Karlsson Addresses Media at SBP

Erik Karlsson spoke to the media this morning for the first time since the incident that ended his season.

Based on the comments from the reigning Norris Trophy winner, it’s pretty clear that he’s not quite ready to forgive and forget.  While Karlsson would not go so far as to say Matt Cooke injured him on purpose, he did say that Cooke “knew exactly what he was doing out there.”

Obviously some strong words from a clearly frustrated Karlsson.  The Sens defenceman feels that it was a play that could have been avoided and from a player that has been out to get him before.

While Karlsson is going to take some heat for today’s comments, you have to admire his honesty on the issue.  The league’s best defenceman had his season ended prematurely and he has every right to be disappointed.  The good news is Karlsson expects a full recovery.

Full audio of the Karlsson press conference is available here.

  • Couple roster moves from the Senators this morning.  The team has recalled goaltender Robin Lehner from Binghamton and reassigned forward Stephane Da Costa.  Da Costa played the least of any Senator last night against the Rangers.

It just means that someone WILL bang into Cooke next matchup.

Who knows, the speed Karlsson can skate, and his agility, I wouldn't be surprised if Karlsson will throw a hit on him.

Good for Karlsson for saying what he feels. Cooke is a scum bag and has no respect for or from his opponents. We know what happened to Pronger, hopefully Cooke will meet the same fate.

I think that Lehner will be the starter. I'm thinking that when he was sent down, Murray and Mac probably told him that if Anderson ever got hurt that he would be the starter.

I'll have to agree with EK, I've watched Cooke chase numerous stars around the ice. Lets not forget that he only "changed" because he had to otherwise Malkin and Crosby would be targets for opposing teams, so Mario and Ray Shero were proactive.

Cooke didn't mean to cut him, but he did mean to take him hard into the boards when he was in a vulnerable position; Cooke's MO.

I think they have to start Bishop. Sends a horrible message if they don't. "Hey Ben, Andy's hurt can you finish the game?" then "Oh we got Lehner here now, go back to your door opening duties."

The second goal was not weak BTW - he was screened. Andy might have stopped it but only because Andy has been unconscious this year.

If you don't like the "fair play" approach, then consider playing Lehner over Bishop also hurts Bishop's trade value. Play him against Toronto and then you can go either way after that (Lehner will have had some practices in etc).

Glad we managed to win last night - a loss coupled with Andy's injury would have had people jumping off buildings. Even with the injury being less serious than it looked.

I think part of this move is that they've already decided that Turris and Smith are getting most of the quality ice time so Da Costa is stuck with grinders which is a waste. Also it's a bit of a help to Bingo to give them another quality player to go along with Boro.

I really don't like how the NHL lets top divisional teams go top 3 in the conference. Carolina is 3rd in the east with 17 points they shouldn't even be in the playoffs but because their whole division sucks balls they get to be 3rd bullshit! I think if your first in your division it should just guarantee that team a top 8 position, Carolina does not deserve 3rd place and neither did Florida last year.

Wouldn't they actually be the 8th seed based on winning percentage?

Not sure why it's under your skin so much - playing more games within your own division basically equates to getting the best team out of that division into the playoffs. Happens in every sport.

Realignment next year (or whenever they pull the trigger on that) will change things a bit as there will only be 4 divisions.

Very impressed with Karlsson's presser. He's still young but you can tell he's got his shiz together (Alfie's influence a big part of that I'm sure) and will someday make a great captain.

I too like the honesty about Cooke which is actually a little un-Alfie-like since too often Alfie seems to forgive guys. I know it's blasphemy but the only negative I can ever attribute to Alfie is that he's sometimes too nice. It works for him as he's a steadying influence and Neil provides the team with the emotion when they need it, but the only way to improve on the Alfie model (IMHO) is to add a bit more well-focused anger at times.

Now, MaClean is getting some love around the web. I'm scared for his health now. The night TSN admitted Karlsson was now considered the Best player in the league before Crosby, he get sliced on that same night.

Feeling pretty divided about the Karlsson presser. Yes, I like his no BS attitude and straight talk. But I'm not sure turning up the temperature on the Cooke issue is productive for him.

michalek- maybe only lockout related injury we have

Not sure I call Karlsson's injury a freak accident. More like a reckless attempt by Cooke to try and pound Karlsson that went even worse than Cooke wanted it to. I think we all know that Cooke wanted to take a chance to hurt Karlsson and was probably hoping to send him to the ice - the cut was not intended specifically.

