Much like last year, the Jets seem to be a different team on home ice. Winnipeg has posted an impressive 3-2-0 record at the MTS Centre but have struggled on the road, going 1-3-1 thus far. The Jets give up a ton of goals (only the Sabres and Caps give up more per game) so the Senators will want to jump on them early.
The Jets have lost four of their last five, giving up 23 goals along the way.
Mark Borowiecki was returned to Binghamton yesterday leaving the Sens with seven healthy defenceman. Patrick Wiercioch draws back into the line up while Andre Benoit sits. Kaspars Daugavins is also back in, while Jim O'Brien takes a turn in the press box.
No morning skate for the Sens this morning but here is how they are expected to line up
Zibanejad-Turris-Alfredsson
Michalek-Smith-Silfverberg
Greening-Regin-Neil
Daugavins-Da Costa-Condra
Methot-Karlsson
Lundin-Gonchar
Wiercioch-Phillips
Ben Bishop will make just his second start of the season for the Senators. Craig Anderson has played a ton of hockey lately and the the Sens want to be careful about overworking him.
Puck drop is scheduled for just after 2:00 PM with the game available on CBC and on the radio at the Team 1200.
I am a bit glad it is a 2:00pm start, don't have to wait so long for the game.
Wouldn't be surprised to see him move up the depth chart today. Has looked good in limited minutes.
Hope you're correct - he had a lot of chemistry with Silfverberg in the AHL
Someone mentioned a few days ago about a Senschirp app, is this something that would be possible for iOS and android? The site operates okay through the browser, but I think an app would be awesome.
also a Michalek goal would be nice.
Happy Hockey Day in Canada everyone!! :)
GO SENS GO!!
I think O'Brien is sitting due to the clog-up at centre. don't know if it is that sound of a strategy though considering he is used on PK - but then again questionable faceoff performance by O'Brien doesnt help either.
Benoit decision is weird....maybe PW46s parents are attending too lol?
Jim O'Brien busts his ass off every shift and is playing just fine. If you're going to scratch anyone in the lineup, scratch friggin Milan Michalek, who looks like he doesn't even want to compete on this team.
And why Ben Bishop? Ride Andy. He's the best goalie in the league. We have back to back games next week- the perfect time to play Bishop then. And honestly, Andy doesn't mind. Shit- he could probably play the entire season.
Sheesh.
Agreed. He's playing just fine. I don't understand. With guys like Regin, Michalek struggling... this doesn't make any sense.
He may not have the dangles of Alex Ovechkin, but JOB busts his ass off as much as anyone else on the team. Sit freakin Michalek. The guy barely moves his feet.
That has to be it. Because his play is speaking for itself. He has been dreadful to watch.
Should start to create
no, because the other team spends more time in our own zone, than we do in theirs.
Yes because 6th in the league at 25% is so horrible.
No I think it's great.
That one was just jokes
Wow...our guys look bored and non-existent today. Who knew watching a hockey game could be as exciting as watching golf.
WAKE UP SENS!!!
silent team silent crowd.
if people are reading this at SBP - MAKE SOME NOISE GUYS.
WTF guys this is the easy part of the sked where we need to make it count, get her going!
so time to buckle up boys - how can the sens go from putting 47 shots on cam ward to this kind of snoozer.
goodness gracious.
Budaj?
Absolutely BRUTAL!!!
But he got 35 goals last year..
I didnt watch any games. But I looked at the stat sheet at the end of the season. I assume all 35 goals were incredible hard working efforts.
Didn't cheechoo once have 56 goals in a season. I saw that stat once too..
9 now and if not for Bishop this game would be 3 or 4 to 0...
Bishop has redeemed himself for that Tampa game. So far atleast...
lol exactly. people are still confiding in the fact that he had 35 goals last year.
guess what, that was LAST. YEAR. Means nothing RIGHT NOW.
Good outing for Bishop so far, though.
And oh hey, Bobby Bulter scores for the Devils. Good for him.
what a letdown.
either they bounce it off a lucky goal or wpg sneaks one by Bishop.
the jets defense cant possibly be this good - missing both dustin and bogosian.
if there was a game for some guys on this team to breakout - this is the one.
i guess hockey players have off days too....bahh
Yeah this is the kind of day where some of Razor's blow would come in handy!
parise leaves them
their goalie is 40
elias is older now
they also had/have bankruptcy trouble
and yet - leading the east with i think only one regulation loss.
