For Ottawa, it is a tall task right out of the gate. The perennial powerhouse, Detroit Red Wings, are one of the most consistent, well-coached organizations in the league and are always a threat. Add in the fact that it’s there home opener and you know the Sens are in tough.
But if anyone would knows how to beat the Wings, it’s Paul MacLean. A staple in the Wings organization, MacLean is now on our side and will make his Sens debut behind the bench against his former employer. Not a bad way to start his Ottawa coaching career.

Craig Anderson gets the start in goal. Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:00 PM. The game can be seen on Sportsnet East with radio coverage available on the Team1200.
Let’s get this thing started! GO SENS GO!!
Could we not keep Lee instead of Kuba? Lee was by far the more consistent and better of the two.
GO SENS GO!!
I don't want this to be another season where we are questioning the coaches decisions. I know Butler has been less than impressive but the guy needs to be in the top 6 in order to be successful and the same goes for DaCosta. Sticking them on the 4th line against the other teams' grinders is not the right move IMO. They're just going to get thrown around easily by the bigger players.
As for Kuba, from what I've seen, this guy has not even earned himself a spot on this team and IMO Rundblad has played better than Kuba has.
I'm not doubting MacLean's decisions, but I sincerely hope that the lineup will not be exactly the same for tomorrow night's game. Hopefully we come out on top in both games.
but I have to comment on my dismay on sitting Lee...here we go again!
What is it with Lee being the perenial whipping boy!
So if he whined and screamed for a trade... would we then play him?
I have to say that he was probably at worst our 3rd best d-man coming out of camp, and his reward is a scratch for game 1.
I gotta tell you if I am his agent, he would have played his last game as a Sen, and would demand a move!
This makes no sense, and to be fair, in the grand scheme of things will it make all that much difference for tonights game, probably not, but he has more than earned the right to play, and would not blame him if he demanded a move.
Shame on Sens management, I could list 3 players who should be sitting ahead of Lee. What lesson does this teach the young players... get a large contrct play like crap and you start!
GO SENS GOS!!
Hope they show up for every single game, and play with intensity at every shift.
Should be an exciting team to watch and truly enjoy !!
Thanks for posting the complete lineup early Mr.SensChirp .
Rockin Robert
Did I read that right? MC Hammer? when did he come out of retirement? is he bringing the flashy gold pants?
Don't worry Johne. It will be Hammertime tomorrow night when Konopka draws in to the line up!
Yea I plan on seeing the game tomorrow for sure. I mean I love my Sens, but MC Hammer makes me time travel to 1990. Filip Kuba wasn't even in the NHL then, those were better days
hey Johne... in a similar boat, but not MC Hammer, but the Michael Jackson Tribute... I know I know, have to keep the wife happy... I dont hav PVR, anybody know a way to watch the game afterwards, does TSN replay the game?
thanks
lol oh I'm not going just to make the gf happy, more like shes coming along to make me happy
2 legit, 2 legit 2 quit!
if you get nhl gamecenter from nhl.com you can view replays of the games any time. im not sure what blackout restrictions apply, but its pretty awesome. im trying it out this year instead of centerice.
All the good teams lost yesterday boston to flyers montreal to toronto canucks to penguins
As long as you don't want to see Vanilla Ice as well...but am pretty sure he has converted into rocker mode lol
Thanks Johne,
and be sure to be ready when its "Hammertime"
enjoy!
Personally, I'd rather see Runblad because I think his game is built for Detroit hockey. Plus, give the kid a chance to play against one of his idols; Lindstrom.
This will be offensive minded hockey, Rundblad would be more entertaining. However, Lee deserves to play, Kuba should sit out. Sucks for Lee if he ends up the odd man out again; because he did play well in pre-season.
after 2 years of suffering acid indegestion by watching the dismal, and careless display of hockey fromo Kuba, I want to use the analogy of a used car.
how much would you pay for a 1986 VW Scirocco, that won't stard, and is owed $4 million? Exactly!
