A little off topic, but ESPN classics Canada is replaying all the Team Canada hockey games from 1987. Last night they showed the first game Canada-Czech. I watched a bit and I'm still convinced there was and there will never be a better skater than Paul Coffey. He made it look so easy. For those who were not around in 1987 and even for us old guys who remember that series, do yourself a favor and catch some of the games. TSN will be showing all 3 games of the final starting September 11th.

The article on TSN that was posted around 12:20 this morning outlines some of the aspects of the NHL's proposal. I must say, based on the numbers reported it sounds very fair and at the very least a good starting point. I am way more optimistic. The two sides can't be that far off based on this deal. A six year deal would mean players share of revenues only dip under 50% once in this those six years, at 49.6%. But based on projections, cap would still be over 70Mill in the final year of the CBA despite it being a 50% share. Oh, and the reductions would not be a explicit roll back but the dip would be made up elsewhere so i don't think the players would feel it directly on their paychecks. Anyway, sorry, its on TSN. I'm just excited. GET IT DONE!

If there is a lockout we should demand that all agents be bought out so that players percentages of the salary are higher and that league(nhlpa) mediators are appointed to negotiate contracts.I'm not sure how we affect this type of change as fans but why should agents be driving our ticket prices up? Why do leagues even agree to negotiate with player representatives ?Bettman and Fehr may be necessary evils, but to hell with Stacey McAlpine and whoever else is talking in their ears... Not all hockey players are bright, get these people out of their heads. The PA should be looking out for their own. Really there should be heritage measures advanced here where the PA should be demanding more for the retired PA members more than the active members. I know it`s always a consideration(o r I assume it is) but the PA should be looking to buy up every team possible to increase their controlling interest in the league...Why wasn`t Orr just given a team...Who the hell is managing these guys...

I have no problem with the concept of luxury taxes.Bring them on.It's more important to consider where you apply them. As I have stated, I think it should be all about tv revenue sharing. You are selling a product called the NHL. Teams have the rights to their gates, the league is enabled by the nhlpa to sell those rights to the television stations(an unlikely concession by the owners I guess). But really the players, more than the owners, are subject to public scrutiny and interviews(whic h at one point the players were payed extra for interviews and it acted as an incentive...)So , my thought is this...the players right to their own image is their negotiating angle.Tv and media should be the topic. Hockey is the best sport to watch on tv. Media really should be the only (and completely separate) point of discussion during any cba revisions in my opinion.

Set it up such that the players get more of the tv revenues. The more ratings go up(the more lucrative the network/contrac ts are) the greater the percentage they earn.By having a secondary percentage the league and players can argue over,it makes it easier to micro tune the numbers . The players are motivated to put a better product on the ice each night to get a bigger piece of the bigger pie. No gate revenue sharing. If your market is not interested in hockey and will only pay you $25 with a hot dog and beer or some wonderful deal like that to attend your games so be it.However, you might not yet be a hockey market. While I APPRECIATE Gary Bettman's attempt to bring the greatest game to the most unlikely places imaginable(the desert). These projects should be given a 10 year lifespan and should be fostered by the league and the nhlpa and not used as a way to bring down average league earnings and therefore player salaries.

Ok pure ignorance here... but why can't there be a hard cap on team spending. With additional big market team profit sharing with small market teams and players?By that i mean players sign contracts for annual salaries but all players receive a percentage payout for games played or games called up as potentially injured players would still be eligible. This is not relative to star player status or pims or any other measure. if a player is called up from the minors he gets his salary plus bonus where the league minimum is from media profit sharing. The bonus is a variable based on league earnings. The fact that the players are assigned a hard cap on earnings is likely their biggest sticking point. Make the hard cap based on average gate revenue. This is a closed system you can only put so many butts in the seats every night. In order for that number to change you have to change the cost at the gate which means hurting the fans and potentially hurting corporate sponsorship for small market teams. Therefore the stars are paid more based on butts in seats(this should make the Kovalev's of hockey play harder).

Awesome article on Weircioch. http://senators.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=640621 Now weighs 210 at 6'4. He use to weigh at 190, got that throat injury and got set back to 185. Gained 25lbs over the summer with Schwartz and Turris. Maybe with the injury and one of his childhood friends playing in Ottawa will finally push Weircioch to the next level. The kid is still only 21, I remember 2 years ago when he played around 10 games with the sens and he looked pretty good, hes probably one of those unique players that do better in the NHL than AHL because its more structured and less hectic systems wise. Would be interesting to see him where hes at on training camp, if we do have one.

As of right now, we're about the future and a year of low-pressure development for Zbad, Silfverberg, Ceci et al could be a silver lining. Besides, the fact both sides (NHL, NHLPA) are ready to jeopardize another season to get their way gives me cause to resent both. No NHL? No problem. I'm more than happy to watch my Cornwall Jr. A Colts – good hockey, hungry players and rabid fans. What more could you want?

