Sens Stun Jackets

A late October game against the Columbus Blue Jackets doesn't exactly scream excitement.

But last night was completely different.  With late goals by Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek, the Senators capped off one of the most memorable games I have ever been to at Scotiabank Place.

As the scoreboard counted down the final minute, it was looking like an ugly loss for the Sens.  A couple weak goals got by Anderson and the Blue Jackets looked poised to pick up their first win of the season.  After a late penalty to David Rundblad, some fans made an early exit thinking this one was done.

Those fans must be kicking themselves this morning.

With just 36 second to play, Spezza found a loose puck out front of Mason and ignited the Saturday night crowd.  And just 31 seconds later, a perfect deflection from Milan Michalek off a well placed shot from Gonchar sent SBP into an all out frenzy.

With the win, the Sens are now 3-5-0 on the season.

Another strong game from Sergei Gonchar on Saturday.  Really liked his game against the Jets on Thursday night and he continued his strong play against Columbus.  Gonchar had a couple points in this one and was strong defensively in his 22 minutes of ice time.

Obviously a strong game from Spezza too as he picked up three points.  Spezza has 11 points in 8 games so far this season.

It wasn't exactly the most entertaining opening 40 minutes but certainly worth the price of admission in the final twenty.  This one will definitely go down as one of the best regular season games I have ever been to.

  • Special thanks go out to the good folks at Wiser's.  Had a chance to sit in the Wiserhood box last night (explains my late post-game blog today) which made the game that much more enjoyable.  Be sure to stop by their Facebook page and join the Wiserhood!
  • Trade talk is heating up across the NHL.  Was told last night that Bryan Murray is still looking to move a defenceman but is in no hurry to get something done.  There are a couple of teams that are looking to add blueliners.

Trade idea...

Gonchar and Alfredsson to Detroit for 1st and 2nd rnd picks(do it much closer to trade deadline to reduce the cap hit.

With Detroit haveing roughly 6million of cap space they could afford what would be about a 3million cap hit at trade deadline.

I think their roster would greatly benefit from another veteran powerplay QB and a veteran winger to go along with their other veteran swedes. They would really fill out their top 9 forwards and top 6 D.

I know trading Alfie would be tough but a 1st and 2nd would be huge assets

Thoughts?

Wow what a horrible trade with Detroit that would be. A 25th to 30th draft pick and a late second for Alfredsson and Gonchar yikes.. I'm glad you are not in charge of the senators.

Who here thinks that the Vermette trade was worth it because we got Robin Lehner but Leclaire is garbage. I know if look at it that we didn't get Lehner we got a draft pick then of course it wasn't worth it but I'm talking about looking at it as though we got Lehner and Leclaire.

Should have put Filatov in the line up try his hardest against them.

Are you absolutely brainless? Ottawa fans would hate trading Alfie. Plus Gonchar?!?!?!?! ? I would never trade Alfie unless we get some crazy deal and also we aren't trying to benefit the red wings "they need a QB ..." and a first rounder and 2nd BM would be fired if he did that.

This Sens team is way more entertaining than last year's team. The Minnesota and Jackets games have been some of the best games I've ever been to. We haven't been good every game but I've seen glimpses of a new compete level that I can't remember seeing from the Sens in the past few seasons. Not sure what this should be attributed to, but MacLean's coaching, Spezza and Neil's leadership, and Michalek's play deserve lots of credit. Can't wait to see what this team will be able to do in a couple years with more experience and consistency.

This discussion has been beaten to death. Alfie will to be traded to a contender if he requests it. He will otherwise retire an Ottawa Senator. It's up to him, he's earned the right in his contract, and there is nothing more to discuss. It really doesn't matter what you, I, or even Murray thinks should happen. Alfie is the one who gets to decide and Sens fans should be just fine with that.

Nice finish, it was looking pretty grim heading into that final minute but what a finish! Nash said after the loss last night that good teams find a way to win and bad teams find a way to lose. Columbus found a way to lose that game big time, Sens got lucky but I'll take it. Gonchar looked way better, and I had to actually pinch myself after seeing Kuba score but with a pass like that anybody could score haha

yeah but sometimes that is a mistake because this might just be a hot streak from Kuba. I know we shouldn't use Brian Burke as a role model ( especially when he was on the leafs )for the sens general manager but he did the same thing with Matt Stajan and now Stajan is not on a hot streak and they traded him at the prime time. Maybe thats what the sens should do.

