I don't think it's quite that odd, but I am scratching my head a bit. Boyle is coming off an injury, and he's in his UFA years. They got a good return for Boyle in the trade with SJ (Carle, Wishart, 1st & 4th), so I think the trade made sense for the owners. Now, however, they desperately need someone to run the powerplay and to begin their breakouts. It would be really risky to try Carle, Wishart or Picard in that role, since they're all so young and have hardly any experience. Boyle put up a decent amount of points last year and played a lot of minutes. Meszaros may be only 22, but he's got three solid years experience playing a good amount of minutes at the NHL level.

I think it's risky to sign Meszaros to a long term contract at 5M+/yr. But this ownership group seem like they aren't afraid to take risks. He's still so young that it will probably be good value in a year or two if he continues to develop.

Should this deal be realized, it will leave a big hole in the Sens roster this season. It will be a struggle to make the playoffs and generate offence from the blueline. Our powerplay will also suffer. In the long term, it's probably good for Ottawa, as the draft picks will be good value (I don't much rate TB's chances in the East.)

Meszaros leaving will be too bad because he has a lot of potential, but the picks will be worth it. Especially if its true that the negotiations were not going well...we might as well get rid of him before he brings down the morale in the locker room. It seems odd that Tampa would trade Boyle and then sign Meszaros.

As per NHLSCAP.com, which cites Article Ten of the CBA, " Teams must use their own draft picks for the purpose of compensation, including picks that were traded and later reacquired. They cannot use draft picks acquired from other teams (which were not originally theirs) to offer as compensation." That means the Lightning cannot acquire another team's third round pick in 2009 and use it as compensation to sign away Mezsaros.
