It all starts as the power of individuals. We miss one regular season game and I am not attending a game or buying a nickel worth of merch ALL YEAR. That's not a veiled threat and no, I don't need a Sens car flag to get to work. Screw the oil companies is a pretty weak analogy! x2...I say for the foreseeable future, as i do not intend to go running back next season either. I won't stop being a fan, I will watch the games on TV, and still cheer for them....But my money will either go towards paying down those debts we all have too much of, or NFL. WOW!! Thanks for that insight you two! Man! Such strong wills and such character!! If you're so pessimistic about the outcome and resolved about quitting, why don't you just quit this site as well while you're at it? Maybe there's a Debtchirp somewhere out there for you...

I wonder how much beer he had in him when he broke that trophy? Smith is a good 3rd or 4th line centre. He plays a physical game that McLean preaches. He's a decent skater.. and he has a good shot.. when he wants to use it... We don't know what the $$ of the contract is.. do we? Murray is getting a head start on signing some of next season's expirying contracts...

YES.. YES.... YES Also, some comments from Karlsson yesterday... From the Ottawa Sun... "Karlsson had no second thoughts about returning to North America even with a cloud hanging over the start of NHL camps. If there is a lockout, he plans to try to find a place to play, but understands his options are limited. “Sweden closed their league and that was probably going to be my No. 1 option if it was available. It isn’t, so I guess I’m going to have to wait to see what’s going to happen here and I’m probably not going to do anything here for awhile,” he said. “It depends how long it drags on. We don’t have that many options anymore. Russia is one. I don’t know if you want to go there anymore. We’ll see about that. Switzerland is going to be hard because they only have so many imports on each team ... maybe the Swedish Elite League changes its mind once (the lockout) gets closer.”

Any online petition does squat.. They will just delete it. To get noticed -- is for fans.. by the 10's of thousands picket the NHLPA office in Toronto.. and the NHL league office in NY City. Now that's not going to happen... The only other way to show your displeasure is to not go to games. Now in Canada that will not happen as well as in some of the bigger markets in the US. But what about the other struggling markets? Nashville, Dallas, Phoenix, etc. What if they lose 20% of their fan base? Will the league take notice? Especially if they lose what they have worked to hard to gain the last several years. The word is the League wants a 10 yr deal as the NBC TV broadcast rights are for 10 yrs.. and the NHL will want that renewed. If it is another short-term contract.. and another lockout (after this one) .. NBC could walk away.. and with it the TV $$ the league so badly wants. So no side wins if there is a lockout. They had Paul Kelly, former head of the NHLPA on the Team 1200 -- he stated that the league could survive a short-term lockout.. but losing a full season such as last time will do irreputable harm to the NHL. Fehr & Bettman are supposed to be very smart men... let's hope they realize this.

But in the meantime it doesn't mean that I can't get frustrated and angry and the lack of progress and perceived lack of urgency from both sides. Apparently some guy named Peter Adler in Edmonton is stating that the NHL & NHLPA are still talking behind the scenes. Now personally, I don't believe that at all...
Not true, if people want to stay home then do it, other fans from other teams will do it aswell, if enough people do that, yes it will hurt individual teams but also hurt the league if enough fans do it league wide and if the league is hurting you can bet your ass Bettman & the players will want to reflect that in the next CBA so he doesnt have fan backlash again, ultimately, us fans, we can control the outcome. No fans = no money = no league... True enough, but what I'd love to see (and I know it won't happen) is to have the league resume play just in time for the Winter Classic - and nobody show up. That would be just what the league deserves... This would be the ultimate way for Fans to send a message without hurting your local, small market club. This is a more realistic approach too from an organizational standpoint. The absolute icing on the cake would be if all the college, OHL and other non-NHL games at the big house sold out. True hockey fans love hockey, not the NHL.

In the 1980s in England, hooliganism was such an issue for football teams and the grounds were generally not very nice places to be that attendances for all the major clubs started to plummet - and I mean to less than 60% of capacity for most teams in the top division. This was a huge factor in football finally realising that they had to do something to make it a better environment for supporters other than 20-40 year old males. This, allied with a significantly changing social backdrop in the UK led to an increase in attendance and a far better and more enjoyable product. Attendances are unlikely to reach the heights they did in 1930s to 1960s but that is more to do with the capacities in the grounds generally being less now than they were because you aren't allowed to stand up anymore. I think boycotts can work against an individual team or organisation but a league wide boycott is almost impossible to effectively generate.

