That's a great idea Hax! If Ceci fell to 11th , I'd definitely hope BM does this. yeah, the Caps have the 11th (was the Avalanche's) and the 16th. So that could be tempting for sure. Also, the Lightning have the 10th as well as the 21st (was the Red Wings). We could try for the 10th, they'd probably ask way too much but BM has a good relationship with Yzerman. Or the option of a later pick to 21st (for those who mentioned it) if we gave up 15th. Maybe we could get Lee back, lol. And lets not forget the Sabres, they have the 12th and also the 23rd from the Preds. So BM has a few options regardless of what direction he wants to go. As for Columbus, we know the 2nd pick isn't going anywhere, but they also have the 17th from LA. But our positions are so close it wouldn't really do much.

I'm hoping we give Borocop and Gyrba the opportunity to platoon as our #6 defenceman. It's time to use Philips to mentor our young guys, and give them a crack in the big league. Exactly. These guys have paid their dues. We don't NEED to draft a D man with 15th overall. IMO that pick is an asset that can be used to lure a young dynamic player like PRV. Borocop was an All-Star AHL'er last year on a so-so AHL team and won rookie of the year on the team. He can obviously play 5th or 6th for us next year. For Gryba, it's now or never. He's 24 (I think). If he doesn't make it this year, he'll never make it.

perfectly said. im just trying to think of the top of my head of young (25 and under) Dmen that we could try for. specifically ones that seem possible to trade for. justin schultz of anaheim (i think they still own him atleast?), i think he will be a UFA. if anyone has more info on him, please share. as sandy has said on here several times, bogosian (only if at the right price) z.michalek(stil l on a 4mill contract for 3 more years), bryan allen(UFA), matt carle(UFA), suter(UFA) are expeienced guys that seem interesting but id assume most if not all return to their team. and since this years market is so thin, i expect guys like matt carle to get payed close to if not north of 5mill. and some have suggest keith ballard and i know the guy had a horrible season but since vancouver are looking to get rid of him as a salary dump. if they give back a 2nd rounder or something high. they dont have any prospect worth taking (other than kassian and jensen who are forwards in this case) whats going on with tim erixon? i just know he played the year in rangers AHL team. i dont blame them, they have a pretty deep team.

I'm not at all opposed to trading our pick for an already drafted player/prospect , so long as it is not a forward like Paajarvi. We have no room, and ultimately, no need for another forward prospect. What this team is starved for, is organizational depth on the blueline. With the trade of Rundblad, we now have a hole when it comes to blue-chip D prospects. Whether it's through the draft, or through trade, I'm strongly convinced that the Sens will come out with a good young defenceman at the end of June. But c'mon. We do not need anymore forwards. We have so many that there aren't even room enough for them.

first of all, we have no need or room for magnus. 2nd, you are comparing a former top 10 pick FORWARD to a future Dman that looks like he will get picked late in the 1st round. how do you compare a Dman and a forward? esepcailly at such a young age. my brain must be worse than mush if that idea just came to me... and the turris for rundblad thing made no sense. we didnt trade a pick (ignore the 2nd round pick we threw in there), we traded young talent for young talent.

Spme people get all bent out of sorts - stop reading your Ottawa Sun - you acquire talent and i'm sorry watching the Memorial Cup - if you prefer Maata to Magnus Paarjvi your brain is mush. You can always evaluate your young forwards and then trade them for NHL ready or near ready D-men from other oganizations. C'mon! There's no Rush. If you have 4 out of 8 of your forward group thet you judge can't miss you can move the others or just sign free-agent D-men. Last time I checked we should be good against the Cap. I guess trading your pick is a no-no. I guess we can talk to Turris about that (thank you MR Rundblad).

Hell no. We have no need for another forward. We have blue-chip forward prospects in spades. Stone, Puempel, Zibanejad, Silfverberg, Prince, Neosen, Petersen, the list goes on and on. We need a defenceman. Amazing how some people still don't see that. Yes, I agree with you. I actually think we need to convert some of our assets from our deep forward pool (NHL'ers and prospects) into defensive players. We should pick a D player with that pick or even move up by packaging that pick along with another asset to move into the top 8-11 picks. Also, if we can acquire another 1st or an early 2nd rounder we can draft a goalie if either Subban or Vaseleski are still available. I agree. The focal point of this draft should be to number one, improve the defence, and number two, help the goaltending; you can never have enough good goalie prospects. I think if the Sens stay at 15, we are going to get a solid defenceman anyways because of how unusually rich this year's draft is for blueliners. Whether it's Maata, Reinhart, Keokkeokk, of Finn, we should all get excited. At some point in the draft I would like to see the Sens draft a goalie, too. Whenever a team has to make tough decisions in net because of how good their goaltending depth is, it's usually a good thing. There are a core group of prospects that I wouldn't like to see the Sens move however, and stay patient with. Mika, Stone, Neosen, Silfverberg, and Puempel shouldn't be moved imo. All their upsides are too high and we should take out time and cultivate them properly.

