  • Murray Speaks- Alfie, Draft, Budget and MacLean

Lost in the hype around yesterday’s announcement surrounding the new Canadian Tire Centre, or The Wheel House as Sens fans have dubbed it, was an interesting interview with Sens GM Bryan Murray.

In the article posted on the Senators website,  Murray discussed a variety of topics including the future of Daniel Alfredsson, plans for draft day, Paul MacLean’s future and how the new agreement with Canadian Tire may impact the team’s salary structure for next season.

Game Day Notes and Scoreboard Update

A little late on the draw today.  Have been away from my computer and was not able to update the site until now.

Thankfully, Paul MacLean set the stage for tonight's line up at practice yesterday so we know there won't be any changes.  David Rundblad stays in the mix on the back end and Craig Anderson makes the start in goal.

No changes expected to the forward combinations either.  Nikita Filatov will start on the team's top line with Greening and Spezza while Nick Foligno takes a second straight turn as the team's second line centre.  Here is how the Sens are expected to line up

Greening-Spezza-Filatov
Michalek-Foligno-Alfredsson
Daugavinsr-Smith-Condra
Konopka-Winchester- Butler

Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Gonchar
Cowen-Rundblad

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 8:30 on Sportsnet and TVA.  You can follow along on the radio at Team 1200 or keep an eye on the comment section for any streams that may pop up.

_________________________________________________________________________

On Bobby Ryan

Plenty of speculation today that Anaheim Ducks winger Bobby Ryan could be available via trade.  Spoke with one contact on the Sens potential interest and was quickly told it wouldn't happen.  Ducks will have plenty of offers for Ryan if they decide to move him but I really don't think Murray is willing to part with the assets required to make a deal of this magnitude.  Ryan's contract is also an issue for the Sens.

On Derrick Brassard

Still an option the Sens are considering as a second line centre.  According to Aaron Portzline on Twitter, Brassard will be in the line up for the Jackets tonight in Vancouver and is expected to see an increased role.  Should be interesting to see who has scouts in Vancouver tonight. Have been told the Sens will have scouts in attendance.

On All Star Voting

The latest round of All Star Game voting results are in and as expected, the Sens contingent are beginning to feel some heat from other players from around the league.  Daniel Alfredsson has slipped into second among forwards, Spezza is third and Michalek has fallen to 5th.  Erik Karlsson continues to lead all defenceman in votes.  Important that Sens fans continue to vote and vote often.  Tell your friends, tell your family, tell strangers on the street to #VoteAlfie and all the rest.  You can go here to cast your vote. And don't forget you can vote an additional 30 times via text message and 30 more times from your mobile device.

On Scoreboard

Here is the piece of good news for today.  Was given indication today that the plan is to have a new scoreboard in place in time for the NHL All Star Game on January 29th.  This has been an on again/off again issue for awhile now but it finally sounds like some progress has been made.  Rumour has it the board will be installed towards the end of December.

Brassard might be a good gamble to take for a couple reasons:
1)He has the talent to be a good player in this league
2)If he develops into a great player, he could potentially increase the fan base across the bridge; given he's a kid from Hull.

Not sure what the asking price is, but it would be fun to see Murray make a pitch

They will pretty much give him away at this point. They want the cap space as he's been a healthy scratch and it seems they've given up on him.

I have heard about brassard's potential, but I haven't seen him play. What kind of player is he? And hopefully the right attitude.

I wouldn't want Ottawa to give anything more than one of the following Winchester, condra, Carkner or lee plus nothing better than a 2nd.Could end up being worth it. I like Neil and konopka's character so I wouldn't want them gone. And I have been impressed with kaspars. .

its funny to hear people talk about how BM should jump on this guy. If he becomes a flop then its going to be a pure hate on BM for taking a chance on him ... I think that BM should take a chance on him I would stick by him for doing it cause i think that Brassard has tremendous amount of skill and needs a change

Id gladly give up a first round pick in 2013 and a 2nd round this year for Bobby Ryan. The kid is cash money. Just a scape goat for an under performing team.

They are all horrible right now. Even Lubo before he went down. Hiller is a sieve.

Bobby Ryan is a stud... just not playing like one, none of them are

"I really don't think Murray is willing to part with the assets required to make a deal of this magnitude"

its sadly true. if I'm Anaheim trading Ryan to Ottawa, I would want one of Spezza, Karlsson, Michalek, Rundblad, or Cowen in return.

Unfortunately, those guys won't get traded anytime soon....

Fortunately, those guys won't get traded anytime soon.

Tough to make trades when the only guys who have any "value" are the one's we're building a team around.

Ottawa will soon be a team able to negotiate big time, as we are suddenly prospect rich now. But, yeah, I agree we are not disrupting the current chemistry building happening right now, or giving up on our future. If one of are extra d-men is not enough to make a trade happen, I don't believe one will, unless picks are swapped.

It's like going to the store, and end up craving candy. If you need (or crave) candy, do you go buy the 5 KG of candy at Costco, because it's a good deal? (and later regret it, cause it's too much). Or, do you try and find a smaller deal (say bulk barn), with less quantity and fulfills your craving and you feel better, cause you didn't spend as much overall, and you don't have a year's supply?

just say'in. :)

I think Murray is looking for a bargain for a 2LC, and not someone of Ryan's ilk, or cap space.

Brassard - I think we enough projects but will trust Murray's judgement if he feels Brassard is worth a shot.

Ryan - Why would we trade a huge chunk of depth for one guy? I thought we learned in 2007 that having one line and a bunch of bottom sixers doesn't win a cup?

It's too early to get a guy like Ryan. Wait until he's a UFA (and by then there may be other options too).

He's made such great strides defensively, and if he continues to work on that aspect of his game, we might have ourselves a Norris trophy candidate for years to come.

The scary thing about Karlsson is that he's only 21. Imagine when he's in his prime how great he's going to be. Just wait until he has a more talented group of players to move the puck to as well. That's not a knock against the guys we have now, but the forward group is only going to get better.

I've always said that Karlsson is better in his own end than people give him credit for. He's never going to be a shut down guy, but his positioning is solid and getting better and damn if he doesn't pick at least one pocket per game where the forward ends up looking around going "WTF?" as Karlsson is streaking the other way with the puck.

Norris - I don't know about that since that typically goes to the shot-blocking ogre type but he won't be a liability that's for sure.

Skill is skill man.

Agreed on Lidstrom but name another player like him - there aren't any. Certainly Karlsson is no Lidstrom.

Though I would argue that Karlsson is better in his own end than most D. He's just not "defense first" but when he needs to be he can. To clarify by "most" I mean I'd rather have Karlsson out there protecting a lead than "most" (i.e. 75%) other D in the NHL.

You'll disagree since that's what you do, so I'll just leave it at that.

Kuba can be injured as long as he wants. I'm not down on the guy but he's gone after this year (hopefully before the deadline) and I'd rather see Lee and Rundblad both get ice time.

The broken nose could be the best thing to happen to Filatov. What better way to shake the "prissy Russian" image than to strap on a cage and play with a reset nose?
