Big game for Binghamton tonight as they have a chance to lock up their first playoff spot in six years. With the team desperately in need of a win, the big club has sent some reinforcements in time for their game with Norfolk.
Even though the Sens season is almost wrapped up, it should be interesting to follow the playoff run down in Bingo. That team has been impressive all year and once they have their full compliment of players in the line up, they could really do some damage.
Would expect a number of if not all of those players will return for tomorrow's game against the Habs.
Received some interesting info regarding the Sens plans for draft day. While the club's recent wins could very well mean a lower selection in June, their target has apparently remained unchanged.
According to one source, the club still has their sights set on Kitchener Rangers forward Gabriel Landeskog. Of course that may not be an option depending on where the Sens finish in the draft day pecking order but it could mean that a trade up is a possibility.
Here is how the standings look after last night's action. The Islanders are in Boston tonight while the Panthers visit the Caps. Here's hoping one of those teams can pull off an upset.
| NY Islanders | 79 | 30 | 37 | 12 | 72 | ||||||||||
| Ottawa | 80 | 31 | 39 | 10 | 72 | ||||||||||
| Florida | 79 | 29 | 38 | 12 | 70 | ||||||||||
| Colorado | 79 | 29 | 42 | 8 | 66 | ||||||||||
| Edmonton | 79 | 25 | 43 | 11 | 61 |
Huberdeau = Spezza
can't really go wrong...buuuut huberdeau is significantly better
Should be some more good scoreboard watching tonight. Go Isles! Go Panthers!
landeskog - great player that many teams have their sights on = maybe unattainable
strome - great playmaker with a scoring touch and good size
huberdeau - vry talented centreman who needs to fill out his frame a bit more = maybe corey lockeish? hopefully not though
my ordering would go lendeskog, strome, huberdeau.
for those unsold on strome, remember this play?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsf8P5LLF-I
landeskog is NOT the same type of player as hossa. He's been compared to people like mike richards. Hes a heart and hussle kind of player. from what i hear he produces, hits, fights and will do almost anything to win. definitely a winner to me though
And what about Colorado who essentially came up with a dirty plan to trade for Elliott? I hope the hockey gods punish them.
If it doesn't work out in our favour then I hope that Murray will pull off a trade and move up. Maybe we'll be able to convince Colorado to pull another Anderson for Elliot type trade and give us their pick for next to nothing lol.
you can only move back 1 spot
They explain pretty good on this site.
http://www.nhlscap.com/draft.htm
The lottery (the NHL refers to it as the Draft Drawing) involves the picks from clubs that don't make the current season's Stanley Cup Playoffs, or clubs that acquired the first-round picks of those non-playoff clubs. The lottery result does not affect the draft order for the remainder of the first round and rounds two through seven.
The club selected in the lottery may not move up more than four positions in the draft order. Thus the only clubs with the opportunity to receive the 1st overall selection are the five clubs with the lowest regular-season point totals (or clubs that acquired those clubs' first-round drafting positions). No club can move down more than one position as a result of the lottery.
1.RNH (if we win the lotto)
2.Landeskog (if he's still available)
3.Strome (one hell of a consolation prize)
4.Huberdeau (if worst comes to worst, there's still a 75% chance this guy will be an impact player)
I'll be happy with any of them, and at this point it's all but a guarantee we'll get one. we're locked into a top 5 pick now unless we end up in 5th and then someone below us wins the lotto (not very good odds).
RNH is probably the most surefire impact guy, his skill is seemingly outrageous.
Lando will no doubt be a top 6 forward who competes hard, and if his playoff production continues expect him to rise even higher in the draft. Oh, and Hossa is an awful comparison, whoever said that...
Strome is a potential gamebreaker with sick moves, speed and hands. Best case scenario he's a Daniel Sedin, worst case he's a Drew Stafford.
The Ottawa Senators have won the lottery and will draft first overall. The Senators move from fourth spot to first.
On a side note - a site enhancement might be after X number of correct posts entering the CAPTCHA code, it should remember that we are not robots and we shouldn't have to enter that any more.
:)
That's my take, and I won't be disappointed with ANY of these guys. They will all have significant impacts in the NHL at some point.
It's starting to sound like normal pre-draft posturing, hard to discern which "rumour" is true.
thanks
If they end up 5th/6th after draft lottery... is there a good chance they will try to move up to get Landeskog if they want him that badly?
