Wow, never saw so much back and forth, on bringing in another goalie, to save our situation without Anderson. On Saturday, we play at home vs the Big,Bad, Bruins!! Should see Auld in nets, and I think he can have a great game, and eventually beat the Bruins. Maybe give Lehner the Islander game on Sunday, so this way, we can evaluate both Auld and Lehner. Losing Anderson is not good, but our replacement goalies can certainly win us games, and Murray will not go after another insurance goalie, and we should be fine, and still qualify for the playoffs !

Chirp you don't need to defend yourself or your site to any of us (Zach excepted). But full props to you. Your tweet was the first actual confirmation I saw on this and you brought the whole story here as it broke. Can't help but read the critics. I see posters ripping into me on HF and just wish those same people would come back and acknowledge when it turns out the news was legit. Nature of the business I guess. Chirp, you have a pretty good following and by no way is this sute like Eklunds at all. All the haters feed off you too. You should take a break for a week and see all the people wish you were back. Personally I would hate it but all the fools on HFBoards would have nothing to bitch about. Thanks for the great site.

@Mark and others: I'm not saying you don't trade anyone or that players should be coddled. But I stand by my position that players notice how teams treat them. Flipping Hossa I guarantee you was remembered by UFAs looking at Ottawa. We've done (or I should say Bryan Murray has done) a good job of erasing that memory and replacing it with signs that Ottawa will reward players for being key parts of the team. Fisher was moved to Nashville out of respect for his contributions over the years. Phillips got the three year deal he was looking for. Neil was allowed to test the market before deciding to sign back here. I could go on. I don't want to see that ruined for a shot at (how much did Mark say?) - 1000 season tickets? LOL You don't think we're already going to see an upswing in season tickets based on the way this team has played and how bright the future looks? Do you really think that getting ransomed by LA for Bernier is going to make a major difference in season ticket sales? Bernier will not come cheap. LA knows the market is good for him and if Murray comes asking for him they'll take him to the cleaners. I said all along if they can get him for a 4th then do it (or some other "bargain") but I don't think we should get into a bidding war for a guy that we just don't NEED long term. At least not as badly as we need another top 4 D or top 6 winger. You won't agree and that's fine. I'm not saying I'm right and nobody else could possibly be. I'm just saying that nobody was worried about adding another #1 goalie 24 hours ago and Anderson will be 100% long, long, long before the rebuild is over.

I agree that Silfverberg is more NHL ready. However you got to also notice that Zibanejad is putting up points for a extremely low scoring team, and Djurgarden is the second worst team in the league right now. Ideally i would love to see both of them make it next year. Lol Djurgarden is playing so poor this year that even though Zibanejad has 10 points in 21 games, he has the fourth highest point per game average in his team and he is still 18. that is a very good point, glad you brought it up in fact. from what i understand, zibanejad is the face of djurgaden and bascially if he had a team like Brynas, yes he would be a point per game player as well. zibanejad has no support, too many times ive watched him set up incredible palys, bot his line mates cant finish. silfverberg on the other hand does have calle jarnkrok (red wings 2nd rounder) who i would really love trading for. although calle is out with an injury right now and detroit know damn well how good those 2 players are together, some went as far as comparing their chemistry similar to sedins on some nights (but thats obviously near impossible). also take into account that zibanejad doesnt always play on the top line. silfverberg obviously is always the go to winger. only difference between the two is silfver always puts the puck in the net with or without support. (due to age/experience)

Unleash The Lehner. Do NOT sell or trade for anything else. Only other goalie i could think of worth while looking at was Boucher. He did a decent job in philly but lost to a numbers game. And is now somewhere in the minors if that. could be had for a late pick, if anyone still has his rights anymore. If not, stand pat. Andy can come back, and the team in front is playing well. Its been said before, so lets roll with it now. Unleash. The. Lehner.

Hate that I even have to write it but it would be nice to get some credit considering the flack I was taking in the comment section this week. While it started with a post on HF, I confirmed the story with sources, determined the nature of the injury and provided the most accurate estimation of the time line before any media even mentioned the injury. As a fan, this injury is awful news but I hope that readers realize I was way out front on this one. Folks that visit the site on a regular basis know I'm not the type to seek accolades but some times people need to give credit where it's due.

