Considering both teams were playing in a back to back situation, the first period had a terrific pace to it. Both the Sens and Flyers made defensive mistakes that led to great scoring chances at both ends. Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Neil tallied for the Sens in the opening frame but the Flyers scored three of their own to hold a 3-2 lead through the first twenty minutes.
In the second period you could see fatigue start to creep into the Sens game a little bit. The Flyers stretched the lead to 4-2 on a power play goal by Matt Read and it looked like Philly was in control.
And then the third period happened.
On a night where the Sens just didn't seem to have their legs, the 3rd period switch was flipped and the Sens got right back in the game. First Colin Greening scored to cut the lead to one then a little over three minutes later Erik Karlsson tied it up. With overtime looming, a point shot by Filip Kuba hit a body out front and found a way past Bryzgalov. Foligno added the empty netter and capped off another ridiculous third period comeback.
Huge two points for the Sens as they get set to head out on the road. They are in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, New York on Thursday and close out the week in Montreal on Saturday.
With the win, Ottawa leap frogs the New Jersey Devils for 5th in the East. Games in hand still an issue but Ottawa is now just three points back of the division leading Boston Bruins.
- Another solid game for Kyle Turris. He now has eight points in his first ten games in a Sens uniform and has helped stabilize the team's second line. People knew all about his offensive game but I've been really impressed with his play without the puck. Very strong defensively and always seems to be in good position. Had a good night in the faceoff circle too, going 12 for 16 for 75%
- Erik Karlsson is really, really good. Another multi-point game and now has 41 points on the season. Played just over 24 minutes tonight and was a +5. Incredible.
- 14th sellout of the season for the Sens tonight and 6th straight. Shouldn't come as a big surprise the way things have gone at SBP this year. Unbelievably fun team to watch right now.
Have watched the kid since he got here, and always seem to be amazed by him. Can't even imagine how much better our D will be when he really hits his prime.
Bittersweet fact that we're so close to the Bruins in points.. yet they have 5 games in hand. We could potentially drop to 9th-10th by the end of this week due to the fact that the points are so tight, and every other team behind us has 3-4 games in hand on us.. Ugh.
With Staal, Neal, Crosby, and Letang out, we've got to be able to at least take 1 point if not both points from the Pens next game.. but we'll see.
What are the chances that Karlsson does not sign with us?
This is something that has been bothering me, because I would like to think that Erik likes it here in Ottawa and wouldn't want to sign somewhere else for a ridiculous contract.. here's hoping I'm right guys.
I'm sure he will stay. Lots of Swedes coming in... he is an RFA and Sens control him...
He is just amazing. Come on Murray... just send him a blank cheque...
I would think he signs with us obviously, silly question.. but should he choose not to, wouldn't be surprised if Detroit gave him an offer. Legendary organization, tons of swedes, and incredibly well respected across sports fans/leagues, plus they need a franchise D once Lidstrom is gone..
Kuba is REALLY pissing me off, he is playing too well, I stil hope we can move him, and if he keeps his play up maybe for a 2nd?? He is making it tough to want him gone though.
Karlsson...Lock him up for as long as is humanly possible. Every day I think he can't get better he does. We all know he can score, but +5....COME ON
Karlsson has been superb this year, but Kuba has been so solid defensively all year long. I can't believe how well he plays for us game after game. After last year, I don't think anybody knew he could impact a game like he did tonight, both offensively and defensively. Crazy stuff from Kubs.
Karlsson, not surprised. He just keeps getting better and better every game, both offensively and defensively. Unlike Wade Redden, I would be happy to see the Sens sign him to a big deal.
I didn't expect Turris would get 8 points in his first 10 games. His hands are soft, his shot is lethal, he has great vision, and he's very reliable defensively.
Butler, Greening, Neil, Foligno, and Smith all had great games. Nice to see Foligno and Greening contribute a little offensively.
One helluva ride so far! Thanks guys!
No way, never gonna happen. I am certain that he is well treated by the sens and he is a stand-up guy. He will follow Alfredsson and retire a senator. LOTS of time to enjoy cheering for him!