Actually Garrioch's article today in the Sun was interesting...

Based on that, I propose the following trade...
Kuba and a fourth to MTL for Kostitsyn and a second to OTT.

Yes we are divisional rivals but Montreal is desperete and we
are re-building. Both players are UFA's after this season so this really can't bite either team in the a$$.

Montreal get's a vet dman that they desperatly need and we get a stop gap top 6 player once Zbad goes back to Sweden this week. Also, we improve our draft position which is line with the current re-build.

Win, win situation here!

I never think the game is over till the buzzer but overtime seemed best case last night.

Highlights for me started with the girl singing the anthems, wow for 12 years old, struggled a bit on the Canadian Anthem but knocked the American one out of the building.

When you can hear the fans on TV loud you know its off the hook in the building.

Ok maybe trading Alfie and Gonchar for a 1st and 2nd wouldn't be the best since. The return should be a little higher. But what if you consider Detroit giving us 2 1st rounders.

I love Alfie but I honestly think trading him would be ideal. I know he's important in the locker room but getting a 1st would be huge. This years draft is going to be one of the best in quite a while. Even if its a 25th pick it would bring us a real solid player. And that's if we wouldn't move up with it.its just not worth keeping Alfie around just because he's Alfie. You have to look at him as an asset and an asset that's about to retire. So the best thing to do is use that asset to get more valueble assets instead of just waving goodbye

Also I'm wondering what the team is going to do with Michalek. Because he's an awesome player just entering his prime. If we decide to keep him and build around him and Spezza great but if not...now may be a good time to trade him for something big

Last night here in Winnipeg, CBC showed the Jets in Standard Def only, and the Leafs in High Def only.
And the Sens were nowhere to be found.

it would be a lot more difficult for ottawa to trade alfie this season than some of you think. he does have one more year on his contract which is a 4.875 cap hit. not many contending teams would want that next season. even if he retires this year, because he signed the deal after he was 35 the cap hit will remain whether he plays or not.

as for gonchar and alfie to detroit for a couple picks, that will never happen. not only will it put us about 8 million under the cap but it would put detroit way over. they wouldn't be able to keep the extra 10 million of their combined contracts next season. not to mention a first and 2nd rounder for those two is underselling them big time

Seems to me like the AHL has been good for Filatov, certainly didn't hurt Spezza's development.

He really didnt dominate the A when he was in the Columbus system but he seems to be doing it now. he'll be back up soon enough hopefully with further refinement in his game.
I'm pretty sure Ottawa has handled him with care during this entire process and they are on the same page with where he fits on the big club.
He is an elite offensive propect and I'm excited to see him play again too!

He has 4 points in 5 AHL games, 3 of which came in his first game. I'd hardly say he's "dominating" at that level.

In retrospect, maybe just getting out from that brutal contract was worth the trade.

when michalek scored that goal it was a crazy moment, could not have asked for a better finish. only wish is to have been at the game instead. just surreal.

reading gonchar's comments post-game, looks like he has really upped the ante over the past two games and maybe that one game off he was watching vids of his first few games and realized. he is a highly skilled offensive defensemen and the sens will only do much more better as long as he plays to his strengths.

great to see the players' celebration on the winning goal. alfie looked 10 years younger, spezza and michalek looked like brand new rookies.

I was happy with the Sens in the second period. They finally used their speed and had lots of puck support. If you watch Detroit play, you'll notice how much support they give their teammates - just ignore the disaster against the Caps. I'm hoping we'll see more consistency moving forward. It is still early in the year after all.

Alfie looks like he's more healthy than he has been in the past two seasons. I've really missed the jump and drive in his game (which he's shown in the past two or three games). Let him take off next game - even if he wants to play.

Michalek is also flying out there! He's so quick on the puck and is so strong - he reminds me of Hossa. Keep it up Michalek!