You know we could have avoided this if Murray actually went out and grabbed a decent back-up with a higher ceiling, as opposed to having a back-up just for the sake of having one a.k.a filling a spot. Anyone else would have been fine, hell he could have grabbed Theodore or Biron. But he went out and grabbed Alex Auld. The reason people are in panic mode is the lack of faith in our back up, and we have good reason to have very little faith. Like I mentioned a few posts back, many teams have great tandems in net, it's what we're seeing more and more in the NHL. Sure, a back up only plays once a month, if that, but I'd rather have a back up end the season with a say 10-10 record as opposed to a 5-15. That's 5 wins, 10 points, towards the standings. Murray did not expect to be in a playoff position. This was all about player development this year. Melnyk wanted to be near the cap floor -- that is probably why Auld was signed. Murray said it would be Lehner if Anderson got hurt and Auld understood that. Don't you think for a minute if Murray, at the beginning of the season, thought this team would make the playoffs that he would not have signed a better backup.. of course he would have... They only wanted a backup for 1 yr.. maybe those other ones you mentioned wanted longer term and Murray did not want that. This team surprised everybody.. and nobody would have predicted this injury....

It's not that linear. And Bernier is some sort of guarantee of more playoff games than Lehner? I agree the odds are better perhaps given Bernier is more proven - but is it worth it to hurt the team in the long run but dipping into our prospects? What happens for the next two years? Andy/Bernier as a tandem and Lehner growing moldy in Bingo? It's that Linear - it's a BUSINESS - never forget that. And no Bernier is not a guarantee but I would feel much better with Lehner and Bernier than Lehner and Auld. And no I'm not saying trade our future - LA is not looking to the future - they are looking for scoring - like NOW! Do you seriously not think Murray is looking at ALL options right now? If he isn't he's not doing his job. Your #1 goalie just went down for 4-6 weeks, you're 3 days away from trade deadline, sitting "comfortably" in 7th in the conference - he had better be looking and listening. And if we get Bernier or Schnieder (another pipe dream) then bye bye Andy come Feb trade deadline or June draft 2013 - worst case 2014 You're forgetting that good business means following a good business plan. Ours if a long term one, three years to be specific. No way BM would waste valuable prospects and picks for a fringe number one. I guess we'll see won't we - never say never - my money is on us having a new NHL experienced goalie in our system by end of Trade deadline Monday. Who it is and what they cost remains to be seen.

Ottawa signed Hossa and flipped him 2 hrs later - do you think he knew hat when he signed? Wake up and smell the coffee. Murray simply needs a "plan" on the outside chance Anderson is out for more then 4 weeks - end of story. We can't go into the last 20 games with Auld and Lehner - I hope Lehner comes in and stands on his head but a good GM has a Plan B - if that be turns out to be Bernier then all the better. An embarrassment of riches in he NHL is never a bad thing. We can afford a little insurance in goal right now.

The point is when Melnyk & Murray made up 'their plan' -- the playoffs were probably the last thing on their minds in the first year. They are far ahead of where the re-build was supposed to be... Yes if they can't stay in the playoffs that would be awful for the players and the fans.... I can't see Murray mortgaging the future for another goaltender when he would not be a guarantee of making the playoffs. Say they give up Stone and a 1st for a goalie and Spezza or Karlsson gets hurt.. (god forbid) then the playoffs are definitely out no matter who was in net and they just traded away part of the future. Stay the course... keep the re-build... let's hope the Sens can go .500 and Anderson is only out about 4 weeks and not the 8 weeks it could take.

So if you're BM and you traded for Anderson last year; Anderson came in (rushed to get to his first game half-way through), played his heart out at the end of the year; you signed him to a three year deal; Anderson is one of the biggest reasons the team is ahead of schedule on the rebuild and in the playoff mix - making you look like a genius .... And then he gets hurt and you just trade him away and put all your eggs in the Bernier basket? Cold man. @Mark - You do understand that having two home games in the playoffs doesn't make anyone rich right? $2M cash in gate (and no player salaries to make it) - another 1000 seasons tickets for 2012/13 at $4000 a pop ($400K) and a 5-8% increase over last years season ticket revenue ($3.4M) (- thats about $5.8M - in my books that makes someone rich (or more accurately, "richer") doesn't it?
You make it sound like the players don't know how they're treated when they jump into the big leagues. There's a reason why some players have NTC and others don't.
Guys you have to remember that there's a thing called integrity and commitment to your players. Do you think it's easy for Murray to lure UFAs to a boring, government town in a small market with a library for an arena? Not to mention you get all that but still have the pressure you get playing in Toronto or Montreal from the fan base and the media. You want him to make life even harder by bailing on players at the drop of a hat? If so, get ready to sign a million more Kovalevs for more money/term than other teams are offering and forget about getting anyone really good without paying double what he's worth and demanding a NMC. I guess we could just hope to draft well ... but then lose them when they become RFAs and want the heck out before the GM stabs them in the back. Yeah I know - it's a business right? They should be okay with having to relocate their families with no notice or being treated like cattle. Maybe Burke thinks he can get away with that sitting in Toronto or the Candiens can but smaller markets can't. Look at Detroit - would they treat players like that? And nearly every NHLer wants to play there - hmmmmmmm. I'm not saying you never trade guys but players notice when a player goes from home-town hero to getting bailed on overnight due to an injury.