And not sure how you consider MM9's injury lockout related - or are you just saying it's partly due to the lack of a formal preseason?

And you say I'm ignorant, LOL, Cooke's change has nothing to do with Corsby and Malkin becoming targets, Crosby was and is still a target to opposing teams, so is Malkin but he's huge!, do you even watch other games? You dont know that, your going by reputation. It wasnt even a hard hit.

Every NHL'er has "bad intentions" when hitting another guy into the boards, they dont want to kill them but they want to inflict pain.

Anyways the play was clearly seen by many as a freak accident, routine pin check gone wrong.

No point in bringing this non issue back to the front.

I'm not going by reputation. I'm going by the replay. What is Cooke's skate doing there in the first place? He's clearly trying to tangle up with Karlsson.

I'm not even saying it was dirty but it was reckless and irresponsible. A suspension wouldn't help us or Karlsson or anything but trying to pretend it was 100% incidental and could have happened to anyone is naive.

If he was trying to pin Karlsson he would have kept both skates on the ice.

Ok I didnt want to go there but here goes...

Watch the replay, both guys are seperate at first, right? then they collide and stick fight, while both looking down for the puck, right?

Now just imagine that maybe, just maybe Karlsson is tougher on his skates than Cooke anticipated and when pushing on each other, Cooke loses balance a little, going backwards, right?

This imbalance causes Cooke to lift his skate temporarily. When they hit the boards, balance is shifted forward and skate come down.

Now remember this is all done under what, 2 seconds, to even think what people are saying he did it intentionally is ridiculous.

Most of the time yes but in some circumstances when the guy who is being pinend fights back the pinner can lose balance, not anticipating the force of the pinned guy, happenes all the time. The 2 examples Ward gave that same night, both guys lifted their legs slightly, its physics 101 guys.

Force makes you go backwards.

I see your point Tookie but nothing else about Cooke's positioning makes him look off balance. He doesn't flail his arms and his right leg doesn't seem to wobble.

Again, in no way am I suggesting Cooke tried to cut Erik and I don't even think he was trying to slewfoot him as some have suggested. I'm just saying that if you put Alfredsson in that exact same situation Cookie was in, his skate would not have been so far off the ice and if it were due to being off balance he wouldn't have still tried to pin the guy with his flailing skate.

I'm over it and happy Neil responded when he did. I don't like that Cooke is still in the NHL as I think he's a time bomb but that's not my call.

Yes and no. I was so livid when Andy went down I wanted someone to go after Krieder. I know he stepped on Methot's stick and wasn't trying to run Andy but at the same time he was bull-rushing the net in a way that there was no way he could avoid Anderson even if he stayed on his skates. If he hadn't stepped on Methot's stick I bet he'd have ended up with a goalie interference call as I can't see how he could have avoided him.

Not saying Neil should have jumped him but he was the only guy that looked legitimately pissed on his next shift.

All that said, I defer to MacLean and the "cooler heads prevail" approach, but in the moment I wanted Neil or someone to pound on any Ranger.

Here's a question though, out of the injuries, does anyone know more info on in/ou for the season? this is what I know:

cowen: ??? (thinking it's for sure done for season)
michalek: back soon
Andy: back soon

So I guess it's mostly Cowen that i'm wondering about. Anyone know the time frame given?

As I recall with Cowen they're calling it "done for the year" but the timeline was such that a playoff return wasn't out of the question.

Spezza's expected back with 5-6 games left in the regular season. Karlsson's Swedish blood might get him back in some miracle but I doubt it.

it looks like he begins his leg sweeping motion before they even get tangled up. It looks like he intentionally uses his skate to pin him on the boards. If he lost his balance he lost it due to using his leg to sweep and pin and not his body to pin.

That pin play happens every single game, dozens of times. Yet responsible players manage to avoid injury to the other player.

And - Wards examples weren't great in my opinion. The second one neither skate even left the ice so I'm not sure why he even used it.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter, wont bring Karlsson back.

