Game Day- Lehner Starts vs Bruins

After a dramatic comeback against the New York Islanders on Tuesday night, the Ottawa Senators look to carry that momentum over on home ice.

The Sens have posted an extremely impressive 10-1-3 record at Scotiabank Place this season and will be hoping for more of the same as they begin a stretch that will see them play five straight games on home ice.  It starts tonight as the Senators go toe to toe with the Boston Bruins.

Tonight marks the third meeting of the season between the two teams.

Boston has won both games in the season series but on both occasions the Sens were able to grab a point from a powerful Bruins team.  Robin Lehner was the starter in both those games and will get the nod again tonight.

The Bruins are coming off a rare loss as they fell to the Jets on Tuesday night.  Ottawa trails the Bruins by just three points in the race for home ice advantage but Boston does have a couple games in hand.  The two teams will meet two more times after tonight.

Head Coach Paul MacLean will make one change ahead of this one.  Marc Methot took the morning skate but will not play.  The Coach listed him as probable for Saturday's game against Tampa Bay.  With Methot out, Mike Lundin draws back in.

Here is how the Senators are expected to line up

Latendresse-Smith-Alfredsson
Greening-Turris-Silfverberg
Condra-Zibanejad-Neil
Kassian-Regin-O'Brien

Wiercioch-Gonchar
Phillips-Benoit
Lundin-Gryba

Puck drop is just after 7:30 PM with the game available on Sportsnet and on the radio at Team 1200.

Well were gonna see of PW46 can pass his first test as top D pairing. Not really crucial that he does or doesnt as he's still adjusting and learning but wouldnt be great if he scored again....like a clutch goal.

Which D line do you think plays vs Lucic and Horton?

Cant wait.

just wondering what are the thoughts about trading Gonchar at the deadline

all Kidding aside this D will have its work cut out for them, and for all the Gonchar lovers out there this will be a very true test tonight!

Even with Lehner standing on his head we will be in for a tough match.

Mind you we played them very well last week and only lost in the shootout, but that was with Methot,

Go Sens Go!!!

Dont take it as negative, thats how things get blown out of proportion. I think its only because he has struggled more than he has been good, which is normal. I think a lesser role for him for now is a good thing. Just like we did with Turris when he was struggling.

Gryba has been great for what he should be expected to do. Learn the NHL game, learn when to use his stick and when to use his body, learn the speed of the game

Similarly, Cowen had to do the same thing last year

Only difference is that Cowen got to do it playing 10-14 min a game and lots of PK time, where as Gryba is being thrust into a 15-18 min game role which is why we are seeing mental errors

Can't blame the guy he is working his tail off, but errors and mistakes are inevitable

I mentioned it here yesterday but I would love for Ottawa to pick up Leopold for the stretch run, he can log big minutes, play every situation and is a UFA. Buffalo sucks anyways

And as always Douglas Murray or Ladislav Smid would be great alternatives should those teams fall out of the playoff picture

Just watched TSN top ten and it showcased Bobby Orr moments, watching him skate reminds me of a special player that plays for Ottawa. Imagine King Karl someday being recognized like the great Bobby Orr. Can't wait to see what this kid will do for the Sens and the NHL.

King Karl can't be compared to the great Bobby until he starts winning the scoring title and accumulate the Norris trophees.

We all know he is out of this world good and will keep on improving. We are extremely lucky to have him.

Hope he's ahead of his rehab program and will surprise us with a comeback in the playoffs. Hey, we are allowed to dream, right?

I know they cant be compared, not yet anyway haha. But watching how Orr skates down the ice, end to end while making it look easy, just looks quite similar to how Karlsson was playing the game this season. Very Exciting!

LOKI then?

One of the world's major Trickster Gods, in his early days LOKI was a rascal; crafty, sneaky, silly and malicious — a Loki The Lad. The son of two giants, LAUFEY and FARBAUTI, he was so outrageously mischievous that he even sneaked his way into becoming a God. Gryba's mistakes are like a goalie's mistakes. They are VERY noticeable.

Especially when he makes two mistakes on the same play (as he did for the Islanders 2nd goal.

