  • Spezza Ready to Return

(UPDATE 2:21 PM)- Paul MacLean has confirmed what has been speculated the last couple days- Jason Spezza is ready to return to the Ottawa Senators line up.  The Sens number one centre has been out of the line up since January 27.  A huge boost for this team as they return to Scotiabank Place for Game 3.

Anderson Starts, Michalek Returns

The 28th place Ottawa Senators return home tonight to take on the Washington Capitals.  Craig Anderson, who was excellent last night, makes his second straight start and Milan Michalek returns to the Ottawa line up.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:38 PM.

The Sens are coming off a shootout win over Lundqvist and the New York Rangers last night at MSG. Craig Anderson shut the door through five round and Erik Karlsson was the only shooter to score, snapping a low shot that beat Lundqvist on the glove hand side.

The win pushed Ottawa past Colorado in the standings. The Avs fell to the Leafs on home ice.

Roman Wick was return to Binghamton this morning to make room for Michalek. Curtis McElhinney will miss the games for personal reasons which means Mike Brodeur will dress as the back up tonight.

Will post the forward lines when they become available.

I know a lot of fans are concerned about draft positioning right now and I don't blame them. But the more I think about it, it really seems like there is little difference between picking at two or three. Assuming the order holds in the lottery, a third overall pick is likely to land the Sens one of Landeskog or Nugent-Hopkins.

A win-win, I'd say.

Of course that's assuming either the Oilers or Avalanche take Adam Larsson. I really don't see how the Oil can pass on Larsson. They need help on the back end and he seems like exactly the type of prospect they're missing.

If Ottawa passes the Panthers and picks outside the Top 3, then you have to think Ryan Strome becomes the target. Again, a terrific prospect and probably the player with the most upside in the entire draft.

What about Couturier? he is more NHL-ready than Strome and in my opinion he is a better prospect. He made the WJ and has been very good this year. It seems like people are throwing him under the bus a lot lately.

It seems whenever we have a player return from injury, we lose. Like we seem confused as to having that player back.

Optimism - 3-1 Sens
Pessimism - 4-2 Washington

At this point, as everyone keeps pointing out, we lose a game we win - we win a game we win... so no matter the outcome I will be happy. As long as Semin doesn't score. Or Ovi.

Current projected bottom 5 - we're behind Florida based on one less win, same total points. Drafting 4th is very likely at this point (but doesn't worry me too much):

Islanders 79 pts
Florida 75 pts (29 wins)
Ottawa 75 pts (28 wins)
Colorado 69 pts
Edmonton 61 pts

I think we take Strome as high as 3rd. You can see from TM's comments last nightr that Sens were prepared to trade down. I believe that is because Strome is their guy.

Almost certainly, he would be picked ahead of Courturier and I believe ahead of Landeskog as well. Strome may have the highest upside of anyone in the draft and thst's what we should desire, isn't it. Also, he's a C, a position that needs strengthening big time. Is Zach Smith our 2nd line C of the future?

The reason why Lessard is still here, is because he is cheap and is not helping in bingo, he is filling a spot thats it.

Would you rather have a guy like Wick, Locke or any other BINGO player play 5min a game.

Also bingo needs good players for there playoff run, they dont want to blow up that teeam as well.

I would much rather see a bunch of players from Bingo get a reasonable shot at this time of the year - Hoffman, Wick, Dzyrinski (sp?), Kasper - AND be played more than 5 minutes a game

I thought there was some excitement about Hoffman pre-season, what's happened with him?

I know I took a lot of heat for suggesting this with Butler (but it's too late for him) but for Condra and Greening if they play every remaining game they both will have 26 games this season and neither will have rookie status next year. Seems like a no-brainer to find a way to keep them out of one game each the rest of the way (at least) so they can both retain their rookie status.

And I fully support the idea of giving Bingo a good shot in the playoffs. So many of these guys have made comments about how they all came up together and support each other etc - I think it would amount to a reward to say: "Go back to Bingo and reap the rewards of your hard work there earlier this year."

Looking ahead another year, it will be interesting (come Training Camp 2012) to open the Cupboards and see what is avaialable in Baby Sens land. Add this years draft picks to the mix of what we already have down there....we could see some exciting hockey players in 2 years. (Not saying that next year will blow chunks, but just saying the ranks will be fuller by Fall 2012).

AHL rules state a player on an NHL roster at the trade deadline is not eligible for inclusion on a Calder Cup playoff roster. To comply with the rule, NHL teams send players down to the AHL briefly on paper at the trade deadline then immediately call them back up.

I believe the Senators made sure all the players they wanted to, qualify for the playoffs down there.

Sweet - it'll be cool to have Michalek back, he was on a heater earlier.

And I'm never unhappy to see M.Brodeur in a Sens jersey, even if its as a hatrack. I hope we resign him, if only because we can plug him in anywhere from Elmira to Ottawa and he'll be serviceable. Its good to have a guy with that sort of flexibility.

Bold prediction of the night; at some point we'll hear some combination of the words, "Spezza" "to" "Karlsson" and "scores!"

I agree with SC ... the draft will work itself out (Strome is terrific) and I am personally sick of losing. I'm also a big fan of the Anderson signing and he proved supporters right last night with a terrific performance. Having said all this I would like for us to run with the other goalie after tonight and continue to audition the young guys. Ideally we want to end up in the top 3 and my preference (again) is RNH ... his upside is very high and he would be terrific in the shoot-out.

I really think that the Sens are not worried about the draft now because they have made their mind up on who they'll pick. That guy is outside the top 4 so they aren't worried. I believe the guy isn't Strome but Jonathan Huberdeau a dynamic player from the Quebec league - has size can play center or wing. Hell Saint John lost 9 games all year. He's a real gem. + he has a mean streak he doesn't like losing at all. A good pick with the Nashville pick would be Boone Jenner a good 3rd line center with grit a real power forward.