I gave some thought about the retaliation on krieder and here is my thought (for what it's worth):

1) I'm with you...he was charging the net way too fast. And given the point that they couldn't beat andy all game and were probably frustrated makes me suspicious of this. did he intend to fall and take out andy's leg, highly doubt it, but probably intended to bump him and throw him off his game.

2) I was shocked at the no instant retalliation... BUT...i think that if you see your goalie on the ice in obvious pain, you avoid to make a fight around the net to avoid anyone falling or bumping in him and making it worse....best to respect the goalie and give him room to get off the ice safely. I did notice several big checks against the rangers shortly after for a few shifts...but i still wish someone would of retaliated.

3) Best retaliation i suppose is keeping cool and winning the game...so good job boys.

Well again we disagree I guess. I don't see how he can stop or avoid him unless he was planning to just go into the net.

Technically as it played out it probably should have been a tripping penalty on Methot but that would have caused a riot.

I'll just say one more thing about the Krieder play. Any time you see a player getting into the paint or taking an extra poke at a covered puck (which is all totally legal and part of the game) you see the goalie's teammates respond in some way. Sometimes just by pulling the player away, sometimes with a facewash, sometimes it goes further.

I agree completely with Patrick that trying to fight Krieder while Andy is down would be bad and possibly dangerous (though Krieder was at the other end of the ice pretty quick) but I've seen guys challenged to drop the gloves for less.

As pointed out though, we won the game, Andy's not seriously hurt and it's all over now. As for Hagelin however ....

They have the Tim Thomas money on their cap for this year (or can defer to next year I believe). That covers it I think and then in the summer they'll need to add more salary. But whatever they pay another goalie plus the buyout penalty probably amount to Dipietro's cap hit anyway.

According to CapGeek, the DiPietro buy out would be 16 years at $1.5M. He'd be on their cap until 2029.

Quick thought about the isles though, how do they plan to stay at cap with the demotion or buy out?

They have the Tim Thomas money on their cap for this year (or can defer to next year I believe). That covers it I think and then in the summer they'll need to add more salary. But whatever they pay another goalie plus the buyout penalty probably amount to Dipietro's cap hit anyway.

Once they move off the island they are going to get all the good UFAs just as NYR do now. They just need a goalie. 1st rounder for Bishop at the deadline (I wish).

Damn yes, the Isles would take that, just tell them Bishop is the real deal and garanteed to produce and boom its done!

Under the new collective agreement, his cap hit stays with the big club. That's why the Rangers and Habs bought out Redden and Gomez. You can't bury a cap hit in the minors anymore, unless its under a million I think.

Ya the demotion doesn't help this year - you're right. So they can save the Thomas cap hit for next year still (I think).

But isn't there an amnesty or something where they get a "free" buyout? I guess the Isles could just decline that and keep the $1.5M for 16 years.

LMAO - that's just hilarious that future generations might be able to laugh at the Isles. "Who's DiPieto??"

Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray said Friday the ankle injury suffered by goalie Craig Anderson in Thursday night's game shouldn't be a long-term one, but that he's unlikely to play in the next three or four days, according to Sportsnet reporter Ian Mendes.

Mendes also reported that Anderson "was feeling pain in a different part of his ankle [Friday] morning than he was [Thursday] night," when Rangers forward Chris Kreider lost an edge while skating near Anderson's crease and took him out, leading to the injury.

Anderson had stopped all 21 shots he faced to that point. Ben Bishop relieved and eventually led the Senators to a 3-2 shootout win, stopping six of seven attempts by the Rangers in the tiebreaker.

The Senators, who host the Maple Leafs on Saturday and the Canadiens on Monday, also recalled goalie Robin Lehner from Binghamton of the American Hockey League.

With all these injuries now I'm starting to consider what happens when these guys are healthy. If we're out of the playoff picture when Karlsson's ready to play, should we just shut him down anyway to avoid any chance of re-injury? Spezza? Should we give Michalek extra time off or even encourage him to get surgery if that might help down the road?

To put it another way, do we sort of count this season as "come what may" and focus 100% on letting these guys get healthy or do we somewhat (but intelligently) rush them back as soon as possible?

My gut says we can somewhat rush Michalek and Spezza back in once they're cleared to play but with Karlsson I'd be tempted to tack on an extra two week regardless just to play it safe.