Hax you're actually wrong there. The league's primary focus is on rink attendance but tv viewership is almost as important. If people stop going to games but still watch just as much on tv then the ratings go up and the next tv contract will be even bigger. The tv revenue is massive. Nowhere near nfl or mlb but its a BIG chunk. So realistically a boycot has to be a 100% boycot. Tickets, merchandise and TV as well as website hits and other revenue streams

Was there a boycott in sports history that ever had a significant impact? Other than some nice sound bites for the media that is? I think fan energy is better spent being visible with facebook/twitte r stuff or in person demonstrations at games when they come back. There's little hope in impacting attendance itself so focus energy elsewhere. Having said that, all the league really cares about is attendance so by nature of that it's unlikely fans will have much impact.

How can you know for sure? if lets say half the league wide fans boycott and each arena is at half capacity for the year. U dont think that would hurt the NHL to a point where they would never let that happen again? They would fix the CBA real quick and come to much better agreements to help the league for the fans. Not saying that would happen but surely arena's being half full would certainly hurt the league, no doubt. If a league wide drop of lets say 3B to 1.5B, Bettman & the NHLPA would shit their pants and certainly work harder and more dilligently to get something done so fans dont do that again.

Wow @ Hax, that is a very pessimistic view. But funny because that statement has a tonne of truth to it. While the idea is awesome and could have a potential impact in theory, it would take a small army of extremely dedicated, smart, motivating and extremely influential people to make something like this happen. http://www.nhlfa.com/ over 30,000 members and they have one news release about the current situation from Aug 17th and their 4th latest entry was about "Fans Determine Priorities for 2009-10 Season" prime example of what would more than likely happen with anyone who tries to start a group with a significant enough membership to make the league and players listen There is a petition out there on Twitter that is up too 4200 signatures for a fan boycott or just to be heard. #NOLOCKOUT www.ipetitions.com/petitions/hockey Its a start...

That comment kinda slid through the cracks! Hahaha. Seriously though does anyone else feel that this was literally done just to bring a headline to Colorado? Don't get me wrong I love the kid he's a great player and has the potential makings of a great captain, but did they need to make him the captain when he's only 19? Seems hard to believe that the older players could draw inspiration from him and follow his example when he's young enough to be the child of some of the Avs' players... No, I wanted the Sens to f'ing tank just to get this guy!!!! I knew he would be captain within a year or so, fuck, I'm going to go cry in a corner now.....oh what could have been! Guy was the PERFECT fit for taking over for Alfie. Oh and was excatly what the Doc ordered...a goal scoring power forward winger... 100% Right Tooks. Already an excellent two-way forward and only a matter of time before he's in the mix for a Selke, already rookie of the year, great team player. But we'd rather have Hyena-Laugh Spezza as captain...God help us all. Hey I like the 'kog too, but lay off Spezza. He hasn't been "giggles" for years.

I love the "if there's a lockout - I'm done with the NHL!! I won't watch another game" statments... This has the same weight as "screw the oil companies and lets all avoid buying gas on such and such date". It never works, we're all a bunch of suckers in the end. You'll all be on here discussing the roster the day the season begins, however late that will be. Its a labour dispute. Its part of the business. The CBA had an expiry date on it. Those of you who have purchased tickets will all be refunded if the season is cancelled. Until everyone realises that the end of the world is not imminent, enjoy all the other great hockey around, or better yet, grab a stick and a ball, or a puck, and go play for the "love of the game".

The longer the lockout goes on.. the worse for the NHL. MLB playoffs start in a month. NFL starts this week. NBA starts in Oct (I believe).. Once that happens the US hockey fan will find something else to watch. The NHL will be out of sight.. out of mind scenario. They become irrelvant. US fans will not care if they come back or not. Chris Phillips said in an Ottawa Sun article.. that the NHLPA is ready to get back to the 'table' to negotiate. Well the first step should be a counter proposal to what the NHL offered. All the PA has done is delay, delay. It took them a month to put in a response to the first NHL offer... No side seems to be in any hurry to get this done. No talks -- no season.. it's a simple as that. They are in for a big surprise when and if they come back..They will see a lot less fans in the stands in the good old USA. But the NHL came out today and said they want to move free agency from July 1sst to July 10th. Nice to see where their priorities lie...