The only point I'd make, is we need a dman now or next year, drafting one this year probably won't be ready for 3-4yrs unless we get really lucky or move up. So trading the pick for an asset we could then trade other assets for a dman. I don't think it matters. The D cupboard is almost dry and we still need to draft one. If the organization was bent on meeting every immediate positional need, we wouldn't draft any players. That's the point of the draft. This is a rebuild. I will be shocked if the Sens don't draft a defenceman at the draft this year. It's pretty consensus that it is.

See I don't think Murray wanted Kadri. I think his top guys at that point we're Cowen and Magnus Paarjvi who went 10th to Edmonton right after. I love Cowen and I'm glad we picked him but I wouldn't have minded one bit taking MPS. I'm still hoping Murray pulls somekind of deal for MPS like he did for Runblad/Turris. I'd be OK with trading our 15th overall to Edmonton for Paarjvi. LW that can be inserted right away to play with Spezza and Michalek...WOW super speed wingers. Alright I'm waking up now. i love PRV's skill and especially his 2way game and would fit perfect here but if he cant even produce on the highly skilled oilers. why would you expect way more here. he didnt even perform that well in the AHL. I understnad it was just probably a sophmore slump and he will be back, but till that happens, he doesnt deserve that much praise yet. paajrvi remins me of our own former magnus, arvedson of course . excellent defensivly, but cant seem to be that consistant top 6 scorer. He had 25 points or so in 30 games or so in the AHL. I wouldn't say didn't produce there but I am more inclined to think that they have mismanaged him (like Phoenix with Turris). He doesn't fit in Edmonton and he was never really given a chance to succeed because of their depth at forward which will now get even deeper with Yakupov (can't beleive they pick 1st again...what a joke) They could sure use that 15th pick for a D man. Arvedson was a solid 2 way guy but MPS has that special speed that freezes defenseman making them back up and giving room to the other forwards. To me MPS is another Turris type that just needs a chance to play. Oilers put him on third line. Guy is only 21 yrs old. Perfect fit for Ottawa and would be ahead of any kid we draft at 15th.

It's pretty easy to see. Kadri was a shock pick to just about everyone so the chances that Murray was A) interested in Kadri with the very next pick and B) worried that he'd have to trade up a spot to get him are pretty much zero. I seriously doubt Murray wanted Kadri but if he did he couldn't have expected the Leafs to be targeting him. And as has been stated over and over and over: if Murray actualy did want Kadri, Burke did us a HUGE favor by "stealing" him. See I don't think Murray wanted Kadri.
Interesting looking back to last year's draft we basically traded (had we chosen those guys), T. Jurco(skilled forward) and X. Ouellet(puck moving D) for M. Puempel(scorer) . What a draft, I still can't believe it. Then Prince, then Pageau, then Cleasson to round it off. I think this will end up being one of the best drafts for any team in history. Really excited about this year's rookie camp. Too bad the rookie tournament is no longer in Hull. This year's team will be sick !!

Yes I'm Ben Kerr who is writing the draft articles at Last Word, and I'm one of the admins of the site. We have a good stable of writers, and I'm assembling notes from 5 other guys on our draft profiles, its not just me putting them out there. One of our guys is a Sens fan, but its not me... I must confess to being a Habs fan. I'm here because I saw that this site was giving referrals to the site. Ie there were a number of clicks to the site from here, so when I see a blogger or commenter has linked us, I always like to say thanks.

If it is the knee that will certainly fuel trade rumors. He's a great player when healthy but do we really want another injury season? If alfie retires there will be a huge hole up front and let's be honest we can't count on silfverberg to produce 40-50 points in his 1st season. We either keep michalek even if he keeps getting injured and bring in a top 6 guy, or trade him as his value is at the highest it will most likely ever be? I just wonder what you could get for him as scoring 35 goals should get you a real solid player

