This was an important game for Zibanejad and he did not disappoint. The kid was solid at both ends of the ice and showed some impressive flashes of skill, particularly on his goal early in the third.
One thing that is looking more and more certain with each game is that Jared Cowen is going to make this hockey team. He was a physical force all night and made life extremely difficult on the Jets forwards.
David Rundblad also had a strong outing and seemed to get better as the game moved along. I'm not scout but it seems like the biggest thing for Rundblad is confidence. He needs to trust his skill level because when he does, he is on another level. The poise he showed with the puck in the third period was phenomenal.
A couple of veterans left the game with minor injuries. Chris Phillips felt tightness in his back while Auld was dealing with cramping in his legs. The team is expected to announce some cuts when they return to Ottawa.
Hats of to Conception Bay South and St. John's for doing such a fantastic job of hosting this event. Really cool to have the Senators take part in this event this year and hopefully they can do more of the same in the future.
Sens are right back at it tomorrow night when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second last game of the preseason.
That 3rd period was intense. Nice to see some emotion after the vanilla first 2 periods.
I think Cowen is the guy to stay up at this point. KUBA Carkner Karlson, Rundlad, Phillips....alo t of minuses on the statsheet.
I think Runblad is making a case too. I can't recall a year where Ottawa had so many prospects to get excited about as they do now.
They are showing a lot of poise, I say let them make their mistakes and learn in the NHL, the pressure isn't on them and the team, as someone mentioned earlier this summer.
This line up could make some noise and surprise alot of so called experts.

Were having so much trouble scoring and when we do its ugly as hell, I think people are gonna get a huge slap in the face when they expect us to score 3 goals a game or watch entertaining hockey. In our 5 pre-season games, maybe 1 was entertaining. A slew of mistakes and bad plays, lack of scoring, shaky defensive play.
Oh well, since were in the rebuild, another 8-12 draft choices wouldnt hurt again, especially if we land Yakupov!!!
Exactly... completely agree.
Sorry -- Condra makes this team -- so does Greening.
If you get NYR & Philly game.. going be a rough one.. At least it's starting that way.
Tookie, you do realize a lot of prospects play in those pre-season games. The Sens are 2-2-1 in the pre-season.. I think a better record than the Habs.
I don't expect the playoffs.. but until they make more cuts down to a more set lineup.. we don't know what they will do.
Yeah, like this game is a good indication of our final line up and what we should expect to see.
You are dismissed.
Greening is bigger/tougher and more versatile than Condra.
Sorry, Condra is 1st injury call up.
He is not a better player than Greening
Hello pressbox.
1. Greening and Condra will be on the team.
2. Both Cowen and Runblad can't be on the big squad.
3. Same goes for MZ and DaCosta
4. Runblad should start in the AHL and then should be the first call up when there is room.
If Im Ottawa, I give MZ a 9 game look and go from there. DaCosta should be playing as well, meaning someone has to go....but I think he starts in the AHL as well. MZ has to be on center I think...
I try to move Kuba, but you need to bring back a forward likely for his contract...and to stay above the floor. Then I would likely waive Winchester and go from there. Bottom line is, there isn't enough room for everyone...Im curious to see how this pans out...
One player that is rarely mentionned but I feel really stepped it up tonight is Mike Hoffman. He has a lot of skill but I feel lacks confidence. After Maclean gave him more ice time with Alfie and Zib in the third, there was an obvious chemistry that developped between the players, and the real more confident Hoffman came out. He could really help the senators powerplay; and he will someday. His hockey IQ is very high, which is a great asset to his smooth skating and soft hands. If it weren’t for a log jam at the center position, this kid would be play come the season opener. Who knows, if he keeps it up, he just might; ridiculous prediction!
- Doesnt play defence
-Doesnt check
-Doesnt score
-Slow
- Lacks effort
Cant have a guy playing top line mins that is a huge Liability!!!!
what I don't understand is why did Murray sign Condra, Butler and Greening to one-way contracts?? He really got caught up in the rebuild process - I just don't see a place for all three of them to make this team this year. JMO
it should also be said that they can play upto 9 games and still get sent down.from what it sounds like the contracts were to keep them and that they will most likely start the season in bingo.
