A Well Deserved Shootout Victory

It was more dramatic than expected this was a much deserved win for the Ottawa Senators.

Jason Spezza scored the lone goal in the shootout and Craig Anderson stood tall as the Senators survived a rally by the Hurricanes and won their third straight hockey game.

The storyline shifted after a couple third period goals by Carolina but this was a game Ottawa deserved to win. They worked their tails off and were rewarded for it.

How can you not love the work ethic the Ottawa Senators showed in this one?  Took them awhile to find their legs in the first period but that second period was some of the best they have played all season.  They were relentless on the forecheck and supporting each other all over the ice.

I have a feeling that middle frame will be the period Paul MacLean uses in the video room when trying to show exactly how he wants this team to play.

Normally when a team lets a 2-0 lead slip in the third it's because they sat back. Really don't feel like that was the case in this one. The first goal by Ruutu was a case of miscommunication and the Skinner goal was just an awful penalty call.

Good to see the Sens power play also click again tonight as they buried their only chance with the man advantage.  After a rough stretch to start the year, Gonchar has been the best defenseman over the past three games and was solid again tonight.  When him and Karlsson are on, this power play is tough to stop.

With Alfredsson out, Spezza stepped up scoring once in regulation along with the shootout winner.  The trio of Spezza, Michalek and Greening were a handful in this one and outworked the opposition on every shift.  Definitely some signs of chemistry from that trio.

The Sens are next in action on Thursday night when they host the Florida Panthers.

  • Really liked the game of Kaspars Daugavins in his first call up of the season. He looked confident in all three zones and seemed to have some chemistry on a line with Smith and Condra.  Interesting to note that he finished with of ice time compared to the eight minutes and change for both Da Costa and Winchester.  It's just one game but he's making a strong case to stick around.
  • Craig Anderson let in a couple goals in the third but was good when his team needed him. He stood tall in the first period when Ottawa was a little sluggish and completely shut the door in the shootout.
  • Zibanejad's ninth game is in the books and I liked what I saw.  Still needs to loosen up a bit with the puck but he is still contributing.  Took a shift in overtime and finished the game with 14:36 of ice time.  Decision rests in Murray's hands now.

posted this on the other post lol but here it is again.

Best players on the ice tonight

Spezza
Greening
Daugavins
Gonchar
Anderson

Leave it to tsn to say our record is now 3-5-0. I mean this has seriiously pissin me off. The constant erros on spelling our players names wrong, the constant errors of incorrect stats. Am i the only one who notices this.

Nice to see the boys stayin on track. Also glad i picked spezza on my fantasy team.

Hat tip to Zenon Konopka on his goal to open the scoring. Heck of a finish for his first in a Senators uniform.

I wish i would have picked up Spezza in my pool. 120 face off wins so far, goals, assits, 5 ppps, 1 gwg... guy is on a tear...

I also let anderson slip through my fingers on saturday when someone dumped him to free agency... Had a chance to acquire a starter for nothing and flopped on it. The 7goal losses were scary but he's warmed up and the team is falling into place.

I hate having sens on my fantay team though, because when they start to lose you get even more angry at them. Oh well... fantasy mistakes..

go sens go. Didnt watch the game but heard it on team1200, love those guys.

Spezza has stepped up... big time! He has taken the Sens on his back and is looking great! To think how much he's changed since he's come into the league is pretty crazy. Sure, he still gives the puck away but have you seen him skate his heart out to back check? He really deserves the 'A'.

Daugavins didn't look out of place on the ice. He almost reminds me of Smith without taking penalties. Daug was huge in the playoffs for Bingo and that has definitely boosted his confidence. He just does all the little things right.

Looking at the ice times for the past few games, I've realized that the reason MacLean is pretty much playing three lines is because he's rewarding the players on the fly. Remember when Neil was double shifted after a few momentum changing shifts against the Jets and Jackets?

Keep it up!

Chirp,

It's time you start moderating the forums a bit more. Having pessimistic "fans" is one thing and having them voice their opinions is the same thing. But, having these 'trolls' whom continously spam non-productive and non-contributiv e tripe here is only going to deter the other audience, and that is another thing.

Not in reference to this post and the comments thereafter, but in reference to the other ones prior to this.

Moderate please or I can assure you that you'll be stuck with some flaming contest real soon. Especially with the season we're going to have - the trolls love it.

Way more fun to watch this year:

Lower expectations.
Young, hungry players.
Confident goalie.
Up-tempo style of play.

Who needs wins? (well, this year anyway)

nice game. man spezza was flying out there. what dekes, what plays and what chances and WHAT A SHOOTOUT GOAL. there was this one play he made off the boards which was absolute skill. he is ON A TEAR.

note: the more Greening plays better, the less chances filatov has of being on spezza's wing. tough choices coming up.

da costa needs to step up the game in the offensive zone. he doesnt give his all in digging pucks out.

the others work, interesting.

