  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

Game Day- Sens Continue Western Swing

The Senators have now won two straight road games over the Leafs and Flames and will look to continue their winning ways against the surprising Edmonton Oilers.

Ottawa is coming off a text book road win in Calgary on Tuesday night.  Daniel Alfredsson opened the scoring and Bobby Butler scored the other two as the Sens topped the Flames by a 3-1 score.

Ottawa will be looking for more of the same against high-flying Oilers.

While Edmonton has cooled off as of late, they have to be considered the leagues most surprising team in the first quarter of the season.  They come in with a 9-6-2 record but have dropped their last three contests.

The Oilers have been getting phenomenal goaltending from Nikolai Khabibulin and have allowed just 2.12 goals against per game.  Up front, the Oilers have been buoyed by a blistering start from a rejuvenated Ryan Smyth.  He’s posted an impressive ten goals and 17 points through 17 games.

Expect him to be parked in front of Craig Anderson all night long.

Ottawa won't make any changes to the line up that won in Calgary on Tuesday although I wouldn't be surprised to see Bobby Butler creep his way up the depth chart if the Sens struggle offensively.   David Rundblad is a healthy scratch.

Here is how the Sens lined up at the morning skate...

Greening-Spezza-Michalek
Foligno-DaCosta-Alfredsson
Daugavins-Smith-Condra
Konopka-Winchester-Butler

Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Gonchar
Cowen-Lee

Another late start tonight as puck drop is scheduled for just after 9:30 PM.  The game is available on SportsnetSens and TVA or on the radio at Team1200.  Keep an eye on the comment section for a stream closer to game time.

____________________________________________________________

Because we have a late start today and I fear we may have said all there is to say on Filatov, let me see if I can steer the game day discussion a little bit.  In addition to the usual game day chatter, I thought we could do a little bit of Twentieth Anniversary Reflection.

Take your best shot at one or all of the questions below!

In the 20 year history of the Ottawa Senators...

  • Most underrated Senator of all-time?
  • Most overrated?
  • Most heart?
  • Toughest?
  • Most entertaining?
  • All-time favourite Senator?
  • Most painful Sens memory?
  • Best Senators memory?

Hey Chirp,

Glad you suggested other items for discussons, as we have surely exhausted talk on Filatov.

Most overated would be Alexandre Daigle who was promoted too much by the Sens Organiztion.

He started with huge expectations, and we all know what happened. Sens must share some of the blame, on his failure to shine with the team !

Hopefully Murray won't cave into pressure like he did for Heatley being shipped out of town. I'd laugh if at the end of the month, Filatov gets inserted into the lineup. But seriously, what did you guys expect him to do on the 4th line? Net a hat trick or have a 3 point night? Lol.

Free Filatov.

Just a thought...

Erik Karlsson is on pace for a record season by a Senator defenseman. The record is 63 pts by McIver in 92. Right now Special K is on pace for 73 pts so far. I know its still early, but who else thinks he will break the record this season?? I know I do!

Also, here is an interesting article about the numbers for the sens this year:

The '03 Game 7 loss to New Jersey is something that still haunts me. I actually feel like that was as close as we ever came to winning it all. Sure we won 2 more games in '07, but if we had gotten past NJ in '03, only the Cinderella Ducks stood in our way and those Cinderella teams never seem to win it all.

Expecting a shootout tonight, something around 5-4 for Ottawa. Will be fun to see the kids on both sides matchup, in another 3-5 years this could be the SC finals.

Butler should continue to get chances and break out, and Spezza to return to the scoresheet.

Not many people talking about it, but Foligno has been on a nice stretch with 5 goals and 8 points in the last 10 games. This might finally be his 40+point season.

Most underrated Senator of all-time? Chara. I know he's not underrated now but in hindsight he was more valuable than we gave him credit for
Most overrated? easy answer would be Daigle but Bondra and Kovalev are close. Or how about Josh Henessey, one of the cornerstones of the Havlat trade?
Most heart? Alfie. No question about his dedication to this team or his compete level
Toughest? Chara. Just ask McCabe
Most entertaining? Havlat
All-time favourite Senator? Alfie
Most painful Sens memory? Getting swept by the leafs in the first round
Best Senators memory? Reaching the cup finals. Also when Alfie hit Tucker then scored the OT winner. One that makes you laugh: When Alfie faked throwing his broken stick into the stands to make fun of Sundin

Most underrated Senator of all-time? I'm a kelly fan. For what was expected of him, he was amazing. Sooo smart, great team-mate, backchecker, forechecker, board player, and RARELY turned the puck over. Great value for the money. I can also throw Havlat under this list.
Most overrated? Daigle
Most heart? Alfie
Toughest? Neil
Most entertaining? Havlat
All-time favourite Senator? Alfie
Most painful Sens memory? Lack of effort in SCF
Best Senators memory? Philips takes a 2 min minor penalty. On his way out of the box, he gets a break-away pass and scores a sick goal. I'll always remember this memory because my friends and I were ragging on how Philips during the night on how he NEVER scores goals.

With the situation in Bingo...why hasn't Rundblad been sent down for a short stint instead of sitting him? Is there an injury that is on the hush?

Bingo sure could use a dman like him right now.. He'll get lots of minutes...get a chance to develop his leadership skills and maybe bring some confidence to a struggling team...

Chirp,
please tell me there is something in the works for a trade.
Carkner I am sure is ready to return giving us 2 healthy d-men sitting, and an abundance of 3-4th line players, especially once Regin is back.
In addition BM asking Filatov to wait till the end of the month, and Carkner maybe doing a conditioning stint, would this be to buy a little time to make a trade?
Any word from the inside?

The '03 Game 7 loss to New Jersey is something that still haunts me. I actually feel like that was as close as we ever came to winning it all. Sure we won 2 more games in '07, but if we had gotten past NJ in '03, only the Cinderella Ducks stood in our way and those Cinderella teams never seem to win it all.

I know this is all a personal survey, and opinions but not sure I understand how Radek Bonk as being underrated, and I think we see this quite a few times, so many people feel taht way?
Was he not a top 5 pick that scored like 70 goals in the IHL?
I thought that he never really reached the potential that we thought he would get to.
But perhaps some feel that he was not fully appreciated
Again just asking?

Way off topic... But I wonder if Carkner were healthy and the Sabres being absolutely desperate for some balls (especially next week in their rematch against the Bruins)... What we could potentially get for ol' Carks. Maybe when they get piss-pumped physically again next week they'll come a'knockin as Carkner (while I love the guy and his attitude)is pretty much disposible for us at this point.

Damn, we have certainly gone 0/6 on this road trip. 1/6 if roof collapses on the opposing team's practice facility with them all in it. Man, I rule at predictions....

Hilarious way for Winchester to get his first in 42 games. Especially after missing the empty net in Calgary.

Don't mind the link boys. Just because there's no www. doesn't mean it's a virus. I'm watching it now w/o interruptions or freakin ads.

Man I was just looking over the boxscore. Michalek, Spezza and Karlsson - beasting as usual. Some good second efforts by Smith, Daugy and Greening. Smith is really molding into a great NHL player to say the least.

No complaints from Spezza. Quiet, but played a solid game. Won almost all of his faceoffs and added two assists. It was a good team win.

Go Sens Go, a win in Vancouver would prove a lot.

Recap: Mtl loss, Tor loss, Sens win!!!
That's what you call a wn, win, win scenario.
Bonus: Although Boston won, Sens' win pops them over Boston in the standings and knocks them out of top 8.