He has 0 value, everyone knows it, and on top of it are hurting our team, & our younger better players by insisting to play him!
Please cut our losses, and be rid of KUBA!
Fila - Spezz - Alfie
Gonch EK
9mm - ZBad - BB/Da Costa
Blads JC/Da Costa
Give Da Costa a chance to see if he can rip em like he was in the Rookie Tourney
Why can't we have better writers... Brennan is no better
That said, I like my chances of seeing Rundblad tonight if lard ass said otherwise
Pfftt not even lol
blech...I would have rather seen Rundblad..but give Lee his due...he has earned a chance to play.
JETTISSON KUBA ALREADY.
Please and thank you.
someone should start an online petition to get kuba out and Im sure all sens faithful would sign up.
SON OF A BITCH! Stupid!
Uggghhhh
Kuba should be in the same boat as Avery FFS
I swear man Blads BETTER not go back to Skelleftea cause of that useless dumbass
The sens will win this one 3-2 !
GO SENS GO
I think Montreal will be in last place in our div this year. Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal will fight it out for that last playoff spot, probably along with Carolina and maybe Winnipeg.
GO SENS GO !!
http://senators.nhl.com/v2/ext/Audio/111007_MacLean.mp3
Lee sitting never made any sense. Da Costa on the 3rd line is nice too, i think he and Foligno could have some nice chemistry. Glad to see the right lineup will be dressed tonight! GO SENS GO!!!
halleluah!!!!!
Spezza 526 GP 532 pts
Smith 71 GP 12 pts
Da Costa 4 GP 0 pts
Zibanejad 0 GP O pts
Thank God reason prevailed... all kidding aside if they had thought about sitting Lee, his manager should have been fired for not demanding a move!
And on another note, and perhaps a dumb question...if we sit Rundblad tonight, does the 10 game clock start? or is it only 10 games in which he is playing?
I'm pretty sure he has to be in the lineup for it to count towards the 10.
Hoping that's the case anyways.
yah that would only make sense
thanks Jabs
Exactly -- Kuba is a waste of space. If he sucks tonight.. then pressbox and time for Rundblad to get into the lineup.
It should not be Lee coming out.. but Kuba.
Condra will not be coming out of the lineup when Regin returns.
FYI -- Kopitar scored for LA against the Rangers... Curse you John Muckler -- you were a waste of space as well.
if this is the case, then we are wasting a good opportunity to see the kid before he goes!
This is precisely what I mean that keeping Kuba is hurting the developement! I am a big Murray supporter, but I find that when it comes to his ridiculous signings (Gerber, Leclaire, Gonchar, Kovalev, Kuba) he is beyond stubborn and insists on playing them to the detirment of the team.
Cut your losses Murray, if we can survive losing Fisher, Kelly, then please finisht the rebuild and let Kuba earn his money in the freakin minors!
Where is Lessard when we really need him!
I think you're right, I heard something to that affect ont he radio. It's part of the problem of having a larger starting roster.
On another note, not good news about Campoli last night. Nothing has been said about the lower body injury, but the immediate signing of Joe Callahan to a one-year-contra ct says it all.
I found this on Dobber Hockey:
When a rookie plays 10 games, the first year of his entry-level deal kicks in. Generally, that means that the team will have to pay him a non-capped salary one year sooner than they would have. The entry-level cap is for three years, after which the player can make as much as 20 percent of the team's salary cap. So for fiscal reasons, the 10-game plateau is key.
Filatov-Spezza-Michalek
Greening-Zibanejad-Alfredsson
Condra-Da Costa-Butler
Foligno-Smith-Neil
So they could sit Rundbland for 74 games in the press box and not lose a year of his ELC?
That is an odd rule if you're correct. Aside from him demanding a trade for doing it!
