Its really hard to identify one specific group and generalize their contributions to a team relative to salary. There are a number of Canadian busts that got paided an awful lot to underperform, Daigle, Penner, Redden, Gomez, Briere, Cheechoo, Commodore, Finger, Huet, Lapointe (BOS), Bouwmeester, and others on the website included in this post. I think its foolishness and unfair to pick on the russians considering one of our best Dman - ATrain was, well Russian. He gave his heart, soul and body every game. I didn't see Commodore, Picard, Corvo, Redden et al give that same commitment.

@ Alcatraz, Drafted in 1991 by NY Rangers ! Good for you, and Kovalev must have been with the Rangers when he won SC . It was 1994 when Messier promised the fans a Stanley Cup ! I'm sure he loves the SC Ring, but he was just as useless as Yashin during the playoffs, after his first Stanley Cup. Looking back at earlier post, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and a few others were drafted in 6th or 7th round, and these guys cared about winning SC, !! Swedes, Finlanders are like Canadians or North Americans. The names you say at opening, still dream of SC. Because they do not win one, does not make them fall into Yashin, Kovie etc group.
while Russians simply want money, RUSSIANS DO NOT CARE ABOUT WINNING A STANLEY CUP !!!! @ The Apostle, Never said all , but sure as hell most ! so, there are two examples from today when you did - there is no qualification in either statemnt, just a sweeping generalisation with the implication that all people covered under the statement think the same way Also your statement about players not making money from getting to the playoffs is incorrect. It's called a perfromance bonus and I would assume that most players have that in their contract. I know for a fact that the majority of sens players do (which is incidentally why getting to the 1st round of the playoffs will cost the sens money).

How would you know such a thing? You don't! Just ridiculous comments. I guess we should only draft Canadians from here on out, even if the best player's available are Russian's, Swedes, American's, Czech's, because only Canadian's dream of winning the cup.
Do we really have to reignite this crappy point of view again? I am sure there are some Russians who care about reaching the pinnacle of their chosen career whether that be the Olympics in an international sense or the Stanley Cup in a domestic sense. Malkin looked fairly happy when Pittsburgh won the cup - however I am assuming based on what I read on these boards that all he was thinking of when he won the Conn Smythe was what the bonus clause in his contract was. Equally I am just as convinced that there are players from all nationalities that are in it only for the money, but that is a symptom of their own personality traits not their nationality. To cover all Russians in one sweeping statement is ignorant and borderline racist.

At 10:35 Stone has a problem with his skate, and is replaced on that shift by Gallagher. Gallagher has a great shift, and sets up Schwartz (who is in for Huberdeau due to misconduct)on that shift. Up until this point Stone has logged 2:54 of ice time in the 3rd. They go back to the same line that scored the next shift and Gallagher scores. (8 minutes remaining) At 6:58 Stone comes back on the ice with Huberdeau (this is the first shift for Huberdeau since the Misconduct). On this same shift they draw a penalty. On this PP they score with Stone setting the screen. With 5:55 Ferraro makes a poor comment saying Stone has been benched, without actually having any merit, which is where people have gotten the rumor from. With 5 minutes remaining the 3rd Stone has played 3:54 seconds in the 3rd period. --- Continued ---

Before I post this, I want to say I'm not someone who is saying Stone is going to play next year in the NHL. I think he has far surpassed what we expected him to be, and he has the potential to become a top 6 talent, which is not something we would have assumed when we drafted him. However, he has proven nothing at this level, and there are lots of players who are junior stars who don't make it. There are also lots of people who weren't supposed to be any good, and had lots of doubters who become stars. Anyways, I just wanted to post this because statements by people on here today were not correct regarding Stone in Canada's loss last night.

The one thing I noticed last night with the younger Russians was their ability to forecheck and relentless pursuit of the puck. Sure a few dropped like a bag of pucks when hit and tried to sell the play but many were tough nosed players forechecking and playing the body. One thing for sure that is sure to be seen in the next few years is the impact Ovechkin and Malkin will have on Russian Youth hockey. These were two players, Ovie more so, that have excelled in the NHL and have not been shy when it comes to body contact and getting dirty, and for the first time last night it looked like the Russians could no longer be bullied (irony since we bullied Ovie and Malkin aruond when they were in WJC)

I find it interesting that those who were rightfully lauding Stone for his performances in the group games are conveniently overlooking the fact that in the most important game that Canada played things didn't go so well for him. I also find it interesting that the commentators specifically mentioned that Stone barely saw the ice once Huberdeau took his penalty. Stone's puck handling and pasing is better than I expected but to get the most out of him he will need a set up man. As I have stated many times, let the guy play in Bingo next year and see what happens, I still think he needs a lot of development, but I think he's in a good place to get that.

