Don’t rule out the possibility of the Senators trading for Bobby Ryan. The Sens will have Jacob Silfverberg and Mark Stone battling for a roster spot. Even if Daniel Alfredsson decides to come back and possibly signing an extension, the Sens could still add some depth. Alexander Semin is the only legit scoring threat left on the UFA market. Sources are saying the Ducks still aren’t sure what they are going to do with Ryan. They may need a young dman to replace the lose of Justin Schultz. The Sens have a current cap hit of $47 million, so taking on Ryan’s $5.1 million salary isn’t a problem. Sources are saying that the Flyers, Maple Leafs, Penguins, Red Wings, Lightning and Senators will make a run at Ryan. The Ducks may have to move some salary to re- sign Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, who’ll be UFAs after next season.

I could be wrong but I don't think anyone can talk extension until the final year of the contract. So we'd have to settle for Murray feeling confident he can extend him when the time comes but no guarantees. You're right about the top 6 though but it wouldn't be so bad to have 7 guys that could be top 6. What with injuries etc and as much as we all have faith in the guys you listed there's always a chance someone doesn't pan out completely. But yeah if we're allowed to dream a little, a top 6 like this for the next 5 years would be pretty sweet: Michalek-Spezza -Ryan Silfverberg-Tur ris-Noesen But if we give up both Zibanejad and Stone to get Ryan then the drop off might be pretty steep to the third line.

My only concern with Ryan is the contract expiring...I think for it to be Stone, moreso Noesen, as I still am not totally on the Stone train we would have to have a fairly decent extension lined up for Ryan. You have to remember that if we end up with Ryan locked up long term that is another top 6 spot gone...so we have Ryan Spezza Silfverburg Turris Michalek All longish term...so there is really only one other top 6 place for any of our highly touted forward prospects. A move will happen at some point.

Hmm, I thought he wanted more like 4 mil...3 is a lot more reasonable. Yeah I almost wish we'd kept him now as that could turn out to be a very reasonable deal. I guess we still need Methot more though. As for adding Stone or Noesen to the Ryan deal, no way would I give up one of those guys plus Zibanejad. Those three guys (plus Silfverberg) are way more valuable than any of our other prospects up front, so I wouldn't give up two of them. If the Ducks would take Zibanejad, Puempel and our 1st next year (or something similar) then we're talking. For anyone that reads this site regularly or follows Chirp on twitter - we already know Alfie's decision and Chirp is keeping a lid on it.

Things I hate: 1. People commenting on pretending to know what it will take for Alfie to retire. Only Alfie knows. The only FACTUAL statement we heard was that Alfie was going to work out a bit before making his decision. 2. People that are overly optimistic that we will be a better team next year. Don't get me wrong, I'm optimistic too, but in reality, we are looking at a lot of rookies possibly playing on our team. If you thought last year was streaky, just wait until this year. I do think we have some top-notch talent, but it doesn't guarantee us wins. Edmonton is a great example of this. 3. People assuming a Ryan trade is in the works at this point. Garrioch's article was very different than the implication of the headline. There isn't one "insider" that has led us to believe that a trade is in the works. Same goes with E. Kane.

Hax, I would be MORE than happy to offer the same or even slightly more than we did for Nash. Zibby(they want a 2nd center...judgin g by the prospects game he may be ready...not necassarily as high end now as they would ideally want but a good young piece) One of Stone/Noesen/Pu empel(another good young piece that doesn't cost much, as I seem to recall reading somewhere they weren't looking for much salary back) 2013 1st round pick(yeah yeah strong draft....blah blah blah...I will take an established star for an unknown) Then maybe if they want something else do one of our 3/4th liner overabundance like Dacosta/Butler/ Condra Not sure it would be enough and I seriously doubt they move him before Nash as he will set the value...unless we blow them away(and that offer is comparable to what was rumored to be the front runner on Nash)....If they wanted a goalie which I am not sure if they would or not you could work something for Bishop/Lehner, although this drastically increases the value from our side IMHO. But Ryan is exactly the top 3 type of player we need....him or E Kane. Murray/Melnyk/e verything rumor wise has been far too quiet lately, leads me to believe that they may actually be getting serious though and it is being kept under wraps to try and pull something off before Nash expands his list.

