  • Another Playoff Moment

Something I learned at a young age, is that if you approach playoffs with the "Cup or bust" mentality, you'll completely miss the real beauty of this magical time of year.

Playoffs are all about those "moments". Those where were you when, kind of moments. The ones that stick with you for days, weeks, even years to come. And as Ottawa Senators fans, we have been pretty spoiled the last couple of seasons.

BSens in Control

With Friday night's 3-0 blanking of the Charlotte Checkers, the Binghamton Senators sit firmly in the driver's seat in the Eastern Conference finals.  Bingo now returns home for three straight on home ice with Game 3 going on Tuesday night.

It may sound a little bit selfish but I sure hope the Checkers can win at least one game so we don't have to scrap Saturday's road trip!

Gotta love the bounce back performance from Robin Lehner in Game 2. After lasting just 20 minutes in the series opener, Lehner responded with a perfect performance and his second shutout of the playoffs. Kudos to Kurt Kleinendorst for going back to the kid after a rough outing.

Lehner has been a huge of part of this playoff run and deserved to get back between the pipes.

The game also featured two more goals from deadline pick up Ryan Potulny. He now has 13 goals in just 15 playoff games. There wasn't much talk about the Potulny pick up when it happened but he has been a top performer for Bingo in these playoffs. Gotta hand it to Murray for giving that team every chance to succeed.

  • I know I've mentioned this before but I would expect the Sens coaching search to pick up steam next week.  There are a few vacancies around the league so the Sens would be wise to get moving on this front to ensure they get their guy.
  • Sens Assistant GM Tim Murray was on the Team1200 late last week and mentioned that the club has made an offer to University of Michigan forward Louie Caporusso and are waiting to hear back. Caporusso was a third round pick in 2007.
  • The team also plans to sign forward Jakob Silfverberg in the near future. Silfverberg, Rundblad and the rest of Team Sweden take on the Finns for the Gold Medal today at 4:30 PM.

I was thinking the same thing. Let Charlotte win one game only (maybe game 4). Then B-Sens can finish it off at home with the O-Sens fans there to see it.
I'm excited for another trip...
Go- Lehner -- Go-B-Sens Go.

Also Tim Murray said they may not be able to sign all of the RFA's this off-season. I counted 10 of them... all currently in Bingo. I guess a lot depends on the demands of those players and their agents. Question is... who stays and who goes.

I dont think ottawa should give up on Regin just yet. Yes he had a bad year last year, but i think he will bounce back

Z Smith isn't going anywhere... and I think Benoit is back too, he's dating (or married to) Goaltending coach Rick Wamsley's daughter and also, I would say he definitely didn't play his way out of the organization.

Going back to Rundblad, I never said he was the next Lidstrom, I simply said that it's a lot closer if you compare David with Lidstrom rather than Salo. Anyway, someone said it best earlier, there's no comparing Rundblad with any NHLer. He hasn't played a game yet, I agree. But goddamn I think we have a superstar in the making with him. Has the hands and moves of a skilled forward. If there was 82 games in a season in the SEL he would have averaged 72 points.

I still hope Michalek is traded.

And anyone hear the news? Jagr isn't ruling out coming back to the NHL. Even said he'd love to play in Canada, named Montreal as a possible team but stressed Canada. Maybe 9MM stays if BM brings in Jagr. That'd be fuckin awesome: Jagr/Spezz combo!

0 #5 Rundbladsson 2011-05-15 15:01
I can't believe Kaigorodov split Burns and Spezz to score that goal, I remember him, another bust. We traded him to Phoenix for Comrie I think.

I personally wouldn't mind Hitchcock, he last coached with CBJ I think, and didn't do too bad considering the players he had. And he does have a ring.

I hope Mike Hoffman starts to score, he's getting the odd assist playing with Bass and Wick but only has the 1 goal so far. Where in the hell did Colin Greening go? Horrible playoffs. The rest of the team... Unbelievable! keep it up Bingo Boys!

In Lehner we trust!

I see Regin here competing for a spot.

He had one of the worst coaches ever so he gets a mulligan in my book

It is weird to have so much talent on the farm. I would not give up on Zack Smith. He is a big strong tough center with pretty good hands. I am not a big fan of Foligno or Svatos.
Quote

0 #8 Sandy 2011-05-15 17:05
Just because Greening is not putting up the points does not mean he's having a bad playoff. He's not an elite scorer.. just a big body to stand in front of the net to block the goaltender. That helps a lot if they can't see the shot coming.

Add hopefully, Caporusso - who Murray said will be assigned to Bingo and hopefully also -- Silfverberg who may get time in Bingo as well as Petersson.. looks good for next year as well.

Do you think the Sens have interest is Fasth (sp)?

huh?!?! Jagr? Please tell me that was a joke. How is that not the equivalent of Gonhar but a forward?

