Game Day- Afternoon Affair in Philly

After a gutsy effort in Boston on Thursday night, the Ottawa Senators continue their road swing with a stop at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

The Flyers have struggled early in the shortened season but are showing signs of life lately.  For Ottawa, it's the second game of five straight away from Scotiabank Place and the first of back to back afternoon affairs.  Ottawa will visit the New York Islanders tomorrow at 3:00 PM.

It has been a bit of an up and down start for the Flyers who are showing signs of turnings things around with Scott Hartnell back in the line up.

Claude Giroux is riding a six points game streak (4 G 8 A) and Jakub Voracek, leads the team in scoring with 24 pts in 22 games. That trio will give the Sens all they can handle this afternoon. Philly has won 4 of 6 and have scored a ton over that stretch.

Meanwhile the Senators continue to find ways to stay competitive despite missing some of their top players.

Ottawa has picked up at least a point in six straight and come into the afternoon affair with a six point lead on the Flyers in the Eastern Conference. With that said, the Senators are going to need to start scoring goals at some point. Ottawa is 27th in the league in goals scored and sure could use one from Kyle Turris or Zack Smith at some point.

No morning skate for the Sens today but yesterday MacLean indicated that Mike Lundin will draw back into the line up in the place of Andre Benoit. Here is how the Sens are expected to line up.

Silfverberg-Turris-Alfredsson
Greening-Zibanejad-Condra
Dziurzynski-Smith-Neil
Daugavins-Regin-O'Brien

Methot-Gryba
Wiercioch-Gonchar
Lundin-Phillips

Ben Bishop gets the start in the Ottawa goal while the Flyers are expected to go with the always entertaining Ilya Bryzgalov.

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 12:00 PM with the game available on Sportsnet and on the radio at the Team 1200.

Should be an interesting game. Philly can be absolutely explosive offensively but they can't defend for their lives and we all know Bryzzy is good for at least one or two bad goals against per game.

Hopefully the Sens can at least grab another point in this one.

Prediction: 4-3 Sens! Goals by Alfie, Turris, Phillips, and Zibanejad!

I agree. Turris is a very good 2C. Because of injuries PMac has had to suffle everybody around and make Turris a 1C in Spezza's spot. Our entire team including Turris and PMac are doing a terrific job with mostly BSens team. Love these guys!!!!

You know, for te most part, the commentary is usually good by the Ottawa team but lately, it's been painful. The duo taking the term "colour" commenting to new levels by discussing lightsaber colours for at least two minutes while the game is being played. Sometimes these guy just ramble an ramble and u can't help but tune them out eventually. They completely miss major plays and chances in favour of small talk. It's getting old.

I don't care who you're missing. It's all NHL players out there. They should be able to enter the zone and maintain possession while creating chances. It is 5 on 4 after all

Creating more chances 5 on 5 than on the PP is a tad embarrassing

Can you imagine if it wasn,t Lundin that got run over, but Turris or Alfie?

The hockey you are watching right now is tame compared to what is allowed in the playoffs, and we are not prepared.

If you think we are tough enough you are fooling yourself, and our young talent may end up paying the price

The Phillips-Goncha r pairing is always one that gets torched and its back together due to Lundin's injury. As much as it sucks to see someone get injured, this should pretty much take the option of playing Lundin again and make it an easy decision always between Benoit and Borocop.

Nashville, Devils, Yotes, Blues, Bruins are all somewhat low scoring teams that play a tight defensive game and are good at it... The goals will come, but it's great that these guys are learning solid D.

I thought both of the penalties on Smith we're fucking horrible calls by the ref. How he managed to be the only one to get a penalty in front of the bench I have no idea. He gave Rinaldo one shove.

I really don't see how Alfie ended up with a 5min for that cross check either, it didn't look like it deserved it. If he ends up with a suspension i'd be pretty upset.

Chris Phillips needs to grow a set and stand up for himself. Alfie comes in to stand up for him and then Fedotenko starts giving it to Phillips against the boards and he doesn't fight back at all. Stop being a pussy, especially when your captain is in there trying to stand up for you.

