  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

Coach Search Underway

Up until now, it has been next to impossible to get any details on the Sens search for a head coach. A great deal of the talk about the next bench boss has been speculation. There are a handful of quality coaches out there and a number of them seem to fit the bill here in Ottawa.

The reality is the Sens really only officially started the search over the last couple days.

Bryan Murray has been doing some scouting the last little while with the draft now less than a month away but the club still wants to have a new coach in place before that day in June.  The word is he has at least started with the interview process. An article from the Citizen's Ken Warren suggests the same.

Over the next couple weeks, there is going to be plenty of talk about Dave Cameron as the guy for the job in Ottawa.

But according to a couple contacts, Cameron is a long shot at best. His name gets tossed around a lot because of the job he has done with Melnyk's Mississauga St. Michael's Majors but Cameron as the next head coach is apparently unlikely.

In the article from Ken Warren, Murray indicates that they will at least interview Bingo head coach Kurt Kleinendorst for the position.

Still looking for your feedback regarding the next Bingo Roadie. Stop by this post to see some of the options we have for the trip and let me know which one you prefer.

Should have a plan ready to go at some point tomorrow!

An interesting dilemma, I wonder if BM is looking for someone that works good with youth? a gem in the rough? or an experienced NHL coach. I'm not opposed to letting Kurt Kleinendorst getting a chance but his really helped our BSens out, why ruin that for another shot in the dark. If I had it my way I'd look for a coach experiences with working with veteran and rookies like Ken Hitchcock. He is the right man for the job IMO.

Bryan better hire someone soon because that list is just going to get even shorter when my Jets return and we hire all new management.

@NickG

I hear that. anyone of the coaches would be thrilled to be the new head coach of a new era of the winnipeg jets. Thanks to the Jets the Wings will become East and hopefully that will make the east a bit more challenging

the perenial playoff underachieving San Jose Sharks should fire Todd Mclellan... so we can hire him.

Kleinendorst... . should stay in Bingo. I hate to be greedy, but I love what he's doing with our prospects, and I want him to keep doing it for as long as possible.

He seems to have coached Heatley out of that annoying habit he had of scoring goals, so I think he might be the man.

He signed a two-yr contract.. so that leaves only next season. He's a goner after that.. someone will take him if he's not with Ottawa Sens.

Kirk Muller is probably the best fit. Any defensive structure that makes Carey Price look much better than he is would be a welcome change in Ottawa

What about Michel Therrien ?? I will keep KK in Bingo for next year, with what he did in this season and post-season with the BSens. Enough with CHL or AHL coach we already try twise with John Paddock and Cory Cloustson and it didn't work well! Go with a NHL coach with experience that can work with young players.

Jets are going to be in the Southeast next season.
They'll shift into the West the season after. Redwings will stay in the West until the 12/13 season.

I thought of an off the charts candidate the other night watching the game ..... they say they want a coach who can teach, can communicate with both the older and younger players, has head coaching experience, has won a cup and possibly has played the game in the NHL ..... so following this season my candidate is.....

Rick Bowness

That would be pretty wild if somehow Bowness was the coach again for us. If not Cameron or Kleinendorst, How about former Senators captain and 67 Randy Cunneyworth? He has a ton of AHL coaching experience and has over 300 wins to his credit at that level. I am not saying he should be the choice, just tossing his name into this for discussion.

I was thinking of him as well...... he played under Bowness, maybe he could now coach under him .... it would give the coaching staff what Bowness is missing - that being playing experience

the fact that Ottawa and BM have been so slow in the persuit of a head coach is very concerning to me. BM goes about the everyday business like it does not matter who the head coach is. Ever since BM has become GM (which in my opinion he is more then very capable) he has never hired anyone with NHL credentials as a head coach, and seems to hire only coaches that he can control, and manipulate, and I am sure that those in the NHL circles are well aware of this. It is very clear that BM has plenty of influence on who plays and who sits ie Gerber, Leclaire, Gonchar, Kuba, Kovalev. This will deter any experienced coach, that is being sought after to consider Ottawa, as these types will demand full control. Which leads me to believe we will once again have someone like Cameron, or KK, but not someone like Muller, or McCrimmon.

