While this obviously wasn`t the result the Senators were looking for in the series opener, there were still some positives to take away.
Ottawa was the better team for large stretches and showed they can definitely hang with the Rangers. With that said, the Sens have to find a way to pick up the pace, ramp up the intensity level and start hitting the Rangers at every opportunity.
The goal now for Ottawa is simple- find a way to get the split with a win at MSG on Saturday.
The Sens were on the ice for practice this morning but were missing a few key players, including Daniel Alfredsson, Erik Karlsson and Chris Neil.
If fans were hoping to see Mika Zibanejad come to the rescue, don't count on it. Murray spoke to the media today and suggested Zibanejad may have suffered a concussion during a collision at Binghamton practice. If he does have a concussion, you have to think that will end the young Swede's season.
The New York Rangers are the top team in the Eastern Conference, but if their Game 1 performance is the best they have to offer, I think the Senators can make this a competitive series.
Back at it tomorrow night at 7:30 PM.
- Ranted about this a little bit on Twitter last night but CBC may want to reconsider allow Glen Healy to work this series. His hatred for the Senators is abundantly clear and it comes through in his comments. Based on some of the replies I saw on Twitter, I'm not the only one that was infuriated by Healy last night.
- Not the result Sens fans were hoping for in Game 1 but it sure is nice to have playoff hockey back. Watched the game at St. Louis on Elgin last night and the place was packed with Sens fans. Gotta love this time of year!
I hope coach told them to stop taking so many 40 foot "shots"..that's not going to work on the rangers with the shot blocking and goalie.
The most frustrating, other than the commentating, was our Power Play. For the first time in a long time, calls were going our way... but again, we could not capitalize on those chances!
We have to get the PP moving again to be strong.
Other than that... this was game 1 - nothing to worry about - YET.
GO SENS GO!!!
As you said Chirp, it's a 7 game series...all we need to do it win our games at home and take one in their barn and we're laughing!
I can't stress how important it was for our confidence moving forward to win that last period. I believe that tomorrow night, the sens will create more space and be in the right places at the right time!
The bad:
HUGE bummer about Zibby...can't even play in bingo.
Healy has to go!
I know it's playoff hockey, but to me the hit looked extremly similar to Bitz's hit on Clifford in the Van/LA game the night before, and Bitz got 2 games?!
Really hope the NHL as a whole can become more consistant with how they call the games.
It seems like they only suspend guys when someone gets hurt.
I'm not calling for Richards to be suspended, but not even a 2 min boarding call?
I dunno, it was frustrating because that same shift the Rangers go down and score.
Just venting...back at it tomorrow night boys!
No one said it was gonna be easy!!!
GO SENS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOO!!!!!!!!
The Islanders came into the Corel Centre for game 1 and beat us 3-0.
Lots of hockey left to play folks!
Go Sens!
Yes, he needs to be better. Huge Anderson fan, but he needs to steal us one.
yah, since when is Healy an "expert".
Andy is at his best when he is controlling rebounds...not so much last night unfortunately. I'm confident he'll be solid tomorrow night!
So youère an expert?
It's the playoffs. EVERYONE needs to finish their checks, hit hard, and move their damn feet. Some guys were complete no-shows last night.
I was really disappointed in our bottom six players. I know Neil's probably playing hurt so he can get a pass, and I thought Condra played a decent game, but Daug, Winnie, O'brien and ESPECIALLY Zack Smith didn't do what we needed them to do. These guys aren't skilled players so they need to provide energy by skating hard and hitting everything that moves, but they didn't do that. Smith was so useless last night.
Also disappointed with Spezza and Michalek. Spezza wasn't moving his feet for most of that game and he's just such a strong skater that when he is moving well he's dominating. Michalek was invisible...
I thought Foligno had the best game for the Sens. Yes he had that one brutal give away that led to the Richards goal but I really thought he had a strong game. Also thought Phillips and Gilroy played very solid games. The rest of the d was horrible though.
Like I said I can handle losing, but I can't handle losing if we didn't give it our all. We all know the boys are capable of playing much much better than that and I expect they will from here on out.
Hopefully the game 1 jitters are over and we can get back in this series. Sorry for the novel folks!
Go Sens Go!!
Sens in 6
2nd if Spezza wants to be captain its time to MAN up ...And i hope stache retools the bottom 6
And swtich alfie with spezza and turris with milo
That is all
carkner clears the front of the net, blocks shots, intimidates and lays huge hits. Carkner is made for playoff hockey and a strong veteran voice in the room.
but who should he replace, gilroy or cowen?