Wow @ Hax, that is a very pessimistic view. But funny because that statement has a tonne of truth to it. While the idea is awesome and could have a potential impact in theory, it would take a small army of extremely dedicated, smart, motivating and extremely influential people to make something like this happen. http://www.nhlfa.com/ over 30,000 members and they have one news release about the current situation from Aug 17th and their 4th latest entry was about "Fans Determine Priorities for 2009-10 Season" prime example of what would more than likely happen with anyone who tries to start a group with a significant enough membership to make the league and players listen A little bit tongue-in-cheek of course. And not saying NHL fans are anything different than any other group of people. But while it's totally fine to fantasize about some sort of grass roots movement making an impact, it ain't gonna happen. For every intelligent, committed fan who might take part, there are literally THOUSANDS of sheep that will not miss a beat in their NHL-related spending. And the ironic and slightly dangerous thing is that smaller markets (like Ottawa) typically have a higher concentration of committed fans - so if such a thing really did get off the ground, we'd suffer more than most cities and the NHL still couldn't care less.

As you can tell, I'm trying to avoid all CBA chat talk, it's driving me nuts and makes me mad just thinking about it. So with that, here are a few thoughts. By now everyone has seen the reports on Bogosian being sidelined 4 to 6 months after wrist surgery. He's been the subject of persistent trade rumours, so does anything think it would be worth the risk for Ottawa to make a move for him? Think about it, most seasons an injured player trade is a bad gamble. But if we have half a season lost to lockout, missing 4 to 6 months of none playing time isn't so bad, especially if the trade isn't too significant. What would the Jets want in return? Roberto Luongo says it just "makes sense" for him to return to the Florida Panthers. TSN posts this which makes you think something happened, only to read into it more and find out it's just a statement he's made. First off, why does he need to make that statement? Is it to put more pressure on Vancouver to get something done with them? Why would Florida actually consider this idea? Having to trade players in return and take on such a contract with a NTC? RL would only play about 2 seasons before Jacob Markström takes the reins from him, just like Cory Schneider did to him. Edit - The statement about Bogosian not having a contract, may have been wrong. Oops

I just did the calculation. I spent over $300 last winter and I think more the previous year (ironically). That can fairly go to alternative use unless the NHL is in full swing by Oct. 11. you know this really could have some legs, if we could get all the fans to agree that we the fans will not spend a cent on any merchandise and will boycott the first 3 months that they get to playing, this will entice them to get something done asap,

One thing people forget (which is understandable as we're just rabid hockey fans) is that the "pot" which the owners and players are splitting up is always going to be massive. Even if another lockout hurts the league in the short term, they're still splitting up insane amounts of money. So "fair" will look unfair to most 9-5 working fans, but just because a guy who is scratched half the year still makes half a million doesn't mean it's not fair. I'm not saying the NHLPA is blameless here, but to suggest that the players should just accept any offer is a bit naive. Now, that doesn't mean the players can't be pushing to get a fair deal done sooner. The part that upsets me the most is the apparent willingness of BOTH sides to let the season start late or not even have a season this year. THAT is what I get mad about - not about who's greedier or how much tickets cost. That's just supply and demand.

There is nothing fair about what a NHL player earns. It is a privilege to play in the league, period. Yes they have worked hard to get to the NHL, and are compensated in every way imaginable. I don't have a dog in this fight. Fan sentiment is strong because, despite the spin, they only reason, on both sides is greed. Revenues are up, salaries are up...and to reward our loyal fan base...we'll take away the game again. Fans only want what is fair. Players want more of our money. Owners want more of our money. That is the one thing that isn't...fair.

