As for my pick - I really like Day #2 but day #5 was equally as good. Speaking of #5. I wish that the newer Sens fans were able to experience what it was like when Steve Duschene scored that only goal against Buffalo to get the Sens into the playoffs for the first time in modern franchise history. I vividly remember that game like it was yesterday. What an amazing thrill that was. That series vs Buffalo though ... what a heartbreaker (I still feel for Tugnutt)

Talk about music selection - when I go to Knights games (I'm from London obviously!) the selection of music there is REALLY screwed up. Last season they used Motley Crue's "Kickstart My Heart" to bring the team out. That's cool! Next thing you know during a break in the action they played Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly". I mean, I'm a HUGE Steely Dan fan but really? Of course Knights games "Cotton Eye Joe" is a staple and so is Darude's "Sandstorm" (it's 1999 still I swear). The real kicker is "YMCA".

Another article from days 2 and 4. Let them go wild with whatever topic they choose to do. Doesn't have to be Sens related, but stay within the realm of hockey. Readers from outside of Ottawa probably won't really have an opinion of the city or be up to date with current local events. I also think giving them a surprise article to write in just a few minutes with a given topic would give you a real idea of their writing abilities. Things can change pretty quickly in the NHL world, being able to put together a readable article in just a few minutes is important.

I've also admitted to growing up a Hab supporter as has Robert Cyr, Miguel and Dork among others. I don't remember ever seeing a poster on this site admit to being a former Toronto fan. I think that's because once you've been a member of Leaf Nation your brain becomes so irreparably damaged that it becomes impossible to ever support an organization that might actually win a Stanley Cup.

The leafs suck and have forever so they have something to prove, we don't as we have iced a good team in the past and will again. Also why suround yourself with stupid people (leaf fans) I would rather beat them in the standings than on the ice, they are not worthy of much attention, I would not even play our top players against them, give them the night off to rest for more important games. F--- the leafs. Playing the leafs is like stepping in dogshit, kind of have to step in it due to the schedual

I was at a lot of the games when we played the ducks in the playoffs, the crowd was wild an deafening, I also taped the games and it was the same on TV, we drowned out the anouncers to where they had to pick up their voice to be heard. Also the Arena was all red, felt sorry for those 4 or 5 wearing black. Rowdy breeds Rowdy, everyone went home with a horse voice, season ticket holders and everyone else.
I agree with the concept of this article and we do need to take back our house. We need to get back to a winning atmosphere in the bank and tat would go a long way. We got quite a few convert fans when we went to the cup final but a quick drop off made some of them go back to their old ways and cheering for their old teams. A perfect example of this is my dad... a die hard leafs fan for years and I can hardly have a conversation with him for a long time as he would juts go off about how much he hates the Sens but when they went on their cup run... his exact words were "go ahead and get me a jersey, I will jump on the bandwagon, they are playing some great hockey" Everyone wants their team to win and if they are living in a city that puts a great product on the ice, they will come around

Oh and about Toronto and Montreal coming to town. Firstly those Montreal and Toronto fans only get to see "their team" live a few times a year since the majority live in Ottawa. Rare experiences are more exciting than common ones. Secondly when fan bases cheer against each other they try to one-up each other and it creates a much better atmosphere. It's much more exciting to cheer against another fan base in the building and get riled up having drunken cheering arguments with other fans than to sit as a unified fan base and all feel the same about the result. In a game with a 50/50 split in the crowd one side is always happy about something. That side will always enjoy cheering and rubbing it in the face of the other side. That's half the fun of sports anyways.

Most buildings are loud as hell when the team is winning. People talk about the super loud fan bases of Toronto and Montreal but you can hear a pin drop in those buildings when their team is down by a goal or two. If the game is tied it gets quiet after not too long when there aren't big hits, fights, and goals to cheer about. Fans come to games to be entertained and if the game isn't entertaining you won't hear anything from them. There may be casual fans out there who never go to arenas who think it's disgraceful not to yell because it's a once in a lifetime experience for them to go to a game. The experience is much different for regulars.

Honestly this is the weakest article of the group. It was horribly inaccurate on a couple of points and the main concept is weak. Fans didn't have a chance to grow up with the team the first time around? The government isn't allowed to buy tickets for it's employees so no public servants do not fill the lower bowl. Those are just the wealthier fans who live in Ottawa. It's sometimes quiet in the arena because when you see 41+ games a year and your a season ticket holder you become keenly aware of when you're watching a good hockey game and when you're watching the team take a collective shit all over the ice.