Larsson should go 1st or 2nd... but of the forwards it's a crap shoot to see which one goes 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
So in a nutshell, ONE of the non-playoff teams will "win" and move up 4 spots. Everyone else will be adjusted based on that one change. The lower you finish in points, the better chance you have of winning the lottery - but for all we know Calgary could be the one movin' on up.
Personally, I think that only makes some sense if we have a clear favorite to draft at that spot. That seems like a lot to give up to move 2 spots.
It's not a surprise they want him, the question is how much. At this rate we won't get him without trading up.
Given our dominate second round of picks, losing the Nsahville pick wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, especially if they make it through the first round (GO PREDS).
As I've said all along, I truely believe that this club is committed to getting whatever player they want no matter how we finish and I think the better play of late is even more incentive to make a move to get THE guy they want.
Biggest question I have, is Landeskog guaranteed there at #3?
It's hard to say Edmonton is "tanking". They are missing some serious firepower in Hall, Gagner, Hemsky, Horcoff & Brule. It would be hard for any team to compete while missing that kind of talent.
Colorado are just bad right now. Management has made them horrendous. Same with NYI ... they are SNAWU (Situation Normal, all Wang-ed Up)
Easy, fast question to answer - No. Pretty obvious there's no guarantee he'll be there at 3rd.
@ Praise Alfie - of COURSE you only trade up if the guy you're going after is still there - why bother even mentioning that. It's why deals so often happen RIGHT before someone's pick.
Obviously no one trades up for a player that's already drafted... you also don't trade up just to have a CHANCE at the guy you want, unless you'd also be happy with the 'consolation prize', should your target be picked.
Hard to say Florida and Islanders are tanking either - remember, they DO SUCK this year (and most years). People used to accuse the old Sens of tanking to get Daigle, but you can't tank if you can't win a game in the first place.
That's a great question. It seems like the consesus that Edmonton will take Larsson or Nugent-Hopkins. But how sure can we be? They aquired a great D prospect in Teubert. Maybe they go with a forward. RNH is skilled with upside. But Skog's ready to go NOW and would complement the skilled kids really well.
I have no idea what Colorado, Florida or NYI's needs/desires are.
Highly unlikely we'd get Landeskog at #5, a roll of the dice at #3.
Pierre : This kid will be a monster LOL
Yes that is interesting. Probably a few mindgames going on between organizations right now, including this Landeskog leak to Chirp perhaps?
Out of those 5 Strome is the only one I could see definitely still being there at 4, so maybe he's the real target.
I'm still good with any of those 5 though. RNH is the one that may need more time to grow, the other 4 could all have a role in the nhl next year. Couturier might be a decent 2nd line C to have, and the wingers could definitely fit on a 2nd or 3rd line to start.
He really made it sound like (intentionally or not) Clouston would soon be Cameron and Murray would be staying on.
Again, he confirmed nothing - this was all read between the lines.
I got the same impression. I'd be very shocked if that's not how it plays out. He straight up said he owes Cameron for coming to his aid in the OHL instead of working his way up from AHL to NHL.
So much for GMs picking their coaches, but if this means the Euge will stay the hell away from trade decisions then I'm happy with that.
Edmonton and Colorado both want him. Edmonton would only trade their pick for ours if we give them a top prospect dman and center. not going to happen either way.
We won't get landeskog. its unfourtunate but cloutson has been trying to save his job and/or screw us over. BTW cloutson's facial reaction on the lessard trip yesterday was priceless!
He really made it sound like (intentionally or not) Clouston would soon be Cameron and Murray would be staying on.

I watched a replay of that interview with Bob McCown last night. Without coming right out and saying so, it sure sounded to me as if it's Murray and Cameron next year. Melnyk actually sounded more certain about Cameron than Murray but I'm not real comfortable with the owner choosing the coach for whoever the GM will be.
I read into it the same way.
I don't think players tank. It is just not in the nature of hockey players to not try to win a game (unless out of spite because they hate their coach). Nor Coaches; their livelyhood depends on winning. Management on the other hand will through design, inneptitude or a combination of both.
I get the feeling that Florida either doesn't know what they are doing or they are purposely devaluing the product to facilitate a move to a new city. It has gone on too long to be about high draft picks
He didn't say "Buckle up" but he DID say he thinks DaCosta is our 2C for next year... that kinda scares me.
i hope we can see kirk muller behind our bench next year, his family lives some where near london ontario, and he wants a job as a coach. i think if we give him the offer, he will really be interested.
