  • Game Day- A Must Win

Win or go home.  It’s that simple.  As for the first time this season, the Ottawa Senators find themselves in a true “must win” game.

After a disappointing effort in Game 4 at Scotiabank Place, the Sens look to extend their season in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semi-final with the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Nobody is giving this team a chance after an ugly loss on Wednesday night and the Pesky Sens wouldn’t have it any other way.

Game Day- Red Hot Sens Visit Hurricanes

Last night it was Bobby Butler that played the role of overtime hero as he converted a pass from Kyle Turris to give the Sens a dramatic 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers.

The Senators won't have much time to enjoy the victory though as they are right back in action tonight against Eric Staal and the Carolina Hurricanes.

It has become the norm for this hockey club but you have to admire the fight they showed against the Southeast leading Panthers.  After a late tying goal by the visitors, the Sens refused to quit and were able to pick up a crucial extra point in overtime.

Obviously a huge goal for Bobby Butler who has struggled for most of the season.  Paul MacLean played a bit of a hunch in the extra session sending Butler and Turris out as the forward pair in the 4 on 4 situation.  For the second straight game, the newest Senators, Kyle Turris picked up an assist on the game winning goal.

Another strong effort from the Captain who picked up a goal and a couple assists.  Alfredsson now has 399 goals in his career.

Last night's win helped the Sens pull into 7th in the Eastern Conference, tied at 38 points with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Paul MacLean will make a change to his line up against the Hurricanes as call up Mike Hoffman will play his first game in the NHL.  The Sens did not have a morning skate this morning so the line combinations are still up in the air at this point.

Brian Lee will come out of the Ottawa line up and Craig Anderson will get the start in goal.

  • Some good news on the injury front as Milan Michalek passed his baseline tests and has been cleared to return but will do the right thing and wait until after the break.
  • Mentioned this on Twitter but apparently Bryan Murray spoke with the officials after the game last night over what he felt was an extremely questionable call on Nick Foligno.

Chirp one thing you did leave out of your post is that the Sens managed to win that game with only 10 forwards. That's a pretty difficult thing to do in my opinion. Very impressive.

And how about Alfie eh? 39 years old and he's still playing at a high level. The last 10 games or so he has looked as good as ever. He's slowly creeping up on a point per game.

bit disappointed to see Lee sit, I think he had a decent game yesterday and interestingly had more ice time than carkner too, so not so clear as to why he is being sat?

any ideas chirp?

Great point. Losing Foligno to that questionable call could have buried the Senators. They refused to quit.

I'm happy to see Mike Hoffman called up. His numbers in Bingo aren't all that impressive but no ones numbers down there are. I thought Hoffman had a very strong training camp and now he's being rewarded for it.

The funny thing about this is I imagine most people expected Da Costa to get the call-up. In my opinion this is a pretty strong message to send to Da Costa that he has to work harder to get back into the NHL. Unless he is injured right now, in which case forget everything I just said.

I just have one question/commen t on reffing. If they are going to call light touches "hooking" they need to be as consistent calling the recipients chicken wing on the stick - a "holding the stick penalty" and embellishment/d iving "an unsportsmanlike penalty"

I found Condra's penalty frustrating...F oligno's was a different issue all together and very frustrating

Good for Hoffman. Looking forward to seeing him play.

I don't think its a "message" to DaCosta though. His numbers in Bingo are decent relative to the team's performance. And in the time he spent with the big club, his play was as good, if not better than Butler. He's just on the butt end of a more flexible contract IMO. I think bringing Hoffman up is more a question of having enough centremen and wanting to get wingers called up.

I hope for his sake that he makes an impact in his 5-8 minutes of ice time. With Winchester and Regin out, there's an opportunity for a long lasting stay.

And how about Mark Stone!

Quietly becoming one of the top players on Team Canada. 3 pts last night! This guy is going to be a beast for us in the near future.

Things are looking up in Ottawa folks!

Pretty soon Tookie will have to read a newspaper to find things to rage about!

It's too bad Petersson is injured as he may have been in line for a call up. I wouldn't mind seeing if his goal scoring ability can translate to the NHL.

Also, why the heck is Lee out and not Carkner? Lee was very good last night IMO. He played a solid physical game. I didnt even remember Carkner was playing until I saw his #39 in the 3rd.

Hoping for a win tonight...Nice to see Hoffman get a chance. Watch Sens from 7 to about 9:30 then turn on WJC -- Canada & Sweden pre-tournament game.

As for last night's game... nice that they did not quit. With the Foligno penalty... that was NOT a 5 min and a game. Gaustad got no penalty, and no fine or suspension for concussing Winchester with a cheap shot... and Foligno gets it for the same type of hit that the Detroit player did on Kessler the other night-- he got no penalty either.

I'm really beginning to question the integrity of the NHL and it's referees and Shanahan. I'm beginning to wonder if someone is 'lining their pockets' -- a la that basketball ref.

