Preparing for Minnesota

Having lost their first two games, the Ottawa Senators were back on the ice at the SensPlex this morning in preparation for their home opener tomorrow night.

It will be a special night in Ottawa as they welcome back members of the first year Ottawa Senators in the first of many theme nights in the club's 20th Anniversary Season.

Of course there will also be another welcome and it's one that won't get nearly as warm a reception.  Dany Heatley will make his second visit to Scotiabank Place, this time as a member of the Minnesota Wild.  Certainly don't expect as dramatic a reception as the last time Dany came to town but you can bet the boo's will rain down.

Ottawa will be looking to clean up some of the defensive lapses that have burned them in the first two games.  Fans knew there would be some rough nights with a young and inexperienced defence core but right now it's the veterans that need to step up.

Sergei Gonchar has taken a beating in the comment section of this site and with good reason.  His play with the puck has been decent but away from it he has been downright awful.  His compete level needs to come way up or he could find himself watching from the sidelines.

Speaking of line up changes, it sounds like MacLean is still considering a couple to his line up.  Butler and Rundblad were both scratched on Saturday in Toronto but could find their way back in to the mix on Tuesday.  Add to that the fact that Regin looks close to a return and we could see a few changes to the Ottawa line up.

Here is how the Sens looked this morning...

  • Greening-Spezza-Zibanejad
  • Michalek-Da Costa-Butler
  • Foligno-Regin-Neil
  • Smith-Konopka-Condra

Daniel Alfredsson did not skate.  He has been battling a head cold the past few days and took today to rest up.  Filatov skated as the extra today and could end up being a scratch on Tuesday.

  • Cowen-Gonchar
  • Kuba-Karlsson
  • Phillips-Rundblad

Rundblad was paired with Phillips and looks like he could take the place of Brian Lee.

Would assume it has to do with replacing a right handed shot with a right handed shot. Also important to note that no line up decisions have been made as of yet.

I would pretty much sit EVERY right handed shot ahead of Lee though, if he is going to still get the short end of the stick here just move the guy...he has demonstrated that he is more than a capable player.

Agree -- Lee should NOT be coming out. Time to make the vets realize they will not get an easy ride this year.

Apparently Gonchar played 23 min the other night. WHY? Do you think that could have been one of the reasons they lost?

I wonder if when regin comes back, is there a possibility they play zibanejad on someones wing. With the play of da costa, i thing Zibanejad may be the odd man out.

If any Sens fans get depressed this year. Just hop on over to HF boards and do a little light reading int he Leafs forum. This morning they've got a nice thread where after two games they're fervently talking about Phaneuf for the Norris. That's right. The guy who can't skate backwards. Amazing.

Oh and I agree with everyone who says Lee should be playing. Anyone sitting before Kuba and Gonchar is just garbage. It's understandable that the coach doesn't want to lose his veterans by not giving them 4-5 games to get into the swing of things but lets be honest losing Kuba would be a good thing at this point in time. Kuba's career is done and Ottawa needs to stop pretending he's going to turn it around.

I'll bet the only reason Gonchar isn't getting benched is because he would be untradeable if other teams saw that he an't even crack the top 6 for the Sens. Murray is hoping he turns it around so someone is willing to pick up his contract or else we are probably going to end up paying him to play in Russia next year.

I don't understand sitting Lee. Everyone was down on him not long ago. The end of last season and the start of this one, he's been rock solid.

Why do we bench someone who is finally showing his former potential? Not only that, he's easily our most reliable D in terms of strength, positioning and coverage.

Not only should he be in our lineup, he should be logging top 4 minutes.

Yeah, I think that Lee shouldn't be out based on merit, but they have to sit him. Kuba and Gonchar must be marketted until the trade deadline. Runblad must get some ice time to remain happy. The result is that one of the most reliable (lately) D on the team is sitting at a time where that is the aspect of the game that must be improved. Runblad in wil only make this worse, but I get it.

The bad news, we have 9 mil invested in 2 dmen that seems like they're still on summer vacation.

