Rick Nash and if you would even consider aquiring him at all, any thoughts ?

if it ain't broke, dont fix it. acquiring Nash means ottawa will guaranteed have to give up depth now and in the future. plus, having a pizza line reincarnated does not guarantee anything (remember 2007 finals people??). We just got Turris and he will need to be signed soon too. Karlsson, Cowen will also demand good salaries. Sens have a ton of prospects coming up and in the pipeline. Lehner will eventually need a contract also. even if the cap numbers work, ottawa would have to give up future picks, prospects and roster player(s) for Nash. I think its overpayment for an unnecessary cause and overpayment for the player himself.

my vote : No trade for Nash. not needed. this team is being coached on a depth model, its already started its rebuild on a depth model and it needs to stick to it.

First on my list, even though he is playing well, would have to be Kuba. We should be able to get decent return, and I can assure you that Kuba will be offered an inflated contract in the summer, that we SHOULD not match, and I am also certain he would not consider a home town discount.

Kuba should only be moved for picks, there is no point taking only salary back for him. Gonchar for salary on an expiring contract would work because we lose the extra year.

But you should remember that we aren't as deep on the blueline as some people like to think we are.

Side question for the east coast Sens fans:

I'm in Halifax for the next couple of days. They have Sportsnet East here but are the games subjected to regional restrictions? Or can you watch Sens games on regular cable?

Need to know whether I can watch it from my hotel room or if I need to go to an establishment.

Thanks!

For those who want Nash, its a pretty safe bet he'll perform here unlike other star players that may be available.

Spezza already has chemistry with Nash as they were the #1 scoring line in the world championships for team Canada a few years back.

This could ignite Spezza and put him on a tear and a serious consideration for the next Olymipic team as a pair or dynamic duo, this could put Spezza on an elite status he once had playing with Alfredson and heater.

just a thought, i'm not saying lets do anything to get rick Nash, but if he's available at say a Michalek,Folign o and a 1st (2013) at tops then i consider him somewhat affordable.

I have been away from the site for a while and this is hilarious to me. Spezzafan honestly I read your post from yesterday where...haha... once again you've listed the SENS should be after Eric Fehr. You have posted the same thing for years. I would check this site everyday a year and two years ago and it was always Andrew Ladd, Eric Fehr and Eric Cole your takes are pointless because we've all heard the same thing for years now. Hey man the JETS are back the have Ladd and Fehr just get a jersey and find their blog site, or stick around and we'll all have our fun.

P.S. Nash carries the puck too much to be on Spezza's line, if we added him he'd play with Turris.

if its Bell...there should be no restrictions... I am in NB and when I had sportsnet east, they never blacked out an ottawa game, but the other sportsnets were blacked out for their games, not that I minded that anyway.

Dealing for Nash would go against what Melnick and Murray have been preaching for a while now and I don't see Columbus asking less than 2 1rst round, a prospect and a solid player.

Look at the Bruins, they don't have the "superstar" offense player à la Nash and they won the Cup. What they do have is a perfectly balanced team. We could consider Chara and Thomas as superstars but that's it.

We already have Spezza and Karlsson that would fit in this category. Let's balance all 4 lines with talents of all sorts (snipers, playmakers & grinders) and we will be good to fight for the Cup in 2-3 seasons from now.

Let's stick with THE PLAN.