As for Condra nice save....

Sports betting can cause games to be called wrongly or throw to change an outcome for profit and greed.

Its the reason why betting insports was banned for so long and itkept the game honest. Greed took over and it makes you think when questionable calls changea game. I see more penaties called in the last 5 minutes more than ever before and it always to the team down a goal. Vegasis controlling games as much as they can, atleast thats how it looks imo. It just makes you wonder doesn't it.

That penalty against Foligno last night almost made me turn off the game. It's pathetic how far refs have gone to target him by not only over-penalizing his legal hits, but also not penalizing hits against him. It's a joke, and it's time the NHL starts publicly discussing bad calls/refs the way they do everything else in the game. I'm tired of these refs controlling games, especially when it's obvious they are not being consistent team to team, game to game or even within a game.

This influx of young refs the last few years has destroyed the quality of the game, and the only party to blame is the NHL itself. It shouldn't be this hard to hold your refs more accountable!

Hey guys im just wondering what tookie thinks of the turris trade now. When talking about who won the heatly trade, I remember him saying something along the lines of "Yes, what does it matter what Heatley does from when he got traded to when he dies, he's not playing for us, its what he DID do for us that matters, nothing else.

Michalek can only be compared to what Heatley DID as a Senator, not as a Shark or a Wild. Heatley' time here was spectacular, people were singing his praises all over town, we were gonna win a Cup with this guy, then a slew of idiotic coaches followed, capped by Clouston...So he pulled a Turris and bailed.

Milan was doing well, he could have reached 45-50 but now its out of reach and now he's concussed...

Now since joining team turris is a point per game with assists on back to back game winners. I guess we are going to hear a brand new approach to judging trades this afternoon.

Not even close to a good sample size but it is a decent start, and nothing more. Let's see how he does after 82 games and discuss who won that trade then, not now...

I said this yesterday as well, the refs have 0 accountability to the league, teams, or themselves right now. They make a horrible game changing call and nothing happens to them, there's no discipline, no apology, nothing.

Teams spend millions upon millions of dollars and the fans spend even more, it's about time we stopped letting these Zebra striped clowns run the show...

My suggestion yesterday was to have an off-ice official, so if there's even any doubt at all about a call, they go to the off-ice ref to review. The ref will have a war room style set-up to review the plays. Isn't that what they do in the NFL now?

1st, they should go back to 1 ref and get rid of the 2 ref system. That's just an extra body with a God complex yearning to blow his whistle and dictate the game. It doesn't work.

2nd, refs should learn to rely on their linesmen, especially when they were better positioned to see a play. Some do but most don't and that's just old school, egocentric, chain of command bullshit. I think that the autocratic style of management rarely works in any work environment.

3rd, stop hiring former players to hold important, critical-thinki ng type jobs in the league. This type inbreeding doesn't work. Having been a captain or assistant captain of a team does not qualify you to be in management...

I've always been in favour of finishing as low as possible when not contending. However as the team gathers talent it will move up the ranks. As nice as Forsberg, Yakupov, or Grigs might be to have the fact is the team might be too good to get a shot at any of them. I believe collecting top players from the draft is essential. The Sens have done extremely well to draft better than their ranking and this puts the rebuild on a faster pace.

Fans of the Rebuild should identify where some of our players would be ranked if their draft class was re-done in 2011.

2008 - Karlsson 15th Overall - 3rd/4th Overall
2009 - Cowen 9th Overall - 4th/5th Overall
2010 - *Turris 3rd Overall - 11th Overall vs. 2007 Class
2011 - TBD

We're icing two top five picks in Karlsson and Cowen if those drafts were re-done. The value of that can't be understated. It remains to be seen how Turris, Zibanejad, Noesen, Puempel, and Silfverberg develop.

I'd like to see more of this type of thing. Similar to MLB perhaps. After a whistle if there's something in question (a call made by a ref or a linesman signalling to a ref that he might have missed one) just huddle up. NFL refs do it to. Nothing wrong with doing that and then making the right call or "there was no infraction on the play" even.

Egos man - too many big egos among refs.

As per Travis Yost... on the hit the ref nearest the play was not even going to call a penalty. The penalty was called on Foligno after they had a huddle. Maybe the linesmen had a better view or whatever.

So if linesman can call or recommend major penalties -- why was nothing given to Gaustad for the Winchester hit... and I'm still scratching my head for the reason he was not suspended or even fined?

How are the players going to know what gets a suspension and what doesn't?

0 #29 hq 2011-12-23 15:42
@Sandy:
not only that Gaustad was allowed to stay in the game for a very obvious deliberate hit to injure. Foligno's still falls in the gray area.