Sorry -- how can he improve in Sweden when he was the best defensemen in the SEL last season.
His problem right now is with the smaller ice and speed and physicality of the NHL game... he will not learn that in Sweden.
It appears some of you did not watch the game last Friday night between Mtl & Ottawa (loss though) == Condra was one of the better players on the ice. I guess you also forgot how well he played down the stretch last season.. oh yeah... I forgot == it meant nothing.
As for Tookie calling the Sens goals ugly.. I guess he did not see Z-bad's goal today.
Did you guys not watch them play last year? Have you forgotten already?
Cowen has shown that he can be dominant in this league...finall y. He is a legit contender for rookie of the year.
Rundblad is an unbeleivable talent. The trade to get him might end up being one of the best in franchise history. He was dancing around in the offensive zone tonight on multiple occasions while always creating scoring chances. It looked like his youtube videos all over again. I agree with chirp that he just needs confidence. Once he makes one nice play in a game he realizes he can do it and then goes off. His spin o rama's that he does reminds me so much of Doughty. I honestly believe he will dominate the game some day just like Doughty does now.
Zibanejad is also an unreal talent. His speed and acceletion can match up with the best in the world. He simply has to get used to the smaller ice. He's not used to having someone's stick on him that fast. Once he does he'll be a dominant power forward.
Phillips
Gonchar

Rundblad
Cowen
Kuba
Sorry Carks ...still guaranteed money. Even though you have great dedication, your trade value is higher than Kuba's. Either that, or sit in bingo until kuba gets traded.
Lehner looks like a real solid goalie for the future. Big, athletic, and competetive is what stands out with him. He is definetly good enough to play back up this year but it is good for him to play 50plus games on a real good Bingo team. It just sucks for him because he essentially has no shot at making the team. To be honest I hope Anderson gets injured for the year and Lehner plays so well the team would be forced to play him
Phillips Gonchar
Lee Karlsson
Cowen Carkner
Kuba will be waived and if not claimed will be an extra scratched D man in case of injuries. He simply is not a good enough skater anymore after his surgery. I wish we could trade him for a pick but that doesn't seem to be likely.
Rundblad will start the season playing in Bingo but I believe will be in the nhl before the 20game mark
As for the 2nd line centre position...
The way the roster is now I think it will be Regins job to loose. And I don't think he has yet. He's looked like a solid pro out there. However...Ziban ejad will get his 9 games to start and if he can show that he is improving on a regular basis until then he might force Murray to make a trade. Because I don't see Regin playing 3rd line. I think that's Winchester's job. Next year I'd like to see DaCosta rip it up and play 2nd line centre and have Zibanejad be our elite 3rd line centre like Staal in Pit.
One-way does not mean they have to pass through waivers. Mark Parrish is on a two-way, but will still have to pass through waivers to go to the AHL. One-way simply means they're paid the same in the AHL as they are the NHL. So, all 3 of those guys are waiver-exempt (it has to do with NHL games player/number of years in NHL, not one-way/two-way contract).
I've been keeping an eye on Kyle Turris all off season and he still hasn't signed with Pheonix. Do you know why not? Nobody seems to be talking about it. Personally I think its a pretty big story.
I was thinking of him being good for our second line cntre spot. I look at him kind of like Filatov...extre mely highly touted skilled propects that just didn't work out with their old teams and all they need is a fresh start with solid top 6 players/veteran s which we have.
Any chance of trading for him?
hope to see more of it.
also zibanejad should be on the wing until he works with spezza on faceoffs. he's winning 1 in 10 and seems to be his only downside. he'll get much better just practicing and being in ottawa. we can surprise alot of teams this year.
go sens go!
I agree Zibanejad would be great on the wing he reminds me of JVR ..
He makes bad decisions and is invisible if he isn't surrounded by great players. I would vouch for Zibby instead of Butler. Zibby has better stats, better defensive play and as it seems, more determination and hustle.
Hopefully things change in the regular season as Butler will for sure start on the first line with Spezza.
