There is no hypocrisy, the owners are using the tools given them and strengthening their teams. Teams are allowed to give lengthy contracts, teams are allowed to tender RFA offer sheets. As for Karma, I'm sure Prongzies is worried about that with his Hart Trophy, Stanley Cup and upcoming place in the Hockey Hall of Fame once he retires. Karma is for the weak-minded; prove it in a lab or it doesn't exist! T100%R OUT!

To me Nashville has 2 options: Trade him to Philly or Match the offer. They can not take those picks for him. My trade proposal would be this: TO Philly: Shea Weber To Nashville: 2013 1st, 2014 1st, Matt Read, Andrej Meszaros that is a deal both sides could live with I think. But Philly has the right not to exercise the trade option.

I feel for Nashville regardless how the contract negotiations went. Remember they lost Hamhuis to UFA then Suter, now Weber. That's like a kick in the teeth & forces the team to change their strategy. But Mr. Weber you are soon going to realize you no longer play in front of an elite goaltender like Rinne but a mediocre one like Bryzgalov. Until the Flyers fix that they won't be coming out of the East in any Cup run. Since Pronger is on LTIR it saves their butt with about a 5M cap room. I'm beginning to think the NHL owners are a bunch of hypocrites. Whining about the terms of these contracts being too long yet 2 of their own have signed these cap-circumventi ng contracts within the last 2 weeks, all during the negotiations. I'm sure there are some uneasy feelings between the GM's in the CBA negotiations. I think the owners have just lost the backing of the fans should this CBA discussions, for the 3rd time in a row, go to a work stoppage. They are forgetting the fans, without the fans there is no NHL. Nothing. They buy the tickets & the merchandise but if both sides (multi-billiona ires & multi-millionai res) can't seem to get past their greed & actually settle a contract without any loss of the season, I think this time they really lose fans that won't come back. They will lose a lot of what they grew in the US & will they now lose some of the Cdn fan base. Maybe some of those Cdn hockey fans look to the CHL for their hockey fix. Where the kids play hard & have fun for the love of the game & not the greed. There are also no work stoppages. Karma is a bitch Mr. Holmgren. It bit Pronger & it will bite you. Probably in 2 yrs when Giroux, Couturier & B Schenn are RFA's & will all want a big raise. I hope team and/or teams offer sheet the hell out of the 3 of them.. & put the screws to Philly for once... as Philly is only too happy to do it to other teams.

How long can they keep Pronger on LTIR rather than have him retire. I assume he would have to be checked by Doctors on a regular basis to ensure he is really injured. Since Pronger's contract was signed when he was over 35 -- if he retires the cap hit stays.. if they keep him for the next 4 yrs on LTIR the cap hit goes off. Would anyone think it was 'funny business' to keep a player over 35 yrs old on LTIR for 4 yrs?

I think we are pretty much in the position we were in this time last season but with a greater sense of optimism because of how we played last year. If we have a good season I see us at around 7 or 8 in the conference. If we have a bad year I see us at 12 or 13. A lot of things went better than we could have possibly hoped for last season -barely any injuries, Karlsson, Spezza, Michalek and the Bingo boys stepping up. We shouldn't be altogether surprised if there is a dip or two somewhere along the line. What i think MacLean has given us is a system that works for this team and a belief that the system works. I can see this team handling a little adversity next year and still being OK, but, as with many other teams, injuries to 1 or 2 key players could kill us. Don't forgot that while we played better than expected, a few teams under us in the standings, under performed. Teams like Buffalo, Washington and Montreal who had been projected to clinch spots from the get go but tanking early, opened the door for us. Remember, Washington pulled past us and Buffalo finally started to show its true colors late and made a push. If they'd started one week earlier I don't think we would have made 8th. Not a knock on Ottawa, just pure good luck on our part.