Great Game, should not have been as long as it was but its a win and another two points.

We are lucky to have Gonchar, I am really turning into a fan the way he as been playing as of late.

Spezza is lights out, we are lucky to have him.

Greening is a beast.

The refs made them work harder than they should have

Spezza is the next captain

Zibby should stay with the team, he is not going to learn the nhl game in sweeden playing on big ice. Just shelter him a bit this year.

Filatov should be given another shot playong with Alfie and Dacosta

I think we owe Gonchar an apology

We are not going to be picking first in June.

Also we will win around 20 games, so enjoy those wins, we are still getting Yakupov! You should all be praying we get him, its like saying no to Crosby...

heres what I would do if Im ottawa

keep MZ. Send down Da Costa for awhile, waive/trade Winchester, keep Daugavins up for a bit longer. Call up Filatov

Greening - Spezza, Michalek
Alfie - MZ - Filatov
Foligno - Smith - Neil
Condra - Konopka - Daugavins

IR - Regin, Butler

On Defense:

Move Lee - he really deserves to play elsewhere...or move Kuba, even though he's been okay, id rather have Lee though
Keep Runblad up. Carkner would be my 7th D

This is my prediction to what happens. Daugavins might not stay and while DaCosta could...either way, one of the two should be up and so should Filatov.

Just finished watching the game on PVR. Woohoo!

It's still quite early in the season but the type of play we've seen in the past 3 games aligns with what I predicted back in July. I'm not expecting long win streaks but if they continue with this agressive style of play and Andy keeps his focus, the Sens will finish somewhere between 11th and 8th. (My guess: 10th)

(Apologies to those expecting a high draft spot...)

The fans that like to piss on the fans 'hoping for a high draft pick', are just as bad as those they piss on. They're just on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Still lots of time to finish last in league, still lots of time to finish 10th in the conference. Either side could be right...

What is pretty clear though is this team is young in key areas, and filled with role players in others. They will need to work hard every game, they will need most other teams to take them lightly, they will need good goaltending, and they will need to limit the stupid mistakes/penalt ies. They do that, they might have a chance to win some games.

They are a fragile house of cards right now, but I guess you can say they are holding together. I said before the game, to some friends, that this Carolina game would be a good test (after the way their last two opponents), and they won (barely). So might as well enjoy the ride while it lasts!

Uhhhh, they had a 2-0 lead until very, very, late in the 3rd, but had to hold-on for a shootout win? They were outshot. In the box more. Out hit (barely). Lost more faceoffs. Konopka scored? It was a typical road game, where they snuck into the other teams barn, and stole a game.

Now none of that really matters to me, because they won. But, you protested so I felt compelled to reply. I'm just curious (ya, i'll bite) what your problem with someone calling that win "ugly"? Go ahead explain, the floor is yours...

Game was in our hands, until 2 Sens players watched the puck
bounce from backboards, looked at by Anderson which was proper decision, but Ruutu slammed it in, and woke the Canes up for a comeback in last few minutes.

All the 2 Sens players had to do, was simply touch the puck
and it would have been icing the puck by the Canes .
The player closest to touch the puck was Gonchar, and I think the other one was Cowen .

Real happy that Spezza scored the winner in a shootout !!

Speeez will play 80 games his season. Put up 84 points. I got michalek pegged to miss 6-7 games as maintenance. I think I'm going to buy or ask my girlfriend for a the alternate spezza jersey for christmas. Never fear 80+ pt production is here.

It's more alfie I'm worried about. He looks good on the ice, but who knows how he's feeling off of it. You don't want to put your body through 2012-2013 just to finish out of the playoffs. If he's hurting now or feels the toll is getting to be too much, he may just retire at the end of the year....

Sickening dive by Skinner (twice in one play)

For a guy that is known for his strong skating and balance he sure went down easy. That 'trip' was a joke and the actual 'holding' was non existant. Rundblad didnt even hold him until Skinner was already on the ice.

Glad it didnt come back to burn us.

At the risk of being called a naysayer (at best), or an Idiot (thanks Tookie), I was the one one who was questioning those calling Spezza a top ten (Elite) center.
I'm not going to re-state my argument, nor list those who I'd rather have on my team. In my heart of hearts, I do believe he is a top ten guy, and have argued the point many times in the past - but I at least admit that there are quite a few other centers who are also pretty good...
Beyond the Crosby's and the Malkins et al, it's not an exact science compiling such a list and I guess I was just presenting some basis for argument. Here i was thinking that this is what we were here for...?