One day you're going to have to let it go and just accept the fact Paul Maclean got the job and not you... On behalf of the Ottawa Senators organization I would like to wish you the best of luck.
Yes they could do that, but obviously no one ever would as there would be not only no benefit, but also very obvious harm to that player's development.
Would the defense pairings be :
Phillips - Karlsson
Cowen - Gonchar
Kuba - Lee
Or, is it a switch of Karlsson and Lee in pairings ??
OK, just saw that you made correction on your Lineup of Defense Pairings SORRY !!!!
Rockin Robert
Good luck to you Ottawa fans!!!
To clear one point... It was Muckler who signed Gerber.
sens beat the wings 2-1
Zibanejad with the OT winner.
Yep.. I created a Zibby and Cowen player haha
Why on earth would a team sit a young player on an ELC for 74 games, just to avoid him burning a year. For one thing, you are taking up a roster spot for the whole year. Secondly, you are seriously hurting your prospects development.
It's not an odd rule, you are just presenting an absurd scenerio.
http://217.23.9.194/~sportsb1/channel3.html
Enjoy!
Thank you as always!
Really appreciate your streams.
Why did you create them ? they are in the game...
Great quality and up before the game, thank you very much for the stream!
I haven't screamed his name in fury for the last time I know it!
Time for tonight's prediction! I'm calling 3-1 Senators.
GO SENS! PRAISE ALFIE! WHOOOT HOCKEY IS FINALLY BACK!
You sir are my favorite person right now
The position of all knowing curmudgeon is already filled by Tookie. I know it's absurd. That's why I added the line about Rundbland demanding a trade. Thanks for your input though.
There's an eyeball in his glove...
and thanks to the guys who put the streams up!!
Fucking Gonchar with his oh well he got by me attitude, the money he is paid giving up like that pisses me off.
Kovalevish
-no goals
-dumba$$ giveaway by Phillips leading to a goal
let the worst +/- count begin
-dumba$$ penalty by Neil
Just waiting for the 3rd, when the team shows up too little too late.
Alfie is looking much better though! This team just needs a good 20-30 games to find some chemistry, I won't make any judgments until then...
Overall playing better than I expected, slightly
You do realize the Team is rebuliding? So who is Dumba$$ now
When Alex Auld is your backup, you'll never have a goalie controversy.
Have you been watching Andersiv?[/quot e yep I'm watching the game I will admit there were some softys but it's not all his fault the d have been giving awful giveaways
Did you see him leave his net for no reason and get scored on? Not an NHL quality goalie.
Defense is not doing him any favours.
They sure are getting some hockey lessons tonight.
Don't get upset first game, we need to play all three periods like the first and we will be fine.
lots of season to get that down.
someone who can finish.....hope fully they finally develop some chemistry
All of them were because of silly turnovers. That's it.
if we finish last this season I will be getting his name on my jersey!
he will have been our best player ever if he gets us yakupov
Hahahahaha he sure is.
Other than that I was thoroughly impressed with almost the whole team on the offensive side. You can really see the difference in coaching. Just like last season, it was just those subtle mistakes that costed the team. That penalty at the end was a buzzkill too.
This team has potential. Glad this was only the first game of the season.
The "stars of the game" are a sham. Milan with 2 goals should have been probably second star while Filppula (he was all over the f**king ice involved with most RW attacks) probably should have had first star.
Oh in the words of my buddy "Don" all of you people here shitting on the Sens tonight are pukes. Improvement, improvement, improvement, learning, learning, learning, and we showed a lot of that tonight and iced an exciting game.
Sens showed far more potential than I had hoped for for Game 1, and I am an eternal optimist.
go sens!
Almost all our young players showed bursts of greatness, Karlsson had an off game.
Spezza Michalek looked good together, Greening DaCosta stood out.
We get confidence we will be a force to contend with.
Really excited about the way we played most of the game, sure was a lot better to watch than last seasons losses.
Mistakes can be corrected and are no big deal, just learning.
