Lehner Starts vs. Leafs

Riding a five game winning streak, the Ottawa Senators are going to make a switch in between the pipes.

After being called up yesterday to replace the injured Alex Auld, the Sens have announced that Robin Lehner will be making the start in goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Craig Anderson has been in goal for each of the five victories on this latest run but will have a day off in the back to back situation. Great chance for Robin Lehner to make a mark at the NHL level.

The Leafs come in as one of the hottest teams in the NHL, including an impressive win over the Penguins last night.

Another young guy will get a shot but it will not be Filatov as originally thought.  Instead, Bobby Butler will draw in.  Alfredsson left the game against the Rangers after taking a Wolski elbow to the head and will not be available.  There was no update on his injury which is being called day to day for now.

Filatov is a healthy scratch.  I would assume the club had some concern about Konopka not being available and wanted to make sure they had a replacement ready.

Tonight will be a really good game.. Both the Sens and Leafs are hot right now and hopefully there is some animosity between the teams. A good tough game is what I am expecting and hopefully Lehner plays awesome.

So Filatov will not be in the line up afterall. Butler will take the spot in the line up while Filatov will watch from the pressbox.

That's a difficult spot for Lehner. If they win, the streak continues, but if they lose it came to an end on his watch, which could be tough on his confidence. The simple solution is to win the game then.

The Leafs have been playing really well. I just hope Lehner can stop them. I love this kid... but is this the game to put him in? Sens D is still making mistakes -- he could be thrown into the fire... so to speak.

I have a question... if it was brought up before I did not see it -- BUT if Anisimov was hurt from the Konopka hit.. as he laid on the ice 'appearing' stunned... then why was he not given the league mandated 15 min assessment in a quiet room? Did he even miss a shift since he was out on the 5 min PP? Does anyone else think he purposely 'sold' that hit?

And for Tortorella to say Alfie skated into Wolski -- really? Did he see the replay?

Interested to see what Shanahan does.

Like I said Friday about Lehner getting the start tonight, I think this is a great move on the part of Murray/MacLean.

We have nothing to lose by giving Lehner some NHL experience and this should give Auld a clear message that he'll need to step up his game when given the next chance.

Sens also have upcoming back to back games next weekend as well, so should prove interesting especially if Lehner plays really well and the Sens can pull out the victory.

For a team that was suppose to struggle offensively, the Sens sure have proven most of us wrong (over 3 goals a game average) and have shown that this team is not a bunch of quitters and will fight until the final buzzer.

It's also nice to see the defense getting things together finally. With Lee and Carkner still in the wings should make for an interesting year for the SENS.

GO SENS GO! Win one for ALFIE tonight! And let's hope this crazy ride doesn't end for a while!!

I'm glad to see Bobby bottle service draw in tonight. It's simply his turn. I have greater expectations for Filatov long term but it's Butler's turn to show what he can do.

Sandy Torts was right about one thing, Alfie did skate into Wolski, but what he failed to mention was that Wolski threw out his shoulder/elbow into Alfie's head while Alfie skated into him. Wolski knew what he was doing and he will get a suspension. This is Shanahan we're talking about, he doesn't mess around.

Hoping for a huge game for Lehner and the continued dominance of Michalek-Spezza -Greening tonight. Without Alfie this is a one line team we have and they need to be great tonight if they're going to beat a more balanced attack team in blue and white tonight.

Also I wanna give some props to Gonchar and Kuba. I've been one of the harshest critics since the beginning of last season but they're playing pretty good hockey under Maclean, especially Gonchar. Kuba is still painfully soft in every thing he does but he has improved and may make himself a tradeable asset by the deadline.

With the way Gonchar, Rundblad, and the best offensive dman in the league Karlsson have been playing, we've been able to generate a lot of offense through the back end. They're really doing a great job of getting the puck up to the forwards. It's a joy to watch.

The Sens D is still making mistakes... I expect the Leafs to go hard on Sens D and make them pay for their mistakes. It will be a test for Lehner... but I'm worried about the outcome.

The Leafs forwards better not get too close to him though... they will pay.

Let's see how many PP's the refs hand to the Leafs tonight -- it will definitely be one-sided.

I can't see Shanny NOT giving out any extra discipline for a cowardly act. I'd like to see his video after to justify not even a 2 game suspension. If one comes out.
As for Lehner, good call by Pauly Mac. Got to keep this kid hungry for NHL experience and it's nice to see Bobby Butt back in the line up. No reason to insert Filatov before Bobby Butt. Tonight's score ... Ottawa 5-3.

I agree that Konopka and Neiler will have serious damage to do next game vs the rangers... the 9th i believe... but Callahan takes elbows to the temple for breakfast, he's not the target.

The target is Wolski and Gaborik.

As a Polish Canadian I have always loved wolski till yesterday. I want to see him suspended 5 games and see his head on a spear infront of parliament. You don't do that to someones captain... Thats on the same level as the Crosby hit during the winter classic.... Thankfully Alfie is tough as nails, apparently top 3 pain thresholds in the NHL.

Sandy the hit from Kanopka was sold sold sold, I had it PVR and watched it over a few times, they put it over on the refs big time, Konopka was more pushing him off the puck from the side, acting acting acting, the ice on the neck was a poor me sell the refs.
Very pathetic, once he figured he sold it enough he jumped back on the ice.

