Five Games to Look Forward to in 2011/2012

Alright, I know the NHL regular season is still more than two months away but I already find myself looking forward to the upcoming season.  With a new coach and a number of young players poised to make the jump, it's an exciting time to be a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

With that in mind, here are the Top 5 games to look forward to on the 2011/2012 schedule.

#5- Ottawa Senators @ Winnipeg Jets- Tuesday, November 29, 2011

The Jets are back and on this Tuesday in late November the Sens make their first visit to Manitoba.  Sure they may just be the Thrashers in disguise but I can't wait to see the response from the fans in the city of Winnipeg.  The old Jets logo is a classic and while there is still no confirmation on what they'll wear next season, it will be nice to have another Canadian team in the mix next season.

#4- Ottawa Senators @ Detroit Red Wings- Friday, October 7, 2011

Looking ahead to this day I can already picture just how long the work day is going to seem.  The Ottawa Senators open their season in the Motor City against perennial contenders in the Red Wings.  A season opening game on a Friday night is just about as good as it gets.  This game will also feature new Sens bench boss Paul MacLean making his return to Detroit.

#3- Edmonton Oilers @ Ottawa Senators- February 11, 2012

For the second time on the season, the Sens take on the young Edmonton Oilers, this time on Hockey Day in Canada. This is always one of my favourite days on the NHL schedule and  the Sens get to host a game on what is always a great day for the game.  Add in the intrigue of a couple of young, rebuilding hockey clubs and this figures to be one of the best days on the schedule.

#2- Minnesota Wild @ Ottawa Senators- Tuesday, October 11, 2011

When the schedule was first released, this looked like a bit of a dud for a home opener.  Aside from the Calder Cup rematch angle, there wasn't a ton of intrigue to go along with a visit from the Wild.  That was until Dany Heatley was traded to the Wild in an off-season shocker.  Suddenly the Sens get to play their home opener against Heatley and his new mates.  The home opener is always fun but when you add in the Heatley Hate it should certainly make for a wild night at SBP.

#1- The NHL All Star Game- Sunday, January 29, 2012

It may not be on the Sens schedule but this year's NHL All Star game will be played in Ottawa and is without a doubt, one of the most anticipated dates on the schedule.  The game itself has taken a lot of heat over the years but this is still a fantastic opportunity for the city and the organization.  The festivities begin on the Thursday of that week which means that for those four days, Ottawa will be the centre of the hockey world.  Health permitting, you would have to think Daniel Alfredsson will be the Captain of one of the teams at the event.  It should make for an awesome few days for Sens fans.

The full schedule can be found here.  Which games are you looking forward to?

Long-time Senator Patrick Lalime has announced his retirement from the NHL.

Lalime was a good goalie here in Ottawa for a long time and gave the team stability in net. Many fans remember one bad playoff outing but the reality is Lalime was a reliable goaltender, both in the regular season and playoffs.

Lalime notched 21 playoff victories in Ottawa, including five shutouts. He posted an impressive 1.77 GAA and a .926 save percentage.  Lalime is expected to take on a role with RDS during Sens telecasts next season.

Good list, but I think the first game vs. the Jets in Ottawa in October should be up there as well.

Yep I had that in there but changed it for the first game in Winnipeg instead. Didn't want all the games to be in the first month!

Looking forward to both of those though.

I know it goes without saying, but I can't wait till the next time we play the laffs, win or lose, its always bragging rights and usually a bit chippy. So every time Toronto is on the Calendar it's always a good chance to renew the rivalry that once was.

No list is complete without a matchup with the leafs. I would have included that 1st pre-season game in my top 5 just because it's the start of a new season and our rebuilt roster, the end of a really f'n long offseason and it's the Leafs, the most hated rivals we have.

Out of the 5 you listed I'd take out the home opener, just cause I'm tired of Heatley to the point where I don't even care when or if he comes to town anymore ... it's not like the Sens are going to run him down or anything, unfortunately.

Ok SC, why even add the Alfie thing?