The good news, we have lots of talent to replace them.

Now Melnyk, Murray and MacLean have got to start sending a message to the players that your salary isn't entitlement to minutes...

Third row from the glass, HOLLA AT ME!

Not liking the coach at all at this point. Filatov already given the boot and he takes out our best D-man so far (Lee)

Lee played a little over 16min of ice time last game. If the coach thought he was that brilliant, I'm certain he would have played more...

I would bet Filatov sits before Zibanejad. Zibanejad has shown that he can produce offensive chances on a line with the likes of Neil, meanwhile Filatov hasn't done a thing while being lined with Spezza.

Zibanejad is more physical and he goes to the net more as a result. Filatov is small and has a hard time making space for himself, unless he is shooting from above the face off circles.

i think filatov isnt doing anything even when on a line with spezza because both filatov and spezza like to have the puck on their stick, both play makers. might want to try splitting them up or filatov will have to learn to play a more simple game when on a line with spezza

Gonchar apparently played 23 min... did he deserve to play that much? I say no. I think Phillips, Gonchar & Kuba have to take quite a bit of responsibility for the 2 losses this team has -- well at least the loss to the Leafs.

Gonchar & Kuba are untradeable. No team that is a contender would take either of those 2 at the deadline.

Nice message to send to Lee. You have been playing better than any of the 3 vets on D.. but sorry you come out of the lineup.

What message does that send to the young players. They are having problems.. so they sit. Vets on D have problems and they get the most minutes. Does anyone else see a problem with this?

I would sooner lose with youth.. than a defenseman who is playing like he doesn't give a shit.

I'd like to go to the game tomorrow but Im a little bit late, it's a 3hours drive from where I live and I don't have tickets, I looked a bit on capital tickets but could only find seats in the 300s, I'd like to sit somewhere in the 100s and I need 3 tickets, Im sorry if it isn't the best place to ask but what would be the best for me ? buy from scalpers ? I'm also not very good with the Internet and not very good with english so it would be nice if someone could help me !

Kuba hasn't played that badly at all. Kuba played very well against the Leafs. Phillip and Gonchar are a different story. However, Lee wasn't on the ice for the a lot of the mess that happened so it is hard to say whether he would fair any better.

MacLean said he wouldn't mind putting a few of our defenders on the bench. But he can't. You keep the assets you want to trade on the ice. If Lee is good, you don't trade him.

Last season also proved that not many teams want Lee. He was put on waivers and no team even thought about.

That doesn't proove anything...he isn't the same player he was then now. I am by no means saying he is going to be a perennial all-star(or that he ever will be) but I suspect that after his improved play last season and this there is no chance he would clear waivers again....The other 3 mind you I am not so sure.

I would suggest checking what is available on www.capitaltickets.ca first. If that doesn't work, sites like Kijiji or Used Ottawa would be good places to check. If you still can't find anything, there are often people selling out front. That can be a little tricky though. Good luck!

if Lee's coming out, they have a reason, if filatov is coming out, they have a reason, butler etc.

I'm at the game tomorrow in the 100's and pumped!

win or lose, I know I'll be entertained.

From what I have seen Lee has played a lot better than Gonchar. I know Phillips is 1 of 3 left side D.. so I guess that's why he is in.

Lee should play. Gonchar's ass should be in the pressbox.

What does McLean have against Butler? Not working hard enough in practice? Did he think he would automatically play with Spezza? The point is... he should. They have a chemistry that at least McLean should give a shot at. When he played without Spezza he was not very affective.

I'm going tomorrow as well... don't forget if you are there by 4:30 you get to see the players walk up the 'red carpet' -- should you care to.

All I know is they had better play a full 60 min. I can't believe in the Ottawa Sun (yeah I know) -- they have in the game setup.. Ottawa has the edge on D. Really? That's incredible. Minny must have some real bad defensemen.

neil smith winchester

condra/filatov/konopka sit out

This stubborness is downright infuriating and I cannot stand for it!!!!!!