Let's not forget we're rebuilding, and how we got here in the first place. Let's pass on anyone over 35.

If Hitchcock is coach.. and these young players make a mistake -- you can bet he benches them. That's not the kind of coach the Sens need right now.

If Cameron is appointed head coach.. then Melnyk has too much control over the decisions.. and that would be a bad one... right now anyway.

Ottawa's 1st ..Sean Couturier C 6'4 191 Very Skilled 2 way player

Nashvilles 1st...Victor Rask C 6'2 Skilled 2way player

Forwards

Greening-Speeza-Butler ....(When you think about this might be weakest line )

Michalek - Couturier- Upshall

Silfverberg-Ras k- Aflredsson

Neil- Smith -Folingo

Defence

Jared Cowen- Sergei Gonchar

David Rundblad - Erik Karlsson

Chris Philips- Brian Lee/Kuba

Carkner

Brust

Spare parts..Shannon Winnie Regin Kuba

Stock the farm with all 2 round picks

I for one would love to see Kuba leave. Right now there is no room for both Cowen and Rundblad with:
Phillips-Lee
Gonchar-Karlsson
Carkner-Kuba

Okay -- what two are out.. to make room.

I also think McBackup is gone.
I think Brust is signed with Lehner in Bingo. Not sure what happens to Mike Brodeur.

Butler-Spezza-FA
Michalek-Regin-Alfie
Greening-Winchester-Condra
Neil-Z Smith-Foligno

Or something like that.
If Shannon is back one of Regin, Winchester or Foligno is gone. I can't see it being Winchester.
Question is can Silfverberg take the place of Regin?
I also can't see Murray giving up too much youth on this team.

I asked the question on another article that someone said Alfie is having surgery? I never heard that.. any truth to it?

@Sandy

"I also can't see Murray giving up too much youth on this team". Well considering its a re- build youth would be the point right ?

As far as that defence goes Cowen and Runblad will make the team ..Considering there upgrades to what we have Cowen youthful upgrade for Carkner and Runblad more skilled upgrade for Kuba ..

Why would Regin be replaced by a Left winger like Silfverberg? Player like Shannon or Winnie would be replaced first ..

I would think the plan on D would be to get rid of Kuba one way or the other. If they can't move him at the draft, I would expect they buy him out. He only has a year left on his contract so hopefully a team takes a shot at him.

@NewGM is right, he's listed as a Centre lots of places, but can play left wing and take draws. Actually I think he can play RW too?

Regardless he's one of my favourite prospects. I'm also excited to see what Petersson can do next year.

What are your opinions on waiving Carkner? He's a very hard-working guy with a great story, but at this point I don't think he'll play as a full-time NHLer ever again (or at least after next season) :(

Rebuild is on Silfverberg Cowen Runblad 2 1st rd picks hopefully ( Couturier)..... Greening Butler's full seasons ... and all the 2nd round picks and more too restock the farm

I really hope Murrays 'top 6' FA is a 2nd line centre. we really don't have one unless DaCosta decides he's good enough to play in the NHL just like that. That'd be sweet, however, unlikely.

In other news, Sea dogs win the QMJHL. Huberdeau with a goal and an assist. I think that's 16 goals in 19 playoff games. could be 17 in 20, just not sure how quickly they update the website.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure he'll be gone before number 6. Jeff skinner was ranked 14th or something and he went 7th. Huberdeau lights it up just as much, can't see many teams passing on him.

Dorkievicz: No, Let's not forget at all how we got here? a coach who should have been kept in the AHL. Melnyk or BM's dumb mistake

" Let's bring up CC from Bingo! he's good with the kids and knows em well, ESPECIALLY that Ryan Shannon!!!, and OH YEAH. Pittsburgh did it and look where they are right now."

A senseless dumbass who couldn't coordinate proper line changes, who juggled goalies like a John does his whores, who didn't have the common sense to put line 1 or 2 after the Pens ice the puck in Game 6 O.T. No he puts out Winnie/Donovan/ Z.Smith against a gassed Pens line.

Clouston is the reason we are where we are, and BM/Melnyk as well for bringing him in, or for not firing his ass sooner. I don't place the blame on anyone else. Well I"m lying. The horribly awful (thank god he's gone) Brian Elliott can shoulder some of it too. Big ups to Greg Sherman for tanking the best possible way without purposely losing:

Acquiring Elliott.

Taking a chance on Jagr isn't a joke, especially with Spezza playing the way he is. Nothing to lose really and a whole lot to gain. And for the record I'm confident Gonch will have the bounce back year (not Kuba as someone mentioned) and if Gonch doesn't Rundblad and EK will be happy to step up!

Oh and let's not forget again CC won't be coaching Gonchar this time. I never thought about it lol but CC is really that bad, I mean for someone like Sergei Gonchar to have the type of year he had. LMFAO yet another bit of proof how bad CC really was.