However I think he's been steady enough I just haven't been blown away as some people seem to have been.

Next year i still think he's the prime candidate to start the season in Bingo (assuming everybody is healthy - which is an hilarious assumption to make for the sens at the moment)

Lundin comes in and we'll see Wiercioch in a top pairing with Gonchar. I'm happy they are splitting the load with both rookies between Gonchar and Phillips.

So we are playing the mighty Bruins. Why on earth we haven't beat them in the last... who knows how many games? We've fought, we've played hard and the last 2 games are a testament to that. Considering how much adversity this young Sens squad has faced, and with Methot nopw out, if there was a game to put Money on the Sens winning (due to odds and what the return would get you) I'd put it on this game.

This pesky Sens team will come out SO hard for this game. Our forwards will support our D, our D will support Lehner, and we'll continue to see some solid shutdown minutes when needed. The main reason I'm confident in this game, because we've been finding ways to score. We've went from 1 to 2 a game, to 3 to 4. And in the last 3 games, we've scored 13. While we will miss the minutes Methot plays, he wasn't part of the increased scoring, so being out of the lineup shouldn't affect that category too much. We will win this game by 2, no OT, no shootout.

I guess I may be in the minority but I like the way Gryba has played. Has he made mistakes, most certainly, however, there is not one d-man on the Sens who hasn't, including EK65.

Actually a lot of the talk on here reminds me of how people used to talk about Redden in his rookie year. Wasn't on blogs back then but on the postgame shows people were worried about Redden when he was on the ice, he committed too many turnovers, yada, yada, yada.

Gryba like Redden plays 20+ minutes a game and is used in all situations. Hopefully he'll have a similar career as Redden had. I know all of you Redden haters will enjoy this.

This team has been playing so well despite the serious injuries to it's top players.

But the Methot injury will really hurt them in D depth. Lundin has played a big 7 games this season.. I'm not expecting much from him.

Will be a good test for Weircioch tonight..

In order for the Sens to even get a point tonight.. it must be defense by committee...

Boston is missing players... 1 top 6 and 2 role players more or less.. They still have a very good defense.

It's Lehner time... he needs to be exceptional for the Sens to get any points tonight.

Going to the game, finally.. it's been 3 weeks.. seems like forever.

I'll believe Methot is back in a couple of games.. when he is back. Anderson was supposed to miss 3 or 4 games.. and he has been out for a month...

So anyway, big game tonight! Really hoping our recent goal scoring prowess can carry into tonight. A few goals against the Bruins can go a long way in this game.

Theres about 25 mins of Methot-man icetime to spread out into our Defence. I know Lundin draws in but hes not going to eat up alot of minutes I think. Hoping for big games from Weircoich, Benoit and Gryba. You gotta think Boston has taken notice of Gonchar's "Benjamin button" plays, so they will be all over the guy.

Another big team effort needed. And I think Kassian will get some good icetime tonight.

Remember when they said the same for Anderson? Andy was back on the ice with his equipment after a few days.

Would be great if it's minor but set backs can't be ignored.

And the last unofficial update I heard on Anderson a little less than a week ago, was not sounding good at all...

I think the way to look at this, if Ottawa was to ice an all-star starting line it would be:

Spezza - out
Michalek - out
Alfie - last man standing
EK - out
Method - out
Andersson - out

We are without our best player at each position. And we roll on.

In PMAC we believe.

It's very true, every time one of these guys has gone down, I've had that sinking feeling in my gut, and every time, I've turned on the T.V. the next few games, and this team doesn't miss a step. If our dream teams of the early 2000's, when we were chronically underachieving had had this attitude, we'd have 3 or 4 other cup banners hanging from the rafters at the bank.

The Sens are probably refusing to admit or tell us that its a high ankle sprain which is different than regular sprain. Take a look

High ankle sprains occur commonly in contact and cutting sports and have been a nuisance in the NHL for the past few years.

The most recent Flyer to suffer this injury was Michael Leighton, who was given an estimated time to recover of 8-10 weeks for his severe high ankle sprain late in the 2009-2010 season.

