Filatov is 21. Lots of players take until 24-25 to develop, Greening for example. I think he needs to increase his strength, shot, and compete level. He does however have a certain element of creativity to his game that few players have the skill level to use. I think what he needs is a full season in the NHL where he is told no matter what you're playing with the big boys. You might sit out a game here and there but you're here. That way he can build up confidence and see if he can perform at this level. If not then we send him wherever to continue development until he's ready for another shot at it. The guy is a long-term project but if the Sens are patient as an organization there is no reason he can't at least be a top nine forward. He's got speed and the skills.

I thought Filatov did OK against Dallas. He is worth persevering with as long as he is working hard and listening to the coaches. If it doesn't pan out at least both sides gave it a shot. I never understood those that thought he was going to score 20 or 30 goals this season (as some predicted on here). He came here with less than 50 games of NHL experience, 6 goals (3 in his first game). I don't know what people expected. He's a prospect, let's treat him as such.

I was one of the ones, when the Filatov trade was announced, who thought he was going to, finally, show why he was drafted so high. To be honest, I'm still waiting to see it, and now think I was wrong on him. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sens allow him to go the the KHL. I hope I'm wrong (again?), and maybe you guys see it differently?

Agree that Penner is overvalued but he is under 30 as are all the players I mentioned. I had never really thought about Parise much prior to this but realizing that the Sens have put themselves into a cap position and can show a UFA that they have a good number of pieces to compete in the near future, it might not be to far off of a possiblity. His agent has said that he would test the market. What would be a reasonable pitch to bring him in? Would definately make Alfie's skills being lost when he retires a slight bit more bearable....

and to add to Appostle agreed no word from the Sens, but on top of that, can we name one successful UFA we have had? Off the top of my head I cannot think of a clear win in a UFA from any team, (I know if we dig we will find a few but they do not come cheap, so it is and expensive risk) but there are more than plenty teams that have gambled and lost on UFA. I say there is a reason they become a UFA. I say continue to build from the draft, and look for possible win/win trades, vs the UFA route IMO of course

Here's a couple of things regarding the sens being "plenty outspoken" about getting a UFA. 1) It's terrible writing. 2) They can't have been that "plenty outspoken" if the only place any of us have heard about it is from Yost's blog on HockeyBuzz. Most of us keep a good handle on various websites about the sens and whilst I agree with chirp's assessment that the sens are well placed to take a run at any UFA this year they must have been "plenty inspoken" about it considering hardly any of us have heard anything about it. Yost should stick to opinion pieces at which he is OK and stop trying to steal the thunder from his site's leading father figure and doofus Eklund. Any rumour or perceived insider information from that site is as close to worthless as it's possible to be.

please no offence to anyone, but no to Brassard. I may be in the minority, but I still believe in Regin, after a rough year last year, he started strong, and won the 2C position, and even with him out, now one has taken it away. I remember 2 years ago, that he had me off my seat more than a few times. After him we have DaCosta, and others still vying for a spot on the top 6 with Butler, Filatov and even Daugavins. Then next year Zibby is back Silverber, so to add an experiment that will cost us over 6 mil, is really not worth the risk. And I am really sick of playing players not on merit, but on contracts, and we know the list of those players is endless here in Ottawa. Have a great Saturday all, and here is to Filatov, filling the net tonight Go Sens Go!!!

That was the first I'd heard of that as well. Plenty have speculated that Ottawa would be well positioned to take a run at a UFA next summer but as far as the organization being outspoken about it? I'm not so sure.
Chirp, Yost has on his post today about the deal with the BJ's for Brassard being sticky due to the salary as you and everyone else has reported but he also mentions that the Sens have "been plenty outspoken about their willingness to bring in a big-name free agent as early as next off-season" This is the first I have heard such ramblings, what is your take on that? Apart from Parise, there is only Penner, Prust and Jones that I would think would even fit that category. I know Semin is also UFA but I would hope the Sens would not even venture that route.

@ sandy Greening - Spezza - Filatov Alfy - Zibby - Michalek Smith - Regin - Daug Neil - Foligno - Silfverberg Condra - Da Costa - Butler Winchester then add Brassard That's way too many -- 17 forwards.... I believe Konopka gets traded at the deadline. A contending team could make good use of him in the playoffs. I can't see too many of the Sens current forwards traded at the deadline as they, right now, have nothing in Binghamton to bring up other than Petersson or Hoffman.. It does help that 6 of those forwards contracts are up at the end of the year ...Petersson isnt ready yet and Hoffman is a lifer AHL'er ...I dont see Z being traded he has on-ice presence for all the young talent coming next year he will be needed ..

Assuming the return is not insulting, all of this guys will go at the deadline (if they're not gone already): Konopka Winchester (98% chance anyway) Kuba Carkner Even Auld might go. Unless Murray feels letting one of those guys go might hurt the team morale, they're gone by the deadline. Or I guess if he's already swung a bunch of trades and we need the bodies to complete the season - which is unlikely. I say 98% for Winchester since there's about a 2% chance he plays his way into our future plans or that we get a combination of offers on other guys that leaves Winnie as our best 4th line center.

Klinkhammer: http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=7295 Don't get too excited though - hockeyprospects ' page on him is blank. Cool name, but clearly a depth signing for Bingo. (Not that that's a bad thing.)

Don't know about that trade for Brassard... it is a gamble.. But IF they do get him... what are they going to do with all the forwards that COULD be on the Sens next year? Greening - Spezza - Filatov Alfy - Zibby - Michalek Smith - Regin - Daug Neil - Foligno - Silfverberg Condra - Da Costa - Butler Winchester then add Brassard That's way too many -- 17 forwards.... I believe Konopka gets traded at the deadline. A contending team could make good use of him in the playoffs. I can't see too many of the Sens current forwards traded at the deadline as they, right now, have nothing in Binghamton to bring up other than Petersson or Hoffman..

We can get higher priced talent at any time really. The only trades we should be making now are ones where we're getting someone on a bargain contract or someone who's going to be an RFA soon and we want a shot to sweet talk him first etc. Other than basic hockey trades where we're moving out spare parts, vets, expiring contracts, bigger contracts etc of course.

Really 47 points last year...big deal? Butler had 21 points in 31 games in his rookie year, are you sure he is better than him? If he cannot crack the lineup on one of the worst teams in the NHL, what makes you think he could crack ours? I am saying we have enough experiments, and do not want to "have to play him" next year b/c we are paying him 3 Mil, that all

@miguel - brassard has more than proven himself compared to those you list in your post. he had 47 points last year! he had 25 points in 31 games in 08/09. i wouldnt trade anything that figures into future plans but if we can get him for the right price, especially if the price includes Kuba (or to a lesser extent, Lee) as part of what goes back, I'd be very happy.

Chirp, I am still not seeing the point in Brassard. He is another experiment on a long list of experiments we already have, Filatov, Regin, DaCosta, Daugavins, Butler, do we know that he will be better than any of them, has he proven it? Lets roll with these guys for this year, and not have to worry about paying him 3.2 next year, and have to "FIT" him into our top 6 b/c we are paying him too much to be in the bottom 6, again just my opinion

Yeah Chirp... love that name... Klinkhammer... I hope the Sens can trade a defenseman... they need room especially with Carkner on his way back.. they can't rotate 2 D in and out of the lineup. I hope tomorrow is not the night that the Caps come out of their slump. It happened last year.... but come on boys... take it too them.
