I too am now thinking, with his credentials, that McLean will be the best fit. I think also that the Sens missed out on a good one with Kevin Dineen. McLean brings a lot of experience and Murray knows the guy. Chirp, would you say right now he is the front runner? He has been an asst coach under one of the best NHL head coaches. I still like Muller & Kleinendorst & Cunneyworth -- but this guy may have the edge. Question is -- is he a good communicator and teacher for the younger players. Possibly asst coaches can help with that teaching as well. Luke Richardson is well respected 'in the room'. Could someone like Kleinendorst be brought in as an asst under McLean? That could be a great team.

I hope that the coaching job goes to Paul Maclean. He is a champion at all levels he has coached at (head coach and assistant). Has coached 7 years under arguable the best NHL coach. He is the powerplay for Detriot, so hopefully he would be able to get Gonchar going. He has coached many years of junior and must have been good with the young guys has he won championships. He must also be good with veterans because he has the respect of all the players on the Wings. (Pretty much all veterans haha). No disrespect to the other options but he really is the best bet. MacT had one good season surrounded by a bunch of average seasons, Muller has less coaching ability, has been playing a highly defensive system, and to be honest a lot of his hype is based on his name along. Hopefully KK will stay in Bingo and Cameron would be an excellent assistant if giving the chance. So here is to hoping for Paul Maclean (Draft Landeskog! Or Couturier or Huberdeau)

A puckmoving defence with hard forechecking, speed and puck possession is what the fans want to see. Let's hope that type of system would work with our team.
The players under him in Edmonton were pretty vocal when he got fired... all of them seemed to indicate that they hated playing for him As mentioned, it wasn't just Penner that hated MacTavish. I remember hearing that a large contingent of players couldn't stand the guy as well. People always point to the year Edmonton went to the finals as proof of MacTavish's coaching skills. I implore you to check out the rest of his playoff stats... I believe he only made it one other year, and didn't make it out of the first round that year. I just can't see him being good for our young players, let alone any of our players.

His abilities would only make the young guns that much better before Hitting the bigs.' As for MacT, to much hate on for someone waa never viven much to work with. At the end some tunsome tuned him out. It happens, heck look what j martin did for this team and he got tuned out. Hacing spent timemin edmonton and having oiler friends MacT isn't a bad coach. His time was just up. As for Erixon he would be nice but cant see it happening. Calgary needs the prospects so he will be signed. What I remember of those Edmonton teams was that they were exciting to watch. We have 2-3 years to get to where we want to be, i think Mactavish would be great. Seems astute to me on the TSN panel.
Not that I'm saying MacTavish is the right pick or the wrong pick, because I don't know enough about his coaching skills or style, but using comments like the one in post #31 from Dustin Penner is hardly a good reason to think MacT doesn't know what he's doing. Last time I checked, the Oilers and Penner sucked with MacT, then they sucked with Quinn and Penner, and then they sucked with Renney and Penner. I don't know if the coach is to blame in the Oilers situation. As for KK, he's fine with me. If you're a good coach, you're a good coach, and I don't personally give a rat's ass where you got your experience. All that said, I do think the Senators would benefit from having a coach that has had NHL PLAYER experience, because he's in a better position to relate to the team in my opinion because he's been through the grind as well. So, MacT, Cunneyworth, Muller, they're all fine with me.

"He joined the organization in 2000–2001 as an assistant coach of the New Jersey Devils under Larry Robinson.[1]" - Not exactly a bad guy to learn from for KK. Like it or not Tookie he's paid his dues. I was originally on the side of wanting a guy with considerable NHL level experience but given the ability this guy has shown in building rapport with his players I think he's probably earned a shot. The big problem is if Ottawa doesn't give him a chance someone else probably will. Montreal wasn't happy about losing Guy Boucher and for good reason. We don't have a Jacques Martin in Ottawa and we're not expected to be a playoff team next year. We have less to lose giving KK the chance than most other teams in the league.

"Kurt Kleinendorst (born December 31, 1960 (age 50) in Grand Rapids, Minnesota) is the current head coach of the AHL ice hockey team Binghamton Senators.[1] He previously coached the Under-18 team of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and the Lowell Devils, the AHL affiliate of the New Jersey Devils. He also served as an assistant coach and later a scout for the Devils" Straight from Wiki. New Jersey isn't exactly a mickey mouse organization and he's already spent time in the NHL as an assistant coach. What KK really has going for him is the ability to build relationships with his players and get the most out of them. That's something important to find in a coach and particularly in Ottawa with a young team + a team that has struggled to find a coach they can really connect with on a personal level.

