It will be nice for the Senators to have an actual home game tonight. After match ups with the Leafs and Habs, I have had just about enough of watching other teams fans invade SBP. As Sens fans it is something we are used to but last night was on another level. There were times when it felt like a 70/30 split in favour of Habs fans in that building.
Not pleasant.
Ottawa actually played a pretty solid game against the Habs but just couldn't find a way to beat Carey Price in the third period. That and Montreal did a good job capitalizing on a couple turnovers by Kuba and Karlsson.
Ottawa will look to bounce back with the Sabres in town tonight. Buffalo also played last night and snapped a two game winning streak with a win over the Calgary Flames. Jhonas Enroth started last night so Ryan Miller is expected to get the nod against the Sens.
Here is how the Sens line up will look...
Greening-Spezza-Michalek
Foligno-Da Costa-Butler
Daugavins-Smith-Neil
Filatov-Winchester-Condra
Phillips-Lee
Kuba-Karlsson
Cowen-Gonchar
Tonight is Canadian Forces Appreciation Night and the Sens are asking fans to wear red. The game can be seen on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada or heard on the radio at the Team1200.
Assuming that Anderson starts in goal ,with Auld as the backup !
We have to find ways to put some pucks past Miller who
should be in as the starting goalie.
GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!
Also wondering if Spezza is playing hurt....no shots on net last night and seemed slow although he was strong in face-offs...
I don't want to see more of Filatov. I've pretty much given up on him. He doesn't seem to get any better or do anything useful when he has the puck. I'd like to have to change my opinion on him, but it isn't happening right now.
I agree with you Chirp about the crowd last night. Brutal. I think I'm going to trade in the rest of my Habs and Leafs tickets for other 'gold' level games. I know it won't help the crowd situation, but it will make my life less stressful.
Hearing the hometown heroes getting booed sucks. But on top of that, something about getting together a large group of Ottawa area Habs or Leafs fans seems to bring out the more disgusting side of humanity.
I think it annoys fans to go to those games so it makes it worse, our fans stay home and theirs come out. I also think tickets are harder to come by for those games so fans wait for games against other teams.
Once we get into shape to contend for the cup I hope it ends, less open tickets floating around.
Not sure how old you are but Filatov is just a kid, under a ton of pressure. cut him some slack.
I hope he makes you change your opinion soon:)
Shouldn't he be getting better as he plays games, even by a little bit, if he's going to turn into a decent player?
DaCosta seems to be growing as a player, getting a little dirtier around the boards, trying some sneaky passes, working on his 'snipe'. Filatov, not so much.
I'm no scout, maybe he is and I'm just not seeing it. To me Filatov always just looks kind of bland out there.
Until he gets some legit minutes with legit linemates, you can't write him off. Granted he has to earn it, but he needs a chance.
Once Ottawa starts winning consistently hopefully Ottawa fans will start buying tickets again before these other team's fans. But I bet Melnyk is somewhat thankful that somebody is buying tickets & he isn't losing as much money. There are obviously a good core of sens fans that will continue to go to Sens games me included but there are some that will only go when they are doing well unfortunately.
Right now having him play 5 minutes a night on the fourth line is accurately described as a waste. He should be playing first line minutes in Bingo or top 6 minutes in Ottawa. If he's going to develop his talent that's what needs to happen. Just remember Ottawa is also trying to develop players like Da Costa, Butler, Condra, Greening, and others. Foligno to me is the guy who gets a lot of ice but has never done much with it. He has a good game once and a while but he's consistently failed to take his game to the next level despite being given every opportunity to figure it out at the NHL level.
Foligno creates more plays then just about any other forward on this team and is a constant thorn in the other team's side. His point production may not be where we like it, but his game as a whole is still really good. He gets the ice time he does because he's earned it by consistently showing up every night and doing the little things the coach asks. Can't blame the guy for not being a sniper if he's doing just about everything else right.
While I love not having a night off of watching hockey, players can't compete at as high of a level as they normally would with a day off.
Would love to see some sort of scheduling that made the b2b work where the opposition was also coming off of a b2b as well.
Okay sorry, every Sens fan except you has been waiting for Foligno to step up and break out for the past 2-3 seasons. About the only thing he does consistently is play inconsistently. He has shown little progress towards becoming a player who can bring it every night and score consistently.
Greening, for example, has already shown more in his short NHL career than Foligno has shown in his entire time as a Senator. If you seriously think Foligno creates more out there than almost every other Senator your either blind, stupid, or both.
Wow Sensnation, you sure are one patient dude. There is a reason why Columbus let him go for a third and is now playing fourth line and was sent down to Bingo. I think he is KHL bound for next year if even with 5 minutes of TOI, he isn't creating scoring chances vs the other teams 4th line. Greening is now on the first by being the best player on the ice when he was playing on the third line vs other teams third lines so don't use that excuse.
But I do hope he proves me wrong so I can eat some crow.
Note to McLean... don't play Phillips and Gonchar as a pairing... does not work. Phillips-Lee and Gonchar-Cowen.
Nice to hear that Cowen, Rundblad & DaCosta have made the team.
Now the issue is what to do when Carkner comes back? Don't think they are keeping 8 D on rotation? If Cowen and Rundblad are staying... then someone is leaving. Question is who?
I don't know what to cheer for anymore, my head says losses but when I am watching games I can't help but get excited when something goes right or hell at the tv when they mess up.
Foligno drives me nuts, if he had ANY finish....what so ever he would be great, he holds onto the puck well until he appears to be in a good position then he either appears to pass it to noone or just losses the puck. Don't think I have ever seen a quality shot that didn't come in the blue paint in a scrum.
