Sens, Jackets Talking Deal

After the start the Columbus Blue Jackets have had this year, it should come as no surprise that they are considering making moves.

Meanwhile, Sens GM Bryan Murray has indicated that he would like to add another NHL quality forward to his roster at some point. Was informed by a contact last night that the Sens and Jackets are discussing a deal for Derick Brassard.

The Ottawa Senators have shown an interest in Brassard in the past. Born in Hull, Quebec, Brassard is just 24 years old but like most of the Columbus team, has struggled in the early going this season. He has just two goals and two assists through 15 games.

Last night Brassard was a healthy scratch leading many to believe he may have played his last game with that organization. Brassard comes with a cap hit of $3,200,000 over the next three seasons.

Based on speculation from around the internet, the Senators are not the only team showing an interest but they are definitely in the mix. The contact speculated that Patrick Wiercioch could be a player the Sens include in discussions with the Blue Jackets.

It did not sound like anything was imminent as of last night but the two teams are definitely talking. Will update the blog if any additional information becomes available.

I would love for the sens to land brassard. As much as i like DaCosta, he could benifit from another year in Bingo. Brassard would be a solid addiction for the second line center.

I haven't seen Brassard play this year. Has he lost his 'touch', or are are his crud stats a result of CBJ's crud stats?

A deal around Wiercioch would be sweet. We have enough D coming up the pipe.

I hope we don't trade any 2012 second round picks away.

Seeing how everyone else in columbus seems to be struggling, i would imagine a change in scenery would greatly benifit him. He is a solid player IMO. would speed up this rebuild filling the second line center position. But if we were to acquire him, qhat would happen with Dacosta? and zebanejad next year? Smith has earned the 3rd line center position.

Wiercioch and a 2nd would be a steal for Brassard. Never hurts to be deep down the middle, but damn we need some top line wingers too. Brassard would make a solid 2nd line C, then what happens to all our other 2nd line C's in waiting?

If this deal happens I could see the team turning some of our centres into wingers...Ziban ejab comes to mind and imo he would be a great winger with very good speed, good hands and a nose for the net.

Brassard doesnt have many points mostly because he started the season on the 4th line... they switched him to LW or RW at the start of the year... so he was mostly getting used to it... Have him in my hockey pool so Ive been checking him out mostly all year... Would love to have him in Ottawa!

Brian Lee probably on his way out of town. I just hope we don't overpay for him. I think he would be a great addition but many of the players most of us would consider trading will probably have more value closer to the trade deadline.

I think this is a deal Murray only makes if he can make a steal. There is probably an opportunity there with how bad a spot the Bluejackets are currently in, but I don't see Murray pulling the trigger unless he gets his price. Brassard is a good hockey player but he's far from having proven that he's a special player who is fully recovered from his previous injury issues.

For heavens sake do not trade someone who can be a all - time bingoer (Wiercoch) trade a Phillips or a Foligno or a Lee (we are tempted to [and do] put him on the Ottawa sens and we just better get rid of him than keep that temptation there) or a Winchester. Get rid of garbage that have one way contracts.

You cannot overpay some one with a team that has a cap hit of 51.864m and are heading to about 45m next year (with out including that we will be paying Karlsson about 5m next year) and is rebuilding with draft picks not signing big players.

Derick Brassard was drafted 6th by Blue Jackets in First Round, and has been with that team for 4 years.

His best season was last year 17 goals and 30 assists for 47 points in 74 games.

Might be the 2c Sens are desperately looking for.

IMO, foligno aint going nowhere. He is one of the hardest workers on this team night in and night out. If anyone on the curent sens roster gets traded, IMO, it will be Lee. He doesnt get near the playing time he needs to develop. Lee and Brassard are two players that can greatly benifit from a change in scenery. Columbus could use a shut down defencemen with fair bit of upside.

If there is a move involving a dman I would much rather it was one of the dmen already playing with the sens, but who is going to trade for Gonchar or Kuba ta this point and I'd like to hang on to Lee.

Brassard has 2 more years after this, so it's not like we are tying ourselves down long term if we do acquire him and he's not what we want in the future.