I feel there is an increase in game misconducts, fines and hearings, but not the required increase in supplementary discipline that will actually curb harmful hits. If Gaustad gets canned for his hit for lets say three games, guys on the sabres team like Gaustad, McCormick, Kaleta combined with buffalo's stinking record will think twice about making that kind of play.

hockey should be all about the contact sport we all like, but it should not become a sport where teams have to resort to injuring the opponent to win. I think that alot of players these days are doing the latter, whether intentionally or unintentionally .

Murray went to see the officials after the game and got zilch !!

This team has truly performed against all odds this season. I remember in the off season all the "experts" bashing the team as to how poorly they would play this season and how few goals they would score. I love how this team has responded.

Bryan Murray has done a good job, but not enough can be said about Paul Maclean though. He has literally turned this thing around. What a guy. I hope he's our coach for a long time.

With Karlsson I wonder how much his salary is gonna be? U can't give him Lidstrom/Chara/ Weber money. He's no where near there level defensively. The only comparable player really is Mike Green. Unbelievable offensive Dman with defensive zone issues. He makes around 5.2 million a year if I'm not mistaken. It would be difficult to justify giving Karlsson any more than 5.7 or so imo. Maybe giving him a really long term deal will be the only way we get him under six mill.

I've posted this several times now but I really do feel this is the best comparable for Karlsson in terms of contracts. Reason why?

Letang current salary is based off low point production not current production. Green scored 30 goals one year insane amount. Doughty has a Norris Nomination. Keith has a Norris Trophy.

Keith Yandle is the perfect comparison. I know many don't watch him play but he is a treat to watch. Very smoote Dman

Yandle:
Year 1: 43gp: 5g 7a 12pts (entry level contract)
Year 2: 69gp: 4g 26a 30pts (entry level contract)
Year 3: 82gp: 12g 29a 41pts (2nd deal)
Year 4: 82gp: 11g 48a 59pts (2nd deal)
Salary:5 year $26,250,000 Cap hit: $5,250,000 (signed July 2011)

Karlsson:
Year 1: 60gp: 5g 21a 26pts (Yandle year 2)
Year 2: 75gp: 13g 32a 45pts (Yandle year 3)
Year 3: 35gp: 4g 29a 33pts (Yandle year 4)
Salary:????

Would love to get the same 5 year deal as Yandle got

Would love to get the same 5 year deal as Yandle got

If Murray can pull it off, all the best to us but I think it may end up being slightly higher. His agent would argue that by comparison, Karlsson's point totals are higher for every year, if only slightly. And at this point in the year, he would have to be considered for a Norris nomination which is added value to his case (and pretty incredible in such a young career).

What I would like to see is a gradual contract.

Year 1 at 4.5
Year 2 at 5.0
Year 3 at 5.5
Year 4 at 5.5
Year 5 at 6.5 for a total of 27mil with a cap hit of 5.5ish.

The terms of his extension will be highly dependant on how quickly Murray can get this deal done. The longer the wait, the more he will cost IMO.

Bad penalty for Smith to take. I don't mind Condra's penalty because he may have prevented a goal. At least the refs got these two calls right.

Now since joining team turris is a point per game with assists on back to back game winners. I guess we are going to hear a brand new approach to judging trades this afternoon.

LOL! With a comment like that, Tookie will eat you for lunch. Turris is a PPG player with the Sens....lol...He's played 2, count'em, 2 GAMES! Not even close to a good sample size but it is a decent start, and nothing more. Let's see how he does after 82 games and discuss who won that trade then, not now...

3 games :-)

Dean has now referred to Hoffman as Karlsson on three different occasions during this game. If I can get it right then why can't he? Just brutal. These two are so boring to listen to. I respect what Denis did as a player even though I'm too young to have ever seen him play, but he is one horrible color commentator.

I think the refs around the league have challenged each other to see who can do the worst job. I hate to be yet another guy who complains, but Cowen gets a penalty for text book defence, but the Sens player has to pull with two hands to get his stick out from under Gleason's arm and there is no call. Sens haven't had a powerplay yet. Jesus.

Anyone else notice how Turris has a bit of trouble positioning himself on offensive rushes? He's always going behind or on the outside of a defending player rather than cutting in and giving the passer a good option.

I hope he's not on of those that are scarred of going in the high traffic areas...

to witness Alfredsson's goal # 400 live !!

EDIT** 2 shots now!!!!! holy smokes

one of these days he might even get a point

Now lets all pretend that he is an excellent player, and thumbs down!

I don't think I've seen an NHL game played on worse ice in the last 10 years, including the outdoor games. The NHL should be embarassed. Neither team can get any flow.

This is the first time, that SensChirp did not post any
Projected Lineup on a Game Day thread.

Actually, it was the exact same lineup as the Panthers game, in which Line 4 was : Lee- Konopka- Butler, then
became in Carolina game : Hoffman - Konopka - Butler.

No doubt this could have been a blowout , were it not for numerous heroic saves by Craig Anderson.

Merry Christmas to the Ottawa Senators, all the fans,
and SensChirp owner for his excellent website, and finally all the posters on SensChirp !!