You can't. A friend's dad owns one of the Farm Boy franchises in town and he's a die-hard Leafs fans with season tickets. He gives the non-Leafs games away to employees and lets his son go to the Leafs games. He's not alone as there are a LOT of people in this town that buy seasons just to go see the Habs and Leafs. On top of that, you have Sens fans that give their tickets to Leafs fans because they don't enjoy the atmosphere. Yes, this is true. My best friend's sister and her husband have seasons and they gave away tickets in the 200s to a Leafs fan friend... The ONLY way for Habs and Leafs fans to stop is to either win a Cup or beat them every time we play them,!

As the article says, over time the young will grow loving the Sens and the old will part ways with their teams when they see Ottawa bringing the cup home.
First of all, SCOREBOARD!!! Second, the fanbase represents the team that represents the fanbase. Basically, the team isn't one that hits hard or drops the gloves. They play standard hockey and that isn't very exciting. As much as I love ALfie, a guy like Iginla that drops the gloves is awesome and gets you out of your seat. Two-way play doesn't necessarily get you up and going. That said, a fast, winning team will get the fans pumped. Pizza Line? Fans were going nuts. Downslide Sens? Lots of quiet fans. Leafs in town? Lots of active fans. Nashville? Not so much. This is a chance for the Sens to re-mould themselves. If they took a more physical, dynamic approach the fans would buy in. Sure, we're a government town and quiet and that but...

Wow Vokoun and Hiller are way too low on that list. The hockey writing at yahoo has really taken a dive the last few years. As much as I don't want to admit it, Reimer should make the top 25 over Khabibulin and Kiprusoff shouldn't even be in the top 15 anymore imo. Reimer is a good young goaltender.. BUT he's only played about 35 NHL games. Are they annointing him #1 too early. Can he take the pressure of being the go-to guy in Toronto? They have upgraded their D.. but they are far from the best in the league...

Now that the Jets are back, I will most definitely cheer for both teams. There's a difference between Sens fans and hockey fans. I think SBP suffers from a lot of hockey fans who just want to see hockey no matter who it is. They're not loud or emotionally attached like you wonderful Sens fans are. Hopefully more true Sens fans will emerge soon and you guys can blow the lid off SBP. We'll be doing the same here in Winnipeg.

Chirp, one stat that you may wish to consider: number of posted comments that don't relate to the "guest" as a ratio of the total number of posts each day. #5 takes a hit because other news emerged but otherwise it could be an interesting measure of the writer's ability to hook the audience...
I am still shocked that Vokoun only signed for 1.5 mil. How can Bryzgalov make 8 Mil Luongo approx 8 Mil. Andersono 3.5 Mil. and Vokoun with I believe the best save percentage since the lockout sign at 1.5 ? Was his agent secretly working for Washington? Even if he wanted to go for a winner, he could easily have signed the one year at close to 6-7 mil, as a team would love to have him and not hurt thier future cap space. And what happens if he get hurt or has a bad year? Apparently Vokoun woke up too late and has now fired him. I could have gotten him a bette contract than that, Still it sounds awfully strange,

It's got to be a tough decision for management. On the one hand I totally agree that the atmosphere at games is too "family". Cotton-eye Joe? Yikes. On the other hand, the old retired people are likely to be the ones to renew their tickets faithfully and attend games in the "lean" years ahead - while a fair number of the rowdier fans are going to be quicker to bail if the team isn't winning. Maybe after a couple of rebuilding years when the games are bigger draws they can modernize the music etc since they won't care as much if some old blue-hair complains it's too noisy for her to concentrate on her knitting. At least most of the servers in the 100 level are cute!

Interesting article. but since you are so young you never had the pleasure of being tossed out of great sens playoff games because you were CHEERING on your team. Buffalo game goes to double overtime and near the end of the second period a group of us asked to leave because we are cheering (making noise, standing up when the team shoots or close calls) - yeah fuk we were drinking, but we weren't harassing any of the tools that quietly sit there and nom nom while watching the game. Been tossed from a few games for cheering - did get free tickets to come back most times tho One other point you left out young pup is that there is a good portion of fans who are new to the country, and ottawa, that never followed hockey that have started to, so no need to put all those over 20 as had to cheer for another team.
All were very good and congrats to all, but 4 and 5, with 2 close behind Comment on today: I grew up a habs fan, but even as a child, when it was rumoured that the Colorado Rockies, may be coming to Ottawa, I would dream of playing for the home town, and being a star for Ottawa. I always felt that loyalty, just like I could not cheer for any other team other than Canada in Intenational competition. To each their own, but I have seen more migration from Habs fans to the Sens, vs Leaf fans to the Sens, and my theory on this is, I was lucky enough to see the Habs win it all 6 times in my earlier days, and even after they won it, it was bittersweet that the real parade and excitement was in Montreal, and they really could care less about the rest of the country. Now I have the option of cheering my own hometown, and just the excitement of the finals, had this city in a buzz I have never seen before... cant imagine what a Cup win would do to our lovely city.