Stone did not play much in the 3rd because Huberdeau was sitting in the box for 10 minutes. Thats purely the reason why. Stone then played more in the final minutes for 2 reasons: 1) Hubie was back 2) Stone can take right handed faceoffs unbelievably well Stone was awesome don't get me wrong, but before we give him the Justin Pogge treatment, lets see how he does in terms of professional development. He is at least 2 or 3 years a way at the earliest and he will have to improve in many areas, but no one can deny his ability to read plays and find the holes in the slot for a great passer(Hubie) to find him Grant it, like many or the majority of ppl on here have never watched a single Stone game aside from when he wears the Red maple leaf, so my basis is off what I have seen the past week

He was benched. It wasn't just a skate. @ Tyrant, You are becoming more redundant every day . Do you not have anything positive to post ?? You also omitted to reply to my last comment, probably on purpose, as usual. Yours was around midnight, and mine was early this AM . Seems as though you are a one dimensional poster, who loves to pick apart and nit-pick!

Yet another garbage post from Snoopy Senior. Canadian sports media love to make the Russian's look bad, and it looks like you've taken the bait like so many others have. For every Yashin, Kovalev, or Semin, there's a great driven Russian player like Datsyuk, Federov, Malkin, Bure, Larionov and the list goes on and on and on.. To automatically assume Yakupov and Grigorenko will become the next Yashin or Filatov is a complete joke, especially when they've both come over as teenagers to learn the north american game.

He was benched. It wasn't just a skate. I have looked everywhere to find the time on ice for the players and I guess they don't keep track. So I guess we will agree to disagree. Either way, missing a few shifts in the game last night whether it be by a bad skate and/or being benched will not make or break Stone's potential NHL career. If he is good enough he will make it, if he is not good enough, he will be one of many players who can say they played for Team Canada and didn't make the NHL. Which is probably a whole lot more than either one of us can say.

I for one was impressed with Stone throughout this tournament. Regardless of what happened in the 3rd period of the last game, it doesn't matter. Canada as a unit fell flat for the opening 2 periods, and it takes a team to do that, not one player. coaching staff went with the energy guys in the 3rd and that's why the ice was limited for Stone. It says alot that they put him out when they wanted the points. Even TSN pools have Stone at 58% of the vote for which top scorer was the most impressive overall in the round robin, and that's all of Canada and who knows who else voting. Let's just enjoy what we all had the chance to witness and keep cheering him and the rest of the guys on.

I feel bad for Canada.. but they 'shot themselves in the foot' -- so to speak -- in the 1st two periods. Great third period comeback. Russians were lucky the Canadians hit the posts near the end of the game.. I've watched parts of most of all the games on TV during this tournament.. and the only game Yakupov stood out to me was last night. He has 0 goals & 9 assists.. with 4 coming last night -- I would have thought he would have had more points than 5 going into last night's game. He is a very fast skater and shifty -- lots of skill there... but there is just something about him that I don't like. I can't really say what... just something (please don't call me crazy). I felt bad for Ryan Murray. Bad luck on those first 3 Russian goals.. He is such a smooth skater and until last night had a really good tournament. Go Mika... Go Sweden... you did it once -- beat Russia... do it again.

IMO they should at the very least receive some strong words of advice about their duties on the ice ,as far as the WJC we are never gonna win them all ,and whatever team ends up with Yakapov will be signing a deal with the devil this guy is classless and just furthers my belief that superstar Russians should be left in the KHL

HAd Stone scored everyone would have said "oh I knew he would be the one" but if I had to give the puck to one player and one player only in the Offensive Zone and say "Go score" Stone isn't the guy which is sad since he is a goal scorer. A better question to ask is what does Mark Stone have to do to prove he is an NHL player. The answer is to continue to improve the areas in which he is deficient and take chances when they are offered. he can start to do that in Bingo next year. I also never stated that you believed that Stone would be with the sens next year, I said that many believe he will. If you go back through the posts for the past 2 weeks you will see numerous suggestions that he will be on the first line next year or he will tear up the NHL or will be exactly what Turris needs. These unrealistic expectations just set the kid up to fail.
@Apostle, I appreciate your posts, but respectfully disagree on Stone. What more does the kid need to do to prove he is a legit prospect? Nail Yagapov(sp) is still not drafted and people are drooling over this kid, yet Stone produces more numbers, seems more of a presence and yet still gets little respect from some on this site. He is the leading point producer in the CHL, leads all Can Juniors in goals, but what has really struck me is that he is NOT a one dimensional player, in fact last night his playmaking was excellent, and he set up both Strome and Huberdeau with open nets. His presence was evident yesterday, and I will say it again, I would rather Stone on my team than Nail on my team any day... for many reasons, and not point production. And I never said he would be in the lineup next year, I said he would be in 3 years when we challenge for the cup! I Still stand by that

