Game Day- Bishop Starts in Battle of Ontario

In the past couple seasons, the Battle of Ontario, once one of the best rivalries in hockey, has lost some of its edge.

With the Toronto Maple Leafs stuck in a seeminlgy endless run of mediocrity, it was hard to get overly excited about a vist from our Ontario neighbours. But this season, that seems to be changing. It should be an electric atmosphere at SBP tonight when the injury-riddled Senators take on the suddenly respectable Leafs.

The two teams come into tonight's match up in a dead heat- 22 points a piece through 18 games.

The Senators have reeled off three straight wins while the Leafs have won 7 of their past 10. The Leafs controlled the last match up on Saturday night but that was against a Sens team still reeling from the injury to their star defenceman. They have been a different team since that night.

Ottawa will obviously be without Craig Anderson tonight but it doesn't seem like a long term injury. Can't imagine Anderson missing more than two weeks.

In the meantime, Paul MacLean will turn to Ben Bishop as his starting goalie on Saturday night. Robin Lehner will dress as his back up. With Stephane Da Costa back in Bingo, Jim O'Brien draws back into the line up assuming a spot as 4th line right winger.

Here is how the Coach lined them up at the morning skate.

Silfverberg-Turris-Alfredsson
Greening-Zibanejad-Condra
Dziurzynski-Smith-Neil
Daugavins-Grant-O'Brien

Methot-Gryba
Lundin-Phillips
Wiercioch-Gonchar

For those of you going to the game tonight, be LOUD!

The rivalry between the two fan bases has been taken to another level thanks to the "Take Back the Bank" initiative so you know the Leafs supporters will be out in full force. I've always felt the best way to take back our building is to just be louder than the other guy.  Don't be afraid to support your team!

GO SENS GO!

  • Special night at SBP as the Senators and Sens Foundation will host Hockey Talks. For a third straight season, the organization will partner with Do It For Daron (D.I.F.D.) to educate fans on youth mental health.  They'll also be raising funds in support of the D.I.F.D. Fund at the Royal Ottawa Hospital Foundation for Mental Health. For more information on the Hockey Talks event, check out this link.

Back in the hay day it was known across North America, for sure. Certainly hasn't been at that level in a long time though. Perhaps "in hockey" is more appropriate.

Regardless of tonight's outcome, we all know it's just a matter of time before this Laffs bubble bursts. They are playing way above their capabilities and they don't have an Andy on the roster.
(well I guess neither do the Sens but they will get him back soon)

Then he is sent down.

DaCosta was not being effectively utilized on the 4th line. Sending him back down means he will get top line minutes and help continue his development. Also, Bingo needs skilled bodies right now.

I'm not sharing in the surprise about Da Costa being sent down. He wasn't playing well enough to be top 6 here and is wasted in the bottom 6. I like him and all but let him help Bingo stay competitive. JOB is back in and fits better with the muckers and Regin is cleared to play if they need more skill.

Bishop starting makes sense. I'm sure Lehner will get a game at least to make his call up feel worth while. I'm also sure he knows that he's the future and Bishop (or less likely Anderson) will get moved before next season.

One thing on leaf fans - I think a large number of them at games are from the Ottawa area and were leaf fans before the Sens even existed. As Chirp said, just be loud as Sens fans and the tables will eventually turn.

Chirp I wouldn't say the Leafs controlled the last game in the battle of Ontario. The Sens were the better team but the Leafs got some lucky bounces and solid goaltending from Scrivens.

The biggest difference in Leaf land is now they actually have a very good coach in Randy Carlyle. I'm not surprised to see then doing well but I do hope they crash and burn soon. I still can't believe Burke stole JVR for Schenn. Total robbery...One of the few good things Burke did in his tenure in Toronto.

I hope this pesky Sens squad comes out firing on all cylinders tonight and runs the leafs and their fans out of the building on national television.

4-2 Sens win tonight. Silfverberg extends his point streak to 4 games. Two goals from captain Alfie, one from Gonchar and another from Condra!

That we have to "take back the bank" to begin with is just embarrassing. If fans supported the Sens from the beginning, it wouldn't be an issue. I mean for god sakes we've had players Chara, Hossa, Emery, and Hasek (and even Heatley was exciting at the time he was popping 40gs a year)!!

We will never rid SBP of the Laffs fans but hopefully over the next few years they will dwindle down after realizing Karl/Silf/ZBad/ Lehner are raw superstars.

Lets be honest here, the Leafs do this in every hockey city in Canada outside of Montreal whose team does the same thing. Watch their road trips it only happens in Ottawa 3-4 times a year versus once a year in the western road trips.

Its the direct result of a fanbase who has nothing but the concept of a team to cheer for, they havent made the cup final, let alone a championship since the league had more than six teams.

I thought us sens fans were better than that, Malkin going down is not only a loss to the Pens but to hockey as a whole just like Karlsson. Sucks that we lost Karlsson but I'd never wish an injury onto a player that wasn't involved. Cooke on the other hand is another story..

