Feature Story

  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

MacLean the Man?

TSN Insider Bob McKenzie is very rarely wrong, so when he speaks, people in the hockey world listen.  A tweet from earlier tonight has suggested that former Wings Assistant Paul MacLean will be the next head coach of the Ottawa Senators.

No formal announcement has been made as of yet but I suspect we could hear something as early as tomorrow.

MacLean and Murray have a history together and the word is MacLean was very impressive in his first interview.  MacLean has since been in for a second conversation so it's definitely looking like he could be the guy.

I don't have any confirmation on my side of things but the word of McKenzie is as reliable as it gets.

The Sens definitely had an interest in MacTavish as well but I could definitely get behind this hire, if this is in fact the direction Murray chooses to go. MacLean has been with the Wings organization for the last five years and has experience working with one of the best in Mike Babcock.  He may not have head coach experience at the NHL level but by all accounts. he's ready to make the jump.

Will try to confirm the McKenzie story and update the site whenever possible.

Head coach announcements from all teams will likely wait until after the final. The commish wants the final to be the focus of the league, and prefers all other news to wait. ('Peg was an exception.)

maybe the second interview was to ask Maclean to accept the Coaching position with KK as assistant Coach.

I think they would do a great team together.

What are your thoughts

I say keep him down in Bingo for another year, and if he goes far in the playoffs again than bring him up as a assistant.

Chirp, how many assistant coaches were fired with Clouston?

"Coaching Carousel: smart $ on Paul MacLean to OTT, Glen Gulutzan to DAL, Craig MacTavish or Mike Yeo to MIN. Not done deals yet, just IMO."

That was from his twitter, I hope he's right....

I think the second interview is basically a dead giveaway that he's probably got the job. It's not all that often that you get invited back for a second talk and don't get the job. That invitation is basically to confirm for sure that he's the guy you want to go with and work out some details. I could be wrong but that's the sense I get here.

I really like this... mostly cause of all the experience he got and learned from a well respected coach in Mike Babcock

Just seems to make sense. The announcement will be made today or tomorrow is my guess considering he'll be there when he is announced as the new head coach. So, if Murray brought him back for the second interview, it was probably to ask him who he had in mind as his assistants. That's my opinion, not worth nearly as much as McKenzie's lol

I like Maclean, I think he should be a good coach for our team with a fair bit of coaching experience (no NHL experience), but he has been a head coach in the past.

I thought it was interesting the mackenzie didn't have muller as a favourite for any job. I wonder what gives there.

This will make me very happy if it comes to pass. He's part of a winner now, so hopefully he can bring that to the snes. I don't think you could have gone wrong with Mclean, McTavish, or McMuller.

Yes, when it comes to Mac Kenzie there isn't a better and more reliable source of information in hockey. As for Muller perhaps the Habs made an offer of HC after Martin next contract that and he might have some loyalty and wants to stick with the Habs or doesn't want to move his family anywhere far from Montreal.

Anyone even close to bringing in the same structure and philosophy that Mike Babcock represents in my opinion is a good candidate.

I think Mike Babcock is one of the most elite coaches in the NHL, and to have someone in that has stood beside him for so many years can only help a young organization such as this.

Hopefully things work out for Paul MacLean as coach of the Ottawa Senators. KK mentioned he would accept being an assistant coach, if the right guy is hired. Really hope he considers MacLean. I think a MacLean+KK coaching combo would be terrific.

Really diggin' the 'stache, too.

Let's hope MacLean has the same system as Babcock. A puckmoving/puck possession team with an aggressive forecheck and backcheck. Although we're going to need at least one more high end forward before fully implementing an all out puck possession team. Spezza, Alfie (if 100 percent) and to a lesser extent Foligno are really the only players who can hold onto the puck with efficiency. I'm not sure what it'll take but if we can't win the Jeff Carter sweepstakes, Hemsky would be a great option. I know he's had injury issues but this guy is highly skilled, relatively young and could play on Spezza's left side. Barring injury he could easily rack up 70-80 points. Plus he's not much of a risk with only one year left on his contract.

Ville Leino is the answer.

Yes, Hemsky is a great player when he's not hurt, but he's ALWAYS hurt. It is inevitable that he'll be hurt again this year for an extended period. Not much use in taking a shot on a guy that is probably only good for 40-50 games.

Give me someone a little less injury prone. Part of being a consistent player is being healthy enough to play.

I know that it is still not announced but like everyone here I would be 100% in favor of Mclean as coach...I remember when it was announced he was not going back to the Wings...I thought to myself how awesome it would be if we could land him, because he was part of the Wings for so long...just thought it would be a great chance for the Sens....so glad that this is now looking like a reality....can' t wait for the draft/FA and the next season!
Go Sens Go!

Well if this ends up being true and Maclean is indeed our next head coach, Kaspars Daugavins definately will be in a run for his money for the best moustache in the organization for sure :)
All kidding aside, I hope Kurt Kleinendorst will still be in Binghamton to help develop our future talent. When I say I hope so, I mean I hope no other NHL team swoops in and gives him an NHL gig in the not so far future. Not trying to sound selfish but just being realistic as I am sure Kleinendorst will be looked at for an NHL job, maybe not this summer as it looks like the other teams vacant postions are also close to being filled, but certainly he could land somewhere else next year for certain as jobs become available.

Still plenty of coaching positions out there. Winnipeg has started interviewing, Dallas, New Jersey, Minnesota. interesting that Muller is not the front runner in any of the positions that Bobby Mac mentions. Maybe he is a shoe in for New Jersey. Anything going on with Clouston?