...and Kuba had a great game today, I really have to take back what I said at the beginning of the season...Still, for the good of the reubuild, he needs to be moved at the deadline...
...as far as Karlsson, it's not a case of IF he will sign, the concern is for HOW MUCH? At this point, the starting number will be $5.5 MM per year, but I can see him getting close to $7 MM per if he keeps up this pace...
The problem is, we're going to have a gaping hole in our top 6 when Alfie retires. Hopefully he plays next year so that we get another year to develop potential guys like Zbad, Silfverburg, etc.
There were those who didn't have the Sens getting to 50 points for the whole year...just think back to all those experts and their 30th place predictions (Hockey News, I am looking in your direction)...
As far as the Leafs, they suck again and they always will - they are scum...
seriously....super fat and wicked ugly. And now, sad, hurt and disappointed. Lock up your freezers, the fat-uglies are hunting for their ice cream...
Up yours Philly...
Go Sens
~Peluso
I think we'll be fine when Alfie retires when Mika, Silfverberg, Stone, etc, all come up and make the team.
This is where an FA signing will have to come into play - if Alfie retires and with Kuba gone, there will be some decent funds to sign a top six forward...
Just a hunch, but I think Alfie will call it a career after this season...
As good as Karlsson is, I think those 8+ year contracts are RIDICULOUS!
Can't wait til my Turris jersey is ready at the scank!
I agree, but think out of anyone on our team he is the one and only that I wouldn't have anything negative to say.
I agree with fail4nail , but having him locked down with all the talent coming and here id sleep alot better knowing we wont have too worry about a offer sheet !!!
Going to bring back z-bad after he gets a week to rest. Is that
Even possible? Can he come back to the team mid season? And are
You hearing anything?
Easily the most improved player on the team. He's like Mike Fisher 2.0 and has all the attributes I loved in Mike, but now as our 3rd line centre: wins faceoffs, scores clutch goals, kills penalties, fights, works his ass off... fun to watch.
And we're only paying him 700G's.
This guy is awesome.
I love this team.
Ottawa 43 22 15 6 50 135 143 14-8-1 8-7-5 7-1-2 Won 1
Ottawa and Boston have very close home records, but Boston is better team away, and has an unbelievable + in the Goals For vs Goals against ratio.
Although, Boston has 5 games in hand at the moment, you gotta hand it to Ottawa for finding ways to win games!!!!!!
KJ
the only thing "ALL" the so-called experts could agree on was that the Sens would finish last - just goes to show you just how much they know. You just have to listen to Garrioch snorting and choking for 3 mins to understand their totla lack of hockey smarts.
Anderson with the big save in the 2nd when down by two, then great comeback, and beautiful goal by EK. Great team effort; most teams would have mailed it in in the third, but not this group.
Awesome, they deserve tons of credit.
E
2nd Kuba
3rd Anderson
Obviously
Man. What a come back. Feels real good, especially after listening to the sportsnets yahoos critique the Sens "poor" performance in between periods.
KJ
With the new CBA pending its a wait and see
Regardless, what an awesome team to watch. Keep doing what you're doing PMac!
Did you not watch the skills competition? This kid is basically part of the Alfredsson family, and Alfredsson is this team. While some of the events are going on you can see Karlsson carrying one of Alfie's kids around on his skates skating him around the rink. No way does Karlsson not stay in Ottawa. Alfie said his kids basically demanded if he picks first during the ASG he has to pick Karlsson.
I figure if Eklund can post rumours, why can’t I? Is it because my rumours are unsubstantiated and aren’t based on sound hockey knowledge? That can’t be, or else half of the sport reporting world would be unemployed. So here we go;
NYI: P A Parenteau (RW/C 1.25M) Originally from Hull, this 24 year old was second in scoring for the Isles last season. He’s a thrill to watch in the offensive zone and has excellent hands. While he has an outside shot at breaking 70PTS this year, he’ll have to find another 13 goals to hit 20 again this season. He plays RW but can shift to centre if need be. He needs to fill out, but once he does he’ll have one hell of a career; why not trade him, NYI? Sounds like something the Isle would do.