He played 30 games last season... his salary was probably around 500K. He spent most of his time in the pressbox. Take a hockey fan making about 50K.. it would take 10 yrs to make up what he earned as basically a healthy scratch. Apparently he got married recently.. just found a few pictures of the wedding.
This is what kept me from cancelling. If there was a way for me to keep my money away from the league, as opposed to the Senators, it would be a no-brainer. Or if I knew that every fan around the league was taking the same course of action. But like you said Sandy, it's not the Senators I am disappointed in. It's the league and the players collectively. Exactly this and people have to be careful. We have some pretty dedicated hockey fans on this blog and if some of you are cancelling, boycotting. etc. then you know the casual fan is as well and unfortunately the only outcome will be hurting the Senators. Not a path any of us want to go down, I hope

Look I'm as frustrated and angry as the next fan.. but I love my Sens. Murray & Melnyk have not caused the issues this league is dealing with right now. Yeah the contracts to Kovalev & Gonchar were questionable... but they were not the 10 & 14 yr contracts for 100M+. Those are the GM's that put the system in the mess it is now. People cancelling their season tickets hurts the Sens. Do you really think Bettman would work as hard to keep the Senators in Ottawa.. like he is doing for Phoenix? Not on your life. I have spent a lot of money on my Sens. Season tickets for close to 10 yrs. Jerseys. Trip to Mtl last year. Trip to Florida for 2 games a couple of years ago.. But hockey is my passion. I love it.. It keeps me sane. I agree with Chirp.. this lockout is different in the fans mind. The 2nd time in 8 yrs. Both sides risk a lot in taking the fans for granted. I can't believe they don't see this. Take 50% now NHLPA on 3.2B revenue and growing. Or the lockout comes.. you lose salary.. revenues will plummet.. and then you take 50% on much less. So tell me how that makes any sense. Oh Chirp, loved to reply on twitter to McGratton.. Priceless. The AHL teams that will get on TV are only the ones in Canada.. so Edmonton & Ottawa fans will not see their AHL teams as they are in the US.

Team management sent out a letter along with your first 5/10 game tickets last week explaining the situation. - You either get your money back for each missed game (at the end of each month + 1.25% annual interest calculated by the date the game was cancelled to the end of the month) or - You get a credit towards your account for each game the gets cancelled, plus interest at the rate of 5% annually from the time the game is cancelled to when you use your credit. If the season is cancelled outright (late december/mid january) then you will also have the cash out option. Unfortunately you cannot simply cancel outright. Mis Oh I understand all of that, I am just very upset that these greedy bastards can't get their act together. Like someone else said, I am going to get to the point where I don't even care if they come back or not (after a certain point). It's frustrating to put my hard earned money to support a team and not be shown the same respect by the people I am supporting.

First time buying season tickets but if they ( both sides ) don't get their act together (very soon ) on this new CBA it will be my last time too. Would love to watch Bingo of the AHL on the tube this year even if the NHL does comes back. It should be a very interesting year down there.

Here's the thing: None of us --not you, not me-- are gonna boycott sufficient games to register a blip on the NHL's radar. As Mr. Bettman has pointed out in an annoyingly upbeat way, there is no fear the "greatest fans in the world" won't come back after a lockout, no matter how long. Fair enough, I guess. Here's an idea though: kick 'em squarly in the RELATED revenues. Something that should be easy for all of us to do is take 1 year off of buying any NHL related swag. That is, I would suggest that if even ONE regular season game is missed, there be a conspiracy of NHL fandom everywhere to not buy a single sweater, t-shirt, cap, pj or car air deoderizer until after the END of the resumed season (whenever it is). Also, for visibility, for clarity of the statement, why not stop wearing swag (even if it's old) or team colours at games? Peer pressure is how this sort of thing is enforced... walking by a store at a game (or even in a mall) and see someone considering buying something an NHL team is selling, just say to this person that it is better for NHL hockey (i.e., the game... from a fan's perspective), to just save the extra money and not give the League or the PA anything extra to squabble over. Just an idea. If you want power, put your wallets away. Do it realistically.. . Watch hockey, sure, even pay for tickets, but just take a little of the topping off the pie they are fighting over. I bet it adds to a significant sum. Maybe enough to make them think twice before threatening another lockout.

You'll get your money back if the season is cancelled. Or if the season is shortened they will give you the option of refunding the lost games or applying it towards your next season or payment (depending on if you still have outstanding money to give them). But, I don't think cancelling is an option. And, I don't want to cancel mine, I love my Sens and we are lucky to have a NHL team in Ottawa. Us fans need to support the players and franchise no matter what. Don't be too negative.