The Avs seem to have been created with purpose to fail.
Florida has != Vokoun
So if you call that tanking....
I also believe thst if Colorado make a selection with the second pick they'll take Landeskog because they're set at centre ice with Statsny, Duchene and O'Reilly. If this happens I can't see Florida trading away the chance to draft RNH with the number three pick. We really need to win the lottery.
I hope he's right about DaCosta but the guy isn't even a Hobey Baker nominee this year. That's a lot of pressure for a kid who wasn't even drafted. He also said he initially thought the re-build would take four years but now he sees us in the playoffs next year and a serious contender the year after. I've long thought Melnyk is a complete idiot and nothing in that interview did anything to change that.
x 2...He also claimed mid season we would be going to the finals.
Off topic but I will ask again...why have we not seen Yost, and how long until he either posts/has his name removed from the site?
Why? The best guys in this draft are only expected to be as good as the guys they gave up!! LMAO there really was no point at all to tanking for that team, they gave up a surefire top line and verging on elite winger, a #1 goaltender, and a defence prospect who is developing very well for a draft bust and Brian Elliot. They won't get anyone in this draft worth Chris Stewart, Craig Anderson and Kevin Shattenkirk.
Nearing a resolution on that front, one way or the other. Has been an unnecessarily complicated process that I hope to have dealt with in the near future.
on a side note, (i dont know if this has been talked about in above comments and i apologize if i am bringing a topic back) but any word on the hit on z.smith yesterday?
That rule is just garbage
How about Kuba for Stastny -- now that would be the biggest fleece job ever.
With Larsson in the mix, the team is in the driver's seat to deal any of its promising up and coming young d-men for a huge return. Couturier has good size and a scoring touch. He could turn into a great 2nd line center.
I see Yost has taken his only post down or was that you chirp?
I believe he is an overager and not drafted.. but boy he laid his body on the line for his team. Appears to have a lot of heart.
http://sports.yahoo.com/juniorhockey/blog/buzzing_the_net/post/Video-Tyler-Carroll-risks-life-limb-on-amazing?urn=juniorhockey-297705
Is he an option for a UFA signing? Or is he not an AHL/NHL capable prospect.
Could you see the Sens trading up with our top 5 pick by adding SENS 2nd round pick to move up to top 2 or 3? But would Colorado/Florid a do that move.
That has nothing to do with grammar, it's a colloquial term people use every day. Deal with it....
Huberdeau is a fucking joke, he will be like a Ribeiro type player, perimiter player scared of going into the corners.
If we cant get Landeskog, take RNH or Strome. and with NSH pick get Zibanejad, great spunky player full of heart!
2nd round get Prince and I'll be happy!
Go get Brooks Laich, problem solved...
Then draft Couturier or Strome if we cant the Kog!
Our centres would be looking pretty good!

Could you see Clouston land in Florida if De Boer is gone? or out of the league altogether.
"BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced today that forward Cody Bass has been selected the winner of the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award as the 2010-11 IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The award is presented annually to an AHL player for his outstanding contributions to his local community and charitable organizations."
Yeah, I'm afraid you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to prospects.
Huberdeau is over 6 feet and will fill out just fine. He doesn't play a completely soft game, either. You're obviously just shitting on one guy because you'd prefer another, which is unnecessary.
Personally, I don't think Landeskog has any advantage over any of the forwards available in this draft besides his physical maturity, and that advantage will evaporate when everyone else catches up in terms of growth.
@John Q, I think if Matt Peumpel is around for our NSH pick, we'd be crazy not to take him. Guy is a sparkplug with decent size and has the best shot in the OHL, maybe even the CHL.
right now he's a man, playing in a league of boys. is it really that crazy that he's putting up good numbers? what happens when he plays with people his own size/bigger?
Huberdeau 6'1" 171 lbs, a year younger, and with more points = more potential
ALSO, Huberdeau in his rookie season (this year) has 7 less points than Landeskog had in TWO SEASONS combined.
duhhhh its a tough decision if you ask me..
QMJHL player... You might not think it matters, but it does. I like Huberdeau too, but you take it to far. Landeskog is a very good player.