Filatov Speeza Alfredsson
Folingo Zibanejad Michalek

Oh and ditto everyone's comments about Butler. He's been the worst Senator in the pre-season other than Wiercoch who has been a train wreck out there. Hopefully he's just waiting for the real games to start because he feels more secure about having an NHL job. He's been flat out lousy in all of the games so far. Defensively porous and not scoring. Eastwood warned of this last year. He scored a lot during garbage time but he has to score or he's a liability out there.
Really neither one can play in their own zone so it really is a comparison of offensive skills
a/ Runblad going back to Sweden is the worst scenario for the Sens
b/ They can't waive Kuba, they need his cap hit to stay above the floor (lucky him LOL)
c/ Its Pre-season; relax. All you coming down on Butler, Greening etc need to relax. Talk like this after 25 games...
d/ Winchester won't be a third line centre.
haha how many times did we hear "talk like this after 25/30/35/42 games" last year....there were a few last season who didn't have to wait until we were at the mid point to realise how bad we were.
You truly are the king of kings.
Sens fan stuck north of TO, there have 2 seperate reports around here about a Spezza for Bozak and Gunnersson trade, if that happens i'd be really angry! Anyone here anything about this? another BS E5 rumour or what? I'm still surprised so many people are picking Ottawa to finsh last in East, with good goaltending can we really be that bad?
For some trash talking, the Toronto Media love to talk about Spezza trade, and getting under the skin of Ottawa fans !
GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!
Rockin Robert
"Mika Zibanejad continued his impressive NHL debut... He was the best Ottawa player on the ice". This is completely inaccurate, although he played better in the third, and scored a very nice goal, he was in no way, shape, or form, the best Senator on the ice. He looked sluggish most of the game. Then he goes on to state: “Jared Cowen and David Rundblad went head-to-head again on Monday night... and Cowen again came away the winner". Once again, this is false, and in the third Runblad made a great case as to why the organization should keep him; he looked much better than Cowen.
Anyway, this is not a knock against the kids, just against Allen Panzeri; who should actually watch a hockey game before writing about it!
Cowen makes the team
Rundblad starts the season in the AHL
Regin is our 2nd line center
Da Costa is our 3rd line center forming a line of college kids
Zibinejad goes back to Sweden for another season (love what I've seen, but he needs consistency).
LOL! That would never happen....Bozak is freaking useless and Gunnersson straight up for Spezza would be the worst trade the Sens ever made. Spezza is going to be the next captain of this team, don't expect him to go anywhere...
Spezza for Bozak & Gunnersson....h ahaha....Only in Toronto could they make up something more ridiculous than an Eklund rumor...
Holy shit that is terrible! The only highly appealing players they have are Kessel and Schenn. Kessel they would never be moved at this point and Schenn.. well, we sure as hell don't need more defencemen. Further more I wouldn't even trade straight up for either one of those players, maybe both if it wasn't a trade with the Leafs.
Exactly. Maybe the Sens will be challenged to score goals, but these line-ups do not tell the tale, and should not. This is the time evaluate and experiment, not coach to win. Maclean is also getting to know new players in the organization in depth. I would be p'o'ed if he ran a line-up to win at all costs now. I watch pre-season games to see how the players are making out - ability of new players, progression of older prospects, rehab of players like Alfie coming off a surgery.
Way to early to make Ottawa Citizen proclamations on scoring punch after the first pre-season game, like they did.
Cowen - Was a monster out there. I really like what I see of him jumping up on the play. Sending him back last year really helped his offensive game. The only thing I can say he could work on is his pivots; he looks like some players can get around him when his back is to the play.
Runblad - Had a great third period; just like most of the team. This guy is going to be really good for us but is he ready? Not just yet. I do hope he sticks in the AHL because it can only help him.
Ya, there is no way we can move Kuba.
Cowen makes the team, without question. There is no room for Rundblad unless Carkner is put on waivers. Rundblad should be in Bingo until there is a need for a callup.
I really don't know what is in the air in Toronto if they would ever think that would be even close to Spezza's value.
#1 -- Spezza is going nowhere
#2 -- If he was traded... we could guarantee it would not be to a hated division rival.
#3 -- the only way he gets to Toronto is if he signs as a UFA.
its always bs. stop looking at fake twitter accounts.
And yes...It is a fake account. Thanks for the heads-up!