@pez i agree with you regarding Condra and Greening but Smith was always expected to be a handy NHL player. He has still surprised people though. Using Condra and Greening as examples though, as you just did, can you understand why people might think that all the Mark Stone talk is a little premature? This is their first full year in the NHL and they were drafted 5 and 6 years ago respectively. Stone was drafted in 2010. If Stone continues to work hard and improve his skating the Sens will give him every chance to make the NHL, but to expect him to come in next season and contribute on our first line, as many seem to believe he will, just doesn't seem realistic. I'm not saying that Stone will never make it with the senators, just that we shouldn't be clamouring for him to be on the roster next season. Give the guy some time.

Tell you what, if Stone is not part of the team in 3 years, and we are not challenging I will buy him a ticket :) I think it's more likely that we'll be challenging in 3 years than it is that Mark Stone being an integral part of that challenge. Mark Stone is one dimensional compared to virtually all of the other forwards on the WJC roster and whilst he is outstanding at the one thing he does well the truth is that very few one dimensional players excell at the NHL level. I think he has considerable work to do before graduating including a lengthy stint with Bingo.

I find it interesting Janne Laukkanen claims others have never played hockey or have no experience with hockey when all he has shown is ignorance. As though it's actually better for the team to lose and get a good draft pick than it is to develop our current crop in a winning environment. I mean, we've all seen what getting low draft picks year after year has done for Edmonton and Columbus. This year has gone perfectly so far for the Sens. We already have enough high end talent to develop now it's about winning and getting the most out of these young guys. Props Chirp. He's probably just upset because he predicted Ottawa to be the worst team in the league along with the rest of the 'experts.'

Nobody knows whether Stone will make it as a pro, however look at 3 guys that the Sens have drafted that were longshots to make the AHL let alone be important contributors with the Sens. Zach Smith drafted in the 3 round 79 overall in 2008 as a 20 year old. Eric Condra drafted in the 7 round 211 overall in 2006 as a 20 year old. Colin Greening drafted in the 7th round 204 overall in 2005 as a 19 year old. Seems to me that if any team can develop players it's the Sens. So it might take a few years, but as we have seen you can teach players to skate and get stronger but Stone has one thing you can't teach and that is a scoring touch.

With about 10 to go he was lining up for a faceoff and had to ask the lineseman if he could leave the ice and he pointed to his skate. Stone in the final few minutes must have taken at least 3 or 4 draws on the right faceoff circle in the Russian end.

Yeah that's because he can't even skate well enough @ Tyrant, He played well in all of the games, and will have a great career in the NHL. His skating will improve, and though I did not see 3rd period, Coach Hay benched him for another player, who maybe was more intense. Even a "superstar like Ovechkin" got benched, a few games ago by former Coach Boudreau !! Amazing how you just love to pick on posters, when you want to show negativity !!
Leaving aside the officiating and other such excuses, I can't believe how much better the Russian team is than the Canadian team. They seem to be faster, better organized, and just generally superior, especially in net. Translation: 5 - 1 Russia after 2 periods. The Canadian team should watch a couple of this year's Sens' 3rd period performances for inspiration on the intermission.

Considering Alfie's resurgence, I'd like to see him play out the last year of his contract. He'll nail down a top six role in 2012-2013 and give Zibanajad and Stone another year to develop. Stone certainly should play down in Bingo for a year and dominate to gain some confidence, and let Zibanajad play another year in the SEL. There's no rush to insert them into the lineup in my opinion (with Spezza, Michalek, Turris, Alfie, Foligno and Greening rounding out the top 6). Browsing the web I found it quite interesting that both Perry and Getzlaf are free agents in 2013. With the Murray connection I wonder if he'd consider either player (especially Perry to play on Spezza's wing) with both Alfie and Gonchar coming off the books.

Janne Laukanen: What are you so upset about? Most pundits and respectable hockey news providers had us pegged for 13-15th in our conference. Foligno and Smith are having great seasons. Spezza and Karlsson have remained healthy and have produced well. At the start of the season, people said, "Wait 5 or 6 games..." After a few games, people said, "wait 25-20 games" Well, we're half way through the season and we're competing for the playoffs in our development year, not to mention the comebacks and RIDICULOUSLY exciting hockey (what a crazy juxtaposition with last year!). I'll give you Chirp is an optimist, but right now, there's reason to be. Sens fans should be pleased at our progress, even WITH half a season to play. Jesus...