Anyways glad to see Lehner get the start, rest Anderson for the next game.
Lehner has something to prove and I expect him to be lights out tonight.

I say BM calls up Lessard Nov. 9th

and yes Boo the shit out of Fagski too

You really can't get more blatant and deliberate than that. Add the fact that they were jawing at eachother 25 secs prior, shows Alfie got under his skin and Fagski decided to blindside him for it. That itself should be considered (if the jackasses even bother to notice) for anyone who still has the game. In the 3rd period check it out: With 8:23 left, watch Fagski and Alfie off the faceoff

It's a no brainer that he should sit at least for 5 games, like I said yesterday, if Wisniewski got 8 for his hit.

That idiocy warrants more if you ask me

Can't wait to see Lehner again. Hope he plays well win or loose. I doubt this is the team giving him a shot though....Ander son is playing well but also a lot, and on back to back games it should be the back up playing, a since Auld is injured Lehner gets the nets. Unless he blows away the management/coac hing he'll be sent down as soon as Auld is capable of dressing
I also can't wait to see Bobby out there tonight. Hope he snipes a couple. Also hope he just takes Alfie's spot andplays with DaCosta and Foligno
I also want Filatov to get some games soon instead of Daugavins. Not that he hasn't been playing well, but I just see more of a future/potentia l with Filatov. So he needs more experience playing with good players and against them as well
My favorite is DaCosta though...he has been an awesome player for us this year. As a rookie his play is just amazing. So much poise and skill out there. I hope he locks down that 2C spot by the end of the year

Ottawa's line up :

forwards:

Michalek - Spezza - Greening

Foligno - Da Costa - Butler

Daugavins - Smith - Neil

Condra - Konopka - Winchester

defense:

Cowen - Gonchar

Phillips - Rundblad

Kuba - Karlsson

Lehner with the start (as senschirp said) with Anderson backup Filatov will not be playing according to my source but was still called up. If Ottawa can score on the leafs early they might call in the backup who is some rookie who has been playing in the ECHL last year and be able to score on him easily.

I'm disgusted beyond words by the fact there will be no further disciplinary action for Wolski's hit on Alfredsson. I would love to see Shanahan issue a video explaining how/why this was not considered a suspendable offense; especially after every hockey analyst agreed it surely would be. This event will be forgotten soon as there is much hockey left to be played this season. However, it is an extremely bizarre and questionable decision considering the league's apparent dedication to improve the safety of its human capital; which should include Ottawa players...

Hope the boys win it for Alfie tonight. GO SENS GO!

Expect Phaneuf to run both Spezza & Michalek tonight to try to get them out of the game... Leafs are always favoured by the refs. How can such a truculent team gets so little penalties is beyond me.

Sens have 3 more games this week... another 2 back to back... so Anderson needed the rest.

sick pass from Rundblad!!!!! They should have a way of suspending some refs if they make a bunch of really bad calls if they had that the leafs would be 4-6-1 or something like that. The second call on Karlsson was fine but the first call on Greening was absolutely bogus!! If anything it was boarding and they call it an illegal check to the head!! If that call was a regular in the NHL I promise you this sport would not be called phisycal. Good point...It's ridiculous that Kypreos would totally discredit Rundblad's vision and Greening's smarts in getting behind them. Not even really a defensive brain fart, rather an incredible play!

I've been looking forward to watching this game all day. I forgot to factor in that Joe Bowen would be on the play by play call. What a homer. He makes me want to crawl through my t.v. screen and choke him (I recognize that this is not possible). If he's not gargling the Leaf players' balls, he's referring to Spezza as Winchester. Geez!

The only thing positive about Kuba is that at least he'll play decently on a contract year in which I'm sure he will not return. Gonchar slowly getting the heat off him but he needs to continue his good place and not become lazy.

Kuba is still a liability defensively, he gets caught flat footed on the opposing blue line way too often and has trouble clearing our own zone...But as long as he keeps putting up points he's useful and should be able to fetch something at the TD....

Kypreos is the worst of them all -- well maybe second to Glenn Healey. They are so pro Leafs they don't give any other team any credit.
They are HOCKEY reporters/comme ntars -- not just Leaf commenters. Leave your bias at the door. It's just sickening.

I wouldn't be so sure, I would have agreed with you before Philips got another contract(althou gh he has started to play somewhat better as of late).

I still wish we had just decided to go with Lehner this season over Anderson(strict ly because we are young enough and likely to be even younger next year so may as well get a year under the belt)

Joe Bowen is the best example of incompetence I have ever heard. He referred to Spezza as Winchester, he gave play by plays described as Gonchar hooks his man (instead of checks his man) etc., but his piece of resistance was listing the 3 stars including Robin Regher. He sucks ass more than anyone I've ever heard call a game, which says a lot, because I've heard Bob Cole who is senile.

The Toronto broadcasting media are downright BRUTAL.

On another note, Smith and Condra over this winning stretch have been the team's X-Factors by far. Those two guys do play well together, on the PK OR five on five.

I agree here, MacLean is doing a Jack Adams type job here, I mean look at our roster, its a joke and yet he has them competing night in and night out and winning games in all different scenarios...

I am starting to feel the heat a bit on my prediction for this team but I wont back away from it, yet...I still think we wont make the playoffs and hopefully we dont finish 9th or 10th, that would be such a waste.

Anyways Lehner has to be a honourable mention for highlight of the night, that save probably won us that game! wow!