Other notables that have suffered this type of sprain include Sidney Crosby, T.J. Oshie, Ryan Miller, Marc-Andre Fleury, Max Talbot, Kristian Huselius and Milan Lucic. Of note, Oshie had a high ankle sprain in his rookie season and was out of the lineup for 14 games before attempting an early comeback, which resulted in an extra 10 game absence for a total of 24 games.

The high ankle sprain does not typically cause a great degree of local swelling or bruising and generally does not “look that bad.” Unfortunately, no type of bracing has been shown to treat or prevent these high ankle sprains.

Just watched today's Gameday Goodie on SensTV - Robin Lehner

Couple points:
He seems so much more mature. He talked about how he's still learning the NHL game but every year and every time he's been brought up, its getting easier and easier to adjust to the level of play.

He also seems extremely confident. In the past he used to complain about little things that may have caused a goal against him. Now he takes it in stride and says "I'm working on it". He knows he's good and knows he's very close to being a legit NHL goalie.

The best athletes in the world are the ones that continue to improve throughout their pro careers. So many seem to stop working once they've made it. The best however are never satisfied with their performance and keep busting their ass day in and day out. A couple names come to mind; Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, Steven Stamkos and....Robin Lehner??

The good thing about having injuries to top players is the opportunity for someone else to shine. So far, Gonchar have decided to take this team on his shoulder and he did it with a bang.

Tonight is Wiercioch to show what he can do. If he does well and I think he will, it will show how strong our future will be.

Look at Montreal last year, they were without Markhov and Gionta most of the season and they crap the bed. Lucky they had Price.

How about a Gordy Howe hat trick for Kassassination tonight. LOL

Dead on! A lot of the people including Yost only see the errors. It would be interesting how many posters actually have played major junior or semi pro hockey and have an understanding of the WHOLE game. Yes players really fuck up when you are only looking for mistakes they make.

Which D line do you think plays vs Lucic and Horton?

Cant wait.

I hope PW46 to see if he can handle Lucic and Horton.

I think there is a point where you are so tall that it is quite awkward to be a skater. The big Z is an exception, but to me I'd take Cowen and his physical dominance over Myers and his "playmaking" abilities.

If we go into the playoffs without Karlsson(which we know we are), I'd love to have Roy as our 3rd line center. smith can't produce enough points in that role. Plus in the face off circle he's been really struggling. He's a great 4LC in my book.

I dont even care that Anderson is out. Our goalies are not the problem. The way hes playing, I'd say Lehner is a top 10 goalie in the league. He keeps the team in the game very single night.

We need scoring! Roy is a solid player but I really don't think he would fit with our team, even if we needed a centre. We need a skilled sniping winger. I don't care who but that's what we need. Not a centre. We are absolutely loaded at centre. Infact it'll be a serious log jam once Spezza comes back which will be fairly soon.
Spezza
Turris (no, he will never be switched to the wing)
Smith
Zibanejad (will prob move to wing)
Regin
OBrien
And you people want to add a centre?? What??

Sorry but Anderson would have made those 2 saves tonight. I saw them both up close. They were tough ones but he's made similar saves in the past.

Don't get me wrong, I think that Lehner and Bishop have provided super service to this team. Sens would be in the crapper if it wasn't for them. But, at this point, they don't need solid goal tending, they need stellar goal tending. Vezina goal tending. Wake your little kids up from bed "you've gotta see this" goal tending. That's what Andy brings.

Since when was >.940 save % not stellar. Goalies are not the issue. Sens fans need to understand that teams can lose. We just won 3 in a row, everything is ok.

Boston just has our number. Very frustrating. For most of the game Ottawa had great possession and pressure against Boston. Can't win them all, but we need to find ways of beating that team. I really hope this isn't our first round match up.

And what is the deal with the no call on the lunatic Lucic during that whole scrum? Daugavins comes out with the penalty? Quite the bs call...as usual.