Poor Bishop. I'm sure he'll get the required games to make him a UFA but last night was close to worst-case scenario for him.

Goes in out of the blue with Anderson injured and the fans/team feeling like they've been shot in the leg. Gives up two quick goals and suddenly we're behind (though neither were bad goals). Then the game doesn't even count towards his UFA status which I'm sure is a big goal of his.

I'm sure he was the happiest guy in the rink when Zibanejad scored.

Bishop for Islanders 1rst would be perfect for both teams if Bishop keeps playing like a bonafide no 1 goaltender. But let's wait until the trade deadline to make sure the Isles don't make the playoffs this season. That would give us a shot at number 1 pick. WOW

Let's keep dreaming!

As of today it would be 6th overall (lottery pending). With Florida and Calgary having games in hand and right below them.

I doubt we'd get their first for Bishop alone but man, if it somehow worked out that way!

Tookie, I enjoy reading your perspective most of the time. It's nice to hear your "lets not go too far over board" point of view. My take on it is that you get so firmly set in your own opinion of yourself that you can't ever adjust your position in the face of new information.

Don't paint yourself in a corner. If you do, bite the bullet and step in the paint. It's no big deal to have to admit that you can accept a change of opinion.

In this case, Cooke has not lost his balance. He is clearly stomping his foot down. Not recovering his footing but stomping. Did he mean to cut I Karlsson? No. Did he wish to injure in some way? Clearly YES. That's what he's paid to do. Same as Neil. Neil simply is more circumspect.

Glad we managed to win last night - a loss coupled with Andy's injury would have had people jumping off buildings. Even with the injury being less serious than it looked.

Agree with this.

I was behind Bishop last night and there was no way he saw that shot coming at all. Complete screen.

If anything, he seemed a little slow to react on the first gioal.

I was also about ready to jump off a building when we went down 2-1.

Give my head a shake Cooke didn't mean to cut him? Isn't that what I said in my post? Did he try to inflict pain but not kill him like you mention all players do in post #26. Why would the Islanders want Ben Bishop? Nabakov is still a good goalie and if DiPietro stays healthy he can put up solid numbers. If anything, Calgary is a team that needs a young goalie that can be molded by Kipper in his final years, they need him more and would probably have a higher pick!

EDIT: Looks like DiPietro has been waived!

Comments here are crazy today, can't even keep up and read them all. I've been busy too I guess, but anyway.

My thoughts on Bishop and Lehner. Yes, we all want to see Lehner play. But I have a feeling that Bishop will get the start Saturday, simply because he's Ottawa's backup to Anderson and he's faced more NHL time this year and showed very well in the last 3 games, including two shootout wins.

It just makes sense to me that they'll hand him the job, it's his to lose. If he comes out Sat and wets the bed, you can bet they'll ride Lehner until Anderson returns. And even if he wins, they'll give the next game to Lehner to share the load. ;)

if he plays 6 games with atleast 30mins TOI he will not be UFA - will be an RFA. So last nights game was good for him then, team won, he got the win, but since he played less than 30 mins - game doesnt count towards his RFA status.

I disagree on him not being able to stop...
That is just how you drive the net in the NHL... Remember Turris' driving the net as hard earlier this year in the 2nd or 3rd game against Florida? They are just that good man.

Had that been away from the net, Methot would most likely have received a tripping penalty... the Ottawa Senators are just the most unlucky team I've ever seen to be honest.

Meh. When I watch the replay it's hard to picture him avoiding Anderson unless he goes into the net. At the very least he gives Andy a huge snow shower.,

I agree it was technically a tripping penalty though. I'm assuming if the refs saw it they figured Andy getting hurt was "penalty" enough and they would have realized if they tacked on the 2 minutes they might have lost control of the game.

on the issue with Kreider running anderson:
the cause of this is much deeper and effects every team - and it starts with the people who run this league and this game. and this also applies to the karlsson incident. the league does not have clear and strict standards for unacceptable plays on the ice. further from that, the lousy loose criteria they do have, they fail to implement it consistently and strictly. then they have the most shit officiating this year (and every year) - i think duchene's offside goal was a tipping point. officials need to be accountable because with the powers they have, they impact outcomes of games. this combines to give players almost free reign to do what they want on the ice. in the end the game will learn a hard lesson that its the players that make the games exciting, not the game that makes players exciting. therefore, the league needs to change to protect players on the ice.