CAR: Ponikarovsky (RW/LW – 1.5M) While he’ll only be 32 by the times the playoffs role around, he’ll be sure to poop his pants like a geriatric if he makes it on to a contender (3G & 10PTS in 38GP). He plays great defensively, and has the size to battle in the corners, but doesn’t always cash in on his big frame or scoring ability. We all saw enough of him as a Leafs to know that he’s a pansy; next.
MTL: Moen (LW – 1.5M) Odds of Ottawa and Montreal making a trade? Slim to none. Can’t I wish? Moen is 30 years old and has tons of playoff experience, managing 4 GWG in 68 playoff games (11G, 19PTS). The guy plays hard and was a nightmare to match-up against in the cup finals a few years back. Plus, he’s on track for a career year in points while playing for the HABS! What’s not to like?
ANA: Blake (LW – 4M) A bargain; that’s what you call a guy’s price that’s 38, has played a total of 6 games this season and hasn’t scored. He may be losing his game, but he’s still fairly quick and knows how to play in the offensive third. While missing 35 games with a wrist injury isn’t ideal, the short season will give him a good shot at being fresh for a playoff run. Why not throw away a 7th on him?
EDM: Smyth (LW – 6.25M) The Sens need to trade Spezza, and Smyth obviously dislikes the people in Edmonton, so it’s a perfect fit. MAN I hate Smyth rumours... almost as much as I hate the yearly ‘trade Spezza’ talk that Eklund “reports”.
CGY: Stempniak (RW – 1.9M) He’s 28 and a pending UFA; that’s the good news. I like Stempniak’s hustle on the special teams and his release is pretty deadly, but the compliments end there. While he has a career average of just over 20 goals per 82 game season, Stempniak has only managed to hit the 20 goal mark twice over 7 seasons in the NHL. He’s a streaky scorer with almost non-existent playoff production and limited big game experience; why do we need him again? Because he had that one good run, remember?
I think it would be nice for Ottawa to acquire some scoring depth for a playoff run (if we're in a position come the deadline). It's just a list of UFAs I feel are available, as well as their ups and downs. I don't know what they're worth, but as I've said before, I wouldn't like to see anyone other than Lee and Butler (and possibly Kuba OR Gonchar instead of Lee) traded, and obivously we don't want to part with any early round picks.
I might come back with a list of Sens... if I don't get heckled.
Thoughts?
THe Sens shouldn't trade anyone right now. They are building team chemsitry right now, and it should be tampered with.
KJ
GO Sens GO!
I hope that people stop talking about this so called rebuild. Did we go out last year and trade the likes of Spezza, Alfie, Michalek, Karlsson? No we got ride of players whose time had come. The problem with us Sens fans is we are too damn passionate about our team and hate to admit when its time to move a player out and make a change. Ottawans hate and are afraid of change.
Bottom line, no one not even Murray had a clue that we had a few gems in the making down in the minors in the likes of Greening, Condra and Daugavins. Guess it just takes some players a few more years to develop than others.
Plus Murray and his team has done an amazing job the last few years with drafting Smith, Karlsson and Cowen.
Can't wait for this road trip to start! Hope to see the Sens play the way they did this past weekend and see what tyoe of result they get against the Pens.
One of the players that I would like see picked up would be Blake (ANA). Wouldn't cost Sens much and he shoots the puck tons. Good on the power play and can play on any of the top three lines also a UFA at years end. Sens will need some depth if they make the playoffs.
I also think a good experienced goalie would help and Nabokov (NYI) has put together some decent numbers lately and comes very cheap ($600K). Sure better than Auld.
I agree to an extent; no way should we trade character guys like Smith or Foligno; but Butler and Lee come in and out of the line up and haven't found permanent spots on the roster. I don't think shipping them out would mess with team chemistry too much. It's the complete opposite for guys like Kuba and Gonchar; you take away one of those two and you throw a stick in the spokes of the offensive, for a few games at least... Still, the coaching staff has my complete trust, and whatever happens, I'm sure the coaches can handle it.
