Feature Story

  • Welcome to the Canadian Tire Centre

The Ottawa Senators have called a press conference for 10:00 AM this morning where it is expected they’ll announce a new partner and a name for the building once known as Scotiabank Place.

And while the reports have yet to be “confirmed”, some good detective work by a couple SensChirp readers leads us to believe the new sponsor is Canadian Tire and the building will be renamed The Canadian Tire Centre.  Plenty of reaction to the new name around these parts yesterday but the reality is it’s a good Canadian company now associated with the Ottawa Senators brand.

Off the Grid

Dear Bryan Murray, I will be on the golf course all day and then out at the cottage afterwards. If you could please resist the temptation to hire a coach today it would be greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to give the readers a heads up and let you know I will not be able to update the site until later tonight or Sunday at the earliest.

We are still working on adding the feature but as of right now I am not able to post from the Blackberry. Normally not a big deal but I just have this weird feeling Bryan Murray will know my guard is down and make the announcement today.

If that's the case, I strongly encourage you all to follow me on Twitter if you aren't already.  You can follow SensChirp here and I will do my best to update on there if I hear anything new.

I mentioned this last night in the comment section but apparently Kurt Kleinendorst has indicated that he would consider a spot as an assistant but it would have to be with the right head coach.  He has had offer to be an assistant as recently as this past season but prefers to be the head man.

Spoke with a contact yesterday who suggested the Sens are very much interested in having Kleinendorst as part of the staff. We'll see if they can find a scenario that works for both sides. If you haven't had a chance to check out the Kleinendorst interview I suggest checking it out here. Always insightful and a breath of fresh air when compared to the traditional hockey interview.

Anyway, like I said I'll do my best to keep things up to date on here today either through updates in the comment section or on Twitter.

Enjoy your Saturday folks!

Have fun! I enjoyed the KK interview. Great answers and you can see why he's considered a good communicator. My ideal coaching situation, as I've said for some time now, is PM as coach and KK as an assistant - with an arrangement like the one KK talked about in NY. As a Detroit asst for many years, I would think that PM would be open to it.

So you personally know how Craig Ramsay coaches? You've been in a dressing room with him?

Craig Ramsay was part of the reason for an improved Atlanta Thrashers team. They may not have made the playoffs, but they literally surprised everybody.

Ramsay's a good coach. Maybe not the Sens next coach, but no spring chicken by any means.

Atlanta nose-dived the 2nd half of the season (I believe one of the worst records for the 2nd half). I don't think it was Ramsay's fault, but there was definitely some lack of discipline on the team's part to fall apart like that.

From all the quotes I have read in the past, Craig Ramsay is considered to be one of, if not the best coach the Sens have ever had either as a head or assistant. He works well with young players and he may be the ideal candidate to take over.

I do not know why this is even being discussed. Murray already said that he is very close to signing his head coach. He did his last interview the other day, Kurt Kleinendorst, and now we wait on his decision. Ramsay did not have an interview, thus, will not be hired.

Judging by KK interview yesterday, it seems as though Murray asked if he wanted him to stay in Bingo or be a Assistant coach for the big club. I really think, and Hope, that Paul Maclean is the head coach next season and KK is one of his assistants.

Draft is coming soon! Getting excited. Hope we can land Landeskog.

The interview on Team 1200 -- question was that IF KK was NOT hired as HC.. would he interested in being an assistant coach.. that's when KK said it depended on who the HC was and the circumstances.. . I assume he meant the responsibilitie s given to the assistants by the HC.

Hockey buzzard is reporting that the Sens are interested in Bouwmeester ... take it for what it's worth. Could be a flip. 6.8M/season for the next 3 or 4 years. He's 27. Please don't crank on me for sharing ... it's Sens related so something we should at least be aware of.

I wouldn't be against Bouwmeester, but Flames would have to take back one of Gonchar/Kuba. Bouwmeester is much more of an East style defenseman IMO anyway. Think Ek is on crack though. For sure soon enough he'll have Spezza going to LA (his original mention was it was a three-way trade).

I agree, the deal would have to include either of those defenseman. I'm thinking Calgary would not eager to take on either of them though, unless they are looking for cap relief. That would be the only benefit for them.

KK is a head coach - not an assistant - if you look at the Press Connects article by Joy? Kurt is not interested in the assistant coach position for Ottawa - Dont be surprised if you
loose KK if Murray doesnt offer him the head coach position - it would be a mistake to hire Wilfred Brimley

For the Bouwmeester thing to make sense for both teams, Ottawa would have to give up Lee and Gonchar. That way CGY only need to sign 2 players with 4M left and OTT frees space for wither Rundblad or Cowen.

IMO, this would be VERY benificail for us if it did happen. As long as we don't get rid of any significant draft picks.