cont'd:
if you take the kreider play, he knows that at best he tips the puck in the net and at worst he just runs the goalie and gets a goalie interference at most if the ref deems it such- he obviously has no regard for what happens to the goalie himself. the same thing happened with karlsson, Cooke knows that at best he gets the puck for a play on net and at worst he hobbles karlsson a little but there is noone questioning why the hell is he hitting him like that in the first place or why is Kreider rushing at the net with that much speed.

i know it means the game will have to change a little, but thats the price to pay if fans, the league wants to see its best most exciting players play more games. and especially if the owners want to get their money's worth because its not good business to pay for injured rosters. and the league needs to get tough on referees, otherwise it will be headless chicken mode.

I wouldn't even say it's illegal. But it was pretty chippy out there even before the incident and I'm sure Cooke was running his mouth. That's the way the game is played for some guys - try to intimidate players. Cooke does it will next to no class and Karlsson clearly doesn't mind showing his dislike for the guy.

Just because it's not illegal doesn't mean it wasn't reckless and doesn't mean Karlsson doesn't have the right to be pissed. Didn't think he played that bad. He looked to position up quite well. He seems to control thier sticks in the crease quite well. A team that cycles down low will force movement from the defencemen. Remember the forwards have some serious responsibilites in the slot and corners. I do agree that he had trouble clearing the puck and he will need to do better. Remember he is 4 games into his career and playing against the top lines in the NHL. Id say is is doing very well but no perfect. Every player makes mistakes or all games woulds end 0-0. Just need to minimize errors. Averaging 20 min. I think Wiercioch is also getting better.

You mean his first offence in more than a year and half, dont like him but when you score 19 goals in a limited role, your sure to be wanted by that Org.

Its gotta be Burkie, and now he takes a job to Anaheim to try and stop the Sens from getting Perry! BASTARD!

Tookie, you have a point here. With Burke back with the Ducks, if he gets ANY say in the next few months outside of scouting, there is NO WAY Ottawa is involved in a Perry trade scenario. Not that I expected it, but just saying. FA is different, but not a trade.

Nice article on Daugavins:

http://senators.nhl.com/club/blogpost.htm?id=14438

I've always liked the guy since seeing videos of him during the Calder run. Plays the right way and all that stuff.

On the perfect Sens team he's 13th forward or maybe in Bingo, but still nice to have a guy like that for depth.

Agreed - It was my first thought when I heard the news, that Burke was brought in partially to perhaps help with Perry/Getzlaf negotiations.

Only the who have some anger issues that need resolving.

And can the "Cooke's intent" bickering please end. He can all agree he's a POS, who many people around think should no longer be in the league. It doesn't matter what camera angle you watch it at, how much you slow it down, what Cooke ate for supper before the game, it's not going to change the fact it happened and now Karlsson is out while this 'changed' player remains lacing up his skates.
And yeah it may be nice to see Neiler knock him into next week but I would much rather see Neil score a goal and give Cooke a nice toothless grin as he skates past him on the bench (where he'll be hiding for the majority of the game).

Yeah as much as I respect Crosby for what he can do and admit he's the best all-round player in the game, he is a spoiled brat. Not even his fault really since before he was 10 he was touted as the next great one. But he's clearly been spoiled by coaches and refs all his life and has a skewed view of the world.

The Foligno hit bothered me too for the same reasons.

I was at the game. A night of emotions. That Silfverberg first goal was great.. SH to boot.

Andy was his usual great self.. then the injury.

Disbelief and rage were the emotions I felt. First I thought it was an intentional run.. then saw the replay to see it was an accidental injury.

Glad the Sens won.

Silf needed about 10-12 AHL games to get used to the AHL game and the small ice. It has taken a little longer to get used to the NHL but he is slowly getting there.

Now if only Silf, Alfie & Turris can get out of the Leafs game unscathed that would be great.

As for Cooke.. I agree I can't see him intentionally cutting Karlsson.. but he was out to hurt him. Karlsson said his hands were high and knocked his helmet.

I don't believe Cooke is a changed player. He has been quiet the last season and a half.. BUT this guy is a lose cannon who will be up to his old ways some day. BOOK IT.