Very interesting stat brought up during the broadcast yesterday. Over the past 20 years, only 4 Defensemen have finished in the top 5 in assists. Those 4 were:
1) Ray Bourque
2) Niklas Lidstrom x 2
3) Brian Leetch
4) Sergei Zubov
Good luck Bryan Murray....
Anyone know who his agent is?
Everybody assumed that Kuba would be gone by the deadline at the latest but his play and the removal of Rundblad from the equation makes that no longer a slam dunk. I can even see a scenario where he signs another contract with the sens.
Murray is already on record as saying that he doesn't want to sign any 30+ UFA this off season so I can't see him trading for a veteran unless they have an expiring contract and even then I'm not convinced he makes a move.
I still believe that Murray and Melnykj's priority is making this team better next year and the year after that rather than a short term boost for a better shot at the playoffs this season.
It might have been the alcohol last night, but all I could think about was - what if we won a cup this year for Alfie?
Pipe dream? Probably, but this was supposed to be a last place campaign...this team is fast, hits everyone in sight, puts pucks on net...what's not to like? Anderson gets hot at the right time...watch out.
As for Kuba's play, his value likely won't get any higher than it is now imo and I'd like to see the Sens move him if they can get a 2nd or a decent D prospect in return. I don't think a 2nd would be asking too much if we can ship him to a team in need of a minute-eating top 4 guy like Philly. Lee can step in and replace Kuba without too much of a drop-off in overall team D.
Lastly, I have to say that it's been a long time since I've enjoyed watching the Sens as much as I do this year. They just seem to have an "it" about them this year. Hopefully they can come out of this road trip in decent shape and continue to push towards the playoffs, which leads me to this question:
If we hold our ground to the trade deadline, are we buyers? If so, who's expendable from a prospect standpoint? This scenario scares me as the management might want to grab the low-hanging fruit that an immediate playoff berth would bare at the expense of some of our prospect depth. Thoughts?
How About Maclean as a Jack Adams candidate(other favorite Dineen)
Their offense continues to roll and if they can become a little more organized defensively in the coming weeks and play with a little more discipline, they could become one of the top teams not only in the east, but in the entire league.
A team that has this much toughness, speed, heart, resilience, youth, veteran leadership, confidence, and belief in their system and eachother is going to be a serious threat that I don't think any team would want to have to play.
This next string of road games remaining this month is going to determine whether or not the Sens are a fringe playoff team or a legitimate eastern conference contender.
Without a doubt, this is by far the most exciting Sens team to watch. Alfie/Spezza/Se lf-centered-Ass hole being able to score 3-12 pts/game wasn't even this exciting.
There's no reason to not be completely thrilled with the season so far.
"Alfie's one of the best guys in the league. His words in between periods are like gold."
I guess Alfie isn't just a "lead by example" kind of captain after all.
Let the young guys have the experience. It will only further their development.
Love this team.
Caught that too! Was going to mention it in today's blog but it's interesting to hear that Alfie is more than just a lead-by-example type. Would love to see a 24/7 Behind the Scenes type thing on the Sens.
If we are looking to make deals at the deadline I think other GMs will be asking about Noesen, Pumpel and Silfverburg as they probably realise that Zbad is out of their reach. To my mind unless we bring in somebody who is under 25 and already relatively established in the NHL it's not worth upsetting the apple cart.
I think Murray has made his big trade of the season and the early signs are it was a good one for the sens.
Sounds about right, but if he wants a shorter deal it could be upwards of 6.5-7 Mil hit a season which I dont know if Sens would do it. It would def hurt us in the long run cap wise.
Longterm is definitely the answer!
What a phenomenal team.
Shout out to Kuba.
Not sure if we can pull Ziby back as suggested above but thats the kind of playoff addition I would like to see happen.
Anyone know how Petersson DaCosta are doing in the AHL this year, just wondering what they could bring if they come up.
We might have the playoff pieces to add in house.