No dice. That split is too close to the players % last time where the big revenue teams helped inflate revenue to the point where the cap very quickly inflated out of control. 39M year one of last CBA to what would have been 72M next season. Last CBA the NHL was not counting on things spiraling out of control like it did... not even close. Sure it's only "Forbes" they don't have access to every price of data out there but I'm sure their data is pretty decent measuring stick. In the entire NHL last season only 8 teams made more than 3.2M in profit! Of those other 22 team 13 of them lost more than 5 million! If they resume business anything CLOSE to the old model, the league is in very very big trouble very very quickly. None more-so than the smaller markets including Ottawa. With this much revenue disparity between teams, even a luxury tax would do little except kill the parity we've built. The only way to fix this is either the player really do get a waaay smaller % as the league proposed (this will stall cap inflation and have it grow at a more normal rate) otherwise they need to screw revenue sharing altogether and set either a permanent hard cap + floor (I've proposed 40M/60M) or do that for year 1 with modest fixed % growth. The NHL almost HAS to do this, I don't see an alternative. I also don't expect the players to accept this lightly. That is why I feel we are done for this year (probably) and good chance we'll lose next year too (possibly). At a glance, Pittsburgh didn't even break even last year... even for teams like us where we made 2.8 million, do you really think it's worth it for owners to invest a million dollars a year in salary etc only to see profits of 2M or 3M or lose 5M?

NFL season man! Simple, no hockey, more time dedicated to watch my other fav sport (quickly becoming #1 fav sport with all these Hockey lockouts) GO JETS GO! You know what...I've tried in the past. NFL's "start play/stop play/watch player's scratch themselves for a while" and repeat every 20 seconds makes me feel like I'm watching baseball and puts me to sleep. I know I'm the minority as there are many more NFL fans than NHL fans...but I'll stick to hockey. It is truly the one and only sport that I love watching religiously. And what do you think hockey players do on the bench? spit, scratch, spit, yell for a towel, spit and clean visor, spit some more. EDIT oh I see what you mean, you mean actual gameplay where players huddle and all that. I see where 20 seconds could seem a bit long for a hockey fan. but you have to remember these guys dont glide on blades that dont require much friction, these guys run all game long in full gear in 30+ degrees. Not sure you follow NFL much cuz if you did you wouldnt say it puts you to sleep, every play is crucial, they dont play 82 games where you have a huge cushion to fail and still make the playoffs. You can lose 5 games in a row, no worries we got 70 more to go, etc... Thats what makes NFL that much more interesting, every play matters...Thats just me.

If Silfverberg is going to be successful in the NHL,, he is going to have to find other ways to score rather than relying only on his wicked wrister. In the SEL he had plenty of space to pull of his wristers, in the NHL he won't get that chance. In his highlight video, 95% of the goals he scored this year was all from his wrister. He is going to have to learn how to score some diry goals.

One thing about that article I definietely agree with is that although we do lack is a high number elite prospects. However we may have the most ready or on the verge of nhl ready prospects. I don't think many other teams can say they have 10 players who will be nhlers within 2 years. That's big Really the only way to have a lot of superstar prospects is to be shitty for many years in order to get a handful of top 5 picks. I think despite being shitty for only 1 year its extremely impressive to have so many players that are projected to be top 6 forwards or top 4 D. Never mind having a potential star goalie waiting for some action. Many people were against certain signings such as Regin, Latandresse and Lundin. I think those 1 year fillers were a must when you have so many prospects on the verge of needing nhl time. And to only pay around 1 mil for players that are more than capable of eating susbtantial minutes is very impressive on our gm's part. Hopefully the asking price for Ryan goes down eventually and we can aquire our much needed 1st line winger. After that I think were set until we see if Ceci and Cowen are capable of being Karlsson's partner. If not that piece, I believe will be the finishing touch to a very deep lineup. I really do believe we will have one of the best top 9 forwrads, top 4 D and goalie tandem.

LOL so little love for Zibanejad on this site... So far, I've seen 3 prospect lists from SCOUTS and all of them have Zibanejad first on their list and have him slated as a potential "average to very good" first liner... But I have not yet seen the EXPERTS on this site give him him the first slot, and have him as a bottom 6 forward as his upside. Hahaha I'm just glad Brian Murray's not part of this community and only take advice from his own scouts :)

I cant put lehner first only because i don't think he could currenty be a starting goalie, while the others could possibly play top 6 minutes, lehners time will come, but im perfectly happy having andy as our goto guy and he's a workhorse too. If we didn't have andy i would roll with lehner as our starter. I do think lehner should be our nhl backup and could learn lots from andy, more than what he could learn in the ahl. The ahl will provide him with playing time which is outweighing the decision from having him sit on the bench.

What are you basing these on? Skill, size, experience, toughness, durability, nhl readiness. My own ranking from watching them play. If stone's skating has improved further over the summer into training camp i would put him ahead of zibanejad. Agreed, if stone improved his skating a bit, then he is ahead of ZBad. I would put Lehner first though. Of all the payers there, he plays the most important position in hockey and is regarded as one of the best goaltending prospects in the league...Star written all over him...

I disagree with Noeson in the #7 spot for prospects. I would definitely put him above Da Costa and Prince. I guess it's based on how you weigh potential against current status. Thus, confusing me with Ceci at the #2 prospect spot. As per the CBA, I believe today will be the deciding day whether there will be a lockout or not. If they walk away with no progress - we're screwed. If they can hammer through some of the key elements, it shows some promise.

The clock is ticking !!!!!!!!!! With less than 3 weeks ( 18 days ), remaining to agree on a new CBA, today's meeting in New York, with the "Little Napoleon" and the "Fear Monger", should focus on Hockey Related Revenue, and end this posturing sideshow! There is an old saying " Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely" Since last lockout in 2004, revenues were $2.1 Billion, and have climbed more than 50% to $3.3 Billion. If the 2012-2013 season is lost, the parties will see the revenue drop by more than 50%. The NHL and NHLPA , must compromise soon to save hockey, and today August 28, is the day they need to fastrack a Reasonable and Fair CBA Agreement !! Sanity must win over greed !! GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