And if we get Bernier or Schnieder (another pipe dream) then bye bye Andy come Feb trade deadline or June draft 2013 - worst case 2014

and here go the loony make-belief trades by sens fans.... all of a sudden people want to trade for all of LA's studs and their captain.... while brown is nice, I dont think he is worth giving up the sens carefully drafted and developed forward prospects. even more so because the sens have finally built up the depth that will be ever so useful with inevitable injuries, slumps, cap accomodations etc. etc. the two places where the sens need to build depth....which is actually what a good GM does during a rebuild btw.....are defense and goaltending. Goaltending has been thrust ahead as some of us (including me) were predicting. With Anderson's injury, Lehner is now being pushed ahead as opposed to what the plan was. From the sounds of it, Anderson will be hard pressed to be back before the playoffs, which means that Lehner has probably had his last callup and will be atleast the backup next season. Ottawa needs to add more goalies to its depth chart - not to its roster- which it can displace into the AHL and ECHL so that the line never dries up. There is currently no body after Lehner. Getting another goalie who is already at the NHL level will create a very costly and unnecessary logjam in the crease which will no doubt create a goalie controversy. Therefore, this boils down to really two options: 1. get a half-decent backup who is better than Alex Auld but has a ceiling prediction much lower than Lehner and can be used as an asset at any point. Don't know who this guy will be, but definitely tough to find. This is guaranteed to not happen. 2. This is already happening: call Lehner up and ride it through. Don't forget he survived a pretty hot toronto team in his one and only start.

"Org depth" was probably the wrong way to put it. Meant more our future in goal for the foreseeable future. We've got Anderson for another two years and Lehner a very solid prospect. So no big rush (IMO) to get Bernier. Would I take him for our 4th rounder - duh! But I think we're more "set" in goal right now than we are up front (or on D). So not really interested in giving up anything significant to get Bernier. Still haven't seen anyone explain to my why Bernier is suddenly a need. This year doesn't mean anything - we're rebuilding. Just because we've got a shot at making the playoffs earlier than planned doesn't change that. Lets see - um $$$! AOne playoff gate is worth $1M - 2 - $2M and so on and so on. Sens were giving seasons ticketa way this year - they won't be next year if they make the playoffs - each round means mo $$$

Why not let that list of guys battle for spots and then worry about whether we need another guy or not. On July 1st 2014 Murray can go sign a big UFA or two to fill up any remaining gaps in our lineup. Not saying he can't/shouldn't make good hockey trades, but there's no bloody rush to trade away young prospects who could turn out to be better than Brown (or other names dropped here).

Butler / Greening / Condra / Feligno Zibanejad Stone Silfverberg Petersson Prince Noesen Pumpel Realistically, there's no way we will ever have room for all these guys on the big club. Not even close. I'm not sure what Brown's contract status is, but as far as I'm concerned, it would almost be irresponsible for BM not to package one of these guys with Gonshar, even throw in a 3rd rounder or something, to get a bona fide power forward for that second line. If you can get Bernier in the process, so much the better, but we could really benefit from some additional scoring up front. Note, I'm not advocating getting rid of Zibanejad, Stone, or Silfverberg, but any of the others is fair game as far as I'm concerned. And after all, isn't that what Murry agets paid to do? Evaluate talent and decide which guys are worth keeping?

