Auld Gets the Start in Washington

Coming off an ugly loss on home ice on Thursday night, the Ottawa Senators travel to Washington to take on the undefeated Capitals.

With Craig Anderson struggling through the first four games of the year, Paul MacLean will go with the back up against the Caps.  It will be Alex Auld's first start of the season.

The Caps are expected to be among the best in the East this year so it will be a tough test for MacLean's group.  Washington has won their first three games of the season including their most recent win, a 3-2 triumph over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Tomas Vokoun is expected to get the start for the Capitals.

After going with seven defenceman on Thursday, MacLean will revert to the more traditional 12 forward/6 defenceman look.  Zenon Konopka will come back in to the line up and Brian Lee is the healthy scratch.

As reported yesterday, forward Bobby Butler suffered a pulled groin muscle against the Avalanche and is listed as doubtful. Erik Condra will take his spot.

The game can be seen live on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada and should be available for streaming on the CBC website.

  • Not a bad debut for Nikita Filatov down in Binghamton.  He racked up two goals and an assist and has suggested that he may end up getting credit for the hat trick.  Should the Sens decide to return Zibanejad to Sweden after the nine game trial, Filatov should be back up with the team.  You can see the highlights from Filatov's debut here.

This guy needs to be in the Sens lineup. We will probably see him in Ottawa again by the end of the month.

Filatov is too good to be in the AHL, but I am not mad as long as he is playing.. I'd rather he play 10-15 games down there, vs sit in the press box up here. I'm sure he will be back and great once he is.

Foligno - Smith - Neil

kuba really hasnt been anywhere near as bad as people keep suggesting.

one thing to keep in mind is the number of faceoff starts guys take in the opposition end vs the defensive end. Kuba has been shouldering a large percentage of the defensive zone starts along with karlsson.

out of our three veteran d, kuba has been the least of our worries. realistically none of the three belong in the top 4 in the nhl at this point but you play with what you have.

I think it would be nice to see a

Cowen - Karlsson
Kuba - Rundblad
Phillips - Gonchar

Let's face it, Cowen has been our most solid D this year, and Karlsson likes having a big defensive guy to both allow him to be creative, and to feel protected. Think about him with sutton a few years back.

I understand the "two young guys" theory, but the young guys are playing better than the vets. Put Cowen with either Karlsson and play them against the tops lines, or Cowen with Rundblad, and let them feel comfortable and be creative, as the players they are.

I think he will fit in just fine. He´s playing big minutes, both PK and PP. His numbers are quite good for the SEL since it's a more defensive league. Not afraid to use his body and has a good work ethic. He's also an assistant captain on his team despite being one of the younger guys.

He has impressed on me each time I´ve seen him play. Has developed a lot since last season.

they need d and a couple vets to supplement their core of youth, we need forwards and a further injection of youth.

We know Mika is going to be contributor for the sens in the future. The only question is when. For that reason I would rather he went back to the SEL for the remainder of this year and we gave players like Filatov, Regin, Butler - players who have something to prove THIS year - his ice time.

I think at some point relatively soon Rundblad will spend some time in Bingo and, at that point, Lee will be back in the line up.

0 #22 CJam613 2011-10-15 14:49
Gonna have to disagree. Zibanejad has the drive, work ethic and energy to learn how to score in the NHL playing with Ottawa. He's worth keeping around because he provides a high octane game and as soon as he starts scoring against the top level he'll gain a lot of confidence (just like I think when Filatov gets his first NHL goal with Ottawa the floodgates will open.)

Also Rundblad shouldn't be sent down. He's been one of our better defencemen since getting his start against Minny and as his confidence grows he will continue to improve. He just needs to adjust to the speed of the NHL and he won't get used to that playing in the A.

I see your point CJam and agree with everything you say about Zib. My point is we have more time to allow him to develop than we do with Filatov, Butler et al and for that reason it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for Zib to go back to Sweden.

I'm not saying that Rundblad should be sent down, just that I think he will be.

To the "Spoken Flea"

I agree. It's so bad I have separated turn overs and give aways. The last game we gave it away (Jason), we got beat for it (EriK), we let them just take it away from us (Kuba), we could not recover it (Gonchar) and we flipped it to the rookie with two guys on him (Phillips).

The Semin-Regin match up is pretty even in speed...it's the game for us tonight...Jason has got to own Backstrom???

Why in the hell would Ottawa want Hemsky. He is injured (again) -- he's even worse than Spezza & Michalek for being out of the lineup. They tried that.. would be a big no from me. No way to trading Rundblad.

heard that CBJ are shopping Brassard and that he could be dealt to an eastern conference team within one week, he would be a great addition as he would be our 2nd line center

I've had enough of Chris Phillips on the PK.

Will somebody please admit that the experiment has failed, the 3 year extension was a huge mistake, and CP4 is NOT setting the kind of example that young defencemen should be looking to learn from?

PS. Great goal by Spezza, very bad call. vokoun was down and out, "interference" should be negligible when the goalie is on his belly moving in the opposite direction.

Hopefully after tonight, there will be no more "Rundblad needs some conditioning time in the AHL"

He is brimming with confidence and looks strides ahead of where Karlsson was 2 years ago. There were a few instances in the 2nd where he easily could have scored.

Also... what would we do if we sent Rundblad down? Carkner is still on the shelf; if Gonchar misses any time that would mean that someone like Weircioch would have to come up in addition to Lee stepping in. Rookie mistakes everywhere.

Dominated the Caps. Shutdown Ovi. Vokoun was the singular reason why they won.

Spezz'as first period goal should have counted; and I think would have changed the dynamic of the game. Refs screwed that call up.

We have a wonderful team. Phillips, Gonchar & Kuba are the only 3 bringing this team down. We'd be proving critics wrong had we not resign Phillips. Why did we feel forced to? We could've just let him walk and by then Phillips would've had to choose whether to play elsewhere or retire. Kuba's contract ends (happily) at the end of the season and we're stuck with Gonchar another year next year. By then Noesen, Stone & Puempel will arrive along with Spezza, Zibanejad, Filatov and Michalek and then, will finally **** the rest of the NHL! Thumbs down for ****** the rest of the NHL!
