  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

Practice Notes and The Energizer Night Skate

After an impressive win over the Sabres last night, the Ottawa Senators will now play two more games before a couple days off for the Christmas break.

First up is a home date with the Florida Panthers tomorrow night. The Sens are then in action the following night when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes. A great chance for the Sens to head into the holiday break on a high.

The team was on the ice for practice today and lined up the same way as they did against the Sabres with one small change.

Jesse Winchester is the latest player to join the long list of guys that have suffered a concussion this season. He was run from behind by Paul Gaustad last night on a play Sens head coach Paul MacLean called dangerous. Still no sign of supplementary discipline related to the incident.

With Winchester sidelined, the Sens will have to shuffle the line up a little bit tomorrow night. The injury to Winchester means that Bobby Butler will likely draw back into the line up.

Milan Michalek practiced with the team and is closing in on a return. Michalek was wearing a no-contact sweater at practice but it’s clear he’s getting close. It sounds like the Sens leading goal scorer has been all but ruled out for tomorrow night but there is a chance he plays on Friday.

MacLean made it clear that the decision rests with Michalek at this point. Craig Anderson will start in goal tomorrow.

The team announced today that there are less than 6,500 tickets remaining for the team's next seven home games.  With Christmas just around the corner, I can't think of a better gift for Sens fans of all ages.

Hope Shanahan (splg?) pulls his head out of his ass and delivers a 1-3 game suspension.

Hopefully the weather can cooperate and freeze the canal in time for the skate.

Glad to hear Michalek is close to a return.

Lastly... this has been talked about before, but this is Butler's chance to claim a spot. With Winchester out for an undetermined time... Butler HAS to start producing.

Can't wait for tomorrow's game... Turris' first goal!!

GO SENS GO!

Side note to the Energizer Skate.

Not only is it cheap to register and not only are funds going to a great cause... but should you raise money through pledges, you can get some pretty amazing gifts!!

See you all on the canal!

Sens 23rd in Power Rankings according to TSN. Montreal is 21st, Toronto is 14th.

I wish TSN was a person, so I could kick it in the shins, or play Roshambo with (see http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=roshambo)

F*CK you TSN. I hope Sportsnet sleeps with your wife.

I hope whenever it is Michalek comes back, they are certain he is 99% healthy. With all these guys getting their eggs scrambled the last thing we need to do is bring him back too soon.

Chirp you are right, tickets make the ultimate Christmas gift. We already did our mini-Ottawa Christmas before heading out of town for the holidays and were lucky enough to have a couple pairs stuffed into the Christmas stockings.

Frigging disappointing, not sure what the hell a player needs to do against the Sens to get suspended. I would feel better even knowing that idiot Shanny at least *called* Gaustad to discuss the hit...

TSN power rankings are all done by math - so it's hard to blame them.

Still, they're heavily skewed by goal differential, and give extra credit for 'blow out wins'. The couple games in which the Sens got blown out don't help them - despite having a better record than some teams, we've been scored on more than anyone and have won some close ones.

Also, injuries are a big factor and the fact that our top goal scorer is out skews things further.

Normally things like goal differential and ability to win big are pretty good indicators of where a team is at, but I'm not so sure those stats accurately describe this year's version of the Senators.

I think michalek should kick back, get better, and enjoy the holiday break. With two game remaining its not worth the risk if a little extra rest helps.

How in the hell can Montreal be put higher in the Power Rankings when they are behind the Sens in the standings? That makes no sense.

Sens get no love from Toronto-centric media.

It's really pissing me off that I can't find the stats for the pre-tournament Sweden vs. Denmark game. They posted the stats for USA vs. Russia but nothing for this game. I want to see how many points Zibanejad put up and if he was a factor in the game. Anyone find those anywhere? I'm sure there's some Swedish article written about it that can be found via google.

i posted it in the blog before this. zibanejad got an assist . apparently the game announcer was being like pierre mcguire is to crosby or dion phaneuf. called zibanejad a beast out there. sweden won the game 8-0 but zibanejad played the wing this game but apparently had some shifts at center too. Claesson had a goal. best player of the game was filip forsberg

1-0 Forsberg. Assist Collberg.
2-0 Friberg. Assist Karlsson.
3-0 Karlsson. Assists Friberg and Backman.
4-0 Claesson. Assist Rensfeldt.
5-0 Aberg. Assists Zibanejad and Backman.
6-0 Nordstrom. Assists Forsberg and Collberg.
7-0 Nordstrom. Assists Sundstrom and Rensfeldt.
8-0 Sundstrom. Assists Rask and Backman

"no supplementary discipline related to the incident"...

Of course not, everyone in the league knows that you can hurt Senators with indemnity. Shanahan is a joke. To date, all that has happened is one measly $2500 fine. Hurting Sens is allowed in the NHL.

On another note:
One day after singer Michael Buble skated with the Vancouver Canucks, Justin Bieber took the ice with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old Canadian pop star skated with Dion Phaneuf, Jake Gardiner, Tyler Bozak and goaltender Jonas Gustavsson at Air Canada Centre before taping his Christmas special at Massey Hall.

Unlike Buble, who wore full equipment while skating with the Canucks at Rogers Arena, Bieber wore a knit hat and Leafs warmups as he skated and took shots on Gustavsson -- on one, he was snuffed out on a backhander after a deke.

Canucks can have the Boob and Leafs can have the Bieb.
Sens will go with Five Man Electrical Band, Alanis, Tom Green, Dan Akroyd, Hilotrons or My dad vs. Yours. Any other suggestions ?

I don't really buy that, our Goal Diff. is at -11, which puts us in at 23rd. That's not great but it's not dead last either. We've also only been "blown out" 2-3 games this year out of 33.

TSN never gets the Sens their due diligence so I don't really care but we should be ranked higher than 23rd, especially with the way our stars have been playing. We rank 29th in GA mostly cause we had a rough go at the start of the season. Keep in mind we are 7th now for GF....It's starting to balance out...

TSN bugged me at first, now I just love watching them say stupid shit like: Sens will finish last, Their offence is going to suck this year, they rank lower than montreal, etc, etc...

Why do I love it? 'cause I like watching them looking like idiots night after night, and I always liked cheering for underdogs ;)

Come on Bobby!!! get your show on the road!!!

Only power ranking that counts:

Toronto - 7th in the East, 16th overall (and falling)
Ottawa - 8th in the East, 17th overall
Montreal - 12th in the East, 24th overall

You know what's great about Giroux, he wasn't a first or second overall pick, he was drafted 22nd overall ;) I guess it was only because of his size though. Same goes for Eberle. If those two drafts were done all over again both those guys would go in the top five. What steals they were for Philly and Edmonton.

Its becoming a trend now, I think the Czechs are also doing that, avoiding players that are not signed/playing in their own Czech league.
