  • Spezza Ready to Return

(UPDATE 2:21 PM)- Paul MacLean has confirmed what has been speculated the last couple days- Jason Spezza is ready to return to the Ottawa Senators line up.  The Sens number one centre has been out of the line up since January 27.  A huge boost for this team as they return to Scotiabank Place for Game 3.

Game Day in LA and The Week Ahead

After falling at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday afternoon, the Sens now have two more games lined up on Monday and Tuesday of this week before breaking for the NHL All Star Game.

First up- the surging Los Angeles Kings tonight at 10:30 PM.  The Senators will then close out their pre- All Star schedule with a Tuesday night game against the slumping Phoenix Coyotes.

Paul MacLean's group was on the ice yesterday and he indicated there will be a couple changes to the Sens line up against the Kings.  Defenceman Mark Borowiecki will play his second game in the NHL and take the place of Matt Carkner on the blue line.

Bobby Butler will replace Andre Petersson and skate on the team's top line. Here is how the Sens lined up at the game day skate in LA.

Michalek-Spezza-Butler
Foligno-Turris-Alfredsson
Greening-Smith-Neil
Daugavins-Konopka-Condra

Kuba-Karlsson
Cowen-Gonchar
Phillips-Borowiecki

One place where there will not be a change is in goal.  Craig Anderson will make his 13th consecutive start and league leading 46th of the season.  There is a chance Alex Auld sees some action before the All Star break but it will really depend how Anderson and the Sens do tonight.

___________________________________________________________________

After a tough back to back, the focus will shift to the All Star Game festivities planned over the weekend.

On Thursday, Daniel Alfredsson and Zdeno Chara will select their teams for the All Star Weekend.  Alfie has been joined by Henrik Lundqvist and Joffrey Lupul will help out Zdeno Chara.  The event will be televised on TSN and held at the Casino Lac Lemay.

Also kicking off on Thursday is the Scotiabank NHL Fan Fair at the Ottawa Convention Centre.  The event will offer three days of interactive games and attractions, special appearances, trophy and memorabilia displays, music, food and dozens of other dynamic activities.  Go here for more information on that event.

On Friday, the Energizer Night Skate will take place down on the Rideau Canal.  Thousands of skaters light up the historic Rideau Canal with proceeds going to the Sens Foundation.  To learn how you can participate in this unique event, click here.

The Skills Competition goes on Saturday night from 7-9 PM.  Then the next day, Team Alfredsson goes head to head with Team Chara in the NHL All Star Game, which gets underway at 4:00 PM.

This week is gonna be awesome!

I haven't seen "Boro-Cop" play, and I would like to know what other thinks of him? Critiques? How's his "game"?, etc.

Actually if you look at his stats line, not much. If you watched him on the ice, you saw a poised d-man who was in position and made 3 or 4 very nice outlet passes. It's only one game so no need to get overly excited, but if he plays the way the Sens expect him to play, then Carkner becomes expendable at the end of the year.

I was going to say... I missed the first ~10 minutes of the game because I was at soccer, but shortly after I tuned in, I saw the BoroCop just level someone to the ice behind our net and I instantly fell in love. So, at least 1 of those 2 registered hits were worth more to me than the stat suggests. :D

Hey Chirp,

How about an ASG fantasy contest? Something along the lines of picking the individual and team winners of the skills contests... plus picking 5 skaters + goalie for the game (pts, PIMs, saves, etc).

Will make the ASG even more fun to watch... ;-)

Isn't the general assumption that one of Kuba or Lee will be gone at the end of this season? If that's the case I believe they will keep carkner around as dman 7 or 8.

The guy is seemingly adored in the dressing room and I doubt you would hear a peep from him in a negative sense if he was a healthy scratch from time to time. Team guys ARE important to have around the place. Add that to the fact he's a local boy and we know Murray loves those.

Plus Carkner provides valuable pugilist skills and with more not less young players around next year I think Carkner signs another cheap 1 or 2 year contract.

It's Monday, and the Sens have the biggest of the back to back games tonight. While most of us don't get a chance to see the LA Kings much, they are are very underrated team, who have continually been able to get wins, and a lot of it is because of the play of Quick. Quick, who is finally starting to get respect in the leauge as an elite goalie, has a been posting solid numbers the last 4 seasons, with his best being this year. Ottawa will need to test him early and often, as LA relies heavy on his solid performances night in and night out.