I'd also take out Daugavins and O'brien for Klinkhammer and Konopka. You know Klinkhammer and Zenon will finish their checks.
lines
greening spezza alfredsson
klinkhammer turris mm9
foligno smith neil
obrien winchester condra
much better size on each line, we would have skill size and toughness on each line, very balanced, boyle should be taken out given any reasonable oppertunity frankly I hope carkner gets him.
Go sens
Def Gilroy...Put Carks with Cowen and reduce his minutes, he will calm down and get back to what he was doing so well, hitting and being strong on the man!
Kuba Karlsson
Phillips Gonchar
Cowen Carkner
The CBC is going through a major downsizing right now.
I suspect that any complaints will only land on the "he got fired last Friday" desk.
Dont bother dude, it aint gonna change shit, people have been complaining for years and they just keep doing it. Your letters/emails go straight to the garbage bin. Big brother dont listen to little brother.
Carkner must draw back in, but the right call will not happen... Gonchar is the one who was laughable last night.
Again I ask and beg for anyone to answer me... what does Gonchar bring to the Sens?????
PP - he was the beyond terrible, he could not enter the zone or keep the puck in
Defensively - he was on for 3 of the 4 goals.
Physicallity - please he cant check himself!
So please can anyone tell me what he brings.
Take him out and put in Carkner... and I would love to see Boyle try that on Karlsson again... it may cause an instigator but we may never notice Boyle again in this series!
Still one more year of his crap isn't there?
Yup another year,
truthfully, he seems like a true gentleman, and hate that he is struggling this bad, but at the moment, he really is our worst D-man... and even though I have been critical of Gilroy, he was one of our better offensive D-man, since they focused so hard on Karlsson, it gave Gilroy more room.
But Gonchar's game right now is seriously hurting the team... the right thing has to be done, and he needs a view from the pressbox... he may not even know how bad he is playhing until he is sent the message
cowen trying to do too much and he just needs to relax and let the game come to him and stop trying to force a play.
What your asking wont happen, its GM'ing 101, you dont get a player, sign him to a retarded amount of money and then sit him when he shits the bed...
Your asking Murray to admit he made a bad move there....wont happen.
As for your question, what does he bring to the table, how about 5.5mil...
Carkner should be inserted on he wing! Neil-Smith-Cark ner
Philips - Cowen (Get Cowen to use his size for fuck sakes!)
Kuba - Karlsson (Use the Duo in more critical situations)
Gilroy - Gonchar (hopefully they lean back a little bit so they don't award the rangers with some free break aways)
Carkner maybe throw Carkner on a wing and then play him on the D during the PK
foligno-turris-smith
neil-winchester-greening
kinkhammer-obrien-condra
karlsson-kuba
philips-carkner
gonchar-cowen
this is how i would like to see the linup tomorrow!!!
I like this combo. Don't think it'll happen, but, I'd welcome it if it did. Good call, Dackell.
Turris Spezza Alfie
9mm Folingo Neil
Klink Smith Konopka
Greening JOB Condra
Bottom Six big and tough gritty all they need too do is smash
Turris was shit faceoffs get him on the wing he have a chance to shot more till he can get bigger in off season
Folingo is a ppg player at centre but him back he was 100 percent in faceoffs last night
Neil spreads toughness too all 3 lines
Carkner Karlsson - karlsson does all work carkner protects
Kuba Gonchar
Cowen Philips
I dont buy that Konopka should come in either. He will take penalties, which is not what we need. We need Neil like line-walking, not Konopka calls. and thats not a knock on Konopka, just that the refs call him for boarderline things because of the name on his back. He's a liability for penalties. I like Klinkhammer coming in, though.
Only change should be Carkner for toughness, replce either Gilroy or Cowen. It was evry evident that we were getting pushed around and were intimidated, not saying that inserting Carkner will eliminate that as Boyle is 6'6 240lbs and can probably hold his own vs Carks but the whole Rangers top 6 is abusing us, hell even Richards and Gabby are hitting!
I would do this
Alfie-Spezz-Butler
Greening-Turris-Michalek
Daugavins-Foligno-Smith
Konopka-Winchester-Neil
Sit Condra and O'Brien till the fire burns and they actually want to hit someone. Too soft and don't mix it up. Hell this isn't choir practice its the F-ing Playoffs.
SERENITY NOW!
GO SENS GO!