I read that as well. I'm surprised that he did not predict Spezza going the other way. Rumours concerning the Sens always include Spezza.

Why in hell would the Sens want another D... they have 6 already with 2 rookies ready to take some spots... sure add another one to the mix.. That's an unreal crazy contract... is he even worth it?

Adding Bouwmeester would be amazing, hes a horrible fit in the west and would pair well with really anyone minus Kuba or Gonchar, I could see Calgary's interest in Kuba since his contract expires far sooner than Bouwmeesters. But this move would def need to open up a slot for Rundblad by sending Lee or Carkner along.

J Bo Karlsson
Gonch Rundblad
Big Rig Cowen

Pretty Fackin solid,

Calgary is tight to the cap as well, so they couldn't take much in the way of salary

Wiercioch, 9MM and a 2nd for Jbo?

I think this is a move Cgy has to make, so we can kind of put Feaster in a corner.

Yessir Sandy, good point there, they'll want an NHL ready Defensemen so yes, I believe Kuba is part of that deal. But obviously the Flames aren't just going to give him away. Unless the 3-way comes into play. And like I said Flames can't take a lot of cash on.

To Calgary: Kuba, 2nd, one of Moller/Simmonds
To Ottawa: J Bo
To LA Kings: Michalek

no offence, but i know we ALL want to get rid of Kuba, and many of us want to get Gonchar out of here too. HOWEVER, getting rid of Kuba to get bouwmeester would be great, but to get rid of michalek imo is just stupid, we dont have enough top6 forwards, why in the world would we give up 1. and on LA part, last year they already said they wouldnt move simmonds, he is WAY too good to move over a crap trade like this. simmonds stats dont show that he is good but what he does other than scoring is what makes him so great.

Michalek is 1 or 2 knee injuries away from being done for good. If 9MM is on this team the coach is going to want to try the 9MM-Spezz tandem. If I personally see it again I'm going to go fucking postal.

CC thought he could just throw 9MM with Alfie and Spezz and the loss of "Has Been" Heatley wouldn't be as evident. Sure it worked in the first 30 games or so, that was it. But despite the fact that it was clearly not working anymore CC continued trying it, when he really should have been trying Alfie-Spezz-AK2 7, Alfie on the Left, AK27 on the right firing one-timers from their offwings? What could have been???

But we only seen it predominately on the 5-3 PP's.

Michalek is inconsistent and injury prone. Sharks realized they overpaid after his first season and were ITCHING to rid of his 4.3 Mill.

The 3 are starting to look more and more a like(Heatley,Ch eech,9MM) Decline, Decline, DECLINE, year after year after year.

i still call that michalek will be just like fisher, earlier known as just injury prone and nothing more, and gradually becomes more consistant and healthy. cheech and heatley are 30, they are just players that had their prime early in their career, well cheech never had a prime he just had a fluke with thornton feeding him everything. michalek is still 26, give him another 2-3 more years or so, if he doesnt hit atleast 25 goals then he is done as a top 6 forward in my books.

Jonathan Huberdeau - Jason Spezza - Bobby Butler
Colin Greening - Jakob Silfverberg - Milan Michalek
Nick Foligno - Zack Smith - Daniel Alfredsson
Erik Condra - Jesse Winchester - Chris Neil

David Rundblad - Erik Karlsson
Chris Phillips - Jared Cowen

As for this Jaybo stuff, I find it hard to believe but if there was some interests in a deal then maybe Murray could convience Feaster to do a Kuba, a prospect and a 3rd for Jaybo. If not maybe Feaster doesn't need that cap space or he hopes to get a better deal elsewhere. Either way its no loss for us if they say no.

Quote from an Ottawa Citizen article from a little while back about what Alfie's concerns were with the back surgery. Sheds some light on it for the bunch of ignorant people expressing anger at him not getting the surgery sooner.

"Any time you go in and have surgery on your back, you always worry about scar tissue and if that's going to stay with you," he said. "That's probably the biggest reason (not to do it). And where I am right now, that doesn't justify having surgery, either. The way it's going (with rehab), I hope not to go down that road at all."

Its a fucking joke how people are knocking Alfie right now, he is still the heart and soul and the clear cut leader of this team.

And if he says he's going to be 100% for training camp I foresee a 65+ point season barring injury. The old Alfie will be back I'm not concerned, nor should any of you.

Blah blah blah, he's old, he should hang them up, next season is his last,

Shhhyyyaaattttt tttttt UP!

http://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie - Coaching Carousel: smart $ on Paul MacLean to OTT, Glen Gulutzan to DAL, Craig MacTavish or Mike Yeo to MIN. Not done deals yet, just IMO.

I have it on good authority that there will be a strong "Maritime Presence" in the Ottawa Senators organization next year.

What are you talking about? No announcement has been made yet!