I realize you are a Sens fan so I'll be levelheaded about this.

That 'rumor' is obviously pretty dumb.

We are 5-1-1 the past seven games and while missing all our key players. Both backups when called upon have been lights out.

If we were going to make moves that would probably help the team finish *lower* this season we would have done that long ago. Whoever else said it is 'too late' is right.

And this is coming from a guy who suggested it 'might' be a smart time to deal Anderson back when Spezz and EK65 went down. I am still not opposed to dealing Anderson for the right price either. You can argue that is would be stupid to ever trade away the best goalie in the league or you could argue we have 3 great ones and the future is now so sell high!

Guys I missed most of the game.

Saw the Lundin hit that was suspension worthy.

Now I didn't see the Alfie hit on Rinaldo. Was it a retaliation or was it just frustration. Was Rinaldo hurt on the play?

What happened to Regin?

What a fucking fickle fan base in Ottawa. Last week this team was the best now they lose a game and they are picked apart? Turris, Smith stink. The rookies are awful they make too many mistakes. Gee imagine rookies making mistakes. It's downright disgusting to me.

What to pick apart on this team is the PP. Cameron is in charge of that IMO he is doing an awful job.

Guys this team wasn't going to keep on winning & winning with what they are missing in the lineup.

Other teams shut down Alfie, Turris & Silfverberg & you don't have much else. The opposition knows this.

You can't win many games when you can't score.. There is no scoring depth left they are all injured.

Smartest thing I've heard all day Sandy, I'm embarrassed for Ottawa sometimes.

Regin just took a shot to the foot but came back later in the game.

This team is young and when they want they play pretty high energy. We just need a ~5% course correction on numerous fronts, from hitting to toughness to shot quickness to zone clearing.

I really don't care how this season plays out, I would just like to see Murray make a good hockey trade that will help us down the line. No use having 3 goalies when Anderson gets back. trade the one that brings the best return. Plus, lets trade some bodies and let some of the younger guys like Grant play. He's an upgrade on some of the guys already here. No benefit in having him sit. I'm admiring this teams effort but scoring help is needed, as long as we look at it long term. No rentals or old guys(like Briere- no need for that now).

Phillips needed to beat the shit out of Fedetenko and instead he kept saying please stop punching me in he face.

Alfie and Daug were really the only two players that came ready to stand up to Philly. When your smallest forward and your 41 year old captain are your physical presence it's gut check time.

It wasn't about the two points it was about playing for one another.

We have better options now, he should've been traded when Chicago was inquiring but now what can we get for him. No - you're INSANE.

Every one of Ottawa's young players is fighting for a BIG NHL contract.
They'll be playing all out for the rest of the season.

Anderson has been playing like a TOP level goalie and has a cap friendly contract for the next 2 years.

Every player can be traded but the price for Anderson would be VERY high.

I think Stash has them on a short leash, there is a lot to be said for discipline. That being said there is a line that gets crossed and the guys should have responded tonight and a few other times the past two weeks also. They will learn.

At least Bishop stood up for himself in nets, gave that fruit loop a nice cross check across the chest. I hate Philly and one of the highlights of my life was that massive melee with them several years ago. I was rather hoping blood would boil over today. Alas!

I echo what The Jakester said earlier. If we make a really good hockey move to help out the team for the next 4 or 5 years beyond this one I am all up for ideas. The thing we need most is a bonafide, coming into their prime top line winger.

I hear you loud and clear. The past two games? Yes they have been hard to watch but frankly I am surprised this squad hasn't been struggling even more. We're making pretty frigging good with our roster if you ask me.

At the end of the stats sheet scoring is the issue and will continue to be so.

Fickle fans forget that future potential aside, we only have TWO real top 6 forwards right now, and both of them, Alfie and Turris are solid 2nd liners. Everyone else has been thrust up ~1.5 lines and playing over their heads and out of roles. Only a moron would be surprised we will have games like this.