Can Olli Jokinen play wing? He probably would not like that very much but he is a shooter who is coming back into his own. A big guy who can skate really well. Would look awful dangerous with spezza and in front of the net on the PP. Personally I think that Nash is the guy to go for (Praise is staying a devil) Nash can be had Foligno, Bishop, 1st, butler and/or peumpel for Nash and 2nd (31) Peumpel will most likely be good but we have zibby, silfverberg, stone, neoson etc... To get a proven scorer its worth it in my opinion. Or something like that... No body has any idea what columbus wants but that seems pretty fair to me if not an over payment...

i hope the organisation has the will to follow through on the rebuild even if it means little improvement next season or even a small regression. The trouble is a lot of fans don't do well with patience. Remember the poor run in the last 5 games of the regular season. One guy comes on here screaming about how crap we are and if that's how we are going to play in the playoffs we'll get swept and if that's the case then we shouldn't even make the playoffs.... You can see how some of the GMs with less fortitude can fold to that sort of agressive fanbase and play it safe - which is keeping Kuba or Lee. The point is there are plenty of idiots on here (as there are in every fanbase) and I just hope that Zbad, Silfverberg and the young blueliners get cut some slack if they don't set the world alight next season and if we don't improve or, God forbid, don't make the playoffs we can keep the trade Spezza, fire Murray, fire MacLean morons off the boards most of the season.

i understand that you REALLY keep pushing for bogosian. happy or not, the guy's value keeps increasing year by year. he is a pretty big 6'3 215lbs. his stats are pretty consistantly increasing year to year. he is also just a 21 year old dman that was drafted top3, which likely means he is just starting to break out now. turris, who was in a similar spot, costed us at the time. our top D prospect and a 2nd rounder. i think bogosian will cost us a 1st rounder + a pretty good prospect (noesen or peumpel) i hate the thought of that and in no way do i hope that trade happens unless BM finds a way to keep our prospects and maybe put in a name like foligno or something. its how trades work, if you want something you really like (esepcailly high end talent), you have to give up something you like just as much. a way to see if a trade is fair is to look at it from Winnipeg's perspective. I realize it would cost a lot to get him... but he is apparently unhappy in Winnipeg. That's why I bring it up... But then.. there could be a bidding war for him if he became available. I would give up Foligno + the 15th overall.. but that may not be enough...

Forget Bogosian he's a bust. I thought we were all for rebuilding with our prospects? At 15th, Murray I'm sure will do this best to move up, say 2 or even 3 spots up and if you add Butler. The 12 man offensive lines are getting way to crowded and we can do without Butler's services at this point. Ceci or Koekkoek will do the job. I now Murray, aside from drafting Swedes, is an avid fan of the CHL, OHL'ers in particular and really, most of the best players have usually been drafted there. Just look at the last 2 he drafted back in 2003 in the 1st round (Getzlaf - WHL; 15th & Perry - OHL; 28th).

i understand that you REALLY keep pushing for bogosian. happy or not, the guy's value keeps increasing year by year. he is a pretty big 6'3 215lbs. his stats are pretty consistantly increasing year to year. he is also just a 21 year old dman that was drafted top3, which likely means he is just starting to break out now. turris, who was in a similar spot, costed us at the time. our top D prospect and a 2nd rounder. i think bogosian will cost us a 1st rounder + a pretty good prospect (noesen or peumpel) i hate the thought of that and in no way do i hope that trade happens unless BM finds a way to keep our prospects and maybe put in a name like foligno or something. its how trades work, if you want something you really like (esepcailly high end talent), you have to give up something you like just as much. a way to see if a trade is fair is to look at it from Winnipeg's perspective.

Suter would be great... but 29 other teams that's not including Nashville will be after him. I assume he would choose a contender -- so that let's out quite a few teams... Ottawa would certainly be better with him as they have the goaltending for the first time in like forever and they have the forwards. They are overall a young team and on the rise.. Detroit would be the lead team to get him.. but they are getting older with not a lot of really good young prospects to step in. If there is a buyout in the CBA does Philly buyout Bryzgalov and go for Suter as well? So if you were Suter... where would you go? If not Suter... I would visit Winnipeg to try to get Bogosian who is reportedly uphappy there..

It'll take close to five years to groom a defenseman from this draft. With Weircoich, Gryba, and Boerswicki currently in our system, we really don't have any top end potential on the blueline. With simple linear 3rd grade logic, one can see we have a plethora of forward prospects that are on the verge of cracking the roster; therefore paying big dollars on a forward UFA wouldn't make much sense. The hole is on defense, why not go after someone who can fill that void and then some? Obviously I am talking about Ryan Suter, also include in that list of pro's that Suter will be in his prime for the next ten years plus. I digress though, because Murray won't have the testicular fortitude to pony up the lengthy costly contract. Unfortunately Suter will probably end up in Detroit (to replace Lidstrom) with a low ball salary. On forwards though, if we did want a young(ish)playe r who (may) not cost a king's ransom, how about Camalleri? Our odds would even be better if Calgary blows their team up and goes with a grass roots rebuild. He would be great on Spezza's wing, a guy who can effectively shoot AND pass, unlike Michalek.

