Your forgetting one thing, they beat us in the standings with about the same talent level in their lineup. So really, when your laughing at the Leafs, your laughing at the Sens. I dont get people who think the Sens are better than the Leafs, Im no Leaf fan but hell, even I can see they have a solid upcoming team and were better than us last year. Tookie, The Sens were the lowest scoring team in the NHL... and had terrible goaltending from Oct to Jan... and they still only had 6 less losses than the Leafs. I'm sure that would be much different had Leclaire not gotten injured -- AGAIN or Anderson was here from the start. Remember that 17 game stretch without Spezza when the Sens had just one win... that was the real difference right there.

I think DaCosta at least starts in Binghamton. It may be soon that the Sens have too many forward prospects... maybe next year some can be traded to a team in cap hell to upgrade to another top 6 forward... you never know... too many means great competition -- makes for a better team. If those young guys don't perform... someone else will take their place.

Winnipeg passed on him as well. So did the other 5 teams ahead of the Sens... if he was really that good.. someone in front would have taken him. Sens scouts have watched him a lot. They saw him in the playoffs in Gatineau as well.. where I guess Pageau outplayed him....from what I heard. But you don't know until about 3 yrs down the road. He will be a 3rd line centre on the Flyers and would have been a 2nd in Ottawa...

The Sens did great at this years draft, with the new coaching staff in place i'm confident we can get filatov to buy in and be a great two way player. Our coach has worked with lots of russian and foreign players that i have complete faith in him. We couldn't have done such a move with cloutson and i'm glad we are in a new era. Our picks look great and we took full advantage of this draft good job murray. things are looking up boys, lets go sens!

It isn't fair to label Lee a bust because specific players drafted after him are better. He has not lived up to the expectation of a 9th overall pick, I agree, however he isn't a bust (yet). He would be a bust if he couldn't even hold down a job, he proved last season that he is a reliable defenseman. That's like calling Phillips a bust. He certainly isn't the calibre of a first overall pick but that doesn't make him a bust.

Really? Yeah, really, is it that hard to believe, the Leafs of old are gone, no reason to hate them now, the rivalry is all but gone, the new kids on both teams couldnt care less about the battle of Ontario. And if you dont agree that the Leafs were actually fun to watch last year, then your just a jackass just trying to cause trouble. Many of the longtime posters on here even gave their opinion on the Leafs being a more exciting team. Anyone who knows hockey outside of the Sens can see this. If your looking at what the Sens will be like with all these kids, you dont have to look far, Leafs 2010... Tookie your such a leaf fan..... I will admit that they are getting better but no matter what, I will always HATE the leafs that's what a rivalry is

Tookie: throw Elliott on the leafs, put leading players in extreme physical pain ( spezza, fish and alfie) and I am very confident that the leafs would be in the sens position. Regardless, they both missed the playoffs, so I don't see the point in aspiring to be as good as the leafs ? Anyone else catch the discussion about fisher during the draft...complet e body surgery. I would like to see both teams meet in the playoffs again. Battle of Ontario needs a reboot!

Most of our D are either very offensive or very defensive, but no one particularly well-rounded.
HAHAHA. Very true and i love how bluntly you put it. Can we make the playoffs? Absolutely. We have a great mix of vets and kids. MR. ANDERSON in net. This guy is the real deal so stop worrying. For a guy who needed to boost his stats for f.a bargaining strength, to come to our struggling team, a team trading players left and right, and to put up 0.939sv% 2.05gaa over 18gp is proof he is that damn good. His technique is great ESPECIALLY his positioning, rebound control and his CONSISTENCY. Alfie with his back finally fixed will be healthier than in the last 2 years. Cowen and Rundblad hitting the scene and 2 of Kuba, Lee, Gonchar leaving it soon our defense will be better. Our pk was good last year, but now our pp will be MUCH better. DETAILS.