I like Catenacci, and I think he's a very solid sleeper in this draft. He's had to suffer through playing on a brutal Sault Ste. Marie team. He's small, but seems strong and in very good physical condition, and amassed over 100 PIMs this year. Also, lets not forget he was the fastest skater at the prospect game this year.
Daniel Catenacci 67GP 26G 45A 71PTS 117PIM
I like Puempel though, he would also be a very solid pick.
Yeah pretty much every time you post you confirm yourself to be a complete moron. If Huberdeau = Spezza he'd be ranked 1st overall and would have separated himself from the rest of the draft class the way Spezza and Kovy did in 2001.
Honestly Ottawa trading up doesn't make much sense to me. The top guys in the draft haven't separated themselves from the 5-6 guys enough for it to be worth parting with a significant asset. The guy taken #5 or #6 could just as easily turn out to be the better player.
If they were so focused on getting Landeskog why the hell hasn't Mike Brodeur been in our net since the day Anderson signed his extension? We'd be talking about 1st overall if we'd done that. Ridiculous.
aha this guy is jokes. im pretty sure if huburdeau was spezza he'd go number one man.
just a reminder sens fans, the draft lottery is next tuesday at 8 on TSN.
Until then, im going to try and avoid choosing a player id like the sens to draft. we all like landeskog, but be real, there's a huge possibility we may not get him.
let's just keep our minds open and support whoever comes in here in the off season!
go nyi, go florida!!!!!!!
this guy sounds so mature and professional. he's got captain written all over him as a fan im incredibly impressed.
Anyone know what line he played on?
This is why I hate Clouston. See what Shannon did with good minutes, the guy clearly has offensive ability more than defensive ability. So it seems like a waste to play Da Costa on line 4. Try him with Michalek and Greening or something? That leaves you Spezz with Mutler and player-X
Calling the OHL a league of boys is a bit of a stretch. I don't know the exact breakdown but I'm willing to bet that the majority of players are in fact older/just as big as Landeskog. He will need an adjustment period to adapt to the skill and size at the NHL level, but who are any of us to say he can't become a Chris Stewart type player with leadership abilities. It would be nice to see him in an Ottawa uniform, although it seems unlikely at this point.
I know Philly is a big physical team.. that he may have been intimated the 1st period -- as he did not have a good one. Made a couple of mistakes or appeared not to be working hard -- then Clouston just benched him. These young guys have to learn from their mistakes.. play him... Sens have nothing to lose.
Chirp, do you think, that if Bingo makes the playoffs (we all know they will).. that the Sens might consider arranging buses for a road trip for some of the Ottawa fans to go see a couple of playoff games in Bingo?
I know I would surely go..
first of all, final rankings arent in, after the playoffs huberdeau will be ranked higher than couturier and strome.
spezza was drafted number 2, not one. they are highly comparable players.
QMJHL:
Fleury 1, Crosby 1, Brassard 6
OHL:
Nash 1, P.Kane 1, Stamkos 1, Tavares 1, Hall 1, Spezza 2, E.Staal 2, Ryan 2, J.Staal 2, Doughty 2, Seguin 2, Horton 3, Bogosian 3, Duchene 3, Gudbranson 3, Weiss 4, Pouliot 4, Pietrangelo 4, Gagner 6
WHL:
Bouwmeester 3, Barker 3, Hickey 4, E.Kane 4, R.Johansen 4, Ladd 4, Price 5, Alzner 5, L.Schenn 5, B.Schenn 5, Niederreither 5, Upshall 6, Brule 6, B.Connolly 6
US/NCAA/Other:
E.Johnson 1, Van Riemsdyck 2, J.Johnson 3, Toews 3, Turris 3, Ry.Whitney 5, Vanek 5, Kessel 5, Wheeler 5, Montoya 6
Europe:
Kovalchuk 1, Ovechkin 1, K.Lehtinen 2, Malkin 2, Hedman 2, Svitov 3, Pitkanen 4, Zherdev 4, Backstrom 4, Chistov 5, M.Koivu 6, M.Michalek 6, Filatov 6, Ekman-Larsson 6
Hard to tell, they both played in different leagues at entirely different times.
The Q is known as not being as strong and competitive as the O.
Also, if Huburdeau is Spezza-like, we would ave heard about him for years now. Jason Spezza was the very first player ever to have gotten exceptional status for the OHL draft. Only 3 players have EVER done that, including John Tavares and most recently 15 year old Aaron Ekblad. Huburdeau just broke out this season.