Could Silverburg also be an option.
with his staff are doing a fabulous job yet what do I find on the Monday morning after ?..wannabe coaches/GM's trading and signing new players and prematurely trading our greatest asset
namely our captain, stupid and silly as well as fucking ridiculous....c elebrate you freakin morons !it's January 9th and we have 50 points..don't touch a thing for gods sake
I trust BM to sign EK 65 when the time is right which ain't right now..enjoy the ride and GOSENSGO
All I hear is Getz to TO and Perry to Ottawa, my source says only small talk as of yet.
Could this actually happen?
Perry is 26 and only making 5.325 with 2 years left.
I'd rather not see Ottawa buy/sell this year. The only piece we were missing this season was a true 2nd line C and we got him in Turris. Mind you, if we aren't going to sign Kuba I'd rather see BM move him before the deadline for a pick or two so we don't lose him for nothing, but beyond that, I'd say keep it together and go out fighting.
All the excitment aside, we are still rebuilding, still learning, still finding our way. We are going to suffer some loses to some very good teams and we'll experience even harder to digest loses to teams we should beat, that's the name of the game. Yes, we appear to have a good chance to hold a playoff spot, but teams are SO close, we have a good chance we may not. And I'm not upset about that, as long as the Sens continue to have fun on the ice and learn as a team, even if they are learning how to handle a defeat.
Keep rolling boys, you are doing Sens Nation proud. Go Sens Go!!!
Why would Z-bad be out of their reach?
- he's not the guy Murray wanted in this draft
- he got sent back to sweden
- we now have Spezza, Turris, and Smith all producing
- Zbad's value to another team is higher than it is to Ottawa
I would trade Zibby in a second. It's not that I don't like him, he's just redudant. We can't even move him to wing with all the wingers we have on the team/in the system.
Highly doubt it will ever happen, but Perry is a guy that Murray traded two 2nd round picks to slide into a late 1st round slot to grab Perry when he was there..(Similar to the way he went after puemple/Noesan)
That being said I could only begin to imagine the cost to acquire the reigning MVP of the NHL lol
I've actually been hearing the same thing, reading about it online too. Hard to believe that Anaheim would even consider it, but remember they would want some major return for it and I would expect it would cost even more based on a playoff performance if we made it and how far we advanced, just like our return with Fisher when we moved him. Perry could be that RW we've been looking for to replace our beloved Captain, but I really think the price is too high.
I cannot see Perry to Ottawa unless we gave up MM9 or Spezza, Ducks GM made it clear they are not trading away for picks/prospects but rather roster players that can fill in immediately....
If there was a possibility of trading MM9 and our 1st rd pick this year for Perry, I would do it in a heartbeat... Perry was one of the biggest reasons the Ducks beat us in 07
Talked about this a little bit a couple days ago but right now I don't think the Sens are in on any of the big names floating around the trade market.
Sens are a budget team right now and any deal would have to see equal or close to equal money going the other way. Just the sense I get right now.
PraiseAlfie84, Michalek in a package for Perry?? I'd do that. Michalek was taken 6th overall in the 2003 draft where Perry went 28th.
It's fun to talk about though, but I really don't see Anaheim trading Perry or Getzlaf for that matter. I doubt Ryan is going anywhere either. Those are three great players who are in their prime and will continue to be for a number of years.
Only 1,467 to go to catch Ray Bourque for number 1.
I say sign him to 20 years ($100 million - $5M/year). And let the good times roll.
When BM did those sorts of things in the past media dicks and fans alike wanted to lynch the guy ,stay the course for now and see what Febuary brings my thinking is that teams out of the playoffs at that point won't be so greedy
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=610733
Yeah I agree with you, it is fun to talk about it, the fact that its not entirely hogwash or impossible makes it even more fun.
Would you think Foligno, Zibby and our 1st round pick(18th-25th) would get the deal done?
Or do you think MM9 has to be in it instead of Nicky.
Anaheim wont be able to keep both Getz and Perry in 2 years, Im sure they are looking at options.
I think you're on the right path with regards to what Ottawa would have to part with in order to acquire Perry. Personally, I;m not sure Ottawa will bite, but I think Anaheim will be asking for something similar to what you proposed.
haha it is pretty much entirely hogwash but I'll participate anyway.
