Both will be on the Sens next season.. Greening is the Sens fastest skater - big, hard shot and pretty good defensively. Condra is defensively smart and sees the ice really well.
Murray just needs to get better at signing guys with a lowr cap hit by going longer term and the salary dropping off the last 2 years with perhaps an inflated first year. The deals haven't ben bad for us and if we had signed players like kuba, gonchar, kovalev, and anderson their contracts would be more cap friendly and easier to move when needed. front load the contracts murray!

I have absolutely no concern over the money we gave Phillips, the money is irrelevant for the next two years at least. My issue is with the 3rd year. I would prefer him off the books when the time comes and Karlsson, Rundblad and Cowen are hopefully established in the NHL. I think there will be better options than Phillips at 3.5 in two years time available that we won't be able to go for once the cap becomes an issue for this team again.

Interesting take. I personally would rate Filotov > Foligno > Regin, but I don't think that's a surprise. I do agree that Butler can probably create his own on most lines and the familiarity with Smith, Greening, Condra etc. would help too. I think Foligno could be the Holmstrom type if the coach wants him in that role, but I still think he will eventually find that scoring touch we are waiting for. I could see a nice increase from last year's 14 goals, to a healthy 20 this year, with a good 40-50pts.

Another thing I pray we see with the addition of MacL is the emergence of our own Holmstrom. I couldn't tell you the amount of times last year I yelled at my TV that there was noone infront of the net or driving to the net and low and behold when someone would give us a net presence, we would score. I don't think we have a Holmstrom on our roster, but I'd like to see that mentality in a multitude of our bigger bodied players.

@JABS I think Butler and Foligno both have an easier time playing in the bottom 6. Butler's familiarity with the other newcomers Foligno can play the role of a grinder Both Filatov and Regin to me need the other talent to up their own game and thrive off of other top 6 talent Unproven with Filatov, but that's what everyone is thinking/hoping Regin's playoff success with Spezza While Butler without a doubt benefits from Spezza, he does not have the ceiling that I see out of Filatov and Regin.

@Johne & whoever else wants to chime in So let's say Filatov, Butler, Regin, Foligno all prove they deserve top 6 minutes along with Spezza and Alfie, who gets it and who plays with Spezza in your opinion? Regin and Butler have both previously shown chemistry with Spezza, and we all hope Filatov will do the same. As was said, Foligno-Alfie-M ichalek was a good line last year. This is completely theory linecrafting, just for fun. Bottom line is it would be nice to have possibilities again.

Filatov-Spezza- Butler Greening-Regin- Michalek Foligno-Shannon -Alfie Winchester-Smit h-Neil Shannon played center for most of last season and stepped in big time when Spezza was injured. Foligno only played center for a few games and while I watched was all over the place and played more like a winger anyway. IMO it was a failed experiment.
I insist on Foligno being a center because that is what he played in junior and he's played pretty well with Michalek and Alfy in the past, so do you want Michalek or Alfy to play center? Also I'm shocked that most people have written off Regin so fast. I feel like I'm repeating myself, but last year was a down year for pretty much everyone, especially when you're lined up with Kovalev every game. It also looked like Regin and Clouston we're clashing. Look for a bounce back year for our great Dane.

Agreed we will not be Boston for a while, and Filatov should get a chance with Spezza during camp just to see if they have some instant chemistry. Inside I feel like we just gained a future superstar, but I'm just trying to also be somewhat realistic that he could fall short of expectations THIS year, like Foligno and especially Regin did last year. Long term though, I'd be amazed if he's not a pillar of our top 6. Definitely the difference comes down to how we'd balance/align our roster, but if you look at Detroit's example Datsyuk and Zetterberg often play on different lines 5 on 5, so I'm not sure the stache would put all eggs in 1 basket. But obviously I don't know, just guessing.

Fair enough, I just don't think we have the caliber of players that Boston has YET, now 2-3 years down the road if our prospects mature into their potential, then I think we can do that. But with a team starved for talent, I definitely believe in rolling our lines with similar talents 1) pure offense 2) two-way 3/4) Energy/Grinders lets not forget the added dimension of Karlsson/Rundbl ad, that's essentially a 7th forward on the ice. And with Anderson in net, there should be far less of a fear than what we had with Elliott in net that poor backchecking is an instant goal.

@Johne I don't take it as an insult, so no worries, but it is pretty basic coaching. Balance is more important in real life then in NHL11. We are trying to build the next Boston Bruins type complete roster, so why not start with complete lines from the beginning of the build? Our team is going to depend on being able to roll 4 lines. Having a top line that can't play defense would make it so easy for other teams to stack their top lines that can play defense against. Obviously if Filatov lights it up or connects well with Spezza he deserves to be on his line, but I also want to temper my expectations of Filatov off the bat ... he's still developing and a work in progress. It's more taking the safe approach to the roster as opposed to hoping best case scenario. Neither way is wrong, i think the coaches will just start with the safe approach and see who develops with who.

@JABS not as an insult cause I consider you pretty level headed, but why does every line need balance? This isnt NHL 11. I think you put Spezza/Butler/F ilatov on the ice at the same time because you intend on not playing defense at all during their shift. If you're worried about defense, put Phillips/Cowen/ Lee out there at the same time. While I do think balance can be important, 2 top 6 mediocre lines gets you zilch for goals. And fyi, Spezza and Michalek just don't work. Avoid them on the same line at all cost.

