You are absolutely right Johne. I swear it's only you and me who really see the value of Condra. HE will be the one who takes over Chris Kelly's role. Well Kelly was our fourth line center last year wasn't he? But I agree Condra's no grinder - he's a responsible skill guy and has lots of upside. I think he's right in the mix of young guys fighting for the 2nd line (not this year necessarily). Kelly was NOT a 4th line centre. He played anywhere from first (when covering injuries) to third where he was slated.. behind Fisher.

Also, I think a lot of you don't appreciate how far good goaltending and coaching can take you. Case in point: Tampa and Pitt last year. Without Crosby or Malkin, the Penguins' top six looks pretty terrible, but they dominated the East in the second half and finished 4th or 5th. And Tampa went from a lottery team to being one game away from being the SCF. And don't bother mentioning Stamkos, because they finished 5th from the bottom 2 years ago when Stamkos got his 50 goal season. Again, not definitively saying that this is going to be us next year. Anderson has yet to play a full year here and Paul McLean hasn't coached one game yet. But if we stay clear of injuries and if any of the good attitude and work ethic that won a Calder Cup is left in the tank, we'll see what happens.

They won't tank. They have some really good players. The injury bug hurt them big time last year. Colorado is the team that will tank in the West. I say Edmonton finishes higher than they have in a few years. Colorado looks awful, but CAN'T tank because they don't have a first round pick anymore... I'd say that Dallas, Calgary and Edmonton are locks to be out of the playoff race in the west. The East is more open, but I think we'll see the Isles, Panthers and Jets at the bottom again. And the Senators will not tank. They didn't even tank last year when we were already out of the playoffs and the games meant nothing.

To Apostle: I respect your comments I have no problem with dissagreements amongst fans. My issue is that from one side of some fans mouths they say "we will be crap next year...dont sign anyone...we finish last and get a high draft pick" But many of these are not the people shelling out thousands of $$$ to support them through this! In fact I am a die hard, and I will be the first to say that last january was extremely hard to go to the games... cold nights, game on TV, crappy product... I do not want to go through that again, if we can help it. Goaltending will make a huge difference next year, so we have invested Our 3rd and 4th lines are set and strong, we have Spezza Alfie, a decent 2nd line centre can make us quite competitive IMO

I would have gone ballistic at the Kenopka signing if the plan was to play him on the first line but it isn't. I don't like the logjam we are getting in the bottom 6 but I expect a body or two to be gone from where we are now by season's end. Would I like another top 6 forward to be brought in - I guess that depends on who it is. But given what is available through FA and the trade market now compared to what I anticipate being available next year I would rather go with what we have and put pressure on Foligno and Regin to produce or to say to players like Greening and Condra you have a gilt edged chance to be a star on this team - show us what you can do.

Miguel, i think you are off base calling Tookie fickle. He's absolutely on the pessimistic side of the fence and you're clearly on the optimistic side. Good for you. I happen to disagree with you about the prospects for the sens next year, but that's cool because disagreements are a huge part of what being a sports fan is about. I just don't understand how saying something negative about the sens makes you less of a fan. What makes you less of a fan is saying something like we are going to suck and I won't watch them because we suck, I don't think he's ever come close to saying something like that. I do love the blinkers that being a sports fan occasionally produces but a dose of realism can't hurt. Could he be a little more positive? Does the Pope shit in the woods? At least we can argue our points sensibly and it would be nice if we could all be respectful of differing opinions and keep out of the playground. Now let's all have a group hug.

Tookie you are a fickle fan that angers me... you are precisely what I am complaining about, when people say "its ok we will finish last again next year and get another high draft pick" Yet when Jan hits, and we continue to struggle losing 1-0 games, you will be nowhere to be found near Scotiabank place supporting the team when only 13k show up. But dallars to donuts you will be here typing with LOUD fingers how right you were. I say our goaltending is tops... our D will be better, and our bottom 6 forwards will be amongst the strongest in the league. Lets get another 2nd line center, and we will compete... no not win the cup, but certainly compete, and give us real fans more of a reason to be there in Jan.

And to clarify, I don't mean tank the season. I want to watch the guys in the sens jerseys trying hard to win every single one of the 82 games. I didn't want us to tank last year and didn't agree with those that said we should. TRY AND WIN EVERY GAME - I just happen to believe that with the talent we have and how we stack up against the other teams in the league that we'll be in line for a lottery pick next year. The thing is finishing 1st out of 30 or 29th out of 30 doesn't change how much I support the team or how much I want them to win. Obviously I want the sens to win the Stanley Cup but if they don't, I'm not suddenly becoming a Boston or Chicago fan. Maybe it's coming from across the pond where every year the same 4 teams and nobody else have a chance of winning the Premiership but I'm OK with small victories. Winning is great and everything but I support the sens rain or shine.

I get the rebuilding year... and I get the Zonopka signing to a point. We are more than stacked on bottom 2 lines, the list is approx 9-12 players that can play on our bottom 4. We we the second lowest scoring team in the NHL last year, and we have really done nothing to change that. You want your young kids to grow and have success, but with a top 6 that we are projecting, 1-0 losses in Jan will be a very hard sell. And all the big talk of "its ok to lose so we can be better for the future" crap, will not put bums in the seats. And those who say they are ok, I am willing to bet will not be there in Jan to watch the 1-0 games. Dont break the bank, but I think we could get 2nd line players at a deal right now ie Brendon Morrison or Corey Stillman. Give our players a fighting chance to succeed, not the "we have no chance" mentality we have had the last couple of years!