The last few days have been pretty hectic here, in fact, it's been an absolute flurry of activity since July 1. I love it. The future is as bright as it's ever been for our Sens, let's enjoy it. The negativity here is the exact same rhetoric we heard all of last year. We got a great team here, and it looks like it's set to keep getting better and better. Enjoy the ride, guys. This team is gonna be competitive for years and years to come. A minor tweak here and there isn't gonna change much. Obviously a huge move makes a huge difference but we're in a position where we have the luxury of being patient. Can't wait to see what happens to the Sens in the next 5 years.

Nope. Unless you count the coy way he played dumb about Ryan when asked. But really I wouldn't read anything into that. He'd be smart to keep it quiet unless it somehow helped his case. I think it was good for him to let it be known that we were looking at Nash since it put some pressure on CBJ to try and get Ottawa on Nash's list. But with Ryan there's really no need to go public - it would just get fans excited and possibly drag current Senators into rumors as going the other way.

I don't really think that Alfie is taking any new players into consideration. It would impact his decision a little bit if we added some big piece or if Murray made some stupid trade - but I doubt he was waiting to see how the team looked. The reason I doubt it is mostly because he himself said he needed to see if he still had enough "fire" to put in the off-season training. Now, it's a little easier to find that fire if you're picturing Nash or Suter on your team of course. As for RUSHRLZ - I actually agree that if Alfie does retire this year that it's probably the best thing long-term for the team. It's hard to think or type that because the "fan" in me wants Alfie to play forever, but practically speaking this team needs to find it's post-Alfie identity and the sooner we start doing that the sooner we find it. Now, since I'm much more "fan" than practical, I'm going to force myself to watch Leaf promotional videos as punishment for typing that last paragraph.

My two cents. I agree with many of the posters - let the young guys play. And I'm totally with the owner ( a great owner) that playing in Ott is a privilege. The Nash nonsense immediately brought to mind Heatley and I would hate to bring a player to Ott that doesn't want to be here. I couldn't agree more with Mr Melnyk. Also, the Murray brothers are some of the best in the business and have done the right things this summer. If it weren't for the fantastic weather I'd say bring on the Fall but when it comes I'm looking FW to our chances. From my phone - sorry for any typos.

I hate that we're back to being a budget team! I sure hope the new CBA does more to even out the playing field again, the last 2 jumps in the celing have really created the have and have nots again. Agreed.. the salary cap was brought in to control player salaries and bring parity into the NHL. It did that for most of the CBA.. but with the cap so high now.. it's back to rich teams and the rest. So eventually parity will be gone if the cap keeps going up. The players are only taking what is offered to them.. you can't blame them. Some of these owners have to be protected from themselves. Im thinking the only way to solve this would be to have player salaries fluctuate with cap. If a player signs at 5 mil and the cap increases 10% so does every player under contracts salary. Thats how you ACTUALLY tie revenues to salaries

agreed, people know ive posted on here about silfverberg almost every single damn day this past season, so im sure you know how psyched about him (even had to stop my self a couple of times from buying his jersey too early). Cowen i really believe will be the biggest reason (behind karlsson and spezz' performance) that will dictate how our season will be. If cowen cant avoid the infamous "sophmore slump" *knocks on wood*, then our D is going to struggle big time. the player i anticipate the most will be kyle turris. He is turning 23, they year most 1st rounders breakout in this league. im sure he will be riding off the momentum from his excellent PO finish. Oh shit forgot about Kyle Turris. Put him second right after Jakob lol Kyle Turris is sick :)