Also, Spezza participated with the Canada Junior National team, of which Huburdeau did not take part.
Different players man.
Oh, and Huburdeau won't be a number one or even number two pick.
That is a great idea. I'll ask around and maybe recommend it to some people. I think there would be a bunch of fans interested in something like that.
I know a lot can change, but heres how I see it:
next year: Alfy, his last year because he will retire
2012/13: Spezza for the next 4-5, then maybe to Landeskog, or maybe Spez keeps it if its going well...
Do you see Karlsson ever getting it?
Maybe able to watch online @ http://ahl.neulion.com/ahl/ but will need MS Silverlight.
We're predicting next year's Sens-team awards!
Most points: Spezza
Most goals: Spezza
Most assists: Spezza
Top +/-: Spezza
Worst +/-: Wiercioch (sp?)
Most PIMs: Neil
Offensive pleasant surprise: Greening
Offensive disappointment: Regin (yet again)
Best defensman: Karlsson
Defensive pleasant surprise: Rundbladt
Defensive disappointment: Wiercioch
Best new player (includes this year's AHL players): Greening
Defense with most minutes played: Karlsson
Most consistent hard-working player (the former Fisher award): Foligno
Top penalty-killer: Foligno
just copy paste the format.
Tryant, this is by far your dumbest post of the day. This shows how little you really know. I bet you don't own any mirrors cause there is no way you could look at yourself in one.
Meeeeeeeeeeeeow!
(I WAS dealing with it ;D)
Seems like Couturier is the only name I haven't seen management drop... Hmmmm...
Ya, doesn't make much sense to be tipping your hand two months before the draft. Misdirection?
In any case, good for them. Though I'll be the first to admit I was hoping for a good hard tank job to finish out the season, I'm proud of the way the boys have played down the stretch and I'm excited to see them play again next year.
I want to see what the younger guys can do with a full season here, and with our stockpile of draft picks I'm also hoping for a good influx of new guys on the farm in Bingo. Totally not against Murray coming back in an advisor role, if not extend him for a year.
It's exciting to watch the Sens in game. As fans, maybe we grew a sense of entitlement after years of good player performance and playoff appearances.
I'll support a loser that's learning how to win.
GO SENS GO!
You are correct in that, we have fans have been use to a high-flying, high scoring, exciting team (until the last couple of years that is). It's difficult to see how they 'fell'... but it happens to a lot of teams that miss some drafting years or bad drafting to keep up their young players development flowing into the NHL. That's what Ottawa went through for close to 6 yrs. The college guys (yes some are Muckler's) are starting to turn pro. Louie Caporusso will be the only other one this year.. and Murray indicated in the season ticket holder meeting.. he will most likely be in Binghamton.
Wacey Hamilton will most likely end up in Bingo as well -- and maybe some other over ager CHL player that was undrafted (should the Sens sign one)... thinking Thomas Nesbitt of the '67's.. I think he might be a good signing for the Sens. Most likely an AHL player.. but you never know.
I REEEEEEEEAAAAAA AAAALLLLLLLLLLY YYYYY think we should trade up/ down to get Jamie Oleksiak, depending on how well he does. You can't go wrong with having a giant on the blueline
There is a guy named Jeff Hayes he played for the Generals and Storm (I think) in the OHL, he went to my high school. He did well in the O he played with Taveres and Hall for a while, he would be a solid Over-age signing.
They are tied right now going into overtime.
All they needed was a point.
They have quite a few injuries -- Schira & Corey Locke.
Can any Bingo fan update us on the injuries. Are they out long-term?
Playoff bound.
I think it takes more than one player to win a game. He can be a leader but if the goaltending is not sufficient.. or scoring is hard to come by.. you can't do it all yourself.
But we shall see who they pick. I'm sure the Sens scouts have been all over Canada to the CHL games and know who they like...I'll trust their judgement.
Yeah I saw him play vs Gatineau and he was pretty much invisible all game! Beaulieu is what makes that team run so smoothly. Huberdeau is a bust, you heard it here first.
Also people comparing him to Spezza...are you high? He's nothing like Spezza. If Huberdeau is Spezza then RNH is Gretzky, Couturier is Lemieux, Larsson is Orr and Landeskog is Messier.