MacLean says he is considering starting with the Michalek-Spezza -Alfredsson line in Game 2. But it may also be an in-game adjustment.
i have always hated watching that being our top line. it is the most obvious thing to pack all our top skill on 1 line. only 1 problem, they have never had chemistry. that line never seems to click.
cant wait to have 2 lines with real top 6 players.
no matter what the results are of this playoffs, we can all be more than proud of the accomplishments .
Ive really liked klinks play-he is big and started to use his size down the stretch, fast, pretty responsible defensively and he always gets the puck to the crease area/slot (often when he is in the corners or behind the net) we just need more guys in those areas.
carkner in i think we definately will see happen.
Not sure who else would draw out besides daugy and gilroy but i would also be interested with seeing how butler draws in. Ive always liked his quick snapshot when he does use it. its just not often.
I think the sens finally saw what they can do in the 3rd when they are competing and not losing all the battles, which i thought they lost the majority of last night. So i think they know they can win if they put that effort in a full game. Sens win tomorrow- thats my coaching for the day!
Hoffman - Spezza - Michalek
Greening - Turris - Alfredsson
Klinkhammer - Foligno - Winchester
Dzuirzynski - Z. Smith - Neil
extras - Butler, Daugavins, Condra, Konopka
Kuba - Karlsson
Cowen - Carkner
Phillilps - Gilroy/Gonchar
Anderson - Bishop
Hoffman... you have to be kidding. Might as well scratch Turris and bring in DaCosta while you're at it.
Thanks EH_Matt
I just left my complaint (although it probably won't make any difference) and I hope everyone else that reads this blog does the same.
Listening to Healy describe how dirty a play Neil had as they showed a clear replay of the Ranger tripping himself and falling during the second period was infuriating.
He is by far the most blatantly biased announcer I have ever heard and it needs to stop NOW.
Sens will bounce back and stop panicking next game which was really the issue all game. Too many horrible plays getting the puck out of the defensive zone all night.
We can blame individual players (I think Greening and Cowen both had particularly bad games) but ultimately it was a poor game for everyone wearing a Sens jersey last night.
They'll be better tomorrow and we will even this series.
LMAO!!! Hoffman!!! he's 5'11 170lbs!!
Thanks thats the laugh I needed for today!
He can be negative, but some of the shit ppl suggest, it's the words of madmen.
for playoffs we might not be able to just role 4 lines as talent gets average.
here's an example
mm9 spezza alfredson
foligno turris winchester
klinkhammer smith neil
spare parts line
condra konopka carkner
defense
kuba karlsson
cowen phillips
gilroy gonchar
anderson
bishop.
it just gives us more options and better balance on 3 lines, the spare parts are for key moments and to change momentum when needed.
I may be over thinking everything, not sure
what I'm sure of is GO SENS!
I thought Gonchar did not play well... but they will not take him out of the lineup. I did not think Gilroy was that bad. But then a lot of the team did not play to their capabilities.
Tried to listen to the Team 1200 and watch the game.. but it's about a 30 sec delay.. very annoying. Watching the game tomorrow with the sound off. The longer I listened to those 2 morons the madder I got. Hopefully some good signs at SBP on Monday.. requesting Healey go back to Toronto and stay there.
As Chirp said... if that is the best game the Rangers have... we do know the Sens can be better than they were last night.
I think O'Brien played a pretty good game. The PK was pretty good last night.. but the PP was awful. I believe Cameron is the PP guy... well if he can't get it to work.. then maybe someone else comes in to take his job.. hello KK..
Too bad about Mika... really wanted to see how he did in Binghamton.
How is Silfverberg's team doing in the playoffs?
Rangers want to be big and tough... hello Gryba or Borowiecki -- how about Ben Blood... Kinda ridiculous statement.. but those 3 certainly bring what the Sens were lacking last night... nastiness... no way big brave Boyle would take out 5ft 11 Karlsson -- with one of those 3 on the ice...
Boyle just sunk to the depths of Lapierre & Burrows in my book with his actions last night. It okay to play a physical game.. but that was way out of line and a cowardly play.
I wanted to punch his face when he said that. Cant stand that fuckin goof
im slightly worried for zib's career. thats his 2nd concussion in i think 4 months. i understand that concussions happen to pretty much all hockey players at some point of their career. but zib's play style involves him getting in the dirty areas and playing the body a lot.. that is where most concussions usually happen. hope im just being over concerned about nothing too serious.