I think right now most of us have to be concerned with Turris. Silfver is 22 and a rookie, z bad is 19 and a rookie, 3 defensemen are rookies, 3 top 6 forwards are injured in milo, Lats, and spezz. Turris is a guy that we need to step up and he really hasn't produced like we need him to. I'm hoping with a healthy lineup he can be a 60 pt guy, but we really just need him to shoulder the extra responsibility.

I could not watch the game, but in the game log I saw that Zibanejad had the lowest amount of ice time. I mean I don't hate Silfverberg or anything, but I never understand why Maclean gives this guy so much more ice time then Zibanejad despite both players having the same amount of points.

Silfverberg is not going to be that amazing player that every one thinks he can be, his style of play is just SEL exclusive, and will never translate to the NHL. Honestly in the NHL he is actually a third line winger(for his defensive upside), rather than a top 6. He maybe a rookie, but honestly I have seen no improvements or creativity in his game that indicates that he will be a good player in the future. Sure he has a good shot, but so does Turris and look where Turris is at.

Also why does the Smith line continuously get so much ice time, when the center of that line has not scored in more than a year. They even get more than enough pp time. I really don't understand Maclean's fondness for Smith. He is just a good defensive player and that's it. He can't create scoring opportunities, none of his assists this year have been pretty.

Listen, we all knew this season was going to be an uphill battle when Spezza and Karlsson went down. Lots of teams are banged up right now but there isn't another squad in the league missing the talent we are with Spezza, Karlsson, Michalek and Cowen out.

Obviously we're going to have a hard time scoring goals when we're missing our three top offensive players. Obviously we're going to see mistakes made in our own zone when there are so many rookies and sophomores in the line-up.

I'm not making excuses for the guys we have playing right now, it's just the reality of the situation. On paper, the roster we've been rolling with is one of the worst in the NHL, but do to outstanding coaching, world class goaltending and a solid work ethic we've been able to squeak out games.

Also people got to stop with the fantasy talks about call ups, because Stone will not make a difference in the line up, and Mark Borowiecki will take stupid penalties and cost the team. Once again never understood the love for Mark Borowiecki besides being a hard worker he is nothing else, but a guy that can hit and take penalties.

About 6 min left in the 3rd period & being outshot the B-Sens are leading the Marlies 4-2. Stone with 2 assists & Prince with a goal & an assist.

The Sens have been missing that great goalie for a very long time. Now they have him in Anderson having a Vezina chance this season & some of you want him traded? Why for a good return? So I guess the Habs should trade Price or the Rangers trade Lundqvist because they would get good returns? What is better a Vezina calibre goaltender NOW & in the immediate future or a prospect or pick that may work out?

This site is getting me very angry today.

Hoping for a win tomorrow. But if they lose I expect to come on here to read that Bryan Murray & Paul McLean should be fired. Some comments on here are as ridiculous as that today. Trade Alfie, Turris? Why, because they lost a fucking game without 4 top stars in the lineup?

Time to quit the site for the day.

They are on the ice to shut down the top lines of the other teams - a checking line.

They get more PP time because the top 3 players on the PP are out of the lineup with injuries.

Yikes.. that's all I can say.

Keep preaching sandy! There are some real morons on here today. Trading Turris has to be the dumbest suggestion I've heard in a while.

I know everyone is in a rush to trade a goalie, but why? We need Anderson now and for a few more seasons. With Lehner going back to the A when Andy comes back Bingo has a real chance if winning another championship. Bishops value is likely to be the highest in the summer.

To all the regular Senators supporters on Sens Talk, who are somewhat mature, I am
convinced, that the posters who slam the team after a defeat, are very immature, and simply cannot handle a Sens loss.

Call up so and so, trade this guy, and many negative comments, are simply young frustrated, but new hockey fans, who are not able to live with a defeat of their
Senators!!

These fans will get over this , when they

Sens had their chances.. just dont have finish! I thought Gryba had a good game despite the minus 2. Got caught at the end of a shift and smith skated by Vorochek. As well a 3 on 1 is every dmans nightmare. This guy had offensive chances, and led the team with 5 hits and 5 blocks.
Liked what Wiercioch did today, was more physical and moved the puck well.
we really need to backcheck on those 3 on 2's or 3 on 1's. Until we find the back of the net we won't win games. Simple rule is that 3 goals win win you games in the long run.