[quote name="The Apostle"]I don't think that there is a player out there who is available or a likely trade target that makes us contenders next year. I think we'll be competitive in most games because we have a roster of players who will be playing hard next year. I might get a lot of grief for this but I see parallels for the sens with how the leafs have been recently. Hard working, hard nosed and a better team than the individual parts would have you believe. Where we trump the leafs is by having some bonafide stars already here in Spezza and Karlsson and we also have better prospects than they did. I don't think we are making the playoffs next year and I expect us to be in the bottom 3 of the conference but I'm really looking forward to the season and watching players give their all night in and night out. well said...

a rebuild isn't about losing to win later on. its about breading success through your organization instead of trades. the potential of our prospects is quite high right now and if it turns out right we can contend this coming season or possibly a few seasons ahead, there's no way of knowing. just like how we all thought sens would contend last season. but to say our organization is not in a win mode right now is illogical. you play to win the game...always

I definitely like the Kenopka signing, having a tough as nails fighter who's also a great faceoff man is a huge boost from the likes of Winchester and Shannon. As Sandy mentioned in an earlier post (as have I in previous blogs) I really think Hemsky would be a great fit. The two counter arguments I've read are 1.) he's injury prone and 2.) we have too many right wingers as it is. Yes Hemsky has been injury prone however that doesn't mean that'll carry over for the rest of his career. Were also not taking on a huge contract with a lot of term, there's only one year left on his deal at 4.5 mill. What's the risk in that? If we want to be competitive this year we NEED a top line player. Also the "too many right-wingers" comment is ridiculous. Butler and Alfie are both right-wingers and considering Butler is only 24 and Alfie is twenty-sev... oh wait, Alfie's 38 years old and most likely will retire in two years when his contract is up. So having Hemsky too replace him on the right side...

DaCosta is ona 2-way contract because it is an ENTRY LEVEL deal. Due to his age, he was only eligible for a 2 year entry level deal and can and will likely start the year in Bingo. The only reason he didn't play for bingo last year was because he was ineligible because of when he signed. It's a similar situation to Butler.....sign a College UFA and burn off the first year of the contract to save the club money and advance the player to RFA status sooner. Which in most cases means a cheaper second contract.

the move happened because Foster just didn't fit in with the Oil. He was never able to get his game going and the Oil's D-corps was woefully soft and lacked any kind of depth. Vandermeer moved on and that basically left the "grit" d man role to Peckham. They had no enforcer types and with Sutton they have a big hard hitting body on the back end. The additions of Sutton, Eager and Hordichuk provide insulation for the younger players and bring size and toughness to a team that needed it.

The Ottawa Senators are not winning the Stanley Cup this year. Hyping fans up about your prospects - especially the late picks - is just part of the business when you're a rebuilding hockey club. The team is much better off letting any of the borderline talent play another year in their developmental leagues where they will dominate and continue to grow as players. Looking at the current talent pools across the league the Sens could finish dead last this season. In a year where the draft is very deep that's not such a bad thing. The fact that Murray didn't go out and throw money at the Bergfors, Fleishmans, and other middling top six talents of the worlds suggests we're not looking to do much more than continue development this season. The team isn't in win now mode. If they're pleasantly successful we'll all cheer but last place would also be great for the franchise going forward.

Foligno played center this past season, plain and simple! And he centered the 2nd line between Michalek and Alfie in case u were wondering, and I'm not talking about just for 1 shift or 1 game. Im willing to bet you that he didn't log more than 120 minutes at center, and thats being generous. He's not a center, get it out of your mind that he is...he might've filled in when there was a guy who went down mid game, but he was never playing any game starting as a center. When Regin went down with his injury, Foligno did play centre for a length of time before Shannon filled in as centre on the 2nd line and Foligno was moved back to wing.

also i think konopka would be very attractive to a playoff bound team at the deadline if ottawa isnt likely to make the playoffs or re sign him next season...maybe could bring in another quality asset

I don't know if its because we're pretty much holding pat on the trade front but Christ, the number of players switching teams this year is incredible! It's probably taking everything for Murray not to go crazy and pull the trigger on a big trade. He's jonesing like a fat kid smelling trans fats...

Ya... i'm not saying you don't have a point there for sure but to give up young assets to get a guy with a HUGE amount of injury baggage... I just don't like it personally... not saying your take is way off or anything, just wouldn't really like the move, it's not a great fit IMO.

I'm not too worried about any sort of log jam on the 4th line. ZK isn't taking a spot any of our "future" deserves. Whoever our 4th line center is going to be next year can either play wing this year or play in Bingo. I'd be much more concerned if Murray signed a one-year top 6 guy that might take ice time from one of our blue-chippers.

Something people keep seeming to overlook in their line combinations is that both Smith and Konopka are Centers. And both are solid in face-off circle. I doubt they'll be on the same line. I think they have higher hopes for Smith than a 4th liner, like replacing Chris Kelly.