I simply don't understand why Dean Brown isn't calling the Sens series. I mean that is pure ideoticy from CBC.
I have already complained and hope everyone else does too
Marty St Louis ... 5 ft 7 180 lbs...
RW... 25G 49A 74Pts.. 77 GP..
Career ... 931 GP.. 852pts..
Don't rag on smaller players dude. Maybe Hoffman could make an impact! Anything can happen in the playoffs.
all I want to add to your statement is dean brown might have been promised the boston series when the sens were set to play the bruins, late night on the last day of the regular season it changed. That's my guess.
St. Louis and Hoffman shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath.
The look on his face when the Avs fans started chanting Andy, you could tell it was nice and emotional for him.
Maybe it could give him more confidence knowing he has the full supports of the 19tho plus!
just a thought
For game 2, we need to come out and punish the rangers, what boyle did to Karlsson was unacceptable, and youd have to think after seeing replays the sens will not allow that to happen again, at least i hope not!
http://www.cbc.ca/contact/
I dropped a complaint as well.
I mentioned this about 2 months ago, I was shat upon...Good on you to realize he might not be the same as when we drafted him.
Thanks for the Address, I just filed my complaint with the CBC, Healy, the "Second Stringer", the "Cut" is ruining my viewing.
"Andy" will be better, game 2 is where we break their hearts!
yep, some players seem to have concussions all their career and others seem to avoid it, even if they do play physical (for example chris neil, i cant remember if he's ever had a concussion)
i put puempel in the same boat as zib now with the concussions.
I agree with you completely.
The thing I've noticed most with Bob Cole is that he'll get Karlsson/Goncha r mixed up. 55/65. And from where he's sitting, I can't even blame him for that.
Glen Healy should just cover the Leafs playoff games.
My favourite Cole call from last night was after talking all about how Boyle dragged Karlson into the penalty box with him and how it was a great trade off for the Rangers, he kept calling Gonchar, Karlson for the in suing play. The guy is completely off his rocker...
From GM Hockey:
Brynas wins game two 3-2 in OT. No points for Silfverberg. I believe the first two games were on the road. They will be going for the sweep this Saturday and Sunday.
Instead he goes with Greening-Spezza -Michalek. That's not a too good first PP unit. And we wonder why we don't score on the PP.
Hard pill to swallow, but that's playoff hockey and we didn't expect to win all the games. So put that one behind us and move to Saturday, where we'll take game 2 and even the series.
We had some good, mixed with some ugly, and all in all, it wasn't our best game. Most of our shots were at the crest, not many opportunities to pick corners. The 1st that eluded the great Lundqvist was a tip that went where, top corner. If we are going to beat him, it'll be shots like that or getting traffic in front of the net so he can't see them. Most outside shots without traffic will be stopped. But that's not just Lundqvist, that's most NHL goalies in general.
I haven't read all the posts, but if I can take one MAJOR positive from that game, Condra finally scored. How many games, open nets, breakaways and penatly shots were missed? It's about time he did and that alone will be a big boost to the young kids ego and the guys around him. He took a bad hit, looked a little bloody, but maybe we'll see another side of Condra going forward. Maybe enough to spark his line too. At this stage, anything can be a positive.
I would like to see Carkner in Saturday, not that Gilroy didn't do ok, but he just looked a little scattered. I think Carks will give a little more stability to the guys, put them more at ease. If anything, clobber someone if they need it. He's a bigger body and we can use that.
Anderson, Hmmm... Not the best game he's had. I'm sure he would like at least 2 of those back. Hoping for a better performance than last night. On to that, how many games will Ottawa wait if Anderson doesn't shine? And will they really go with Bishop, or will we see the rise of Lehner to take the reins, like he did in Bingo's playoffs last year. I said at the beginning of the year, if Ottawa makes it, wouldn't it be something if Lehner was called up to save the day and he did exactly that!! Anyway, just throwing stuff out there.
that alone is enough to separate them if you watch hockey with any regularity. There's no defending him anymore. Should have retired 10 years ago
Yeah we're all very much fed up of seeing Greening. On the first line and first powerplay no less. He's mroe than welcomed to be on the checking line. No extremely late rounder (obviously aside from Datsuyk) should be privileged to be on a top 6, let alone, top 3, let alone powerplay, regardless of which PP line it is. Unfortunately he still has 2 more years left on his contract. I assume when Condra's expires after next year, they'll have Zibanejad or Silfverberg on one of those top lines and simply schaff Greening on the 3rd line and wait for the end of his contract. No hate.