I would also agree if your expectation are for us to win every game and play perfect with a AHL squad for the most part you are in for some disappointment.
I don't discount that they can do well and win some games but for the most part this is an experience year for the young guys.

Our four best players are out Anderson Spezza Karlsson and Michalek, not being at the bottom of the standings is a bit of a miracle if you ask me.

Silfverberg is not going to be that amazing player

Silfverberg has a world class shot, skates well, and has a very high hockey IQ. He's getting better and better. If you watch closely you'll see how well he anticipates the game.

I guarantee within his next 2 full seasons (if healthy) he will score 25+ goals and 60 points. I don't even have any doubts about it. He's that good. Playing so much better than you're giving him credit for.

Watch how often Silfverberg is able to predict where he should be on the ice and what he should do with the puck. He constantly makes the right decisions regarding those two things. That is the biggest common quality of elite players. I implore you to look closely at how often he keeps the play alive, finds the open man, or is able to get the puck back for Ottawa when it seems like a 50/50 opportunity to take possession.

Smith brings nothing. He doesn't play in any important defensive situation (he had zero minutes of ice time in OT against Boston even when they were killing a penalty). Today on the 5-3 he didn't touch the ice, Daug and Regin were out there most of the time. What confuses me is how does he get any PP or empty net time?

For all the doom and gloom there this team is still hanging in there and finding ways to win close games, sure they lost the last two but won the last 5 close games. The defense made mistakes tonight, however for a bunch of rookies back there it's not as glaring as some of the crap we've scene on Sportsdesk the past few years with T.O trying to bring in their defensive "stars". As for Alfredson, good for him sticking up for a teammate. There are a lot of young guys on this team and that will show them what they need to do when a the other team is running around all game and takes a run at one of your players.

i still stand with what i and a few other posters have said about silfv since late 2011. he has elite hockey sense with an elite shot to go with it.
he will be filling a top line spot very easily, i still believe he is alfie 2.0

following his career since his under 18 leagues, he always shows signs of being slow at adapting to the league. it has taken him atleast 3 years in each of the leagues he has played in to reach a point per game status.

I think we were just slightly too excited for him this year after we saw it only took him ~20 games to adapt to the AHL. and jakob passing that mark at the NHL and still not too many signs of confidence coming from him. I do not expect to see him skate with that confidence for atleast a full season. and i surely dont expect him to be a top line player for atleast another 2 full seasons.

turris is right now ready to be a great 2C but not the top center of a club yet. Cant keep dwelling about our injuries right now, obviously he would be in a perfect role if spezz was still here. its pretty obvious right now with his scoring slump he is holding that stick too tight, not using the creativity he has a natural playmaking center.
i hope he, just like we used to complain about spezza does 1 simple thing. SHOOT the puck more.

Just reading the comments for the first time. This club failed to gain a point for the first time in 7 games with a depleted line-up. Chill! Yes, there was little response after some of the rough stuff. It was a one-goal game. We were not on the bench; maybe MacLean and his staff were preaching discipline. Bottomline is that the team is getting the most possible out of the hand that has been dealt.

Just because it took him 3 seasons to raech ppg status in the SEL does not mean it will be same in the NHL. He had a dominant year last year playing on the big ice surface(after 3 years of playing in SEL), but he sure as hell did not play too well in the World championships playing on a line with Alfredsson while playing a larger ice surface(Silfv's forte). The world championship tournament is a tournament where even crappy NHL players play well in.

I mean if you watch his highlight package in SEL, his finishing has no variety it's just rush, shoot, and score. Not sure how you can use that sequence of play as indicator of how amazing he will be in the NHL. Tons of players have amazing shots, and tons of juniors have amazing numbers in the Juniors who never really translate their "elite sense" into the NHL.