Lehner has been playing better than "good", especially against the Bruins. Keep in mind that Bishop and Lehner have played a combined 32 career NHL games! Considering how young they are and how few NHL games they've played, you could say they are playing stellar. Lots of goalies don't round out their game until they are in their mid-30's. Sorry man but you're way off base, our depth at the goalie position is the deepest we have on the team right now.

Anderson will play better but he's not going to win us many games if we only score one goal...

Makes sense only bcause Roy plays Centre, something we need. Roy is UFA something we like, Roy is from Rockland, something we look for

Also remember that I mentioned Roy's name about a month ago.

I still think stars resign him, I'd rather have ray Whitney personally but both of them are clutch performers.

The way the Bruins are playing, I wouldn't mind playing them in the first round. With Spezza and Michalek back, we can take them to 6-7 games and win.

Remember a few years back, Alfie got the same surgery Michalek got this week and Alfie was back after 2 weeks.

The Bruins were sleeping last night and the scrap in front of your net and the treatement we served on Krejci woke them up. Next time, let the bears in their hibernation, please.

And we tought Thomas had our number and now, since he left, Bruins are 6-0.

Michalek and jagr have played very well together during international tournaments. Great forward lines for playoffs / next year ( when people come back from injury and if alfie decides to play one more year,

Michalek Spezza Jagr
Lantendresse Turris Alfredsson
Greening Zibanejad Silfverburg
Condra/Daug Smith Neil

Just keep in mind that Lalime also had gaudy stats but always let 1 stinker that would break our hearts. (in the playoffs). Plus we wont win many games scoring 1 goal. Need goal support.

Seems to be Lehner MO right now. He needs to fix that quickly.

Not sure there would be 3:00 PP time a game to give him. Ottawa is currently 4th least in PP time / gm at 4:50/gm.

For reference MTL is leading the league with just over 7 minutes in PP time / gm.

Also, if you look at the PP - PK / gm, Ottawa is second worst with a -1:35 / gm. That means, on average we are short handed for over 1 and a half minutes more than we have are up EVERY SINGLE GAME.

Yet we are still in a playoff spot. Good thing we have the #2 PK in the league.

Fine for playoffs but I agree Jagr is too long in the tooth to play 1st line during the regular season - even with us rolling those four lines and spreading out ice time. Maybe Silfverberg plays some of his shifts?

I'd also put Condra with Zibanejad and Silfverberg and let Greening bang and crash with Smith and Neil - that line is incredible.

Jagr is light years ahead of Kovalev. And this is a guy that took what 5 years off from the NHL to play around in Russia and probably could have had 2000 points by now?

Jagr and Alfie together on the same team would be very interesting. And think about what that would do to the team morale, knowing a player of his calibre would even consider playing in a small Canadian market.

Newsflash: We only scored one goal on the team with the lowest goals against in the league. The sky is not falling!

In all our Boston matchups I haven't had the feeling of "Oh man these guys are out of our league". On any given night a Boston lead doesn't seem safe, but on the other hand our leads never seem enough either.

A playoff matchup between us would be very very tense as almost all games would be decided by one.

The Bruins don't score much, but they don't let in many goals either. Does this sound familiar?

Thats just pure speculation with no actual source

John Boruk of CSNPhilly.com believes that the Flyers should explore the trade market for 27-year-old defenceman Andrej Meszaros, who has one-year left on his contract after this season for $4 million.

Boruk goes on to state that there are a lot of teams that could use defensive help, like the Ottawa Senators, and Flyers rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers.

Lehner to start vs Tampa

I think this tells you all you need to know about Maclean and his opinion of Lehner vs Bishop

Lehner is his preference

I for one would be shocked if Bishop is not traded by the time the draft rolls around

Id say deadline day, but that all depends on the health of Anderson

Does anyone know why last week and this week the SENS aren't on CBC? As a Londoner I can't stop Bitching at the lack of television coverage especially on hockey night in Canada. Sportnet east is 9/10 black out. And CBC rather show some boring ass television program until 7

What is Bishop's current RFA/UFA status? If I remember correctly, he has to play 1 more game, at least 30 min?

TSN: Gonchar and Methot expected to play Saturday.