I'm looking for 9MM to finally hit the score sheet tonight. I hope he has his legs back for this game. With Quick and Andy both playing some great hockey right now I'm expecing a close game, maybe even an OT winner. I'm saying Sens win 2-1 in OT.

Go Sens Go!!

Kuba and Carkner are both UFAs and both will be gone next year (unless the young D all need more time to develop and we keep Carks as a cheap depth guy).

Or of course if we end up packaging away one of the other D in order to get a long-term solution for our top 6 (which is unlikely but still possible I guess).

I don't think that's the same thing. The game is on TV. I don't think anyone expects Regin to show up in California. The very least he could do is watch the game, don't you think? If he is well enough to go tubing (speculation at this point), he's surely well enough to watch the game and encourage his team mates in spirit.

If my work was on TV and I was getting paid a few millie, I would definitely watch while i was sick. Especially if I cared about what was going on that day. As it is now, I often times phone into meetings when I'm sick to listen in and sometimes (depending on the importance of the matter) participate. The defense next year in my opinion should look like this:

Karlsson - Kuba
Gonchar - Cowen
Phillips - Borowiecki
(Insert Rookie or FA here)

Cut ties with Lee and Carkner, especially Carkner.

I think Regin's duties are to rehab and workout the way that the sens doctors have advised him to do (agree not sure that tubing is the way forward but would imagine he had cleared that with the doctoirs at the very least - if indeed it was him that was doing it).

I don't think his duties are to watch every game and cheer his team on. We think it is but that's because we are fans and therefore irrational idiots most of the time.

This point discrepancy bullshit is infuriating.

What kind of league do they have where a different number of points are awarded depending on the outcome? They should keep overtime as is but award a team 3 pts for a regulation win.

You think teams wouldn't try harder near the end of the third period as well? Maybe battling for a playoff spot and they can gun it and try for 3 instead of maybe only getting 1 point.

God I hope they do this, would make the playoff races a lot more titillating to boot.

Back to back against the Laffs, hopefully Nabakov keeps up his stellar play against them. Burke would definitely make a panic trade this weekend if they lose both.

younglings!!!!

on a side note - i wouldn't want us to give up anything at all to get a different back-up. Murray already made it clear that if Anderson got a lengthy injury Lenhner would be given the majority of his games.

we might be riding Anderson too hard (that's what she said) but whilst he's happy to get the games let's carry on. We are in a good enough position that starting Auld every so often isn't going to hurt us this much.

LMAO, one of the headlines on TSN:

SENATORS LOOK FOR FIRST WIN IN LOS ANGELES IN OVER 12 YEARS

(Sports Network) - The Senators had a club-record road point streak halted over the weekend. Avoiding consecutive road losses could be problematic with a trip to Los Angeles now on the docket.

Ottawa looks to win at Los Angeles for the first time in over 12 years as they battle a Kings club that has been racking up points on its own.

Just negative vibes, they mention our 11 game winning streak but at every chance mention that is got snapped...

You can only look at players coming out of ELC which I don't believe Goligowski is?

Even if he is, we all know karlsson isover 6 mill a year so this contract really has no impact

Karlsson's agent has said himself that they'll be seeking a contract in the same range as Mike Green's 5.25 a yer. He won't get over 6.

I don't even have the time to get worked up over TSN's bias because I spend my media-hating efforts focusing on our local rags Brennan and Stevenson. They're so utterly useless and yet so high on themselves.

Brennan actually got PAID (allegedly) to author a story on Alfie getting his hair cut in LA today. WTF. Nice stab at journalism buddy. Right on par with your 187 articles concerning the crappy old scoreboard.

on a side note - i wouldn't want us to give up anything at all to get a different back-up.

What worries me is the year Anderson took the starting job in Colorado, they weren't expected to do much. He stood on his head in the regular season playing 71 games with 38 wins, 25 L's. Great season if you ask me, Colorado managed to sneak into the playoffs but suffered a 1st round exit 4 games to 2 vs San Jose. Anderson played all those games. It's situations like that, where I'd like to see Anderson get some rest before the playoffs start. True backup who can jump in and win games when needed. Auld has played well for Ottawa in the past, but with only 1 win this season, it's a little scary to say the least.

Guess what? Guess who is reffing the game in LA tonight?