Im not sure why you guys think Murray tricked Burke. I totally believe Murray wanted Kadri because he was the best player available...it turns out now thats not the case, but honestly - he wanted Kadri. At the time they wanted a forward and given that spot, Kadri was the best player available...I think he saw that Burke was for sure taking Kadri and knew he wasn't trading....he basically said "we'll flip you" Burke denied it. Hey, it worked out great, but I don't think that was Murrays intention at the time, even though he is a great drafter...

To be honest, I'd like to see us keep the 15th overall and pick (in my preference order) either Koekkoek (however you spell it), Matt Finn or Olli Maatta. 1. Keokkeok (#$%^#$) plays like Ryan Suter. Why try to sign Suter when we can draft the next Suter. 2. Matt Finn reminds me of Drew Doughty, to a lesser extent 3. O. Maatta reminds me of K. Timonen. Could be paired with Cowen and form our new generation of shut down pairing. His foot speed is great. Definitely a usable asset. Any of these 3 at 15th makes me a very happy Sens fan. With that being said if Washington calls us and says our 11th for 15th and Bobby Butler and Ceci is still available... then you gotta do what you gotta do.

I think the SENS should trade down 4-5 spots and get a second pick to go with it. And god forbid using Zibby as someone suggested to move up. Zibby is going to be the power forward we always wished for. He's a big bruiser with tons of skill. Lets let him develop. If there's a real need to do something I suggest we try and turn Bishop into another first pick. That would be my suggestion. Then we could grab a D-man and a forward. I think Galchenyuk would be nice if he drops to 15th.

there are a fair amount of parallels between the BSens from last year and the Marlies this. they have a good mix of prospects, career AHLers and they have a couple of signings fuck-ups that have plenty of NHL experience like Finger and Orr. If they win it will mean for the leafs organisation more or less what the calder win meant for the senators except they don`t have the dedicated fanbase to get all excited for. It will be funny watching the leaf fans claim how important winning the calder cup is just a year after convincing themselves it means nothing at all. the fact is the experience our younger players got has been cited by management, players and fans as a significant factor in the performance of those players this year, For us to try and convince people of anything else just because the marlies might win it this year would be stupid. The major difference is I`m not sure how many of those that might win the cup will be regulars next year. We had Smith, Cowen, Greening, Dauavins and Condra in more or less from the start and O`Brien added at the end of the season. I doubt that will happen next year for Toronto.

The Leafs aren't exactly developing Luke Schenn properly either. They rush him in... but he was good in the 1st year. But there is so much pressure put on him... he is suffering for that now. Put him anywhere else... where he is 'sheltered' around decent defensemen... he will probably turn into a pretty good D. Looks like the Marlies could be on their way to the Calder Cup Final. They are in the semi-finals now.. just one game in though... but won that 5-0. Don't know exactly who is on their team other than the ones we see once in a while on the big club... but they seem to be getting it done. Now I hope they don't....

I agree with the earlier comment that Burke's ego is his greatest weakness - i'm also prepared to admit that I do like the fact that he has the balls to make big deals which is something Murray was either unwilling to or wasn't allowed to do until the rebuild was acknowledged. I also think Kadri will end up being a very good player but he was unfortunate to be picked up by an organisation that has been rudderless for most of his career. I know sens fans complain about the way Filatov/Lee etc were treated but if you want to see how an organisation can truly fuck up a prospect look no further than the leafs and Kadri.

I`m prepared to live with red numbers for this one - but this insistence that Murray somehow fleeced Burke as part of a GM masterstroke makes us sound as delusional as the fans from a team that play in blue and white. You're totally right. He only "fleeced" Burke in the same way you could claim to have "fleeced" someone if they drop a $20 bill and you happen to pick it up. And then you tap them on the shoulder to say "Hey you dro..." and they cut you off and say "I don't want to talk to you". So you just think "Okay whatever jackass" and pocket the 20. Murray was being a bit too friendly by wanting to just spit out his offer with no BS but Burke was so full of himself that he wanted to see Murray's sad eyes when Burke told him he was picking Murray's guy. It's sweeter of course if we had no intent of picking Kadri and Murray was about to "pay" for Cowen when he didn't have to, but then again if we were about to pick Kadri it's kinda nice that Burke saved us the regret. Imagine if someone had somehow "swindled" us out of picking Daigle or if someone had "tricked" Muckler into picking Staal instead of Lee.