I don't know if I stand alone or not, but I would absolutely sign LeClaire to a league minimum 2-way, or even slightly above league minimum should there be any competition, in order to retain his services. He played spectacularly when healthy this year, and at league minimum I would take the chance, and if he still battles health problems, he can be put in the minors and forgotten about.

As long as we have an exit strategy (2 way contract) in place, his natural talent is worth taking a shot at.

I think that would send the wrong message to Anderson - that we're giving Leclaire a shot at winning his job back. I'd rather sign someone that's a clear-cut #2 and let Lehner eventually push for Anderson's job.

I actually laughed at this. Is it that important to keep them together??!?!?! So much chemistry! Clouston might put MM on the second line to spread things out, but Michalek is EASILY our 2nd best candidate for a top line player after Spezza.

He way better than either Butler or Greening so don't be surprised if he's on line one. Both those kids have played well, but neither is first line material except that they're on he Sens...

I think it's more that we need to see what we've got in Butler and Greening. Playing guys with Spezza these days is more about getting them minutes and opportunities to show what they've got. We already know what we have in MM9, so I'd rather see Spezza playing with guys that we don't have a slot for next year just yet.

To that end, I wish we could have gotten Wick more time with Spezza to sink or swim. Svatos too. It seems clear we don't need either one next year, but why not get them a few games with Spezza to be sure?

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think when you call a guy up as injury replacement you have to specify the injured player. For example, Wick was specifically called up as emergency replacement for MM9 - so down he goes. Can't recall if they used emergency call up for Alfie or not though.

As for who to send down, it's almost a coin flip. Maybe it depends on which guy they want to see play with Alfie?

Even tho it does give me a bit of a laugh that someone wastes their time like that.

Ever think "you're racking up the minuses" because you are talking about stuff that you should be posting in the site feedback forum? It is not being abused. It is clearly marking comments for people that are not to be read as they are useless information for them. Is that not what it should be for?

I'll post even more comments about the site because it IS comments on the website. Whats useless to you clearly isn't useless to everyone. Tookie still leaves a bad taste in your mouth even on the new site.

So Clouston starts Anderson even though he is already signed and we've seen what he can do. Why not start McElhiney? The team calls up a guy like Wick who shows signs of being a decent player but he parks him on the bench so the team doesn't get a chance to give him a proper evaluation.

Its time to fire Clouston NOW!!!! Understandibly, he's only interested in his record as a coach and it is doing a bigdisservice to the team in terms of evaluating the talent and the drafting position. These games don't mean shit. The team should be focused on evaluating talent instead of looking to win.

Meh, I'm ok with either place. Johne and conor smyther have both been extremely helpful during the transition and I'm all ears when it comes to their feedback.

We do have a minus bandit that is ruining it for the rest of us though. From what I can tell he gets up around 9:30 and goes to bed around 11:30 because comments outside of that range are usually exempt.

I just hope he is hitting refresh lots and making time to click on the ads!

Wick was sent to Bingo and McElhinney is out and Mike Brodeur will backup Anderson tonight. Expected Line combos:

Greening-Spezza-Butler
Condra-Shannon-Michalek
Foligno-Smith-Neil
Svatos-Winchester-Lessard

Phillips-Lee
Hale-Karlsson
Kuba-Wiercioch

Anderson
Brodeur

Interesting to hear Anderson had the same surgery that Glasscal just had. Do we dare take another chance of him? I Sure as shit don't want him to go to another team for nothing and end up being a reliable starter. What are the chances he goes injury free for a year? Vegas?

There seem to be problems in old posts. But today seems well balanced. If people going to start whining because they are getting minuses its time to get rid of it. If no then maybe give us instruction on what we can and can not minus? If it that strict. No one wanna get banned.

Plus the things you agree with or good points you think are made. Minus the comments you think are wrong or ridiculous. If you feel like you are minusing more than plusing, maybe reduce how often you rate or maybe even just rate only the positive comments and forget about the rest.

At the 1st Intermission team 1200 will update you on everything going on Leclaire about his surgery and his status. If anybody actually cares just letting you know. All I know is I think Leclaire is a backup at best now at the NHL level will all the injuries he has.

I love your blog, Chirp, but I'm afraid I'll be forced to stop visiting it. As I've mentionned before, I can't access your material from work when I clic on 'Read more'.. It brings me straight to the comments section. Plus, the layout is all weird. I didn't have this problem with your old format.

Can't this problem be fixed?? I'm sure I'm ot the only Federal employee who loves your site, but can't get access from my work computer.

I'll be forced to go read 'the 6th Sens' or Eklund, I'm afraid. Don't have a problem with their site.

It works fine for me from my Gov't office. Only at lunch time of course.....

Oh it did. Just a heads up though, those refs are going to give the Caps a freebie for that debacle.
It should have been a 4-minute penalty against Hale. Even though it was clearly accidental.

At a severe paycut (if he's willing), I think he'd be a great backup.

I think Foligno needs to play with Alfy and Michalek next year, I've always pushed for Foligno to be a 3rd line guy, but clearly we don't have the top 6 talent to push him to the 3rd line next season.

Except of course when it is Chara laying the hit. Then the other team just complains to the ref and calls 911.

This area was exactly the problem area on the team,
excluding Chris Campoli of course, who is nowin Top4 on Hawks defense.

By moving the above players out, Bryan Murray has turned
this team 180 degrees , and we can now enjoy balance of season.

Was at Caps game, and can remind Tookie that we are now beating any top team by working hard !