Mr. O'Rourke.... so how many penalties will the Sens take tonight? How many PP's will they get? Will he look to 'payback' McLean for outing him?

Anyway.. for whatever reason.. Tim Thomas was not with the Bruins when they went to the White House today...no comment as to why.

I agree with the comments on TSN today... they try to make the Sens look as bad as they can... haven't won in LA for 11 yrs.... not once do they mention they only play there every 2 yrs... Also if you do notice on TV... so much time is spent on the Leafs.. like the nickname for Gardiner... and hardly any spent on the other Cdn teams. Why don't they just call themselves Leafs TV?

Today's comments have to be one of the slowest I've seen in awhile. Normally it's post after post of trade thoughts, team expectations, etc. Kind of nice in a way, but I'm use to having more to read.

Since it's a little slower, I thought I'd mention how great Chirps Hockey Pool (SensChirp Hockey Two) has been. We don't get much talk here about it, but I wanted to say I'm pretty happy with how it's going. After selecting Perry with my 2nd overall, I was criticised heavily for it. I'll admit I had thoughts of moving him early on, but I'm happy I stuck wth him because he's slowly getting into form.

The reason I brought this up, has anyone tracked the performance of Chicago's call up Andrew Shaw? I just plugged him into my lineup, he's been stellar in his 10 games. Belleville native, another one of those shorter guys, who is never expected to excel at the NHL level due to his size. It's good to see players like that overcome the obstacles and show people you can make it, regardless of size.

The guy has one 40 point season under his belt and this year hes not even close.

If this is the bar being set for a puck-moving D of his calibre, then were in trouble with Karlsson.

That's true, but not accurate and it fits into no definition of news judgement. That fact that the Ottawa Senators haven't won in LA since 2000 is nowhere NEAR the most interesting or relavent thing about this game. It's a footnote at best.

Unrelated to this topic, but I thought Id share a little story from my weekend.

Was watching the Sens and Ducks game Sat aft at a local watering hole and the place was full of Sens fans glued to the TV. There was this one guy, looked like a trucker that just woke up from a comma still wearing his clothes from the 90s. Anyway, the guy was by himself cheering loud and proud everytime the Ducks touched the puck, and when the Ducks scored he cheered for the whole bar to hear. Drunk bastard wouldn't stop.

When the game was over he said "Yeah baby...thats what Im talking about. Now...we got 4 games in hand and only 9 points to go." - I had to stop and think about that comment. Then I grabbed a Ottawa Sun that was sitting on the bar counter and flipped to the standings. Yup...there it was like I suspected, the Leafs were 9 points below us and 4 games in hand. This moron was a Leafs cheering his heart for the ducks to beat our team.

I suddenly wasn't mad at the guy anymore...I actually felt a little sad for him. What a pathetic thing for a Leafs fan to do...judge the success of their team based on how they stack up against ONE other team in the league.

What the hell did Leaf fans do before the Sens were around?

Imagine how much more pathetic it would be if the Sens did not fall short in their Stanley Cup run? i think they were happier than the Ducks fans that we lost. sucks for them that they can only take pleasure when we don't succeed, given that their failures are a given.

had we won, they might have still said, "well, despite your Cup, you have never beaten us in the playoffs" which is true, but the Sens fan reply would of course then be "you have to make the playoffs every once in a while for that to even matter...."

1 point (assist) in his last 5 for michalek, I cant see the stats past previous 5 games

He is too inconsistent

By the looks of it, he isn't gonna get much done in this game either

Im tired of hot cold first line guys hiding in the shadows most games

You'd be hard pressed to find a hand full of players in the league that don't go through streaky stretches. The whole team has been playing way above expectations thus far. I have faith that Milo and Foligno will battle through this "tough" stretch and get their points. Let's be realistic though...

That was a horrible period by the Sens. They had a couple decent chances on the pp but the only got a bunch of perimeter shots 5 on 5. Not going to win games with that kind of offense. Neil and Smith need to have a couple good energy shifts to get the guys into these game. Start hitting everything and anything. That's what the Kings are doing.

I actually thought they've played a decent road game so far. Some good scoring chances, I think Smithy hit the posts, good puck movement on the PP, and the breakouts for the most part have been clean.

I agree that the reffing has been brutal but I have to say that although they put on some good pressure, you can tell they weren't feeling it as they're rushing their passes and gripping their sticks a bit. I thought Turris was by far our best player in the first.