Be here when he is done if there is a sweep he will be here by game 4
http://www.pressconnects.com/article/20120413/SPORTS/204130326/B-Sens-Ottawa-reach-3-year-affiliation-agreement?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE
Guess you don't bother to vote either. Can't complain if you don't try to change things......... ..
Like others said it is only game one, Saturday is another day.
Anderson has to step up his game, he has been really good but we kind of need great to compete with Lundqvist.
2) Florida game: there are bodies in Party City! I wonder what it feels like to sit on 10 years of dust... That arena hasn't seen so many humans in quite a while.
3) 67s game: how did we watch hockey in SD for so long? I barely remember watching in black & white but SD, even in colour, truly sucks.
4) Dean Brown rules!
Another crazy game in Pitts....lookin g like another big night in my pool!
It's looking that way now but just wait and see what Zibby can do next year before writing him off.
I believe Zibby will be good, but Couturier had 13 regular season goals and a hat trick tonight. He was obviously NHL ready at the draft. Mind you it doesn't hurt having a supporting cast like he does.
bingo...support ing cast. Yes, he is ready now but will he be better than Zibby in a few years? We'll see...
So true... like Carkner playing the wing? Imagine. That would be awful.
a bear on roller skates would have a better luck in the offensive zone
I completely agree! Anderson has been holding us back all year
By that time he will have the eyesight of Cole, and will be wearing one of those "I've fallen and I can't get up" necklaces.
Iguess what I am trying to say is the guy is a fucktard.
First night in my own bed in a long time.. Going to miss Brandon.. Great 4 years of my life! Off to ottawa Sunday! #pumped
here's other fans
pens, down 2-0 to philly. Lost both home games as fans dressed up as bears
best players are healthy and fleurry lets in 11 goals in 2 games
van down 2-0 to the 8 seed kings, lost both home games, possibly luongo's last game as a canuck, one sedin sister hurt prior to series, luongo 8 goals against in 2 games.
other upsets going on, we have no pressure of being a top dog. We have to come back and make a statement. Friday night bertuzzi made webber pay for the last games shinanigans, game 2 vs new york we need a statement of carkner, neil or smith to drop em with boyle asap. Then let the games begin
Go Sens!
It's on every news channel.
I have to say the majority of your com-mentors on this site, either never played hockey or never watched hockey. The guys with the most playoff experience showed up Thursday night, spezza, alfie, philips. Smith played well but he can play better better, the other guys showed their inexperience. Now i am not a coach but i will suggest three things 1) gilroy never put on a sens jersey again, i know ppl love his speed but at what cost? he's offense is nothing to write home about(i mean has anyone missed more open nets than this guy? 2) can this guy be more of a defensive liability? he pinches when he should stand pat and stands pat (flat footed) when he should chase. 3) J.Winchester is not in the right head space to play in these playoffs, he is too afraid to take a hit and its too late in the yr to wait for him to come around. replace these guys with tough ppl....hint hint.
I am tired of listening to lame reasons why the sens lost, they lost and they were OUT PLAYED BADLY. They need to change their game plan on the fly if need be, hit more, finish checks and for god sake cover the open man(gabroik and richards). Chip and chase and get in the blue shirts faces....dont play like pussies.
from a humble fan

Tooks you are bang on, on this one bud, it is too bad politics takes precedence over hockey...shame
GO SENS
Someone mentioned that if Anderson falters do they bring in Bishop.... I say Lehner... I'm not at all discounting what Anderson has done this season... I just did not copy the peice I was responding to..
Excited to hear Stone is coming... Too bad Zibby is hurt.
Boyle = Lapierre & Burrows..
Brynäs holds on for 1-0 win and a 3-0 series lead. Silfver+Järnkro k pointless again. Brynäs have a chance to sweep at home tomorrow.
Game 4 goes tomorrow. If they win, they could have the parade as early as Monday/Tuesday and he could be available for game 4 on Wednesday. Hope they hold the parade early
call up francis lessard!
a friend told me that stone was injured in his last game of the playoffs, wonder if he is just coming to see the doctors or something.
but tonights win was all thanks to 22 year old Brynas netminder Niklas Svedberg (wonder if any NHL teams look at him as a undrafted player to sign, this year the SEL has produced about 4 or 5 very impressive goalies, although atleast half of them are already drafted)
game 4 is tomorrow, i will do my best to find and post a stream for anyone interested in watching the game. might have him here sooner than some thought!