Not sure why Benoit drew the short straw on D, he has been a plus player and has been great in our end, and is a skilled puck mover. Great goal the other night and joins the rush very well. Perhaps they want Lundin in the line up so they can move him at the trade dead line. I have a hunch BM wouldn't have even signed Lundin had he known how Benoit/Wire/Gry ba/Boro would play. Defence has been the least of our worries, need the forwards to start creating more offence. Lets go boys!!!

They were saying on the radio to bring up Lehner they had to send someone down.. so it was DaCosta.

With games against the Leafs & Bruins maybe they felt they needed bigger bodies.

I hope Lehner gets the start against the Bruins.. he shut them out before with Andy out.. but then again Karlsson & Spezza were playing.

I want the Sens to beat the Leafs soooooo badly.

The Sens played well the last game.. even with 3 young players playing thei 1st NHL game. But those 3 players are more settled and should be better in this game.

What the Leafs have is speed & Kessel & JVR.. that's it.

Hoping Silf pots a couple. If he can score on Brodeur & Lundqvist.. he should be able to get a couple past Scrivens.

And for Carlyse to even indicate the Leafs injuries are similar to the Sens.. it has to be something in the water in TO. And to say that Toronto media is not allowed to print that? That's just incredible.

I hate the Leafs and everything about them.. especially their fans. And no HATE is not to strong a word.

You're not the problem Miguel.

You don't post 20 or 30 times EVERY day.
You don't try to take over every conversation with needless nitpicking or bozo comments.

Check out some of the forums from last Fall - lots of great opinions and counter opinions from people who have moved on because they're not interested in fighting through the Hax / Tookie blather.

I agree.

It gets out of hand when he feels the need to agree or disagree with literally every comment. As if its his site or something. The nitpicking is just wild. It's bad when you can tell someone's OCD from reading a blog.

The reason it bothers me is people then are hesitant to post their opinions. It's almost like they feel they shouldn't interrupt a 1 on 1 conversation. Or they don't want every little detail of their comment to be picked apart.

I personally don't care what Hax or Tookie say, however this site is much less interesting to read when all you're reading is one mans opinion over and over. Everyone comes here to read multiple views on multiple subjects. Lately it just hasn't been that way

On to hockey...

I too am bummed that DaCosta was sent down but I think it had to be done. I saw it coming after the last two games where he wasn't contributing anymore and then the coach gave him less and less ice time. As others have said, OBrien will be more effective on the 4th line, especially against the leafs.

Bishop definitely deserves the start. He's played great. Looked a little shaky last game but you can't blame him since he got thrown into an intense game in the 3rd.

I'm hoping Silfverberg gets on another role like he did in bingo once he got the feel of the game/league. I think if he improves his strength, he'll be a very effective all-around player

Agreed with most of you that I am disappointed that we could not keep DaCosta up here.
With Spezza out I would have thought he would easily slide into top 6.
Guess with Regin set to come back, they did not want him in the bottom 6.
This could be Regin's last real shot at top 6 with the Sens,
here is hoping that he finally takes the reigns and puts up some points.

Hope the Laffs take our Cardiac kids lightly tonight, and we surprise them with a much tireless effort and come out with the 2 points. Have to admit this never can die attitude is inspiring!

Some (kingalfredsson and Sandy) have pointed out that someone had to go down to clear a roster spot for Lehner. One might debate Grant going down instead but my assumption (FWIW) is that they figure the top 6 is set as is since Smith is getting so much ice time in a shutdown role so it made more sense to keep Grant as a fourth liner than Da Costa.

Hey Mr. "Knowledge", here are some tips:

I read a comment by a person on HB -- that a friend of his is at a bar at SBP and it's full of Leaf fans.

Seems the Sens plan to keep them out failed miserably.. and is going to make them awful to deal with in the stands this game for the Sens fans in attendance. The only way to shut them up is for the Sens to win... GSG

If they get drunk and disorderly.. have them kicked out.

Also, an off-topic...

For next year going to Bingo should be Noeson, Puemple, Ceci, Aneloski, Costello, Sdao -- my guess.. I don't know if anymore prospects 'graduate' to the AHL.

So how do they make room for them? There are not that many spots available in Ottawa. We know Gonchar, Lundin, Latendresse and probably Regin are gone. There is room for 2 more D and 2 more forwards. Where do they all fit?

Will it be the old quantity for quality trade for someone else?

I'd go as far as saying SC has the most well behaved and respectful followers I've seen on the internet.

Great to see Zibby settling in and playing unbelievable hockey right now. That goes for all the young call-ups. Maclean and Richardson have done amazing things with these kids. This is going to be a great and exciting team for a long time.

I love the shot at the Sens bench when they scored that third goal. Again, it's great to see how pumped Alfie is. I don't think this is his last season. Him playing with these young kids has him playing like he's in his 20's again.