Considering this came from Chirp and not Eklund I'm inclined to believe there is something to this,if Weircioch is the player they want then I would say "in a heartbeat" but I think they would want a little more immediate help in the form
of a Butler or Da Costa that may take a little more thought,
Travis Yost was reporting that Butler is falling out of favor,
with MacStash but I thought he was playing better the last 2 games not great but better ,when he came last season he had Spezza as his center and not as much pressure to perform
This year half the team are in the same boat ,I kinda hope the Jackets are looking at a couple d-men for Brassard and try to get forwards from a later trade,I would hate to part with any forwards at this time ,,been wondering what the story with Carkner is it seems to be taking a while for him

I would love for this trade to happen. We need that second line center. Maybe Brassard can play with Filatov to see what can happen . I think both of them have extreme talent but haven't got the time to show it.
Maybe they should trade lee instead for him to get the chance to play on the other team instead of sitting in the box.

BTW, I doubt Lee is going anywhere. If he was trade bait, they would be showcasing him with more games.
To me, P. Kuba is the most likely trade. He's playing well again and has a high salary.

Gonchar is not going anywhere or Phillips.

Was it not the blue jackets looking for Foligno a year or so ago.

Foligno Kuba for Brassard and a pick.

Agreed... was at the game-- they have a long way to go. That 4th goal against on Lehner was a bad one...

The B-Sens lost a lot of players this offseason -- in particular 4 of their experienced D... that's hard to replace.

Having Locke & Grant out and Daug in Ottawa.. that's not helping either.

Chirp, there was rumours that Murray was also interested in bringing back Vermette. Have you also heard that?

Kuba 3.7 cap, doubt he is part of the talks.

This year we struggle with extra players but at the end of the season, the deck is cleared.

Our draft picks are looking good - Pageau 30 points in 16 GAMES 12 points back of leading scorer who has played 9 more games. He's almost in the top 10 in scoring. He's a speedy dynamo. Stone on an "unreal" pace now leading scorer again in the west. Noesen, Prince and Puempel have turned it up 2. More than a point a game, looking good.

I can't see trading for Brassard is the right hting to do UNLESS Columbus would take back Gonchar or Kuba...Trading a couple of our prospects for an underachiever is not a great move for a rebuilding team...And before you start saying how great he was in Junior, just think of Nikita Filatov...Brass ard has done nothing in the NHL - there is a reason Columbus is willing to let him go...

For what its worth, I hope Murray forgets this trade, or any others like it, and focus hard on signing Parise as a UFA next year...We have the cap room, and he is young enough to figure importantly for our rebuid to the top!

Think how great it would be to see Spezza feeding him pucks on the wing next year, and Michalek strengthing our second line...

He had 9 goals in 2009 ...17 goals in 2010 .... Now they have Carter Johanson and Vermette ..No room for Brassard ...thats why

Columbus isin't dealing from a position of strength here. They are last in the league and Brassard has been getting fourth line minutes. I can see Lee and Foligno being offered, for Bassard and a third.

And we should take that and run.

What I like about Brassard is that he can play Center and Wing. Is he a fast skater? Not sure but if the price is right I'd bring him in. Weircoch is the piece I'd look at moving for him but I wouldn't get into a bidding war for him. As well I wouldn't move Folingo. He is starting to round into form, why walk from him know.

Checked out Butler in which he played top six, and had to go back to pre-season.

Sep27 .....Butler demoted to Line 3

He then got injured, and has not found his mojo
and not had top six minutes in regular season !

Who knows what will evolve with Butler in his career ??

Butler replaced Alfredsson on the second line for five games. He had a good chance to prove himself as a top six guy but didn't.

He had top six minutes with PP time against the rangers but failed to show anything.

It's save to say that BB continues to struggle.

Getting back to the trade rumours with Columbus - I know that Lee is the obvious candidate from Ottawa, and I suggested that Butler could be in the mix as well...does anyone think that there may be other players being discussed to make this deal happen? I'm thinking it may have to be more than one player from the Sens (including B'Sens) to make anything happen...

It appears that all of you would rather discuss stuffing the ballot box with names that shouldn't be there (Gonchar, Anderson,...) then talk about what the Sens may do on the trade market...
That's ok, but while I admire your loyalty to the home team, I see it as further proof that voting for the all-star game should not be done by the fans...

We have 4 wingers in the system who are currently scoring at over a point a game pace in junior, plus Silfverberg over in Sweden, Filatov and Petersson in Bingo. If we really nailed down our depth at centre, things start looking promising.

I still think we look to improve on the wing through free agency next year, though. Particularly if Alfredsson chooses not to come back.

the potential for brassard to be traded is there. talk has begun accoring to his agent, but not with the Sens. looks like Chicago is a strong possibility.