We havent beaten a top 8 team yet.
Goons and role players always score early in the season, then the talent level rises and the Stars have to produce. Spezza has to keep this up for 82 games, which is doubtful.

Simple, we are learning to win. Whether it is clinging to a lead to win in shootout, or a late third period scramble to win the game, we're finding a way to get it done as and such a young squad we are learning from every game. It may not always be pretty, but it's the W that matters at the end of the night.

It is what it is. I fall in the camp that believes that while we are more than likely not a playoff contender, that our team has the potential to be a lot better than people believe.

That being said, IMO the best scenario for us this year is to play tough, show improvement, grab a few well deserved wins, but end the season with a shot at a top 5 - hopefully #1 pick.

No matter which part of the "tanking" spectrum you fall on, what do you except the team and the fans to do? Jeer the team when they win? (this wouldn't surprise me TOO much) Trade away successful players or send bury prospects in the minors for now? Winning is never a bad thing and if we wind up with "just" the 10th pick and miss Yakupov? It is was it is.

What would you suggest Tookie? just sulk when we win?

I'm in the camp that believes we will finish with a lottery pick. Even though that's what I think I love this winning thing we've got going and I love the drive and effort that the team has shown more often than not this season.

I understand that finishing dead last is better for the team in the long run but there is nothing that will make me want this team to lose.

I know the end goal is a cup but only 7 or 8 teams at the start of any season have a realistic shot and I'm Ok with the sens not making the playoffs or not winning the cup. I'm happy to watch my team play the 82 games and cheer them on every time. That doesn't make me any less of a fan than those who believe we will make the playoff or those who are dreaming of Yakupov. Why isn't it OK to just watch the games?

If we end up with the 11th pick in the draft then that's where we end up and let the carnival begin again.

Its ok to win, enjoy it as they come for they will be hard to come by.

And no Snoopy, Im not gone or disappeared, its called work...As for your thought process after 9 games, Florida and Canes are bottom 5 teams, they will fall back down to where they belong....with us.

Here is my NHL question of the day for all of you that are interested to chime in:

Our Ottawa Senators franchise is heading in the right direction as we've established the need for a rebuild and are currently executing on that plan. That being said which of our fellow Canadian teams is MOST OVERDUE for a rebuild of their own - Calgary or Montreal?

Sens improve every game. The d was great tonight, minus that one goof that cost the first goal. If you can't find anything good to say about last nights performance, you dont want to and that's your choice. but whether you want to admit it or not, the d was good last night. they werent sloppy the whole game.

and I have been watching a lot of games, it's early in the season. Every team is sloppier than they will be 20 games from now, except Washington. Like it or not, Ottawa is playing on par with the majority of the league.

Spezza was in the right place at the right time, Greening did all the work on that goal & Spezza was just lucky to be where the puck happened to go. Spezza gets way too much credit most of the time & deserves much more fault for some of the bone head plays he makes at the worse of times. He is a talented, skilled player but his defensive liabilities are still prominent in his game unfortunately.

I thought Anderson played well for most of the game & kept them in it, I thought Greening had another outstanding game especially catching up to the speedy Skinner to nullify a break away & I thought that Daugavins had a pretty good game with a nuber of chnaces for his first call up this yr.

very exciting game to watch last night...had it not been for Ward in the 2nd we may have put it away before the 3rd.
Bottom line we may not be a contending team, but all we can ask is for is:
a solid effort x
our leaders being leaders x
solid goaltending x
never give up x
aggressive exciting hockey x

we may or may not make the playoffs, but even if they lose with this (McLean hockey) effort it will be entertaining!

And as the second biggest Goncahr/Kuba hater, both have stepped up their game.
Kuba is playing strong in our own end
Gonchar is making plays, and playing well in their end.

Perhaps they took McLean's advice
"you don't like to get booed...play better"
watch how fast the fans go from boos to cheers, with solid effort!
Also great game by the Daug, he needs to stay.
Please do not move Greening from Spezza and Michalek, they are on fire, and need consistency.
Bring on the Panthers!

Spezza is a man on a mission this year. If the sens make the playoffs it's because he's an MVP candidate! He's finding ways to pick this team up and it's a lot of fun to watch.

A 3 game winning streak sounds more like a playoff contender then a last place team. So far so good. GO SENS GO!!!

Yes and I agree with you, lets see where we stand come 25 games into the season, like I said, young teams and especially those rebuilding, usually hit the wall around 20-25 games.

Things will sort themselves out, we will be bottom 5 come trade deadline day, where we will ship out Kuba, Neil, Foligno or Regin, Alfie maybe even Michalek...

Long live the rebuild!