The silliest part of the Toronto media spin on that is that Burke was about to pick - there's nothing Murray could have done to get Kadri if he had wanted him (which we'll never know for sure but it seems unlikely). And as I've stated, even if Murray DID want Kadri, Burke did us a favor by "forcing" us to "settle" for Cowen. LOL And yeah, anyone who really thinks Murray actually pulled one over on Burke is going way too far. All Murray might have done is think quick on his feet and let Burke believe he was taking "our guy". If Murray had tipped his hand Burke might have said "Hmm, Cowen eh? Yeah maybe we'll take him instead ... unless you want to finish your earlier sentence." Face it leaf fans: Burke picked the wrong guy and missed a chance to get a little something out of Murray in the process.

However, I've always stated since that draft that Murray was always targeting Cowen. Murray has made several comments over the years to back that up including that he was building from the back end out, that Cowen only slipped because of his injury, and that Cowen really should have been drafted in one of the top positions.
im in for trading down. we may even get back a 2nd round pick from that. if we do trade down, the guys we should expect to get ludvig bystrom, slater koekkeok or olli maatta. maatta is a real interesting one in this group, he jumped up to the 1st round out of no where. he is good sized (6'2 200+lbs) kid, 2way but more defensive. very high IQ. and would be a nice change. a finnish Dman. he made the hop across the pond this past year to play in the OHL for the london knights. koekkoek is as don cherry would put it "a good canadian boy!" just an extremly hard working tough shutdown Dmain that has a great slapshot and good passing. and is similar size to maatta bystrom, smaller of the 2. is a 17year old playing in the SEL mens league as a Dman already! he also is just like the other 2 but doesnt have much of the offencive touch, just seems to be a good depth guy.

But that's just it. Burke's blunder was tipping his hand. I don't think Murray tricked him into doing so, he just walked up and (in fact) was about to make an offer of some sort. I don't think Murray is sneaky enough to have just been acting like he was going to make an offer. Burke blurted out that he was taking Kadri when there was no reason for him to do so - he had the next pick and held all the cards. He should have heard Murray out. And even if Kadri had been everything Burke apparently thought he was, Burke still missed the chance to let Murray make his offer. What if Murray was going to say "we'll offer you our 2nd round pick if we can move up and grab Cowen"? Burke could have accepted and still gotten Kadri. And if Murray had offered something with the intent of picking Kadri himself (who was off the board so that's unlikely) then Burke could have said no. Burke's ego is his biggest weakness. He thinks he has all the answers.

I think people read way too much into it and are way too homerish about this incident. As much as I wish there was something to it I doubt there is...would also be hilarious to see the tune change if(and it a huge if hahaha) Kadri becomes an absolute offensive stud

I really don't think this was a planned stunt by Murray. I think he was taken aback by Burke showing his hand and bringing up Kadri and just went with it. Kadri, from I found on wikipedia, wasn't even in the top 10 rankings for NA based players that year.

No proof, there was probably the usual "We got the guy we wanted.", statement right after Cowen was picked. That, and because Burke is an idiot. Take your pick really. Even if Murray wanted Kadri and "settled" for Cowen - he ended up better off for it. So either Burke missed a chance to get something out of us in return for letting us pick Cowen or he "stole" a guy from us that ended up being a bust compared to the guy we ultimately took. The sweet, glorious beauty of it all is there's no scenario where Burke comes out on top. Even if Kadri ends up being the next Crosby and Cowen is a total bust, Burke could have still gotten Kadri AND gotten something from Murray in the process.

That was a great clip of Burke & Murray. See when Murray hesitated when Burke asked if the Sens were taking Kadri? Murray was building the defense... it was Cowen all the way.. Glad it worked out the way it did. Would Murray do a similar trade like he did with Rundblad. Trade the 15th overall for a defenseman drafted last season or the year before that? Pierre Dorion did say they have a listing of, I think, 16 players... So they feel they will get a good draft pick at 15... But you never know with Murray.

For those who got off work early have a head start towards the long weekend, do yourself a favor and check out http://lastwordonsports.com/category/lastwordblog/nhldraft/ It is a fantastic take on many of the draft eligible players in this year's draft in a comprehensive ranking. It's an excellent read, and beats the crap out of Craig Button's rankings. There seem to be a plethora of solid defencemen picks to be had around 15, so we should be able to get a prospect that the club needs.