Fasil is a smug asshole in the same way that Dick Pound was. The gurus that run the Olympics, as awesome as the sports are, tend to be a bunch of Delta Bravos.
Like?
Agreed. Our boys are making Al Montoya look like a superstar right now.
Murray had better be working the phones right now. And there should be strong consideration to adios 9mm...
A second kind center? I mean if Regin is out too that's not good news..
Team 1200 said 5-1-1 @ home...
And Spezza-less
um no....games like this you have to remind yourself that the old sens curse of disappearing occasionally during afternoon games is still alive and contagious.
Bring Benoit in.
You cannot come into a game after a day of rest, playing like you've played the night before. They should refund every fan that paid for this game. They came out to watch a game, not garbage.
a total gimme against WPG and they have just given it away.
Yaaaaaaaaaay UGLY!!
I bet we get called for a penalty in the last minute and a half...
i bet the refs tell ottawa there is no need to play the last minute and a half.
They all need a kick in the ass after this pathetic showing. Except for Bishop, they've all played with complete disinterest.
He's not going anywhere. Ribeiro on the other hand...
No you're right. We didn't. Team didn't show up.
And to be honest, they're not a great team.
Time ta have a beer
If you turn 4529 times super fast on your axis, you'll get your afternoon back.
But don't over do it, or we'll have Kovalev and Clouston back on the team...
Karlsson is doing his job, Why else do you think the coach has put him out for the last 5 minutes
The forwards aren't doing a thing so Karlsson has to take extra chances.. nothing to lose, do or die
Loser...
9mm .. whatever that even means haha
More like a .09 Cent squirt gun
cant score themselves and wont let the other team score too many either.
shit show both ways lol
i hope MacLean drives it in the ear of each and every sens player that this was a one-off this season.
something i never understood last season - this team always let itself down at the worst moments when it had everything going for it. just when you would think these guys would pick it up and go nuts - they come out sleepy and sloppy. why is that....
Penis size?
ZING!
No desire? No heart? No drive? Laziness? At least that's how it came off today.
We need mac to make the right decisions
Completely unacceptable game.
Good to see the fan base start to come around and realize how useless he is
Michalek was garbage down the stretch last year and in the playoffs.
Should have pushed hard to move him in the off season. Still the sooner the better, the stock is dropping fast
brutal powerplay, weak on the board battles, weak on all other battles
this is what Eugene was talking about when he was begging for our money?
Time to open up YOUR wallet Melnyk, this team needs new talent
Fully agreed.
I've said it before and ill say it again. People are so tied up and blinded by the whole 'he scored 35 goals last year!!!' mentality, that they forget to LOOK WITH THEIR OWN EYES AT THE STATUS QUO, and realize right now, that he is a horrible hockey player. We need to shop him out
Enjoy the evening Chirpers!
Positives Bishop played well, Anderson got a rest, Dacosta played well.
Next game
Quoting T K:
Lundin still deserves some opportunities to get into game shape.
That being said I think Benoit should play every game for the rest of the year...
Fasil is a smug asshole in the same way that Dick Pound was. The gurus that run the Olympics, as awesome as the sports are, tend to be a bunch of Delta Bravos.
i think DaCosta will be very very interesting to watch on the 2C role. if he can use his strengths, especially his stick and vision skills he could be very very valuable to the sens.
You've probably said it enough. We get it: you don't like Michalek...
I rarely give up on guys and all that but I've lost interest in this kid. He's as old as I am. There are guys knocking at the door for a chance like Stone and Hoffman. When those guys get healthy I hope Regin hits the waivers or gets cut loose at the end of the year.
Regin is junk. Michalek has been just terrible and my dark horse for another awful player this year - Greening.
With so many prospects, I'd like to see them maybe consider moving one with a player to get someone in who will help now and down the road. Stone could be moveable IMO. Silf and MZ should stay, both are getting better each game.
These afternoon games have no heart
But Karlsson can't do it by himself. He needs offensive help.
This team has too many bottom six players on it. Add to that, Maclean looks as if he really doesn't know what to do with the players.
leafs don't have a goalie - none and questionable D.
mtl only has hype and carey price
sens- have goalies, have D, have coach, have the prospects and have some FWDs - but have a disappearance curse too.
Homer.