I still hope to see Cowen get more confidence in his offence. He did get 18goals in junior. That doesnt happen very often. Tyler Myers is more known for his offencive abilities and his best year in Junior was 9goals. (similar to ryan murray who is an offencive Dman compared to the previous 2) Ive heard it many times from media that in practice, cowen uses his slap shot and its deadly and accurate. I know part of the reason he didnt use it in regular games is because he didnt have the confidence to do so. Im sure anyone that has played sports would understand that a slap shot takes a lot of time and space to do, and if your confidence is low, you will likely just pass it off or just quickly snap it. Another future point man will be cody ceci. He will also have a right handed shot to take one timers from karlsson. Although ceci is IMO a couple years away from being a regular here. Buffalo scouts said when they invited ceci down to buffalo pre-draft, they tested his shot and it clicked in at 96 mph. thats incredible for a growing 18year old, will probably pass 100 in a couple years when he is fully grown. Apart from Jakob Silfverberg, Jared Cowen is my most anticipated player to watch next season. In his rookie year he always had good intentions, but as you said lacked confidence. This is normal. I'm sure he'll look more comfortable in his second year and start to develop into the player that he's supposed to be. I'm also glad Kuba's finally gone man Marc Methot is going to help us so much more

Um, yeah. The "reason" he's taking this long is that he's said from day 1 that he would decide after spending some time doing hard, off-season training and deciding if his body is up for it and if he still had the fire to work that hard. He had to stop training when he was under the weather or else he might have decided sooner. I'm not saying he's not considering retiring, but the fact is that he's considered it, decided to return and will go public when the time is right. I agree a considerable amount with DASA - I'm sure the quality of team we ice this season factors into things at least a bit for Alfie. I'll also stand by my sure to be unpopular opinion, if we aren't looking like we have a whiff of a chance at contending this year, then perhaps it is the best that DA11 hangs/em up after a strong season like last year.

Watching a couple games from this past season on Youtube [yes, you can do that!] because well, it's the off season and I love this team [and I'm bored] and I keep noticing a detrimental tendency with the team, and that was the lack of a true PP pointman. This season is going to gear more on Karl with the subtraction of Kuba, and It would be nice if the team could really get another stud, maybe top 2 defenceman that can work the point on the powerplay. In our games this past season, we had Karl and Kuba on one pairing during the PP, and then Cowen and Gonchar, with Big Rig midway thru the season sliding in for Cowen. Cowen and Phillips are not powerplay pointmen. And Gonchar really wasn't much of a factor on it this past season as well. Just a thought. I still endorse the fact that this team truly needs another top 4 D over a top 6 W. Hopefully something like this can come through trade, but I doubt it's going to happen. If not, maybe Paul will use Alfie as a point. Hopefully it can improve because as well all know our powerplay last season was absolutely putrid. I also thought the Cowen-Gonchar d pairing in general was vey bad; but that partly had to do with Cowen being a rookie.

Time to let some of the young guys prove if they can make it or not. I would not be surprised that we take a step back next season while the young guys take on bigger responsibilitie s. Before we start giving away our prospects let's see what they can do. Remember we were all told it will be a three year process and the fan base was squarely behind Murray. Let's look at the big picture and not just focus on next season. Hate to say it but it is a process. It looks like the Murrays know what they are doing.

Now not saying he will be a Stamkos but having a good hard accurate shot.. we never know what will happen. More of these Sens have to learn to hit the net... how many times did they shoot wide. And to Jason.. please shoot the puck.. you have such a great underrated shot.

I am all for signing a big name top scorer this year, Silverburg Stone and whoever can alternate lines, whats wrong with having three solid lines. Look at LA and others. We have a ton of third liners and prospects, I would love to trade some of them for a top winger to play with Spezza. Let Silverburg and Stone work into the NHL and develop, we can always trade Michalek if we have too many good players (like thats a problem) We need to move some bodies as well. If we go as is we will do fine and make playoffs again most likely but will not go far again. Go with top 6 talent and if Silverburg and others work out to be superstars also Yeee Haaaw lets not forget injuries can happen so being deep in top talent is not a bad thing.

