Preseason Finale in Boston

The Ottawa Senators close out their preseason tonight when they visit the Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins.

The Sens will have pretty close to a full line up for this one in what is their final tune up before the season opener next Friday in Detroit.  The Bruins are also expected to ice a strong line up so this will be a tough test for MacLean's group.

The Sens will still be without a couple of key guys as injuries remain an issue late in camp.  Peter Regin will not dress but is optimistic he can play in the opener despite injuring his shoulder on Tuesday night.

Chris Phillips also missed the skate this morning and will not be in the line up in Boston.

Here is how the Sens are expected to line up...

  • Greening-Spezza-Filatov
  • Michalek-Zibanejad-Alfredsson
  • Foligno-Smith-Butler
  • Condra-Konopka-Neil

The fact that Zibanejad lines up with Alfie and Michalek tonight is a pretty good indication he will start the regular season in that position. Da Costa was banged up in practice yesterday but did skate today with some of the extras.

Craig Anderson will start for the Senators and is scheduled to play the full game.

And again for those of you that missed it earlier. A look at Alfie in the new Heritage Jersey that will be released on Saturday.  This looks like an absolute home run for the organization.

Expect to see this jersey all over the city this season.

I know I am not the only one now who cannot take another year of puttin up with a -100 and Kuba, and I want to do Anderson a favour
I am throwing this out there...
Realistically what should management do about the huge issue of Kuba!
He has proven he can not make this lineup... he looks just as bad if not worse than last year.
we have 8 or 9 d-men that are better than him. He seems to think he is untouchable, and has been.
No tradinig is not an option, the NHL is not a place for brain dead mangagers, no one wants this useless mistake prone, 4 mil dollar nightmare. Options are:
a)cut him and buy him out (makes room for a more deserved player, and makes us beter
b)waive him (no he will not be picked up) and let him try to earn his way back, may wake him up
c)sit him in the pressbox
d)Call up Francis Lessard and tell him there is a little bonus for him if he pulls a Filotov on him :)

I hope Filatov gains the self-confidence he needs for the regular season. He's a great player but he stutters in his movements at times. Regardless you can see our talent growing every night. Zibanejad is awesome to watch. Not too flashy but, very effective with his size and stick.

Something wrong with Karlsson or is this just a night off due to this being a pre-season game?

I really like those lines. Wish we had someone a bit more "skilled" than Greening on the top line with Spezza (not saying he's not good), but that's what you get with a rebuild I guess. I was really hoping Filatov/Spezza/ Butler would build chemestry, but Butler is off to a slow start and I understand that Greening will provide some "grit" that the line was missing.

Super excited to see a "near final" linup play tonight!!! Does anyone know if its being aired or a good stream?

None of the above, we're in a rebuilding phase, Melnyk wont buy out a player in a rebuild, no point in doing that. In rebuilding they have accepted the fact that they will finish in the bottom half of the league to gather more picks.

Sens can't buy Kuba out ... it is too late. That had to be done in June.

I think they keep him here ... mostly in the press box ... send him to Bingo occasionally for conditioning stints ... while trying to trade him (which likely won't happen).

Tookie,
I get that you are on board with the "lose all year and get first pick train of thought"... an in theory there are arguments for this, but this will wear on a fan base that pays approx $200 per game night or almost 10K per year. Which begs the question, are you a season ticket holder?
I am a huge fan, and even I question why should I shell out those bones on a Jan -40 night to watch a player (or players) of Kuba's ability? Last year I really struggled to watch Kuba, Kovalev, Gonchar, Elliot, do you not agree?
Seriously, there is minor hockey in Ottawa, that have better players than Kuba. IMO

Yes I do have a season tickets and the last couple of years have been a pain but I like to see the big stars from other teams come in, you dont see them often, makes it fun.

Also by suporting the team in a rebuild is exactly what will make this team contend for the next 10-15 years. Do you remember the 10 year streak where we were an elite contending team, yeah well, the years before that were excruciating but we made it.

All I know is that I'm glad to see decisions (such as line ups) that seem to make sense and seem to look good on paper. I remember scratching my head when Clouston was coach, thinking "What the hell is going on???".

Every move Maclean makes seem to make a lot of sense and I can see the logic behind each one.

Butler on 3rd line seems a bit odd, but Smith and Foligno have been playing great, so I guess he can easily find some success there (kind of a 2a/2b line combo).

I don't know much about Filatov. Is his natural position LW? I notice we have him penciled in as RW these days and I wonder if this will hurt his game a little. I REALLY hope he starts putting points on the board as every night I watch him, I am amazed by his speed, vision, puck control...just great skills. He comes so close so often but this hasn't produced too many points yet. I'm hoping that once he pots a goal, that it will take off some pressure and he starts producing more.

one thing is for certain, Binghamton is starting the year with some really good young talent.

if they end up sending Da Costa down which they may very well do, that team is going to put up some goals...

for purely selfish entertainment, i'd like to see an opening night line up of:

spezza, filatov and 9mm
(chemistry w spezza may be better when healthy)

dacosta, alfie and zibby
(put the ole willy vet with the kids)

not likely obviously, but i think it would make things exciting...