Regulars here know how much I disagree with Tookie... but (trust me this hurts) much of what he says here is true. We really struggle to gain, or maintain offensive pressure. Outside from our number one line, there really is not any one offensive standout.
So far:
Spezza, Michalek, Alfie, are the only ones that have clearly stood out as offensive threats.
But forget Yakupov, we will still challenge for a playoff spot.
I really don't care if we land in the bottom 5, or even the bottom of the heap. I said a few years back that I would rather watch my kids hockey over a heartless display by professionals. I am glad to say that won't be the case this year! Yes...I do still enjoy watching my son play...
Actually it is, most teams season rosters dont resemble their pre-season roster one bit, ours does, players like Greening, Condra, Zibanejad*, Smith, Neil, Konopka, Filatov are all going to play for us in Reg season...
So yeah it does look bad and I stand by my assessment that we wont be scoring anywhere close to 3 goals per game.
Cowen is way further ahead than Rundblad. Rundblad seems to be at the level Karlsson was in his first year, he needs to learn the NA ice size, and not play so scared.
Cowen has been the most impressive player overall in my opinion. Very physical, strong, and composed with the puck.
And as much as I love Karlsson's offensvie capabilities, he is still extremely week in our own end, and it seems that Rundblad is following in that same direction. We must break those bad habits now.
As for the forwards, Da Costa, has been very impressive, he will make the team.
Condra is extremely smart and dependable, and yes a lot like Kelly.
Butler has been disappointing, it seems that he used his speed much better last year.
MZ will be good, but one more year in SEL will help mature him.
And although I do remember Greening from last year, he has not shown any of that yet, whereas Smith has moved ahead of him on my depth chart. JMO
Well put, at least we know these kids will give their all, every game, which is a lot better than most nights last year
http://twitter.com/SunGarrioch - Craig Anderson has some maintanence issues which is why he isn't playing.
http://twitter.com/SunGarrioch - Anderson will play Thursday if he's OK.
Maybe the occasional nice goal or blowout victory but there wont be much of it. Just trying to lower peoples expectations. Some people are going to be very dissapointed, just saying.
Nice to see Lehner get the whole game, expect the Leafs to win but Lehner will give us a chance!
You do realize this is pre-season and we have not dressed our actual lineup yet right. We'll be fine, it's too bad you feel like every negative occurrence in meaningless games is a prediction of things to come. Or even worse that you need to lower our expectations because of it. Cheer up already and find some sunshine in your sporting life.
Zibanejad-Spezza-Butler
Michalek-Da Cosata-Alfie
Regin-Foligno-Condra
Filatov-Smith-Neil

Cowen-Karlsson
Phillips-Lee
Rundblad-Gonchar
Carkner
Roll 4 lines and Filatov gets first promotion when someone else hits inconsistency or injury.
why in the world would you put Filatov on the 4th line, seems like such a waste. Filatov will play top 6 minutes or not play at all.
I also think Zibby isn't ready for the 2nd line center spot, but don't give up on it so easily.
Jabs your saying we havent dressed our actual lineup??
Dont know about you but all of the above will make the team and have dressed together in pre-season...
Spezza, Alfie, Michalek, Filatov, Foligno, Regin, Butler, Greening, Condra, Smith, Neil, Konopka, Da Costa.
And of all the names the last few are the ones that actually showed up.
So I dont know where you get you "we havent dressed our actual lineup yet"
Its gonna be a mixture of the players I just mentioned, which have problems scoring goals.
I like your line of thinking, but Wow Filatov on the 4th line... you know that will bring on the whining, right?
Also, I love that you have Kuba down to Elmira:) but do you really think that Rundblad has earned his spot, ahead of say Gyrba, who has impressed?
Tell me where you'd put him then? I put him there because he can make things happen for any type of line and because you'd have to put someone else down there if not him. It's not permanent, but gives you more time with Da Costa and Zibanejad.
I must have missed which game they all played together. Please let me know which game that was. They haven't!
Spezza, Filatov, Alfie, Butler, Da Costa, Zibanejad and Michalek who are all scorers and/or playmakers will have trouble scoring goals? I'm sure some games it will happen but not for a full season.