Edmonton, Colorado, Florida, NYI and Winnipeg all passed on Couturier for a reason. Forget his comparable to Jordan Stall. Couturier didnt work on his skating this year. He was lazy. He was arrogant. 7 teams passed on him for a reason. As for Zibanejad being like Fisher, dont worry about that either. Fisher had good hands and speed but was really a 3A type center. This guy has WAY more offensive skill, way better hands, to go along with a big and STRONG frame, still growing, strong skating and is physical every shift. His upside is his offensive side. Think 60-70points, 30 goals type upside. And with his endless desire to learn new things to improve and succeed (5 languages for example) i have no doubt with proper development he will become that level of scorer.

As much as I want the Sens to make the playoffs next year it will be a struggle. Boston, Wash, Pitts, Tampa. Those 4 are just about a lock. New Jersey with a healthy Parise and a good coach get in. Montreal probably will make it. So right there is 6 teams. I would have said before the 2 trades Philly was a lock but not so sure now. All depends on Bryzgalov. Sens will be in a fight with Carolina, Rangers, Leafs, Winnipeg for 1 playoff spot. But then again Sens finished 11 pts behind the Leafs - that's a 6 win difference for a team that was the lowest in goals scored in the league last season, & terrible goaltending from Oct - Jan. What really did the Sens in last year was the Spezza injury. They had 1 win in something like the 17 games he was out. Maybe anything can happen IF you have the goaltending. So there are pros they make it - and cons they don't - which is too many young players especially on D.

I so agree we are way better than last year and we are just getting warmed up. Filatov Spezza Butler Anderson Rundblad Cowen Karlsson a healthy Alfie and all the other young talent we have. The only line that needs some tweaking is our second line, that and some more purging. It may be a year of learning and mistakes but the year after Ziby Silverburg Petersson Noeson should all be ready to go. I know everyone always says players are not ready to play yet, heard the same thing about Butler before he came up. Lets not forget the Blackhawks players were all a bunch of young no names at one time, they did not win the cup with a bunch of old farts so called mentoring them. I was in the arena in Chicago when they were down 5-0 playing Calgary, lots of people left the arena as it was a total blow out, Chicago came back and won the game 6-5 never underestimate all go no quit something to prove young talent.

According to capgeek, we're about 4 million from the cap floor right now. That's without a backup, ELC's for Cowen and Rundblad (at least one will make the team) and only 10 forwards (not including Filatov). Don't expect Murray to spend 20 million on those 5 positions. It would be nice to land Laich, but with his skill he's going to be asking to term and I can't see him being in our long term future with the quality of players we got this weekend. I'm hoping that Murray only makes minor tweaks on July 1. I've said before that a versatile guy like Shannon is valuable because we really don't know if any of our prospects are ready to make the jump this season. Max Talbot is another guy who can fill a number of roles if called upon. He's still young, but has the experience of two trips to the cup final. Really gritty guy that I'm sure would play well with Zach Smith.

Rundblad and Cowen will make this team - Alfie will be 100% + we'll limit his minutes(no more penalty kills please). + we Have Anderson in nets.
Rundbladsson I agree that the Sens are well on their way, but please, when you trade 5+ core players from a roster for draft picks, it's called a rebuild. But you're bang on with Mr. Anderson. If he can play the way he did the latter part of the season I think we have a chance to be competitive for a playoff spot. The problem with the latter 18 games was that even with Mr. Anderson, we only scored a couple of goals a night on average, and won mostly by 1 or 2. Now a win is a win, but surely you need more goals to be successful. That being said, I think the Sens can be successful if: a) Anderson plays like he can b) The top 6 stays healthy and produces c) Our powerplay improves. I think all these are very attainable. The focus should be getting the top 6 a tad better. We just need that one guy to spark either besides Spezza and Butler or behind Spezz. Big Z?

Pulled this right of the HFboards thread on Filatov. Pretty interesting if you ask me. "Semin didn't dominate by any stretch when he first came to NA. he got an extra year in russia which filatov didn't get because columbus has no idea how to handle young players properly. semin came over and struggled with 22pts in 52 games he was then sent to portland and refused to report which resulted in washington suspending him. he then went and played two more seasons in russia before coming back at the age of 23 and having a breakout year. so no tuna he didn't dominate the moment he stepped on an NHL ice surface. i actually see filatov as having a better attitude, at least he actually went to the minors and didn't bolt for Russia."