I'm not saying that we should be happy with today, but it's part of the game. One team has to lose. Sometimes it's going to be us..and that's just how it is. That's why it's the best hockey league in the world. We can constantly throw michalek under the buss, but for a guy whose used to playing with spez and getting into scoring positions it's going to take time to adapt. Last year, every one was on the michalek bandwagon. Remember when the lockout got over, and when michalek heard the news , he stopped his team bus in the middle of nowehere and took a flight back to ottawa asap.he's motivated.
If we want to be a unique as a fanbase, let's do it positively, and give the support to everyone on the team instead of tearing new assholes into them. We DONT suck on a nightly basis, so why act like leaf fans?
Must be new around here if you think everyone was on the Michalek bandwagon last year.
I don't hate him as much as some, but think we really should have moved him in the off season, that was his career year.
He is kind of the opposite of Spezza...he needs the WAY better player(play maker) to make him look as good as he does...Spezza needs the finisher to put away the plays he makes that nobody ever expects him to be able to make.
Looked like our sticks were repelling the puck. Nobody but Bishop really looked that good.
Hopefully we'll re-bound and go on a bit of a streak to get back into things.

I'm just telling certain people within the fan base to stop acting as if they know EVERYTHING. I don't doubt the fact that people are smart on here, but cmon I think Brian murray is a veteran , He knows what he's doing. And im sure no one's as disspointed in michalek as himself.
I'm not new here, and that's why i know a lot of people were on the michalek bandwagon, but hey I'm not doubting you.
Exactly, this team is quite possibly 30th in the NHL in talent. Of course people will disagree but only die hard biased Sens fans...
This comment is one of the only deserving ones to be read. This comment section makes it seem like we are in 10-15th in the conference. At least wait until we get there before bitching. lol
Really? 30th in talent? So we have the worst goaltending, worst defence and worst forwards. So why have we won any games so far with our total lack of talent?
Jeans you mean? Cos he was nowhere today.
Where was "THE BEST" Karlsson, according to Drunk Man York? Two games in two weeks by shutout to backups! That's two games with NO POINTS for Karlsson!
Best my ASS!!
The Sens are really missing Spezza's play making ability right now...
Or not...
You guys need to relax. Have a beer and realize you win some and you lose some. It's a sport.
1) We trade Michalek to Edmonton for Paajarvi -brings us a good young player and gives Edmonton a good experienced player who plays both ways(Paajarvi a left hand shot which we need).
2) We offer Greening and Condra plus a second pick or our first for Ryan O'Reilly( plus a 3rd or 4th pick if we have to give our first instead of the second). they need forwards and they get two here.
3) Then we trade Bishop for a good second round pick.
Ok then the line up is set once Spezza-Stone-an d Hoffman are back.
Paajarvi-Spezza-TUrris
Alfie-O'Reilly-Silfverberg
Hoffman-Zibby-Stone
O'Brien-Smith-Neil
Only one guy playing off wing anD that's Alfie -and he likes to attack the net from the left.
TUrris as I've said before is a sniper and IMO would be a better winger.
I don't want Murray to make any rash trades or signings.
The Sens have lost 4 regulation losses. 3 have been by 1 goal the other by 2 goals. They are not being blown out of the rink.
Bishop played a great game yesterday the rest of the team downright stunk. Other than the Carolina road game that was the worse I have seen this team this season & they lost by 1 freakin' goal.
We don't know if the Sens make the playoffs this season. The loss of Spezza is huge & Karlsson can't carry this team by himself. And yes Michalek has to be better so does Greening. Condra is not a goal scorer, guys, he is there for his defensive skills.
What I want is the Sens to give Gryba a shot. They need someone who hits. Neil didn't even lay a hard hit yesterday something they could have woken up this team.
Jake is intriguing with his trade proposals. Michalek is probably not going to hit an obscene shooting percentage like last year. Pajaarvi may just need a change of scenery with all the young kids in Ed-Mo taking room.
Now really looking to part with Condra though, kid has stamina in spades...if we don't beat the crappy Sabres or the underachieving Penguins (2-2 at home whatta joke...) then panic button needs to be taken out of the emergecy glass...
Tookieis100%Right OUT!
Bang on Sand-E. Gryb-Ah is a Mucks pick so Murray would take a long, long time to play him over his own guys, that's how NHL politics go...
Tookieis100%Right OUT!
But three of those four regulation losses have been when the sens did not have spezza and when the sens scored one goal or less.
Shit on the Habs all you want, but they still have Subban, Price, and Pacioretty...