I think the lines will start like this (if no top 6 UFA): Michalek - Spezza - Butler Filatov - Foligno - Alfie Greening - Smith - Neil Regin - Winchester - Condra/Shannon/ ~Da Costa Phillips - Gonchar Cowen - Karlsson Rundblad - Lee/Carkner Anderson TBA Obviously chemistry will rule in the end, but I think this setup puts 1 developing offensive player (Butler, Filatov) on both of the 1st 2 lines along with 2 defensively responsible players (Spezza-Michale k, Alfie-Foligno). It also shows why BM thinks he may not need to sign that top 6 UFA anymore, though I think he'll still kick some tires there and try and get 1 more. Kuba gets traded, I just don't see how no cap floor teams would be interested. I wasn't on the Regin bandwagon last summer, Foligno is still my guy, but I'd be amazed if Regin has as bad of a year this year. I really expect a heck of an offseason to avoid a repeat.

He doesn't have the luxury of create a smoke and mirrors evaluation with his offense like Karlsson or others. He is solid, a great mentor and role model and came at a very fair price and term. He's a great member of the community as well. He may not be perfect, but given the situation the sens are in, he's ideal for this team. If any D shouldn't be here it's Kuba, then maybe Gonchar.
I think it's a gross over reaction to say there is a Phillips hate brigade going on. What's going on is the discussion of a 3 year contract given to a player who is on the decline. Phillips has not had one down year just like everybody else - Phillips has had at least 2 bad years and he wasn't that great the year before that. He has to bounce back big and he has to stop passing the puck to opposing centres who are standing in front of our net. I lost count of the number of times the camera would pan to Phillips after a goal against last year and he would be looking skywards or shaking his head. I'm looking forward to Phillips having a good year next year but it's more of a will be pleasantly surprised feeling than a solid expectation. His best years are behind him, that's not a reason to completely throw him under the bus, but it is a reason to be disappointed with the contract he was given.

I think Shannon might be the odd man out which is a shame because I do like him and he seems like a good team guy. But for the future of the sens it's more important that players like Greening and Condra get games than him.
I'm just not sure how good of a player Phillips is. I've seen & heard just about every game of his for the past 5 years or so. He seems to be one that puts the puck into his own net quiet often. I do realize accidents happen, but if this were his G License it be taken away. He seems to accomplish a lot of the success of his partners. Volchenkov stopped the puck and crushed the bodies, Phillips usually just watched and try to break up fights. I don't hate Phillips like I hate the leafs but who will it be this year he takes a much more deserving shut down D man's spot. who will he pair up with and make them do most of the work. if he gets his hitting game up. stop deflecting goals into his own net more then any other D man out there, the dust will be removed from my eyes and I beT i'll see some real value there.

We have room for a utility player like Shannon (might be a healthy scratch more often than not). Filatov-Spezza- Butler Michalek-Folign o-Alfy Greening-Regin- Condra Z Smith-Wincheste r-Neil I see a full roster there. Maybe Foligno/Regin being interchangeable . Any sort of injury would force us into a callup situation which I think our most NHL ready callups are likely on one way contracts in the bigs (Condra/Greenin g), but Shannon would easily slot into any line, I guess a player for considerations internally might be Daugavins.

I dont have any issues with Phillips not choosing to waive his NTC. He earned it with his play and during the negotiations of the contract. Would I have liked to have seen him move, absolutely but I'm not going to go all Leaf Fan/Sundin on him and throw a guy under the bus for honouring his contract. I think there were a whole bunch of off ice reasons for why Phillips was resigned and there is the fact that Murray doesn't like letting people walk out the door. Of players that have been in the organisation for a considerable length of time, Redden is the only one that springs to mind. The Phillips signing is made worse because of the defensive prospects we have and the potential logjam at the blueline which could inhibit progression of those prospects. If Kuba or Gonchar weren't around I'd be much happier with Phillips being here and truth be told, I'm not that pissed about it anyway.

I think a lot of the criticism of Murray was entirely justified. His free agency moves and some of the contracts he handed out were questionable at best. There were a couple of mitigating circumstances though, the guy who held his job before him had raped the organisation of future viable prospects and he has a megolamanic owner who thinks we have a god given right to win. However, since he has been given the clear instruction to rebuild the team (which happened at least a year later than it should have done) he has been on top form with barely a false move. I question the 3rd year of the Phillips deal but that's about it. It would be nice to be able to move Kuba, but he's only got himself to blame for that one.

I couldnt agree more. Tank now or forever hold your peace. They tanked and now they have a LW or RW to play with Duchene for the next 5-6 years. I'm looking at it as Anderson and Zibandjad for Landeskog and Elliot... I would take that deal any day, I really wanted Lando but Elliot is shit! I agree, you can't just say Anderson for Landeskog because we knew someone was coming in the draft. Considering we ended up with a true # 1 goalie who can actually win games on his own is key to the move and that gives Lehner more time to develop. While we would have liked 5th overall, getting Zibandjad is a bonus as long as he pans out. I remember reading all the messages awhile back about how bad Murray had been doing as GM, but take a look at what the future holds now. I say good job!

@ hassan Kopecky was traded from Chicago to Florida. It's too bad that Silfverberg will likely return to Sweden for another year. I thought there was a good chance he'd be competing for a spot with the Sens (or play in the AHL). BTW - what happened with MacT ... where did he end up?