Some of you people are hilarious in thinking that this is going to be another year where we don't make the playoffs, another year where we are sure to get another high pick. I shouldn't have to reitterate this. Ottawa didn't REBUILD they RETOOLED, had they traded Spezza it would have been a rebuild. Give yourselvesa a good face palm and make it a HARD one, might knock some sense in your collective heads. Were're sure to have an NHL calibre line-up, obviously opening night in Detroit. Take a second to ponder what Andy did with with half a baby Sens line-up in front of him during his 18 games. http://senators.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8467950 See that shit, 939 save%, G.A.A Just over 2. Now imagine what he can do with a full NHL line-up and a coach who knows what the fuck he's doing, Alfie who will be at 100%, something that hasn't happened in almost 2 years. Spezza who is peaking and looking to be right in his prime & Rundblad Nuff said

Lets be honest here guys Filatov is not the first young player to butt heads with Hitchcock. He's never been a very good coach with young stars. It also doesn't help to have an agent in your ear every two seconds about how much of a star you are and how in Russia you'll be respected instead of demoted whilst making 50x the money you would in the AHL. Filatov is not entirely without blame. He probably does have some entitlement issues that he needed to work through and grow up. I'm willing to let that slide as long as he comes to the rink every day to work. Just like Brian Lee he needs the opportunity to practice with and play with NHL pros every day. Focus on building up his confidence in his strengths and work on his deficiencies as he matures. Spezza went through the same thing with Jacques Martin. You have to let a player do what they do best not just beat them down because they aren't what you want them to be right away.

http://senators.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=567327 "I just talked to him and he’s very excited about getting a chance (in Ottawa)," said Murray. "He really felt that he needed a fresh start ... He’s a great kid. He’s a guy that has high-end skill that wants to be an NHL player, (a player) that’s had a big offer from the KHL and decided he wants to be an NHL player instead. It’s a chance for us to acquire something for a third-round pick that otherwise you couldn’t get."
I'm pretty sure with Jeff Carter signing that 11 yr contract he was set to stay in Philly. Do you think he may be a little upset with the trade. Probably blindsided him. Question is, once his no-trade kicks in, and if things don't go well in Columbus... will he pull a Heatley? 11 yrs in a place you are not happy, is not something a player would be happy with. He will be playing with Rick Nash so chances are they will be a good tandem... but you never know. He went from a contender to a pretender.... how happy is he?

Lets face the facts in Columbus, outside of Rick Nash they haven't got much to show. Nash did all that by himself, some players can do that, just take over a game without teammates, but sometimes you have players that need a counterpart to maximize their production and I think that is exactly what Filatov was missing. Murray wouldn't have even given up a 3rd round pick for him if he didn't think there was a good shot of it working with MacL's offense and the rest of the team. I can't wait to see this kid in action.

Let's say -- suppose Columbus drafted Karlsson back in 2008. A great offensive defenseman struggling with defense. How do you think Karlsson would do under Hitchcock and his defensive system? Do you think it would be the same result -- 3 yrs later them trading Karlsson because he was a bust? It's all about developing and teaching young players. Let them play to their strengths. Don't try to turn them into something they are not. Find a way to make their skills work to your system. PATIENCE -- something this kid never had in Columbus..

So what you are saying is the coaching staff & management rushing an 18 yr old into the league had nothing to do with it. A coach that is not patience with young players. Maybe he is the type of player that needs guidance more than a kick in the ass. I've also lost respect for Umberger. He may not have liked Filatov but to Twitter that he is glad the team got a 3rd round pick & that their team is now better. CLASSLESS.
I can only think positive things about Filatov. He makes the team and lights up the lamp with Spezza or he goes down to Binghamton and finds his wheels playing with a bunch of prospects under KK's guidance and then is reinserted with Spezza when he starts to dominate the AHL. I just don't see this kid being a bust unless he already has his heart set on the KHL, but with an opportunity to play on the top line and be a star in this league, I think that overshadows KHL dreams. Attitude and effort level can be adjusted, but the raw skill this kid possesses makes the possibilities endless.