How about Rundblad with Lee... at least he would have a fighting chance to have a decent game.

ok so I am seeing a trend here
Rundblad with Kuba, Gonchar, Karlsson = disaster!
or any combination of those four is trouble
something tells me the kid needs to go to bingo to learn some defense, and as good as Karlsson is, he needs to know he has responsibilites in his own end.
No hope for Kuba or Gonchar at this point.

i think two other great examples are philly and boston.

two teams using high end assets to re-stock their cupboards with talented youth while keeping a nucleas of talent together.

It's not just about keeping your high end players together. A big piece is getting enough high end players to start with that you can manage those assets in order to have a steady stream of replacements as necessary.

Zibanejad being between Michalek and Alfie in no way says he stays. Regin and Da Costa, the people he's competing with, are hurt so hes there by default. He's been opportunistic this preseason, but in my opinion he's not NHL ready. He's proven he's got the skills to be a star down the road but I feel he's still too raw to be in the NHL at 18.

Not sure if you're being serious or sarcastic Sandy. As far as I can tell, Kuba couldn't do any better if he was paired with Drew Doughty...

I say Rundblad with Phillips. Experience with inexperience. Offensive minded player with defensive minded player.

Lee/Gonchar can play with Cowen and Karlsson can play with Kuba.

All of this is IF Rundblad makes the team. Until someone volunteers to lock Kuba up in the trunk of an abandoned Caprice Classic, I'm pretty sure Rundblad will start the season in Bingo or Sweden.

They've got crashers, defensive responsibility, and skill balanced on the top 3 lines. I'd like to see Konopka sit and have Da Costa centre the 3rd line with Smith between Condra and Neil.

Watch my channel for a stream tonight

Nothing is guaranteed, but if the guys on the official Senators website and twitter are right and Bell's center ice shows the game, I will definitely stream it. I will update on the broadcast situation later, but for now the game doesn't show on my programming guide.

To the guy that said "Wow, some people need to brush up on player positions before posting lineups"

Filatov is a right-handed shot. Foligno, Michalek are left. Right-handed shot usually means RW, except some players prefer playing on the off-wing because it allows them better shooting opportunities. That being said, defensively, and playmaking wise, playing your natural wing is usually more efficient.

Filatov could easily play the RW, and Foligno the LW.

[quote name="Mat"]Man... Some of you need to brush up on your player positions before posting lineups...

Filatov, Foligno and Michalek are LW
Alfredsson, Butler and Neil are RW

And I'm going to re-affirm that putting Gonchar and Rundblad on the same defensive pairing is recipe for disaster... Turnover galore.

Do you think Rundblad would do better with Kuba?

Not sure if you're being serious or sarcastic Sandy. As far as I can tell, Kuba couldn't do any better if he was paired with Drew Doughty...

I was serious. You mentioned Rundblad would be a disaster with Gonchar... I say it will be worse with Kuba. We will see that tonight.

Boston is icing their top forwards (other than Seguin). What do you think Kuba/Rundblad will do against their 2nd line. Rundblad is learning a little more every game.. but he still has a long way to go. Kuba... well.. you know.

Due to the Red Sox abrupt demise NESN, the Boston regional sports network, has decided to now broadcast our game tonight. That means there is a feed that will be carried on Centre Ice (the package) on most carriers including Bell Expressvu and Rogers Cable customers. Normally, you would need to subscribe to the Centre Ice package to view the game but Centre Ice is offering a free preview this week so the game is available on Bell on the Centre Ice Preview Channel and Rogers on Channel 456 and 487.

This will be the best game to watch to see who will be in a SENS uni on opening night. I want to Filatov do his thing and especially get chemistry with Spezz and Butts.

I will be interesting to watch guys like Cowen and Runblad vs the cup champs. This is the best lineup they will face.

Zibby's made the team for now (9games) at least. The more time he spends next Alfie is good for him.

Can't count on these types of win every night, but its good to see that the Sens can elevate their game ine the 3rd.

Now, I littered the message board today with how Gonchar and Rundblad shouldn't be a pairing. This doesn't reflect on their skills individually (relax Round Leaf). But together, there's no disputing they are a liability. No, check that, A MAJOR LIABILITY.

If this game didn't prove me right, than Paul McLean's moustache is fake.

Not an attack at you... just pissed at some of the critics who are all over him for the little mistakes that EVERY player makes when they step into the NHL, but fail to notice that he is an absolute wizard with the puck.

I 100% agree though; Gonchar is a defensive liability as will be Rundblad for at least next season... they shouldn't be together. I did like Rundblad with Lee.

Outshot 40 - 20, we should have been "toast" said Tookie,
but Craig Anderson stole this game, all by his "standing on his head" performance.

Rundblad showed patience, confidence, and timing in scoring the winner.

We are slowly rebuilding, one small step at a time!

I feel the opposite way. Gponchar's not getting any better. He'll only get worse until he retires.

Same with Kuba, although even LESS people felt he would bounce back this year.

Such a shame, especially for a player of Gonchar's caliber.