Remember the whole "bad teams find a way to lose" mantra...Well that was ALMOST us last night. Rundblad could've made it 3-0 when he wiffed on that empty netter and put the game out of reach.

However, a win is a win and there are lots of positives to take from that.

Spezza is picking up right where he left off last season, he's on a mission right now! I'm glad I picked him in all my fantasy leagues!

I now come to this site when I want to gather negative energy. Thanks EEYore. Your negative assessment of every situation is awesome (and apparently insightful?). Someone predicts this team to finish 8-11 and you say "are you OK with this?"..Didn't now the outcome of the team was determined by fans' expectations. Maybe Yakopov is the next Ovechkin but, how many cups has Ovechkin won? Also, if we get Yakopov, what if there is another stud prospect in the CHL (there is usually some every year), do we cheer to tank again? (I know you will) You'll find a negative in every situation to justify your beliefs (what a sad existance) and a reason to cheer against (not for) your "favorite" team...you are so enlightening, thanks for your expertise(I coulnd't find sarcastic font)

Last I heard BM may wait until this weekend to make his decision. I think they're hoping at least 1 of the injured prove healthy before they send him back to SEL, which is what I think they are leaning towards as they've been guaranteed his role will be significant over there.

It's a young team... mistakes will be made... In regulation they were outshot 28-27.. and outshot 6-1 in OT. But a win is a win. They won there for the first time since 2007. Sens always get more penalties than PP's..
And they won in a shootout... something they have not done a lot in the past.

Blowing a 2 goal lead late in the 3rd?
Barely escaping in a shoootout?
We havent beaten a top 8 team yet.
Goons and role players always score early in the season, then the talent level rises and the Stars have to produce. Spezza has to keep this up for 82 games, which is doubtful.

So what exactly have we shown the NHL? that we can barely beat bottom 5 teams?

Tookie... same as Toronto... Sens are only 3 pts behind them...
But it's still early... let's see where all the teams are after 20 games.
I really like Daug's game last night. The whole line of Condra-Smith-Da ugavins played well... and must have been a line in Bingo last year. They seemed to have chemistry right from puck drop.

He'll still be 17 in June 2013, but hopefully he enters the draft then. He will be eligible because of the following, though:

All players who will be 18 years old before September 15 and not older than 20 years old before December 31 are eligible for selection for that year's NHL Entry Draft. In addition, non-North American players over the age of 20 are eligible.

thanks for teasing with a little of what you will bring to us some day. It may be hard to take today, but in couple years when we are back in the playoffs, and contending again, many of our future stars will be here to help YOU, and fight to play with YOU, as you cement yourself as the second line centre.
Go back to Sweden, get some home cooked meals, tear up the SEL, go the WJC, pound some of those other 18 year olds into submission, while we struggle for this year, deciding who can stay and who will go. Come back next year with that confidence that is bursting to come out,
We Sens fans believe you will be awesome for us one day soon!

Don't get Tookie started, he is bound to start tanking next year for the 2013 draft! INCINERATE FOR NATE!

See our strategy should be to come in last place 5 years in a row. Keep all those players in the minors as to not burn a year of eligibility then *KABLAM* bring them all in the same year and there you go, 10 year dynasty!

On a serious note, I think the Zibanejad call was the correct one, that was my gut feeling too, and our management knows best.

Sad to see Zibanejad return to Sweden. I guess he will get a year older and a little more mature.. but I can't see how developing in the SEL helps his NA game... because it doesn't. But it is as it is... I'm just disappointed.

Now the issue is -- who is the #2 centre?

Have we heard if Regin needs more surgery? If he does -- he's out up to 6 mos... If not.. then probably 4 - 6 wks.. that's a lot of missed games.

Does DaCosta step in as 2nd line centre?

As for a Z-bad playing to survive and not make mistakes... he was playing too tense -- afraid any errors he made would be the end of his NHL season.

But I believe the SEL finishes it's season in March... so he will be back here then to stay. Djursgarden (sp?) does not appear to have a good team this season -- so probably not in the playoff picture. PS Zibby -- bring Silfverberg with you next time.

-losing 60-70 games in a season is exhausting and depressing. it doesn't help our veterans. and it doesn't help our young guys learn. guys stop trying when they have no hope. keep winning and you give guys like cowen and rundblad a good growth opportunity

-being the very last in the league is unlikely. our team is weak and fragile but i see a handful of other teams that are in worse shape than us.

-drafting between 5-15 has produced lots of top NHL talent.

-we may have an over abundance of 3rd liners but drafting 1st over all doesnt solve that! (trading these players for picks and then package those picks at the draft could get us 1st line potential perhaps)

***and now my real point. MURRAY IS THE KEY NOT YAKUPOV. he has to make the right trades and signing at the right time to do this rebuild right.