You know what's great Tyrant, I don't need you to agree with me, cause the coach obviously does. Enjoy your perspective, he's one of the most consistent players we have, people just expected too much of him. He's a role player and playmaker, not a scorer. I can live with that, you should learn to as well seeing as the coach can.
Yes, I believe there are very few prospects that are instant hits in the NHL. Most players historically take 3-5 years just to start showing where their ceiling may be. Foligno's offensive ceiling looks lower then we all hoped and expected for, but he still has some room to grow and he's a player I think any winning team needs on their 2nd or 3rd line. Greening balances our 1st line, Foligno our 2nd right now, likely 3rd in the future. With all these small skill guys, someone has to do the dirty work, and he not only does it, but enjoys it. I love that in a player!
I think Filatov will just be a late bloomer, but will still be a significant scorer in his prime years (25-30). An example is Tomas Fleischmann who is just now at 27 rounding into what people expected of him. Obviously not as high of a pick in the draft though.
When Bruins beat Sens on Tuesday, Foligno was in on all our 3 goals. He scored a goal and had 2 assists.
His quick drop pass to DaCosta was a classic goal for Da Costa.
You are somewhat of an economist with your analysis !
Selling season ticket packages to local Sens fans, would reduce the Leafs and Habs fans, to a point where we Sens fans, would surely drown out the "Go Leafs Go " and the "Go Habs Go ', as well as the "Ole, Ole, Ole " chant that would not be heard also !
Ottawa is far from unique in this aspect. Annoying yes, but not unique
You cant compare Greening and Filatov...I do not think Greening is on the top line cause of his skill..he's there cause of his size...I definitely think Filatov has more natural skill than greening...mayb e even butler..Butler has been on the team longer and showed alot of promise last year and thats why he is ahead on the list of newbies deserving a chance...Filato v will get his..we aren't even a quarter way into the season...Please stop giving up on players so fast...the rebuild is all about patience something a lot of peeps on here don't seem to have..you'll should give fishing a shot next summer..might help in that department..;)
Please submit this proposal to the team.
Interesting idea, but then who would buy packages for Minnesota and Columbus games? I think they throw in a "gold" game in with a bunch of "bronze" games for a reason.
GO SENS GO
Not sure what the injury is but he was crunched in the boards...
But he's back now.
in Sweden
Foligno the usual - one hand on the stick trying to skate around the defender, gets pushed off with ease
Filtov - when he is on the ice, he does nothing
I thought Spezza, while for the most part was trying to do to much, had some moments where he played like the guy who was going at nearly a two point a game pace during our winning streak.
Won't argue with the Foligno comment but on Filatov I thought, especially during the 1st period, he was playing some of the best hockey he has this season. He was fighting along the boards, he was playing physical and I think him and that 4th line had one or two good chances which is more than you normally ask of a fouth line. Hopefully he can build off tonight.
In the future, I hope if EK is in the shootout he's not the 3rd shooter. Would have really like to see them give Filatov or DaCosta a chance once it got extended.
Point keeps us at .500 though and currently in the playoffs, but with more games played. Where's that Nov 1st playoff standing stat when it works in our favor!
A .500 Points Percentage Ranks the team:
2008-2009 - 24th Overall
2009-2010 - 24th Overall
2010-2011 - 23rd Overall
Right Now - 20th Overall
The truth? The truth is a .500 record man, nothing I said was wrong. Did I say this .500 record would get them in the playoffs, NO! You literally called me out for something I did not say, and somehow feel better about yourself haha. You're a joke man, keep riding your high horse all alone on an island.
His first two games he played this season he had a point, was +1, 3 hits and a SOG. Thats not be for 12 min of ice time/game he got.
He was then sent down to the AHL while Zib got his 9 games in.
Now he is back and slowly getting more and more ice time.
Oct 30 5:16
Nov 1 6:34
Nov 4 7:18
Nov 5 8:51
He is averaging a SOG and a hit or two during the last 4 games. I'm sure his playing time will go up steadily so long as he plays a decent defensive game. So far he hasn't been on the ice for a goal against this season.
The points and flashy plays will come when he starts playing on better lines and with more confidence.
This no pressure learning experience is fantastic for him now.
well said !!! Filatov will have his time don't worry
Other than the 2 blowouts to Colorado and Philly -- for the most part this young team has been pretty competitive in the other 13 games. I will take that.
But I agree re: Spezza -- he is trying to do too much ever since Alfie has been out. He needs to get back to just playing his game.
Can't seem to find the statistics.. but heard it on Team 1220 on Friday... Spezza does have his giveaways.. but he is not the worst... he also is approx a +10 in takeaways.. which is something that was lacking in his game a few years ago... He needs to stop the 'fancy' moves... actually quite a few players have to stop that. They were good until they got on that 6 game roll.... seems they forgot what got them those wins. Simple plays... hard work. They have a lot of games on the road in Nov.... maybe they can get back to that.
Hate too tell you I told you so after the Boston game about Spezza ..but I told you lol
I am 99% likely done with it this week.
one point is better than no points.
Longer the season goes the more we develop, I expect the later part of the season to be very exciting, lots of practice on the shoot out last night.
few days to practice some things for our next game.
Why was that trade vetoed?
I hope you don't give up on the pool. I like your trading attitude.
There is a thread in the pool discussing the issue. Taking a lot of heat for the veto so I'm looking for a way to resolve the issue in a way that works for everyone.
Haha just relax! We'll get it sorted out. I would hate to have to refund your buy in for the pool.
Oh well... it was good while it lasted.
Spoke with someone who thinks Armstrong/Hitch cock will trade anyone who doesn't buy in: "You're going to see guys moved out of there."