Agreed that our biggest need is a top 2 D-man. Methot is a good acquisition but really would be better on our second pairing IMO. And any deal that sees us give up any of our future top D (Karlsson, Cowen or Ceci) or future top forwards (Spezza, Turris, MM9, Silfverberg, Stone, Noesen, Zibanejad) just creates another hole to fill. Now considering our future looks brighter up front then I'd be okay with one of those forwards going one way if a legit top 2 D came back (i.e. a guy who's going to be around for a long time), but even then there aren't many options out there.

Dream scenario we do a sane deal for Ryan then do a sign and trade for Weber in six months. A- top 6 with the deepest bottom six in the league plus two Norris finalists and an ass load of exuberant youth patrolling the blue line. I see this as the best possible blue sky dream scenario for the season and with Alfie back of course. I can't see Poile risking losing Weber for nothing and we sure as f**k have the prospect depth to help him get back on track.

Still believe the Sens' biggest need, as much as we would all love to see a top 6 winger, is another stud defenceman. Would give my left nut to have Bobby Ryan, but Bob Murray is looking for a return that will at least include a second line centre and a good young defenceman. So you're talking along the lines of a Kyle Turris and a Cowen. No way. Was thinking that maybe a Da Costa and a Borowiecki would suffice, but definitely not. Basically the Sens would take a huge hit to get one in a trade. Not worth it imo

Maybe my brain is just bewildered that more than one person would be convinced/worri ed/upset about Melnyk's financial commitment to our team. I am convinced it is more about smart spending, and timing to him. I just wish he'd keep his mouth shut more often.

And you guys, or you and your two login names have nothing to suggest that we are a budget team. When it makes sense our owner will spend the money... to the cap. And of course more spend influences % to make playoffs which influences likelihood of playoff revenue. Every piece of the puzzle has economic ramifications and sometimes it takes money to make money. You know what man, stop being a childish prick. Just because I support another person's view on here, that has been publicly stated by management many times, and goes against your opinion, there's no need to turn to these types of responses. I own up to my opinion every time, no need to hide under multiple logins. So grow up!

Just to add a little more on the buyout Alfie suggestions: I think the last time he resigned it was not after a buyout by the Sens but after the Sens declined a team option. I really don't know if the Sens can buy and resign him, but I'm pretty sure that's not what theydid the last time.

@RUSHRLZ Ottawa Citizen : In a year-end conference call with the Ottawa media on Monday, Melnyk said the Senators can't go "toe-to-toe" in spending with the big-market teams, suggesting that players, and in particular Karlsson, will have to take a haircut to play in Ottawa. "From our perspective everyone has to be reasonable," said Melnyk. "All we can offer is opportunity, and that is to be part of a great organization with a shot. "If you want to be part of that, our doors are open. "We can pay you, but it has to be within a reasonable budget." Another indication that the team is going to watch its bottom line carefully came when Melnyk was asked if he was prepared to increase his spending to bring in some free agents. He said that with the "way things work out" - translated, that means with lower rookie salaries coming in, and some bigger salaries, like Filip Kuba's $3.7 million, likely heading out - the team won't have to spend much more than it did this year. "(Murray) knows what we need to work and within what numbers we need to work and I think we can still get to a point where we fulfil those needs without breaking our bank," said Melnyk. The team ended the season spending $51.653 million, $12,648 under the $64.3 million salary cap.

Nash vs budget team Look at the pieces, we were sending them at least Zibanejad, Bishop and Foligno (who was looking for market value at about 4mil per season). The total of all those players would be similar (couple million away) to having just added Nash. I don't think anyone can say because we wanted Nash we are not a budget team. They wanted to add Nash within their budget. Obviously with a Nash on the team they can assume 1st round playoff revenue as well as a few more ticket sales, which would then increase their budget for the year by that couple million difference mentioned above.