I think Silfverberg will just end up being another David Rundblad.

i laugh at some of the people on here, Silfverberg has been out best forward probably for the last 10 games overall, if he had a guy to feed him the puck more often he would be scoring, Turris has been horrible and that is effecting Alfredsson and Silfverberg's game. Turris needs to step up he is better than this, he needs to simplify his game more. He is making some questionable plays out there, trying to go though players, he is trying to do way too much out there, if he made the more simple plays right now he would be doing so much better, he is trying to force the puck, rather than hit the open man or shoot. A great example the 3 on 2 the Sens had in the 3rd, Turris sweet spot is coming down the left side of the goalie, and he tried to pass it into the bodies, nobody was on him, he should have shot, I was so pissed when he tried to make that pass. When you have a shot you shoot it, especially with the shot Turris has. Turris better figure it out soon or he could be bait at deadline

I cant wait till Mark Stone gets called up, get a guy that will shoot the puck that is what we need, no more of this trying to make the perfect play, get the puck to the net, get some bodies in front of the goalie, that is what the Sens need to do to succeed we dont have as much talent right now as most teams, we have to get those dirty goals they cant look like Stamkos-St Louis or Crosby-Kunitz or Thornton- Marleau out there. They cant do that, it needs to be a group effort. I think Jim O'Brien should be given 1st line duties, he has been stellar on the faceoffs, he has but up 5 goals with his 4th line ice time, and he has been an offensive force out there everytime he hits the ice, seriously reward O'Brien and give him a chance to play with some skilled players he is showing his 1st round potential and you keep him on the 4th line, as in the words of Gordon Ramsley, "Piss off"

The way I see the situation for the SENS is a win win scenario. Should they keep fheir spot for a playoffs run, it will be great for the youngsters and their learning curve. Should they start to drop in the standing, which would be logical considering our constant lack of scoring, the SENS would be in the lottery for the number 1 pick.

We are now reaching the half point in the season and every year, it's where contenders starts playing like contenders and will seperate from survivors like Ottawa and Toronto The only aspect that would put us in the playoffs is our goaltending which is possible.

As for Silfverberg, you don't ask a kid with 21 games in the NHL to become the best offensive player for a team considering he had played all of his hockey on a bigger surface. This kid will be great in a couple of season just as Zibby and Turris.

Patience is the word.

Go Sens Go

I agree but I hope that Murray is making some calls to unload some of our stop gap guys who don't figure to be on the team next year or the year after.Sens have trouble scoring goals but we continue to roll with 2 lines that you know have no chance of creating anything. Right now our 3 centres should be TUrris-DaCosta- Zibby. Too many pluggers. Show me teams that have a stagnant 3rd line full of pluggers. You can't rely on 2lines. I know we have injuries but we have the guys to use to make things better till Spezza gets back.

Silfverberg-TUrris-Stone
Regin-DaCosta-Alfie
Greening-Zbby-Smith
Condra-JOB-Neil

This is what I'd like to see. Smith on the wing let him bang if he doesn't
press box time. Grant takes his spot if he doesn't produce.

Lets hope they leave Benoit in the line up from here on in, a lot of nights he has been one of our top dmen. I am certain if you let him get comfortable the offensive numbers he has put up at every level will start to show. He has really surprised me in our own end too, great shot blocker/first pass/ and has bailed philps out countless times on 2 on 1's.

Da Costa had his chance to prove Maclean that he belongs in the NHL. Unfortunately, he was way too soft for the coach to keep him around.

With Spezza, MM9 and (dream) Perry as our first line, every other lines become extremely strong as they will be back in their appropriate ROLE. Add Karlsson and Cowen = contenders for the Cup.

We will have a great team next season. Should we make the playoffs this season, it's all bonus gang.

Amen to that. Turris and Silfverberg are fine. They're young and showing lots of potential/talent.

Gotta judge prospects by their play, especially when they're 1-2 lines higher than they should be because of injuries.

Trading Michalek is a step sideways at best. Consider him a piece we have in place. He plays a complete game, no improvement necessary/likely.

Finally, we don't need to trade Anderson. Former goalie graveyard (that's us) finally gets one of the NHL's best and we're talking trade bait? I don't care how deep we are, that's too much.

I think a lot of posters must be young, impatient fans with ADHD.