The skill we have minus the mistakes is exciting.
GO SENS GO ... let's take the leafs back down to earth!!!
lots of possitives coming from this loss, we'll learn from our mistakes and be better next time out.
Alfie surprised me. Showed a lot of intensity.
Spezza did his usual thing. This guy is just sick when he decides to do what he does best. Just amazing to watch this guy.
Michalek looked sick. I'd like to see Butler play with a playmaker though.
Second period... Anderson could have been better.. but he was left out to dry.
1st period.. Gonchar... what the hell was that? He gave up on that Bertuzzi breakaway -- at least show effort like Cowen did.
2nd period.. the nightmare. Giveaway by Phillips & Karlsson.. count 2 more goals.
Do you really think Rundblad would have been worse tonight than Gonchar, Phillips or Karlsson?
It's funny... just before Kuba scored.. I said.. shoot stupid.. and he did and in the net.
Now in the 1st the Sens shoot on the net... it's hits ONE GUYS SKATE and bounces out... In the third... White shoots the puck through 5 or 6 players and it goes in.. Sens have NO LUCK.
Good comeback in the 3rd. To only lose by 2 goals to the skilled & elite team that Detroit is.. not too bad in my books. The guys never gave up.
PLEASE PLEASE just beat the Leafs.
I know the AHL is a "development" level, but when a team has Potulny, Aucoin, Kane, Bourque, Mink, McFlicker, Perrault, Richmond, Wellar ect...
We need help...Benoit and Smith were not replaced
But a good game nonetheless. Can't wait to see Konopka play tomorrow and help beat the scum!
Be patient guys! It was the first game and despite the mistakes they played well, and most importantly never gave up.
I admired that the most.
GO SENS GO
I know.. when I saw Gonchar give up on the play on that first goal by Bertuzzi.. I yelled at my TV. How can these so-called vets... Phillips & Gonchar... be an example for the young guys. How about an example on how NOT to play? Howard is the Wings weak link... They let him off too easy tonight... Good comeback in the 3rd though.
Oh well, maybe he'll surprise and give us 60 points...
Goaltenders: Robin Lehner, Mike McKenna
Defensemen: Mark Borowiecki, Tim Conboy, Eric Gryba, Bobby Raymond, Craig Schira, Patrick Wiercioch
Forwards: Pat Cannone, Louie Caporusso, Corey Cowick, Kaspars Daugavins, David Dziurzynski, Derek Grant, Maxime Gratchev, Wacey Hamilton, Mike Hoffman, Francis Lessard, Corey Locke, Jim O’Brien, Mark Parrish, Andre Petersson
We gave you a Calder Cup last year - don't be too greedy...just joking, but we will give you Runblad if you give us Frankie Lessard tomorrow night, just so he can beat the snot out of Colton Orr...
Kuba makes everyone here eat crow
lee gets most ice time of anyone!
lines tommorow should be:
michalek spezza greening
foligno dacosta alfie
filitov zibby butler
neil smith condra
konopka
phillips runblad
lee karlsson
kuba cowen
gonchar
Goaltenders: Robin Lehner, Mike McKenna
Defensemen: Mark Borowiecki, Tim Conboy, Eric Gryba, Bobby Raymond, Craig Schira, Patrick Wiercioch
Forwards: Pat Cannone, Louie Caporusso, Corey Cowick, Kaspars Daugavins, David Dziurzynski, Derek Grant, Maxime Gratchev, Wacey Hamilton, Mike Hoffman, Francis Lessard, Corey Locke, Jim O’Brien, Mark Parrish, Andre Petersson
They are good enough, but need tweaking. Gotta have an effective PP. There isn't even a defined 1st line. Parrish, Locke, and Hoffman? He was replace by Cowick. I know its the first game but there is a veteran aspect missing. Daugs and Obrien I think are disinterested being down here yet again. And I don't blame them.
i see your lines and raise you.
michalek spezza alfredson
foligno smith zibanejad
filatov dacosta condra
greening konopka neil
philips lee
cowen gonchar
rundblad karlsson
and mclean wil keep a keen eye and short leash to keep mistakes to a minimum.
lines 2 and 4 are heavy hitters and will protect lines 1 and 3 during line changes. leafs will not be able to cheap shot without punishment.
go sens!
