The Ottawa Senators offence woke up in a big way and it was Jason Spezza that paced the Sens attack. Spezza racked up two goals and two assists in what was his most impressive game this year. You could tell that Spezza just had an extra gear and was really clicking with linemates Colin Greening (1 goal) and Daniel Alfredsson (1 G, 2A)
The four point night gives Spezza 36 points on the year, just three back of the league lead.
It was an equally impressive outing for Jared Cowen. The rookie defenceman picked up a career high four points and finished +4 on the night. Interesting to note that he is the first defenceman in Sens history to accomplish that feat.
In a year where Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is obviously going to dominate the rookie of the year talk, Jared Cowen has to get some consideration. He has played some huge minutes with injuries to Kuba and Gonchar and looks extremely comfortable. Crazy to think just how good this guy is going to be.
Erik Karlsson picked up another three assists and is back in a tie for the league lead with 27 on the year.
It is important to note that with last night's win, the Ottawa Senators moved to 2-0-0 when I don't attend the game. I get the message loud and clear fellas!
The Sens will be on the practice ice at the SensPlex at noon today. Should have a better idea on the status of some of the team's walking wounded at that point.
- As you hopefully read here first, the Ottawa Senators are finally getting that much needed new scoreboard. It sounds like the thing is going to be extremely impressive. "With more than 2,170 feet of viewing space, the LED screens offer a 441 per cent increase in size — they're 16 x 21 feet — over the current scoreboard, which includes 7.5 x 10-feet standard definition screens. In addition, there are ring-shaped LED viewing surfaces on the top and bottom of the scoreboard. The structure carries a pricetag of nearly $5 million, and is the largest possible board that could be installed into the roof structure at Scotiabank Place." Can't wait to see this thing in action!
Alfie may be coming back for another year after all if they keep him on Spezza's wing, these guys love playing together and I think Spezza's jump last night had a lot to do with their reunion.
Any word on Foligno? did'nt look good when he left the ice...
Was at the game and man is Cowan ever amazing. What cant this kid do?
Karlsson also had a very good defensive game to go along with his usual amazing offense.
That 2nd period/watching spezza, alfie, karlsson, Cowan, a lesser extent Carkner(who REALLY stepped it up last night) have such great nights.
The shocking part of this firing is that Gauthier and are very close since their days here in Ottawa. I feel sorry Martin but I wouldn't want to coach in that crazy city where they will do an investigation on you if fart on of their players.
Bad move Montreal...stup id Habs!
Oh well, I will love to watch Montreal and their fans crashing and burning the remainder of the season...
GO SENS GO!!!!
Our defence in 2 years is going to be scary to play against; I just hope we are able to sign and keep them all around.
Karlsson - Cowen
Philips - Rundblad
xxxxx - xxxxx
(even tho its going to take this year and next for Rundblad to get size and better defensive awareness)
You're right...Burke's "We're taking him" quote may have been a bit of a slap to our organization, but who's laughing now?
And don't discount the fact the Scum tried to rush Kadri to the NHL whereas we gave Cowen time to develop...Don't rush those draft picks, folks!
Maybe...But there are those who say Cowen is actually now ahead of Chara than when he was 21...
Kadri has very similar carear experiences with Cowen ... the only difference has been that Cowen is a better NHL player and was able to play for Bingo during the great playoff run last spring (and the second WJC..)
It seems to me like everyone from the media is just ignoring that it happened, even though this time he didn't come back to the game and Depres only got 2 minutes, which is bizarre.
Pretty stupid that a nobody player who's only been playing since Dec. 1st can come in and take out one of our guys who's having a career year.
I hope Shanahan looks into this, but we all know that he won't.
John Shannon of SNET Hockey Central said that Foligno was okay and expected to play against Buffalo on Tuesday.
Post-game it was said that barring any overnight complications Foligno was fine.
Cowen is our future Norris Candidate
Karlsson is the flash and a hi lite ree, but Cowen is the real deal and will be our best D.
PM please keep Alfie and Spezza together, it is uncanny how they know where each other are.
Please tell me Foligno is fine, he is playing with a ton of confidence, and his best hockey
and a big welcome to a former first rounder who is finally coming into his own, in Lee, his game is unheralded and for his size his agility is amazing, and should now be kept in our top 4 as a shut down D
Phillips is a great character guy, but he should now take a back seat to our future which looks so bright
What a great game to be at, I have not felt that good about our Sens in a couple of years
Go Sens Go
Just wondering, if Jacques Martin, when he was Senators ' Head Coach a few years ago, was fired by Gm Pierre Gauthier?
Would Martin be the first coach to be fired twice by the same GM ??
John Muckler fired Martin here in Ottawa...then replaced him with one Brian Murray
hey snoopy its sensarmy123 from the sens forum
martin was fired by muckler
You are so correct !!
I must be slowly developing dementia ??
Thanks also buddy!
Do not ssee you too often on SensTalk ??
Lets be real,
No Staal, No Crosby, No Fluery when it counted
Pens were also without 2 Dmen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek
we took 5 consecutive penalties and let in 4 goals
still the same old on that front
Even Columbus would have had an "imressive win" against that partial penguins team.
Thanks guys, guess I should pay closer attention.
No Michalek, Anderson, Gonchar or Kuba. I can play that game too.
Spezza had a great game last night as did Alfredson, Cowen & Karlsson. I also though Lee played a smart hame last night & Auld at least kept us in it & didn't let it get away from him. Don't you wish they could play like that every night.
And we were without the leagues leading goal scorer, a HOF defenseman, playing our backup goalie, with fewer veterans. What's your point?
I thought their coaches had to be french speaking?
Thanks, I was wondering when someone would mention Lee. He had his best game of the season. And Phillips was looking pretty good too.
Cowen was alright.
The only thing keeping them competitive most nights is Carey Price... without him.. they would be nowhere.
"...and to all a good night!" (referring to Montreal's playoff chances)
Thanks conor smythe,
still not understanding why Lee is not getting more love,
and do agree that Philips was better yesterday, but lets be honest he needs to take a step back, and should now be in a 5-6 role, b/c given the opportunity I truly believe Lee is the better player now,
Again a great win, especially without the NHL goal scoring leader in MM9!
Forget the Leafs... I hate the Canadiens the most. I hope they absolutely fail.
GRRREAT game last night. Cowen should be a write-in for the ASG ballot folks (in-lieu of Gonchar).
*last note - it's -10 out there! See you Sens fans on the local shinny rinks soon! WOOOOO!!!!