Filatov on the 4th will bring tons of whining, I know. And it's not based on his performance, just on the fact that no other top 6 player could make lemonade from that line, whereas I think he could. He played well the other night with grinders for a bit. I thing putting one of the other top 6 would bring more whining though, but the whiners don't think about who they'd prefer there instead or the fact I'm insistent on rolling 4 lines, which makes a huge difference. It's also not permanent, just gives the coach an extra 9 games to judge Zibanejad, Da Costa and Regin better.
Filatov is a playmaker, not a sniper. Instead of complaining about what I put up, tell me your alternative. How would you fit Zibanejad and Da Costa on the team?
Hehe, I dont like Filatov but even I wouldnt start him on the 4th line, hell, thats like failing him right away...
And that line up scares me, it would be decent if all the kids had 3-4 years of NHL play on their belt, but they dont.
Zibby is not 1st line material just yet, you can see he's not all that comfortable when he has the puck, always shooting on net from the blue line instead of carrying it in or dumping & chasing.
Da Costa is not strong enough to play the type of puck possession that he likes vs regular NHL'ers. He's gonna get eaten up.
We have very different reviews of Da Costa then. And as I said, it's for 9 games not the whole season. Filatov will get a chance with every scorer at some point this year, no need to freak out off the bat.
For someone that says this is a rebuild year with no playoffs, why wouldn't you want these kids learning the NHL way then right away?
I wouldnt, they are not rdy.
Filatov Spezza Butler
Michalek Regin/Foligno Alfie
Greening Smith Condra
Regin/Foligno Konopka Neil
Your defensive line up I have no problems with, bit soft but its all we got.
Cowen-Karlsson
Phillips-Lee
Rundblad-Gonchar
Carkner
Well if we picked up Filitov as a playmaker then who exactly is he supposed to be feeding on the 4th line? Neil? I'm pretty sure we picked him up to put up a few goals for us. In order for this kid to produce and play well he's going to have to be given something he wasn't given in Columbus, which is a chance to play top 6 minutes.
Zibanejad will play 9 games and go back to SEL, the only way I could see him staying is if he's at or very close to a PPG which is unlikely. DaCosta will be sent down to Bingo. I think they are most likely going to give Regin a chance as the 2nd line center, and Smith will fill in as 3rd line center, Konopka 4th. DaCosta will get the call up when one of them gets injured (or Spezza).
That's how I think it will play out up the middle...
My lineup.....And if Butler doesnt start playing switch him with Condra
Nikita Filatov -Jason Spezza-Daniel Alfredsson
Nick Folingo -Mika Zibanejad -Milan Michalek
Colin Greening -Peter Regin-Bobby Butler
Zack Smith-Zenon Konopka -Chris Neil
DEFENSEMEN
Sergei Gonchar -Jared Cowen
Erik Karlsson -Filip Kuba
Chris Phillips- David Rundblad
Brian Lee
GOALTENDERS
Craig Anderson
Alex Auld
Oooohhh I didnt see you had them playing for only 9 games, if so, then yes I agree, neither Zib or Da Costa will play more than 9 games this year, no matter how well they do. Zibanejad is headed back to Sweden and Da Costa in the AHL.
I wouldnt, they are not rdy.
Filatov Spezza Butler
Michalek Regin/Foligno Alfie
Greening Smith Condra
Regin/Foligno Konopka Neil
Your defensive line up I ahve no problem with, bit soft but its all we got.
Cowen-Karlsson
Phillips-Lee
Rundblad-Gonchar
Carkner
Why would Regin/Foligno on the 4th line be fine? And a 1st line with Spezza as the grinder? This Filatov-Spezza- Butler line is not realistic at all, just too small.
Regin or Foligno for 2nd line C?
F: Michalek, Alfredsson, Regin, Greening, Smith, Butler, Spezza, Filatov, Condra, Daugavins, Da Costa, Neil, Konopka, Hoffman, Foligno, Zibanejad (Winchester)
Goalies: Auld, Anderson...D: Phillips, Karlsson, Gonchar, Kuba, Carkner, Lee, Cowen, Runblad, Wiercioch, Borowiecki
So while Zibanejad is here and Regin plays 2nd line C where is Filatov and where is Zibanejad playing? As I said, that was a 9 game lineup.