Offensively, once they got it into their heads to shoot from everywhere, and go to the net, things started to happen for them. Hopefully that will continue into tomorrow nights game.
I want to see Karlsson and Cowen partnered up already, let Kuba and Gonchar go down in flames together on the 3rd pairing.
Considering the money they're getting paid, Gonch and Kuba are our two worst players. I gave up on them long ago!
Michalek-Spezza-Butler
Filatov-Da Costa-Alfie
Foligno-Zibanijad-Greening
Smith-Konopka-Neil
Phillips-Lee
Karlsson-Cowen
Gonchar-Rundblad
Spezza is "playmaker" needs "elite players to play with".."Spezza is a elite centre men"... is that what your saying really really Really lol all people do is make excuses bud ..I agree Spezza needs help possibly a kick in the ass its gut check time for jason if he wants to be Captain its time for him with his skills to start taking over games ..That includes making whoever he plays with better and burying his chances as well...so keep making excuses thats the job of ass clowns like you
did you even watch the game last night? if it weren't for spezza we would have been shut out. all offence went through him. saying he needs to do more proves you a fool, and you come off like a jealous leaf fan pouting because you don't have a number one centre.
lets trade him then to a team with 1 or 2 guys in their prime capable of finishing. (I never said elite finishers) but keep putting words into peoples mouths to try and make an inaccurate point.
Let the kids play -- I would sooner see them make mistakes than the vets. Maybe they should have kept Benoit & Derek Smith to play D.
A couple of more positives out of this game... Sens scored 2 PP goals and held Detroit to 0 in 5 PK's. To hold Detroit to no goals on the PK is pretty good in my opinion.
Baby steps... it's about improving every game. Beat those Leafs tonight...
It's his 3rd game of the season... give it a rest. Alfie was -3 last night -- Spezza was a +1.
Karlsson was the odd man out last night. We can't have those turnovers. He ain't a rookie anymore.
Seriously???? There's a reason you aren't GMs. These flip flop fans that want a trade when we get scored on and think we're heading to the playoffs when we score drive me crazy.
Anderson was a bit off this game, defense let him out to dry, and detroit's experienced offense made our rookies look foolish in our own zone. Great learning experience for our own guys on how not to lose composure like they did. Stash called a time out at the right time to get them to regroup.
Pro
9mm was awesome!!! I don't remember him playing like that ever
Costa was great with his stick, and made experienced d-men look silly
Big #2 looked solid
Bad
Gonchar's giving up on the play (looked just like kovakev).
Give aways right in front of our net
Losing composure in 2nd period.
Super excited for the next 81 games, this team will look better in 15 or so games.
Pageau has 7 pts in 4 games.
Stone has 16 pts in 6 games... that's unreal.
it was one game against an always powerhouse team in the wings. They capitalize on their opponents mistakes, that is a big part of their game.
of course we are going to have some growing pains but the Sens hung in there and I think Howard stole a few from the boys.
A couple of bad giveaways cost us yes, but the game did not play as bad as some of you are saying.
There were a lot of positives last night and if you look at the game stats, we were in it the whole way.
I still remain excited for this season. Not think we are contenders by any means but if we stay healthy, I think we surprise alot of naysayers
I would be embarassed if we played them after their back to back games every night, kind of saying you are not good enough to just play them even up.
I hope we spank them anyways.
one complaint about last night, I had a choice on center ice of watching a detroit feed ot TSN and I watched TSN so it would not be all drooling over Detroit but it was that even on TSN