Probably have to at this point. But before the 7 days expire I'd work hard to try and get Philly to take back some or all of those picks for players off their roster. It's going to be tough enough to face their fans with Suter AND Weber gone without anything tangible to show for it. I don't think he'll take the picks. Watching TSN last night they talked about how he didn't match an offer for Scott Stevens, when he was GM for Washington. He later stated it was his biggest regret, as only one of the compensation picks (Gonchar) played in the NHL. Don't think he'll want to make the same move again... As for Weber wanting out of Nashville, I don't get it. They still have a good team. Was Suter that valuable to the team and their success? IMO their best player is Pekka Rinne. As long as they have hime playing the way he does, they'll be fine.

Isn't that kind of implied by him signing the offer sheet in the first place? He's basically saying he wants to accept that offer. Yes it definitely is but now that his agent came out and said his client doesn't want to be in Nashville and be part of another re-build it's just another reason Poile is forced to not matc the offer. Clearly your captain doesn't want to be there. If he somehow matches the offer it will end up pissing Webber off and creating a pretty ugly situation over there Agreed it makes it much clearer. He could have come out and said that he's open to Nashville matching and staying I guess. Sucks to be Nashville.

Agree, Briere's contract is pretty good in terms of real dollars. Don't think we'd hesitate if he were available but I doubt he is. While the Weber contract would put the Flyers tight to the cap, they would have significant LTIR room if Pronger is really done - and in any event they'd likely be more inclined to move one of their defencemen if Weber came in, having already added Schenn and subtracted JVR.

I am actually surprised St Louis ended up signing all their RFA's and on top of that brought back Langenbrunner. They are so deep it's not even funny. They finally started to perform the past couple years mostly because their stars are maturing and were actually healthy for once. If you look at their roster they have over 9 players that are legit top 6 forwards. I thought some of them would be gone simply because there isn't enough ice time to go around and keep everyone happy. Somehow their coaches and management are apparently keeping everyone happy. They still have more guys go re-sign next off season but it now looks like everyone will be staying. I find it to be a little strange but obviously a good situation for the franchise

We're chock full of rentals if we're true sellers at the deadline. Gonchar would be a wet dream of course, but Latendresse and Regin could have value if they are healthy at the deadline. So could Lundin and depending on what happens with Daugavins as well. Of course if any of those guys play well enough to figure into our future then we'd keep them (except Gonchar).

As for predictions...f rom the last post; I think Bryan Murray has build this years team in such a way that we will either competing for a playoff spot like last year or we will tank and finish in the bottom 10. Now some people think that's a terrible thing. I personally think it's a win win. Don't get me wrong I want to see us in the playoffs again however if there has ever been a year to have a top 10 pick it's this year. We could get a real stud if that would be the case. Another thing to think of is if we do end up tanking we have a few players that could be in high demand as rentals come trade deadline time. Mostly talking about Gonchar. He is a veteran powerplay specialist and those are extremely rare. I can easily see a team paying either a 1st or 2nd round pick for Gonchar and in that case we could put some very nice finishing touches in our re-build in terms of prospect depth. At that point we would be so deep in prospects that we could ACTUALLY start looking for superstars to add to our 1st line (aka Corey Perry)

Well that's depressing... (moment of silence) Based on Stone's/Silfver berg's/MZ's performances this spring, which has the best chance at making the big club? How much can [Stone's skating/Silfver berg's transition to the North American gameplay/MZ's size] improve over one summer? I'd assume Silfverberg has the best chance, but Stone looked better to me during his one-game stint... I think MZ will have a great season in Bingo, with a few call-ups (if he does go back to Sweden). Still, what are the odds that one of them can have a breakout season and fill the void in the top 6? Now, if we could swing some sort of threesome with Philly and Nashville and pick up Voracek... that would really round out our top 6 (in no particular order) RW - Voracek/Alfie/L atendressse/Nei l C - Spezza/Turris/S mith/JOB/Regin LW - Michalek/Silfve rberg/Greening/ Condra Plus - Daugs/Butler... What would we need to package to get Voracek - would MZ, a pick and a bottom 6 player do it?