Bob Murray said that if he were to deal one of Getzlaf, Perry or Ryan he said a core player would have to be going back his way, so you'd have to assume that Michalek would be part of the deal.
From a Sens perspective I'd do Michalek, Lee or Butler, and a first rounder for Perry. From an Anaheim perspective it would probably take an enormous over payment to pry the reigning NHL MVP away so they would probably want something along the lines of Michalek, Zibanejad, and a first rounder, in which case there won't be a deal to be had between Anaheim and Ottawa.
Getzlaf to the Leafs is all the talk in Leafs town. Blue team lovers are drooling over the thought of it.
Yeah its hard to say what Anaheim would take for Perry but if we could somehow keep Michalek and replace with another pick or prospect like Puempel, Noesen or Stone.
Foligno, Zibby, Stone/Puempel/N oesen, 1st round pick. If i'm Anaheim, thats hard to say no too, even if Perry is reigning MVP.
The we could have:
Perry Spezza Michalek
Greening Turris Alfie
Condra Smith Neil
Daug Konopka Butler
Winchester Regin
I think if any player is coming to Ottawa it's gonna be a tweak like a backup or another d-man BTW anyone notice Rob Klinkhammer in Bingo PPG since the trade ,don't think he has an NHL contract though ,We're in pretty good shape for the future right now hate to see us stray off course this early in the game ,keep the faith and GOSENSGO
Tough call to make, I would probably pull the trigger if thats what they were asking, Perry is a major upgrade over Michalek, Zibby, although promising doesnt really have a spot anymore since we got Turris as 2C, and Zibby on the wings isnt much of an upgrade to what we already have.
CRAZY
I would much rather go with this trade but something tells me it would take more. Murray probably wont do anything too drastic which is fine by me anyways.
We have the assets for Perry. We can get him without giving up Zibby.
We have to keep this kid. I like our team the way it is and Anderson seems to find his game. Future looks good.
Honestly, I'd prosose...
To Anaheim:
MM9
2012 1st rounder,
Stone,
Lee
To Ottawa:
Perry,
Etem,
2012 5th round pick
Karlsson would be a minus player if it was Lee watching his back. Karlsson his amazing and one of the best young NHL players but he still needs someone reliable and good against breakaways behind him. That guy, right now is Kuba and it’s not going to change in the near future. You should focus on trying to guess the length and cost of his next contract with the Sens.
Kuba loves the sens organization. He is playing very well for us and not just this year. I hope Murray will reward him for that.
On the other hand, Phillips, Gonchar, Carkner and Lee could all be easily replaced
The ducks wouldn't bite at that...
this team right now has a magical chemsitry to it. literally every piece is working wherever its being fit. the contributions are coming from literally everywhere. i mean this fact is literally glaring and obvious. you have karlsson sitting only two points behind spezza. what does that say? we have smith,mm,alfie, foligno, spezza all above 10 goals. turris is panning out just nicely with 8 points in 10 GP. honestly, the only two people this team needs to trade is chris phillips and alex auld. get a stronger backup to use as an asset once lehner comes up and get what you can while you can for phillips. not to mention the pieces that are coming up are just outstanding to name a few: silfverberg, zibanejad, stone? all the sens need to do is cleanup their defensive game and the wins will come. they will only be so much more deadly with this roster if they just fix their defensive game. come on guys, stop this trade talk, these guys win together and there is no point in breaking up a wonderful group of guys who love to win together. just ask chicago, they wish they could have all of byfuglien, niemi, ladd and versteeg back. they did the same as you guys are proposing: went and got hired help, not drafted help and it screwed them right after their cup win.
Only way any of these guys move is if someone gives them an offer they can't refuse. Burke has the moxie to do it, not sure about too many other gms. would love to see the leafs depleat thier talent pool yet again.
What about a player swap between Columbus and Anaheim? Now that has some potential in my opinion.
ummm- you've heard of the cap right?
right on brotha
I think all Sens fans agree with you, the trade talk is all just what ifs and nobody thinks they will happen.