Since he may not feel right promoting it and I don't care what people think of me: if I'm not mistaken this Sunday at 4pm at Merivale Lanes is the fund raising event for Icysurfas' little girl and her need for custom eye wear. Show up and be a good neighbour, if you can make it.

He's played the required number of games. He is RFA.

I have to host my 9 year olds birthday party and can't make this but I'd be open to donating some money if you have any info on how to do so.

Chirp, perhaps you could add link or something for one of the loyal contributors?

good luck with the event Icy Surface, I'm sure you will have a tremendous turnout!

If we go into the playoffs without Karlsson(which we know we are), I'd love to have Roy as our 3rd line center. smith can't produce enough points in that role. Plus in the face off circle he's been really struggling. He's a great 4LC in my book.

Are you saying that because Smith lost the faceoff against Bergeron that led to the winning goal?

A 3rd line centre losing a faceoff against a a #1 centre.. one of the best in the NHL? Imagine that.

Proud of how this mostly AHL lineup played against the Bruins last night.

They gave the Bruins all they could handle and the Bruins barely beat them.

What would be the score if the Sens were healthy?

Watching the pre-game videos showing all the players.. it really struck me how much I miss seeing Karlsson on the ice and Spezza & Andy..

I want these guys back.. but it won't happen with Karlsson this season. Damn you Cooke.. I hope you get yours on April 22nd.

We had better hope at least one of Gonchar or Methot plays tomorrow. If neither are available.. the Sens will have to go with 5 D. There is no one to call up..

Lehner starts against Tampa.

Sandy you really need to stop using that excuse, the only one who will probably go back to the AHL next year is Gryba, all the rest have been in the NHL for 2-3-4 years now.

Silf and Zbad only played a handfull of AHL games.

Wiercioch is an NHL rookie.

We have a roster of NHL players, yes, many rookies but NHL rookies.

Well we were healthy last season and went 1-5 vs them...with Andy in nets + our top guns.

BUT I would want to play them in the playoffs. Beat them and your chances improve alot!

Sorry Sandy picking on you right now...

Smith is our best faceoff guy by far, he takes 90% of the defensive faceoffs and crucial ones in the off zone. 3rd line 1st line doesnt matter, fact is he is our best and Bergeron wiped the ice with his face all night! We're not a good faceoff team without Spezza.

Spezza 57%
Smith 51%

Turis 49%
Zib 47%
Obrien 46%
Regin 44%

So, no suspension for NASH for his hit last night. Not even a hearing.

Once again, the inconsistency seems awful. This looked worse than the Lupul hit.

I'm sure someone will explain why this wasn't.

Bergeron, Tookie, is one of, if not the best faceoff player in the NHL. Smith plays 3rd line centre. There is NO Spezza to fill that role as you said... And right now Smith is probably better than Turris on the faceoffs.. but he is no match for Bergeron..

Well Tookie, if it wasn't for the injuries Weircioch, Benoit & Gryba would be in the AHL along with probably Zibanejad.

Silfverberg would probably be the only one of the BSens players who would have been called up.

And yes calling Smith, Greening, Condra et al.. AHL is not entirely correct, however they are about 2 yrs removed from the AHL and not fully experienced in the NHL.. they all still have a lot to learn.

And compare what the Sens had in their lineup to what the Bruins had with 3 rookies.. with protected minutes in a very experienced lineup.. when the rookies on the Sens are front and centre for the most part with about 5 really experienced players... in Alfie, Neil, Gonchar, Phillips & Turris.

That is unbelievable that there is no suspension on that play.

I guess it does matter who you play for.

That was a worse hit than Perry's as well.. and even though Perry is a superstar he still got 4 games..

It has to be who they play for. What other reason can you give that this is let go.

The Tampa player didn't see him coming. He hit him from behind in the back of his head with his elbow -- looked like he left his feet as well. Everything they want to get out of the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9jZDEQ_a3Y&feature=player_embedded

If I'm a team with a player suspend on a less severe hit.. I'm onto Daly to find out why this NHL is so inconsistent.

Can someone on here explain to us why there would be no suspension on this hit? I just can't see it..