The best part about the sens winning for me was that I celebrated in front of all the leafs fans in Toronto. I'm in Toronto for the weekend and the look on all those leaf fans at the pub/resteraunt when I cheered as loud as possible when we scored was great!

It's all about skating hard and all these guys work hard. Look at Edmonton all the talent in the world but they don't have a nice mix. the Sens mix with no injuries would be absolutely sick. no doubt in my mind if we had the whole team healthy , the SENS would be the best team in the East. He'll we might be anyways next week! Haha

That's my thought exactly, shows what amazing character guys we have in the pipehole. I think Grant is a little too timid right now, but damn DZ is my kind of player!

I know!

He's similar to DaCosta where he's not the biggest but has a stupid amount of skill.

Too bad he's injured right now. Would have probably gotten his first shot at the NHL.

Also too bad Hoffman and Stone are hurt too. Jesus Christ were deep. It's almost weird

Seriously I don't think Latendresse will make it back in the lineup. He can't follow the pace in the NHL anymore. I think we've all discovered better options.

The interesting thing will be - will Murray trade for O'Reilly - cuz he's the type of player with grit who would help us and you don't want Montreal or the Laughs getting him. We have extra bodies its a move that can be made. Zibby and Silf are untradeable though as they have been outstanding.

I don't think we should trade for orielly, we are already deep at center and we should keep our prospects especially when we are doing so well. With all the injuries I think it puts all the MAJOR trade rumors to rest

Mika Zibanejad is the legit total package. Very advanced in the way he plays for his age. He hits, skates hard, generates offense, scores, wins faceoffs... these are the types of players you win games with man. So impressed

His recent progress is VERY encouraging.

Great games by the recent healthy scratches Colin Greening and Mika Z-Bad. Who thinks they got the msg?! lol

I still can't believe how well all the call ups have played this year. Wiercioch, Gryba, Benoit, DD have all impressed me for the most part, and our two new Swedish sensations Silf and Z-Bad are starting to show us all that they are the real deal!

The more they win... the more confidence these young guys get.

Turris played against the top checking line of the Leafs.. as per Yost.. leaving the Zibby-Greening- Condra line to do all the damage. Each one had a goal.. and were +9 on the night..also as per Yost.

A line that should not be broken up... Chemistry appears to be there.

Will Regin get back in the lineup? Then again.. the B-Sens needs some of their players back. BSens had a 3-1 lead but end up losing 5-3..

Just finished watching the game. What a beautiful ending. Lots of character tonight in the win.

The boys were getting tired towards the 2nd half of the 3rd but Greening sure injected some energy into things right when it was needed most.

Speaking of beautiful, right behind the visitors bench was the winner of the world's ugliest Laffs fan. Woof.

So happy to see those delusional morons crawl home in tears. That's how you take back the bank. Keep winning at home and they will learn to keep away.

Guess that MacLean knew what he was doing, when he sent down Da Costa.

His Line 2 of Greening-Zibby-Condra,
provided the 3 goals ( 1 for each player
to win the game ).

Zibanejad has excellent face-off skills, and won the draw, to have Greening tap in the winning goal with 24 seconds left!

Until the return of Spezza, I would not dismantle that Line 2 combo whatsoever !

Knock those Habs down from their high horses, and bring them down to earth !!

GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

I think that trading for O'Reiley could work if we move him or Turris to the wing. As good as O'Brien has been this year you have to trade talent to get talent. Give Colorado O'Brien, Regin and next year's 2nd for O'Reiley and our healthy line up would be:

Michalek-Spezza-Silfverberg
O'Reiley-Turris-Alfie
Greening-Zibby-Condra
Dziurzynski/Daugavins-Smith-Neil

What amazes me about the team's recent success, is how MUCH BETTER we'd be with our actual good players in the lineup. I mean Paul Maclean having this group winning with a roster consisting of a bunch of AHL players is amazing. So just HOW MUCH BETTER would we have been with Cowen, Karlsson, Spezza, Michalek, Regin, Latendresse, Anderson healthy!!

So impressed by the team right now. Sometimes, you can't help but think about what would have been.

But it is what it is! Go Sens Go! Maclean for Jack Adams!!!!!!!!!

He sure is MISTER ARTICULATE.

When his hockey career is over it will take him about 10 minutes to get a job in broadcasting.

If that's all that would be required to acquire O'Reilly he would be a Senator by now. Wishful thinking my friend. I would love for Murray to trade for O'Reilly but the cost of trading for him and then having to sign him to a contract is probably too steep for the Sens.

Besides, we don't need a trade right now, the boys are rollin!

Sandy I believe he is having some after effects of the hit from Scranton. He played well Friday night but was getting dizzy and had to be pulled.

Friday would have been a convincing win had he stayed and probably would have won saturday too had he been healthy. Chevrie will not cut it.