Exactly, it's a tryout lineup, not a full year thing. Whoever is best between the 2 stays, the other returns to Bingo or SEL and then Filatov is back where he should be.
If we're going based on the business side though, there's really no room for anyone other than Cowen and as you said 1 of Foligno/Regin gets 2nd line C.
I don't know why it's so hard to discuss situational lineups here without people jumping all over it. Not 1 suggested lineup is liked by all and in the end there will be fans surprised with a top 6 player who ends up on 3rd or 4th line. With the numbers we have, it's going to happen.
Michalek plays LW not RW and Rundblad and Phillips play the same side.
Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Michalek-Regin-Alfredsson
Greening-Da Costa-Condra
Smith-Konopka-Neil
Plug Foligno in for injuries or players that aren't producing until he is traded.
Regin is so far behind Foligno got ahead of him as a C. I highly doubt Da Costa will be kept in the NHL to play on the 3rd line.
I wouldnt, they are not rdy.
Filatov Spezza Butler
Michalek Regin/Foligno Alfie
Greening Smith Condra
Regin/Foligno Konopka Neil
Your defensive line up I have no problems with, bit soft but its all we got.
Cowen-Karlsson
Phillips-Lee
Rundblad-Gonchar
Carkner
This is the lineup I predict we'll see. Or at least I'm hoping for. May not score a ton of goals, but I think it's the way this team should look going forward.
I'm not a fan of Mac switching up lines often like he says he will. Let them build chemistry
Greening-Spezza-Filatov
Foligno-Regin-Condra
Hoffman-Zibanejad-Butler
Daugavins-Smith-Neil.
Gonchar-Borowiecki
Cowen-Karlsson
Rundblad-Lee
Lehner
Kulimen - Grabovski - Macarthur
Lupul - Kadri - Kessel
Frattin - Boyce - Armstrong
Rosehill - Dupuis - Crabb/Orr
Liles-Schenn
Gunnarsson-Phaneuf
Aulie-Franson
Goalie: Reimer.
You'd move a 1st round player who's still growing and has had some of the best shifts out of anyone this preseason for a 2nd round pick? I don't know what your Regin attachment is, but I cannot agree at all with this.
I like the D pairings, should be interesting, as well as the 1st line with Spezza.
"Michalek plays LW not RW... and Rundblad and Phillips play the same side."
-Actually Michalek is a RW playing LW..
-Phillips and Runblad played together in the pre season with Rundblad on the right and Philly on the left
If he's playing LW for more than 1 year does that not become his position? I'm not saying he can't play both sides, but out of what I've seen he looks a lot better on the left.
As for Rundblad, I'm sure they've tried it, just like they tried Karlsson-Goncha r last year. It's a lot harder to convert a rookie's position while also teaching him everything else for the NHL, imo.
Alfredsson, Spezza, Michalek, Filatov, Butler, Regin, Foligno, Zibanejad
Tim Conboy (OTT)
Francis Lessard (OTT)
Corey Locke (OTT)
NO I'm pretty sure it doesnt matter if its been a year if he is a RW that also can play LW Id rather see him play his nature position ..He has asked too go back to RW but its a wait and see .. thats why id like to see Folingo Zibby MM9 -Line
Well they played together last night and didnt look bad at all Philly is a stay at home Rundblad is risk taker there perfect for each other .
I liked having Locke in the system, but I guess they're trying to make room for future NHL players, not career AHLers.
I must have missed his RW request. That line would be interesting too.
Disagree Zibby back to SEL, Da Costa plays out the season
Conboy and Lessard were both goons, not really needed.....
Its gonna be a mixture of the players I just mentioned, which have problems scoring goals.[/quote)
Tookie -- I don't believe all of those players have been in the lineup at the same time. Same goes for the defense.
Lot of rookies mixed with the veterans.
Sens are now 2-2-1 in pre-season -- not that bad.
Why don't we wait until the end of Oct before we say mostly only Alfie, Spezza & Michalek will score. Give some of these kids a chance.. after all it is a re-build...
I just want these guys to compete and let the other team know they were in a hockey game.
See Toronto is icing almost all of their regular season roster. Let's hope the Sens can hold him. Lehner has to have a better game than the 1st one against the Leafs.
Keep your heads up when Phaneuf is on the ice.
