  • Another Playoff Moment

Something I learned at a young age, is that if you approach playoffs with the "Cup or bust" mentality, you'll completely miss the real beauty of this magical time of year.

Playoffs are all about those "moments". Those where were you when, kind of moments. The ones that stick with you for days, weeks, even years to come. And as Ottawa Senators fans, we have been pretty spoiled the last couple of seasons.

Update on Head Coach Situation- Bingo Wins!

(UPDATE 9:59 PM)- The Binghamton Senators picked up a huge overtime win in Game 5 to extend their series to a sixth game in Manchester. Kaspars Daugavins scored the winning goal. The SensChirp Bingo road trip dream lives on. Go BSens Go!

As a promised, a quick update on the Sens search for a new head coach.  The plan remains unchanged. The club will in all likelihood hire someone during the month of May as they would like to have someone in place for the draft in June.

That doesn't mean they haven't started to think about possible candidates.

The Sens and General Manager Bryan Murray are obviously very early in the process.  There are a few guys that are coaching teams in the first round that the Sens would definitely be interested in.

In fact, one contact suggested that the team's preferred choice is still coaching in the NHL playoffs. There are obviously a few guys that fit that criteria including Lindy Ruff, Kirk Muller, Claude Julien and Dave Tippett.

Perhaps the most interesting name on this list is Lindy Ruff. He has been in Buffalo for more than a decade but does not have a contract beyond this year. The new owner in Buffalo has indicated he wants to bring Ruff back next season but no agreement has been reached as of yet.

Ruff is a long shot but definitely a guy Ottawa would be interested in if he was available.

Dave Cameron will definitely get an interview and that should come as no surprise although people seem to be talking about him as an assistant coach more than anything. Pete DeBoer is another name that has been tossed around but there does not appear to be any interest from the Sens on that front.

Still, the word is the Sens won't "officially" begin their search until the first round of the playoffs ends. Will continue to update this situation as the off season progresses.

Ruff would be sweet! I realy look forward to see Julien being fired too! If we can't get Ruff I say Julien is our man.

ruff is sick of the prima donna miller, miller selected lalime as his backup so there's no threat to take his position from him. lalime is done in the nhl after this contrat and Ruff would love to move on.

He's the coach i'd bring in.

does murray hire the coach AND assistants?

thats seems a little stupid to me, if I'm the coach, I want to hire my own assistants..

Again, hoping for a Wings win tonight, sweeping the Yotes, and a Dave Tippett firing. If Tippett get the boot I don't see why Murray shouldn't go balls out for him. Good coach.

I think someone with NHL experience is more important than anything at this point. There isn't any need to experiment with another up and coming head coach, as much as Cameron may be liked. Clouston had no NHL experience, let's finally bring in a guy that does.

That's because everyone else besides Hughson and Cuthbert are horrendous.

People can disagree all they like, but how can you defend someone who says shit like, "Chris Phillips stops 'the tic tac' by taking away the 'toe'"!?

Full props for knowing all the players names, including call ups in obscure markets etc, but he says some stupid shit at least twice every broadcast - 20 or 30 times if the game is a boring blowout.

Lindy Ruff is definitely the best option out there if he becomes available. With that said, I'm not sure that Ottawa would be his first choice based on where our team is at in the rebuild.

I think it will really depend on who losses their job out of the teams remaining in the playoffs. ie if Julien is let go, my guess is Ruff would take the Bruins in a heartbeat but as others have mentioned, julien isn't bad either.

my preferred list in order would be:

1. Lindy Ruff
2. Kirk Muller
3. Claude Julien
4. Dave Tippet

on that note, i love the idea of adding a coach with a bit of personality...

Ruff and Julien certainly fit the bill on that front.

I agree with conor smythe,

You gotta let the coach hire the assistants. Especially if it's a veteren coach that we're hiring, which chances are, it will/should be.

I can't see BM hiring a coach like Ruff/Muller then telling him who his assistants are.

Chirp, can you confirm this? Or is every situation different?

I can't see Ruff or Tippett become available. They're two coaches that do so much with so little for their clubs. Both would be great in Ottawa but I can't see it happening.

As for Julien, please god no. I don't want to see a boring ass team play night in and night out. I don't want to be a team that shuts it down and clogs things up once they get a 1-0 lead.

Anyway, Alfie was walking towards us and all we could think of saying was "hows it goin man?". He walked straight up to my buddy with a big smile on his face and grabbed his arm and said "what are you doing wearing that stupid Leafs hat around here?"

We talked to him for a couple minutes and he said he was feeling pretty good. He's a sick guy though. Anyway I just thought I'd share that with you guys. I thought it was pretty cool haha

I would move Tippet to 2nd behind Ruff. Maybe Ruff wants to coach in Canada.
We realize that Ottawa is in a rebuild.. but it does have some nice pieces in place already with Spezza, Alfie, Michalek, Phillips and of course Anderson.
There would be no pressure next year on this coach as it is not expected to make the playoffs.

Apparently, he was an amazing player in all aspects of the game and would be a perfect fit for a coach in Ottawa.

That's right, better than Ruff, Julien, Tippett & Cameron.

I've never been as insistent on something except with my man-love for Chris Kelly's skillset.

I tell you, we'll be kicking ourselves if we don't make a solid pitch for Captain Kirk.

Why in heaven's name is Spezza the 3rd line centre behind Stewart & Tavares?

Oh another rumour by that guy we don't like, on that site we don't name... that Leafs are working on a MAJOR draft day deal to move up to get the #1 centre their scouts love.

I know the Oilers said their pick was in play -- but do the Leafs have enough to move up to even the top five.. from the bottom 10?

Way to Go Bingo!!!! hope they pull out the win in the series. The guys deserve it.

As for the coach, I agree with all of you about bringing in an experienced NHL coach. My only wish is for a good coach that preaches an aggressive style.

I know there were multiple factors but the Sens best seasons were the ones where we forchecked the shit out of the other team. Not only is it successful for a lot of teams, it was successful for them and it is much more exciting hockey to watch. We played to win every night... since the decline started, we sat back way to much, did not forcheck nearly as hard and played not to lose.

@Chirp,

Even if the Leafs could trade up to get Strome, which would be anywhere from 5-9 overall, who would/could they give up who's worth that??

Maybe Luke Schenn? Kadri?

They aren't moving any of the 30 goal fellas, (Phil,Grabo, Kulemin)I just don't see how they could actually, in reality make a trade to get Strome.

Am I crazy?

As a side note, BM should totally grab Clarke Mcarthur, just to mess with Leaf fans.

Because international hockey isn't about whose better than who... it's about who would play best with whom.

I'm sure Spezz is honored just to be on the team. Ladd and Eberle are both good players.

That makes me think less of Strome, how sad is that. I was happy they took Kadri and left us Cowen. Hopefully this year they'll move ahead of us to grab Strome and leave us a player we value more at our draft position.

In the end, although I have preferences, I am happy with any of these players so I would stay at 6.
Larsson - Consolation prize if all 5 forwards are picked first.
Landeskog - Scoring power forward and future Swedish captain.
Couturier - Only guy in this draft class to play for team Canada at the World Jrs. says something.
Huberdeau - Quick with great hands. Could be a big scorer in the NHL.
Strome - Highest ceiling according to alot of scouts
RNH - Probably the consensus #1.
Any of these guys could turn out to be the best player. So if the Leafs want to pay the heavy cost to move up, all the power to them.

I think the Leafs' 1st round picks are from Boston & Chicago -- so would be 21 - 30th.

I think the Sens could offer more with the Nashville pick to move up into top 15 than the Leafs to move into top 10 --which we assume they want to..