Why do people (even fans) call this a REBUILD? Panthers, Oilers, Blues, Islanders, Thrashers and Laffs are all rebuilding. Were're RETOOLING.

Last summer Tampa Re-TOOLED. There are a lot of similarities between the 09-10 Lightning and the 2010-11 Sens. BM just has to spend some money, make the right moves and draft properly, I have faith. His only mistake in the unloading was trading CK, and keeping 9MM

No, I would definitely call this a rebuild, we gave up a lot of our assets for picks, that's not something you do in a re-tool. This team needs a proper rebuild, we've been trying to re-tool since the cup run with no success. Murray has done a fine job blowing it up and re-assembling, let's just hope we do well at the draft....

Tampa is playing well, but they also have been very fortunate to have played less than healthy teams to get to the conference finals. Pittsburgh without Crosby and Malkin. Washington without Poti, Wideman, Nylander, Fehr.

Panthers, Oilers, Blues, Islanders, Thrashers and Laffs are all rebuilding. I maintain my statement.

Were're not and we don't need to. Can't wait till April when I'm proved right!

Been right about these type things before. No one thought that Jose Bautista was going to be anything special, Cito Gaston had him riding pine more often than not for his 1st 2 months or so as a Jay. I was pissed each and everytime he sat, pissed each time a pinch hitter was called and it wasn't Bautista. Than he got his chance, surprising everyone but me. Sure I wouldn't have called him to hit 54 but when I said 30+ and was laughed at, I obviously had the last laugh.

He has been BY FAR the BEST player in the MLB since Sept 09

A rebuilding team bottom feeds and doesn't make the playoffs for 3-5 years. Sens will be in the post season in 2011-12 thanks to BM's RETOOLING!

I wouldn't call Fish, Campy and CK "A LOT" off assets, some assets but not alot.

Simply pathetic, lol and for the record I don't need shit. I know what I'm talking about. When you get told by someone like Liam McGuire that you have excellent points, and then stump him on not 1, but 3 trivia questions. I would say that there probably isn't too many here that can say the same

It's fans like you (if you call yourself that) who are the reason we have the worst fan base in the NHL (next to Atlanta). Mocking those with good points and legit proof that the tough times was a brief blip named Clouston.

With the right moves, Andy playing anywhere near the level he did last year, Spezz playing better than ever, Gonch without CC coaching, EK another year under his belt (possibly scoring 20 goals) Butler possibly scoring 20 as well, and MANY other factors.. I.E RUNDBLAD!

With all that, anyone who follows and cheers for this team is a COMPLETE FOOL to think that it's going to be another tough long year with no chance at the playoffs.

There are no 'facts' because 'facts' is an a posteriori terminology and nothing has happened yet. It's good to be optimistic though and I applaud your enthusiasm. I too believe we have a good team for next season, though I believe that every year... and even during our slumps - I guess that's what being a fan is all about. There's no need to act all macho over the internet (a la AJC & PraiseAlfie84), just be excited with what's going on. This is exciting ladies and gents, this "re-tool/re-bui ld" and the prospects and players that are being brought up/in is a breath of fresh air.

The future is good and the Cup is in the horizon (well eventually.. and hopefully before Bettman kills the NHL or before my death).

GO SENS GO (all the way here from Hong Kong)!

Get over yourself. It was a joke. It's hard to take you seriously when all you do is shout about how you know everything. I'm a season ticket holder and have been for years. I guess I'm not a real fan? Just because someone doesn't take life as seriously as you, doesn't make you right.

I'm extremely positive about the sens next year. I believe we will be competitive, but not make the playoffs. I don't see an oilers type rebuild, but a rebuild nonetheless. I think we'll be the type of team that is in most games but might lose due to lack of experience. It'll be a fun year. You're just a goof and it's funny to get you all riled up. Keep talking about how we're like Tampa Bay last year and how we should sign Jagr. You've got all the answers.
Quote

0 #42 Rundbladsson 2011-05-17 18:15
You can spare the goof comment and we'll let bygones be bygones. For the record I didn't say BM should sign Jagr but was pondering IF. I definitely didn't see Kovy coming. I did however predict Gonch was coming, so far that backfired. But you never know who BM might be after.

We can agree to disagree and call it a rebuild/retool. I do see a lot of similarites between Ott/Tampa. I don't shout about how I know everything, I DO KNOW EVERYTHING kidding : p

In all seriousness though, I'm not here to make enemies with fellow fans. And I apologize for stereotyping you to the bandwagoner Sens fan, they just really piss me off. Never been a season ticket holder but I go back to day 1.

We have a legit #1 goalie who can steal games, Clouston is history, and with that goes a lot of those close games we lost last year. Games where CC was out coached & couldn't make a proper in game change to save his life.

I Don't think we'll miss 2 years in a row