likely something we are unwilling to part with - unless they want Kuba or Gonchar which is unlikely - LA is all about the here and now - like TODAY. I disagree. They aren't happy with Dustin Brown so I would think something like Foligno, DaCosta or Butler and a 3rd might get it done. Foligno is a wannabe power forward that just isn't cutting it here. Maybe he does better in LA. I would move Foligno for Brown in a second. Brown is way beyond Foligno - perenially 50-60 pts - and is he not their captain? Can we afford Foligno and Gonchar (and a pick) for Brown and Bernier? That would make for a very sweet trade day. We'll know hte severity of Anderson's injury if Murray goes out and gets a starting goalie or insurnace Gonchar has a NMC. I doubt he gets moved. Forget Bernier, we have Lehner waiting in the wings. Foligno DaCosta conditional pick (depending on how far we get in playoffs) Brown wouldn't do it if I was LA - not enough. We can accomidate Bernier, Lehner and Anderson for 1 more year. Bernier and Lehner to satrt 2013/14 would be pretty cool.

Hey guys... it just got possible worse. More info from the Sun. Anderson had surgery on his hand and was still in the hospital today. He is seeing a specialist. Injuries such as this (worse case scenario) is a 6-8 week recovery. Happy Thursday. Blah... Leafs LOST... thanks SJ.. Winnipeg is winning 2-0 over Tampa... surprise, surprise. I personally (then what do I know) can't see Murray doing a panic trade. If he can get a cheap backup he will... but not at the price of Zibanejad & Silfverberg. It's still yr 1 of the re-build.. I don't think they will lose focus on that. Paying a high price for a goaltender and not end up in the playoffs at all or out in the 1st round... is just too high a price... not worth the risk. It will be up to the rest of the guys on the team to rally behind both goaltenders and play the best defensive game they can. Sens have 72 pts with 20 games left. If they can win 10 of those... that gets them to 92 pts... will it be enough?

So you'd rather have Bernier at the end of the bench waiting to play one of the 10 games Anderson doesn't start than have Silfverberg on the ice for 18 minutes or so with Alfie and Turris next year? Not really haggling over the exact value, but my main point is that we have decent organizational depth in goal and what we don't have we should be drafting (i.e. to follow Lehner if he doesn't pan out). I just think we have a bigger need at forward. And of course NOBODY was calling for us to go get a Bernier or equivalent before Andy sliced his paw - which shouldn't change anything about our plans for next year and beyond.

Yeah let's just continue to bleed Bingo dry? Howard spent years in the AHL before jumping up to this level, and it served him just fine. By bringing him up and keeping him in the NHL right now, we risk hindering his development, and overassessing him.
I remember listening to Todd White talk on the Team 1200 one night, and e said the Lehners game is far more suited for the NHL then it is for the AHL. Goalies who can read plays, predict where shots are coming from and react quickly to deflections by being good positionally are more suited for the NHL.... which Lehner is. The AHL is more of a garbage goal/scramble league where the goalies who flop and cover more net tend to do better, because there is less system play. The point is, just because Lehner hasn't been lights out in the AHL, doesnt mean he wont perfrom well in the NHL. Shit, lets give the kid a shot, giving the kids a shot is why we are where we are right now... so lets go for it. If her fails, go for Bernier.

Please explain to me what the problem with having two bluechip goalie prospect is. Doesnt have to be Bishop but another young stud goalie to ensure that we havent put all our eggs into the Lehner basket is exactly what this team needs for the future. Because to the homer sens fan, there can only be one.. little do they realize though, the two finalist of last years final had amazing "back-ups" that were fully capable of being a full time no.1 any where else.. Unfortunately for the Sens, we have never had that luxury. We've at best, had two back ups playing pretend no.1.. Schneider/Luong o, Rask/Thomas, Brodeur/Hedberg , Lundquist/Biron , Howard/Macdonal d. See what those elite teams have in common? You get Bernier to let Lehner continue to develop in the AHL. Nothing wrong with Anderson/Bernie r. In fact, that'd be pretty damn nice. You don't think Anderson/Lehner is good enough?

Exactly my point! I'm not saying that Bernier doesn't fit the rebuild but nobody anywhere was looking to add another young goalie until a few hours ago. And Anderson will be 100% before next year - so what has changed??? If you feel/felt all along that we would be smart to part with Puemple to get Bernier (or something) then that's fine but I never read anyone say that. My point is that unless it makes sense with a healthy Anderson there's no reason to do it now. This season is BONUS. The real (and only significant) focus is 2-3 years from now.
