This situation has been bizarre from the get go. When the Sens made the decision to loan Filatov to the KHL, it was safe to assume they believed signing a contract would not be such a long and drawn out issue.
Yesterday, Filatov's agent told the CSKA team to either sign Filatov to a contract or trade his rights to another team. If they didn't, Filatov apparently planned to return to Ottawa. Apparently some issues with the CSKA team and a new sponsor led to the hold up.
Now that Filatov is signed to a deal, he will finish the season in the KHL and could potentially return to Ottawa next season. Filatov will play his first game in the KHL on Thursday.
Game day post coming in a little bit.
Nice.
If stone can do good in this tournament this will make it clear to me thaqt he is one of the best prospects not in the NHL
Stone-Turris could be a good combo in years to come...
More importantly right now Stone potted his own rebound last night in WJC against Finland, also the GWG.
Sunday people were cautiously optimistic.
Yesterday most people loved it and were looking forward to seeing him play.
Now he apparently could forge a great combination with another player who has yet to play a game in the NHL and was one of the earlier cuts in the training camp of a rebuilding hockey club.
I'm all for optimism, but this is the same sort of crap where we had people yelling at those of us urging caution over Filatov that we were the scum of the earth (leaf fans) and shouldn't be posting on this site and that Filatov was going to score 30 goals in the NHL this year.
All the screaming at people for thinking that Turris is a bust before he has even played a game is spot on, but claiming that he's going to be a force in years to come is just as moronic based on exactly the same amount of evidence - nothing.
Quality post. Has been fascinating to watch the opinions on the deal change.
I was thinking the same thing(s), but likely wouldn't have expressed it as well.
Milan Michalek on the ice this morning...skati ng by himself.
Great to hear Michalek is back on the ice even if it is by himself. Has clearly been making progress the past few days.
When the deal was announced I was surprised that we were prepared to move Rundblad so quickly, but listening to the logic behind it and MacLean's view of Turris it made a lot more sense.
I like the ballsy nature of the deal. People can rag on Burke all they want but at least he isn't frightened to make a deal that shakes things up and makes peole go wow. Finally Murray has done something similar.
This could give us something we haven't had in a long time, a genuine 2nd line centre and outstanding depth down the middle of the ice.
Of course there is a chance Rundblad becomes a star and Turris doesn't, but even if that's the case I still like the fact that Murray was prepared to make the deal in the first place.
We are rebuilding and potential is all we can ask for. This deal increases that.
I can understand both sides of the argument - whether or not we gave up too much. The only thing that threw me were those people saying it went against the whole "rebuild"? Turris is now the youngest forward on the team. How does that not fit into a rebuild?
I think a lot of the change in opinion might have something to do with people listening to the reports in the media lately and maybe when Pierre McGuire on the Team. If Pierre was still with TSN, I'm sure all we'd be hearing tomorrow was how much Pierre has a boner for Turris.
I agree completely. If we had dealt Rundblad and a pick for a middle of the range or 30ish something centre like Jason Arnott or Tim Connolly people would be legitimately pissed to the moon and back but we didn't. We traded an unproven dman for an unproven centre.
Maybe throwing in the pick was over payment, but sometimes you got to pay the ferryman to get what you want.
I like the nature of the deal and what it says about Murray, MacLean and the continued strides to improve the team. I'm also excited to see Turris play.
There isn't one realistic deal out there that truly ends a rebuild. This is imply part of it. Moving assets to get assets.
Atlhough I admit I have not seen much of him, his numbers and his holdout, were not endearing qualities to me.
If it turns out we had too much on our backend, should we not have made sure there were not better offers out there for Rundblad?
I know the Oilers need D, and have an abundance of young forwards. ie Paajarvi went down to the AHL, and no not I am not questioning who is better, but they also have Hemsky, Gagner etc.
Not knowing much of Turris, I just can't help but wonder did we shop Rundblad around enough to see what else he could get us.
It was clear the Rundblad could not play in the NHL with the Sens this year, but I have not doubt that one day we will regret letting him go, lets just hope that Turris makes us forget that.
I think alot of people expect too much, too fast. If a player gets drafted in the top 6 doesn't mean he's ready right away. They're not all crosby's and stamkos's and much like what happened to MA Fleury, sometimes they take more time. Turris / Filly both ooze talent like it's not even funny. It remains to be seen if Turris can play like a top 6 this year but filatov's game clearly needed work. Maybe some day they'll reach their potential, maybe they won't. But expecting it RIGHT NOW or calling them Busts while they're still 21/22 (respectively) is just ridiculous.
-Pierre McGuire
Couldn't have said it better myself. Stone is a beast, I really hope he can join the Sens next year.
Of course there is a chance Rundblad becomes a star and Turris doesn't
There is also a chance that Turris becomes a star and Rundblad doesn't.
@ Miguel,
Murray has been working the deal for Turris since Sept.
He was not shopping Rundblad, but Maloney showed a lot of interest in Rundblad. So, this was a deal that Murray jumped at, and he took it, even though he was forced to add a 2nd round pick !
**monster
Damn forgot that one...
I was at the Boston game where it was clear PM had lost his patience.
He had both Karlsson and Rundblad together, and they were one for 3 goals vs Bruins, and he was lambasting them both on the bench, and had actually benched them for quite some time.
At that point, even I was yelling to keep "ABBA" on the bench. And when he would put them out again I would chant
"Mama Mia here we go again, Mama..."
So I knew Rundblad's days up in the NHL for this year were numbered, but I truly believed he would go down to the AHL.
However I had heard that if they tried to put him down he would go back to the SEL, and this is what had sealed his fate.
Really looking forward to getting my first real look at Turris in the NHL, and will try to keep my expectations in check.
Im sure he'll talk about how stacked we are and how he loved Rundblad but it doesn't matter that we got rid of him..
Better listen and see what the Guru of Prospects has to say
My point exactly. Of course if Rundlad flops everyone will praise Murray for this deal, conveniently forgetting that we had to get him to give him away in the first place.
At least we can stop comparing Tarasenko to Rundblad now. Bring on the pointless Tarasenko/Turri s debate!!
edit - i see some of us are already there (post #27). Jesus