The Leafs aren't too great this year, but JVR is proving to be an elite forward (they're now ahead of us in the standings and they dont even have Lupul)...
The B's are the same old hard to play team, except they somehow got even better with the addition of Hamilton...
The Sabres have a hot forward in Vanek, and Hodgson is coming into form, and they have a bonafide no.1 in Miller as usual.
My prediction is that we will probably make it into the playoffs, but it's not going to be a cake walk. We're getting in on the 6-8th seed. But once we're in, it's fair game, and we've given ourselves a shot to win it... This team is still rebuilding. And to say that a team in the rebuild got into the playoffs in each YEAR of the rebuild, is phenomenal.
they are a win streak away from shutting the fickle ones.
sens have good D and they have fixed goaltending - most losses are by 1 goal margins and the sens have yet to allow more than 2 goals in regulation outside of the tampa loss + the win against buffalo.
the homestand is at 1-1-1, they need to win the next one to make it 5 points out of 8 which would be acceptable.
scoring: spezza missing has thrown a wrench into everything - but its reminded us that this is still a rebuild. its also shown who really belongs (Regin) and who should be given a chance (DaCosta, Zib). Sens have depth in prospects in every aspect. I think the front end will work once PM figures out the right line combos.
one thing sens need to do is start getting more physical and nasty. sens have latent toughness, but they need to exert - esp. in their own crease.
simple fact is that the sens have become a little cute in their own crease and the other team's crease too. that needs to change.
Gryba leads the AHL in +/- with 26. He is having a very good season. Why not bring him up... I know GMs favour their own picks to others... but you also have to be fair..
to say that BM favors his own picks is just incorrect. Jim O'Brien is a muckler 1st round pick from 2007. Gryba will get his chance, the murrays are not slouches at prospect development and advancement. not to mention they handed Brian Lee chance after chance.
Actually O'brien was a Murray pick...he drafted him about 10 days after becoming GM. He was his first pick as a GM actually. It's no secret he favours his own picks, just look at Lee...

-------------------------------------
Yes Murray drafted O'Brien but with Muckler's scouting staff. He did not have time to replace them... and their record during Muckler's time as GM was not very good.
HHAHAHAHA Lee?!?!?! REALLY, handed chance after chance?!?! You try playing a sport at a high level like that once a week, with a different partner half of the time and see how well you do....if anything we killed his career. I hope I am wrong for his sake.
That was an absolutely horrible trade.
um almost every d-man other than karlsson on the current sens has had a different partner for each game this season - they seem to be holding up pretty good as sens are in the league 3rd in goals against. Brian Lee wasted a lot of opportunities - he finally rounded his game last year thanks to PM and BM couldnt wait to trade him. and btw he was never worth a 1st rd pick considering the talent drafted all around him in the 1st round, so the trade wasnt that bad, but the pick was.
Hossa - gone for the dilated one who himself is gone
Gleason - gone for Smolinski - 3rd line centreman
Sami Salo - gone for Schaefer - whose only positive was board play
Brooks Laich - gone for Bondra
Martin Havlat - traded for basically nothing - sens have absolutely no pieces remainig on the organization from that deal - the only piece that would have done anything - Barinka never dressed for the sens - never showed up
Martin Gerber - signed for a crazy deal
drafted Brian Lee instead of Kopitar or M. Staal ?!?!
let Chara walk and signed Joe Oh-no Corvo instead.....
Nobody is going to deny he's been buried in Edmonton and has a chance to rebuild his career somewhere else. It's your offer of Michalek that is bewildering and foolish.
That's how Ottawa got in this mess in the first place. Havlat, Chara, and Redden all left Ottawa for nothing via UFA / salary dump in the case of Havlat.
You can't set yourself up to lose trades badly and come out the other end smelling like roses. Love him or hate him Michalek is an established 20+ goal scorer who is capable of hitting 30 goals and posting 60+ points. Those do not grow on trees no matter how badly you want them to. Not to mention his contract value is excellent for the other all around things he brings to the game (Size, Speed, excellent defensive play)
Working on something for this morning.
as someone very familiar with the Bsens I can tell you that before the lockout ended Gryba was very much fourth on the depth chart down there behind Benoit/wire/bor o
Is this the same rumour/story you hinted at last week? just curious...
Partly.
Yes but the depth chart is set by the sens brass. Gryba was outperforming Boro and they were both defensive demen. How do you account for this?