Yet your vote is for Muller who has never even been a head coach... So basically Your saying that you think Muller bc he was an assistant coach for a couple years in Montreal for a couple years deserves a shot but a guy who has years of head coaching experience and has guided a young team many didn't even predict to make the playoffs to the calder cup final, and a team full of young guys who will soon be in Ottawa hasn't earned a shot? I just think that rationale is ridiculous. If the veterans on the team elected not to give the coach respect right off the bat simply bc he never played in the NHL, maybe we need new vets, not a new coach. There's no way our veteran players like Alfie Spezz and Phillly would not have respect for Kleinendorst after what he's done in Bingo

@Tookie - You seem to forget that the average tenure for an nhl coach is about 2 years. BM's record is not that far off from the norm, and he still excels in other facets. You get 1 call right (missing the playoffs) and your reasoning wasn't even correct. You've really gone overboard with thinking you are smarter than the average fan just because of 1 right prediction. I hope your optimism can be found over the summer! @Chirp - MacT is a class guy, but he lost the room in Edmonton and a lot of the players hated playing for him. He reminds me a lot of a Torts type as he's great while the players buy into it, but his shelf life as a coach on 1 team is very limited.

Apparently Tim Erixon, prospect of the Calgary Flames has yet to sign his ELC. He was drafted in 2009. From what I have read (on GM Hockey) he has until 5:00 pm either today or tomorrow to sign. If not signed by that date he can re-enter the draft. Now IF he is not signed and he re-enters the draft... does he go in the top 10? How high would he be ranked? Top 5? All reports indicate he is a very good young defenseman... who has at times played as a partner to David Rundblad. Discussions?

It's about communication and teaching skills along with coaching experience that Murray will be looking for. The asst coaches will be interesting as well.. they need two of them. Kevin Dineen would have been good in Ottawa.... he will be good in Florida. Murray had better hurry... the good ones could be gone by the time his decision has been made. 5 teams looking for coaches I believe? I live in Edmonton, most of my friends are Oilers fans and most of them have nothing but good things to say about him (he did bring an average Oilers team all the way to the final after all). I'm not saying he would be a perfect fit however -- his downfall here was the rift he seemed to create between himself and the younger players. But I suspect he has learned from his mistakes and is a better coach now than before. Plus he gives the funniest post-game press conferences in the League;) We could do a lot worse than MacT.

Indeed.... welcome back to the NHL Winnipeg. Different league now. More competitive, no more 70 cent Cdn $ and a salary cap to keep cost certainty... so rich teams like the Leafs & Rangers can't buy their Cup. As for the coach... KK would be a good choice. He knows the young prospects.. with at least 5 of them on the O-Sens next season. He appears to be a different person than Clouston. He also has had more AHL experience and 1 yr asst coach in NJ -- under the great Larry Robinson. Not a lot but better than nothing. Kirk Muller, Randy Cunneyworth or Kevin Dineen -- one of those would be my 1st choice... by there is nothing wrong with KK. If he is not appointed coach in Ottawa -- then after next season some other NHL team will take him... BOOK IT. No more re-cycled NHL head coaches please. Go younger but with experience.

KK shouldnt get the SENS HC job, thats what Murray did with Clouston, brought him up too fast. This is Murray's job on the line, if he has to fire another coach within the year, I think he's a goner. Cant keep going this way... Thats why I think it will be either Mac T *sigh* or Muller. The Sens never had a guy that can take over the room, we need that kind of coach, the kind of coach that Spezza and Alfie and the vets still look up too. My vote goes for Muller, he was a legendary player and is respected all over the League, this is the Sens shot at landing a coach that can command the room & bench.

Would be an interesting way to kick that off, that's for sure. The Senate Reform video is up on the home page. Have heard that's going to be a lot of stuff leading up to the draft. Behind the scenes type stuff. Can't confirm that though. Anyone heard anything more?

I hope you are correct chirp. Even if Cameron was a strong contender he would come in with he baggage of almost being a political type appointment with Mr. Melnyks' fingerprints all over it. It would suggest a special relationship with the owner that isn't healthy for a GM. Exactly the baggage the Sens don't need as they get back on track as an organization.

Being from Winnipeg, this upcoming season is going to be just awful on me, with the Jets(whatever) being in the East. Sens v Jets games are going to be the death of me. Both emotionally, and financially. I won't know who to cheer for!