Paul McLean is a great coach. He's a players' coach..

He works them hard and expects a lot from his players.. but they really enjoy playing for him.

Gryba for his 4 game NHL experience is playing well. Young players make mistakes ... especially defensemen. For a big guy he can skate and he can hit.. Give him some time before throwing him under the bus.

I like Dizzy's game.. and agreed that line of Dizzy-Smith-Nei l with Methot & Gryba on the back.. is awesom. I'm hoping for a lot of Leaf pounding tomorrow.

I think Lehner plays against the Leafs and Bishop against the Habs..

I want the Sens to beat the Leafs soooooo bad to shut up those arrogant, confrontational , holier than thou, Leaf fans...

obviously crosby did not learn the lesson from the steckel hit, the hedman hit and the bump from Krejci and definitely the penguins organization did not learn from that either. they similarly missed the message when NYI gooned them last year with the likes of Colton Gillies not even showing any restraint towards a concussed Tangradi.

i think they need to be gooned again by some team this year too just to bring them back down to earth

All that said, I defer to MacLean and the "cooler heads prevail" approach, but in the moment I wanted Neil or someone to pound on any Ranger.

i do have to say i wouldnt be surprised if the rangers were thinking of running andy since he was stopping everything, that guy had fallen all over the ice all night so it would've been his excuse. after watching the replay and look at his footing he was going to fall into anderson regardless if methot touched him.

Respect the opinion of one and tolerate the opinion of the other but I prefer variety over quantity. That said, if all the lurkers contributed as much as those two do, we'd have some pretty awesome discussion in here.

-Yost's blog is good. There is a reason I wanted him to join this site. That said, I like to think we address different parts of the "market". I take pride on this being a blog run by a fan, for the fans.

Listening to the team earlier today they said tickets are still available for tomorrow nights game.

Question and opinions from you guys please -- do you think the Sens organization will succeed somewhat with having less Leaf fans in attendance for tomorrow night?

If it wasn't for HNIC more or less requesting Sat night for Leaf games... then games could be throughout the week and those from Toronto could stay there.

I know a lot of them on sites are stating they will make it worse for Sens fans when they go to SBP tomorrow because of the Sens letter to STH.

Also we spoke to a Security Officer at the game the other night about Leaf fans. We commented in that Sens fans should not get kicked out of the game for fighting with Leaf fans.

The point he made is whoever throws the first punch is the one kicked out of the arena.

So if you are going.. let the Leafs fan punch first.. LOL

Go Sens go..

For the IT guy: For each comment, create a $_SESSION hash relating to the poster's $_SERVER information (ie. client, ip, etc), then allow each viewer (based on their session vars) to ignore users comments.

That would allow people like me to easily ignore annoying posters like Tookie.

Hopefully there's no way a Leaf fan would buy a Habs ticket and vice versa, so neither of them would buy the package, and the tickets would go to Sens fans who want both. Here is the deal on matt Cooke, Karlsson is the one on the ice and has the best take on Cooks intent.

People do not want to admit that is could be 100% intentional what cooke did because they would have to believe that a person could be that rotten inside.

Cooke has proven he is malicious and it is in his blood, the kind of guy that would kick a dog and laugh because he yelped and find it entertaining.

I suggest Karlsson knows it was malicious intent, he may have even told Karlsson he would end his season or something of that nature this game or another, we don't know we were not on the ice.

Not long ago a guy walked into a school and killed a bunch of kids, his intent was more clear but don't underestimate people can be twisted or mean to the bone and capable of doing malicious mean things with no regret.

We want to think people are better than that but that is not always the case.

I am 100% behind Karlsson unwavering.

The Cooke play was dirty and was with intent. No he did not intend to cut the achillies. Yes he did intend to rake the back of the leg with his skate. In much the same way, no Bertuzzi didn't mean to break Moore's neck but yes he did intend to punch him in the head and tackle him into the ice. The final result is irrelevant. Severity exceeded intent but the injury is a result of intent.

My expectations will be Ben Bishop gets the start vs Toronto and then Lehner gets the start vs Montreal on Monday. One thing that I can guarantee is we will see Lehner for at least 1 game this year before Anderson comes back no question. Unless Bishop is unreal vs Leafs where we have to give him the next start, Lehner will play the Montreal game I am sure