The more I've pondered the Filatov deal, the more I'm excited about the possibilities for offensive production. With mobile defense like Karlsson and Rundblad retrieving and making quick outlet passes, Filatov needs only to backcheck into a support position to take a pass and head for neutral ice on the attack. Speed and hands that make the idea of playing with Spezza pretty intriguing. We know we're not getting a player committed to coming back hard on the backcheck consistently, or - and especially - making opposition forwards work overly hard along the boards. Coaches can and will work around an offensive player's weaknesses through line combinations and match-ups if the potential for offense outweighs the risk (any sustained pressure in the defensive zone could get ugly). If he can gain some confidence through production and feel like he belongs and is valued (which he didn't have previously) he may in fact be our steal of the draft.

@ Sandy I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Filatov made his way to the third line, as in they attempted to place him higher, then he 'earned' a demotion. I feel like Filatov working in Ottawa is 50/50 and considering his talent, that's well worth the third rounder. Seems like even his detractors in this comments section are all willing to part with a 3rd rounder given his amazing skills. Still, I'm not holding my breath Re: Lee - really don't think we should trade him, Michalek or Foligno, who seem to all be coming up regularly as expendable. I feel like if any of those three have a bad year in 2011-12, THEN we can look for a team to take a chance on them. @ Tyrant.
That's why he spent less than one season there. He got almost as many points in Carolina at the end of the season (15 pts in 17 games) as he did in his 63 games in Edmonton (27 points). It wasn't working out and he was glad to go "home". Erik Cole was not happy to be traded back to Carolina. If he wasn't happy being traded back to Carolina ... Why the heck would he sign a 2-year deal with them in the summer of 2009. Granted I've never talk to the guy to ask him personally, but I can confidently assume that if he wasn't happy about going back to the Canes ... he would have gone somewhere else when he became a UFA. If you have some evidence to the contrary ... I'd love to see it. Erik Cole wanted to stay in Edmoton.

I'm excited for it... our first look at Rundblad.. and hopefully Murray can get Filatov to come over as well -- and all the young guys Sens drafted this year. Filatov must have such a relief to come to a team that will actually give him a chance to show his skill. From some other sites comments I have read...the fans in Columbus did not have much love for this kid. You really have to feel for him. In a foreign country... not liked by your team management and coaching staff and the fans. How can anyone succeed in that 'uncomfortable' environment. I'm really hoping he can have success with the Sens... then show Columbus what it really takes to develop players.

@Dork I've brought that up in the past. There is a forum for them to do it but most prefer to just dump their thoughts in the comment section. The point from my perspective is simple. People often post links to interesting articles in the comment section. There are also people who toss out little golden nuggets of information about the team I might not find anywhere else. Having people post random rosters and fantasy GM trades that will never come to fruition clutters the comment section and makes it more difficult to read the information I'm actually interested in finding. Personally I'd like to see SC put a ban on all trade proposals and "my sens roster" but that'd be so much work moderating and its unfair to ask him to use his time that way. Plus people come here to kill time and talk hockey and some people really enjoy that stuff so I guess we should just live with it.

Am I the only one who thinks we should have a separate section for all of these, "here's my Ottawa team for next year...". Am I the only one who doesn't care an thinks they're all useless. I try to skip over them but they take up a lot of room. Also, it would probably be nice for all the people who enjoy that to have a specific section where they can contrast/compar e with other fans. It would be a win/win situation. (Might I also suggest we're not going after Richards and we're certainly not getting Richards and Gaborik, although it is funny to see them on someone's fantasy roster without us giving up anything).

I expect that the Murrays will try to sign one of the following UFAs: Eric Belanger - C Simon Gagne - LW Jussi Jokinen - LW/C Brooks Laich - LW/C Ville Leino - LW/RW Marty Reasoner - C Maxime Talbot - LW/C I think the rest of the Sens roster will stay as it is and the kids will be given a chance to step up. They may look to sign two UFAs if Filatov doesn't impress at the development camp (assuming he accepts the invite).