We need a coach with experience at the NHL level!!! The team is full of young guys and we are in a rebuild, this doesn't mean our coaching needs to be in a rebuild, we need a coach that can groom our new players into a NHL ready/competiti ve team, and we aren't going to be able to do that without having a NHL experienced coach!

As someone mentioned before, we've tried twice with a minor league coach being brought up and failed horribly, let's bring someone in who knows what they are doing...

Dale Hunter should be considered if we are willing to take on ANOTHER junior coach. I know it doesnt make much sense since KK's B-Sens are in the finals and his Bulldogs are eliminated, but Randy Cunnyworth would be a great coach for our 20th anniversary season as well to a lesser extent Rick Bowness.

I personnally hope we sign a pro coach like Dave Tippet or Kirk Muller.

agreed but the longer we go the less the chance of getting this. The better ones will go first, and maybe that is what BM would rather have, another coach he can control and have more influence on who plays where and when. Which I too agree, we have had, tried and failed, we need someone with experience, and who will coach with leadership, and will make all the on ice calls.

I'm not sure how much BM actually "controls" his coaches but considering he himself was a coach at one point, I can see how that might have more of an effect of crossing over and blurring the lines between GM and Coach. Someone the other day said it perfectly, GM assembles the team, the coach coaches the team, these are 2 different jobs that should remain independent of each other.

A good coach really is hard to find, especially these days...

The new coach needs two things:

1) Experience in the NHL as a coach
2) Has a Stanley Cup ring

None of the previous coaches have had these attributes.

Again completely agreed in principle, however I believe that BM has plenty of influence over his coaches, he has his fingerprints in the everyday dealings of the teams, including lineups, who plays, who sits, and who is sent down. Do I know this for a fact...No, but judging by who he has hired as coaches, and some of the decisions made by "coaches" in the past, and as well comments after the games it is clear who is influencing these decisions. And as you said the best coaching candidates will demand that they have the control of the game time decisions. So I see this as a disconnect, BM wants control, best coaches want the control, hence the last 4 coaches we have had, were not the best candidates with little experience.
We need this to change, but not sure BM is agreeable to this change

I just really don't want more of the same in terms of coaching. I feel like we have the right pieces on the roster but we need the right guy behind the bench to put it all together on the ice....I guess time will tell...

This is why of all the myriad of names being bandied about, Ken Hitchcock makes the most sense, and seems like the safest bet to me. This and he has had plenty of experience coaching Spezz at the Worlds.

I second the no thanks, short shelf life, bad with young players (which we have plenty of) and I believe the fatness prevents him from running up tempo practices (just kidding... not really)

I'm actually happy Cameron has continued to be unable to elevate his teams this year, hopefully this means Melnyk's voice for him is getting weaker!

Murray will never hire anyone that will threaten his powerbase or that has actually won something, which would threaten his powerbase.

I expect Cameron or Kleinendorst or someone...but not anyone experienced at the NHL level.

Wow, you have no clue do you, Ted Nolan was absolutely hated by his players, haha, the locker room was always in an uproar over his coaching tactics and player management. Many rumour have him pegged as being an asshole with power. Theres a reason he hasnt coached ever after...

@ SENSible Musings

The SENS clearly stated that they are going after someone with NHL experience, a veteran coach.

Do not have a clue, who Murray will eventually select as the Senators' Head Coach, but after 3 last coaches have all been fired, it is imperative that he interviews as many candidates, and takes his time in assessing every individual
he wants to shortlist.

He should interview the top 3 finalists, at least 2 more times, to help him arrive at the eventual final decision.

Less than 1 month remains until the June 24th Draft, and I expect that Murray will have someone hired by that date.