That is one reason why the NHL All-Star game has faded so much, first of all, most All-Stars and I use that term loosely dont even go and second of all the game is boring as hell.

Why would Aflie be captain of a team? Unless he DESERVES to be there, he shouldnt, Lidstrom and Staal both dserved to be there.

It shouldnt be about Ottawa but about the NHL's best talent. (Now if that happens to be some of the Sens, great if not, oh well)

Does anyone remember the last time Heatley came to town, eyah, complete blowout by the Sharks. Our boys didnt even show up.

Its not like the Sens get any more pumped up when playing vs Heatley than playing the vs Blue Jackets. This time the team they are playing might be a little less prolific, so we have a better chance of winning...unles s Heatley explodes for 3 goals!

I think the allstar draft last year was kind of fun. But the game was just flat out boring. I wish there was something they were playing for or a NA vs World, just something the players can be a bit more passionate about. As much as they try to promote it as appreciation to the fans. The even is more important to the players by far and I'm ok with that.

for me its Feb 15th and March 4th lol

seriously I think the wild game is the one I would like to see our young guys take it to them, the old farts sure did not to the Sharks. I hope we see more passion from our players than that night.

as far as the leafs I know I am in the minority but I don't even consider them worthy of much consideration other than to consider them a pathetic organization.
We have to play the goons but certainly not a hockey game I look forward to see, I guess we get to see Konopka Neil Carkner get some action.
I like watching teams that actualy have some skill and rank above just being a pain in the ass to play.
Redwings would be interesting and so would oilers, young guys against young guys. (oilers)

I hate their fans...the drunken in your face braggards.. who think they are better than anyone else. It's not a comfortable experience being at a game among those guys...unless the Sens are beating them down which has not happened much in the last several years.

You know what i honestly hate? sorry a little off topic but all of the people on the HFboards think the sens will finish dead last AND that rundblad doesnt even come close to schenn. Clearly Rundblads achievements over schenn's achievments are uncomparable, schenn is playing against kids and rundblad is playing against men and broke records. Our lines heading into next season

Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Michalek-Foligno-Alfie
Greening-Regin-Condra
Smith-Konopka/Winchester-Neil

Phillips/Cowen
Rundblad/Karlsson
Lee/Gonchar
I don't see how that finishes dead last in the season and hell we could possibly make the playoffs.

How bout Regin being #12 on this list of Takeaway leaders.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=372128

Scott Cullen looks at the numbers and comes up with the leaders and trailers in takeaways per 60 minutes of even strength play last season in the NHL.

Karlsson #5 among top defensemen and Lee is #209 among bottom defensemen.

Even though you should take it all with a grain of salt, its something fun to look at anyways.

Foligno is not an NHL centre. He is not strong on his feet. He leads the NHL in falling down. Yes he hustles and tries hard but results are what counts. This will be a very important year for Foligno in my view. He must rise to the top or he will move on.

If MacLean brings the Detroit mentality to his coaching style in Ottawa, then you know he won't put up with dumb penalties. Detroit has always been ultra-disciplin ed, so I would think guys like Zach Smith, who tend to take some needless penalties will be given a very short leash. I do, however, think Smith will be a good player for us this year.

Ever heard the saying "You cant teach an old dog new tricks"

Neil, Konopka and Smith in some ways, only play one way and that is edgy, in fact Im pretty sure were gonna be top 5 in penalty minutes, we kinda went in that direction when we signed Konopka.

Konopka 307 PIMS
Neil 210 PIMS
Carkner 136 PIMS
Smith 120 PIMS

And for the person who said Leafs are a bunch of goons, they only have 1 player (Orr) in the top 50!!!! While we have 4 in the top 35 alone!! HAHA

I know most of you will say, but MacLean will have a short leash, or whatever excuse you have. Those 4 guys will get PIMS no matter who is the coach, especially with a rookie coach.

Maybe you're right - we'll see. I wasn't neccessarily talking about cutting back on PIM's in general, just the dumb ones that Smith was inclined to take last year. Neil, Carkner, and Konopka are all fighters so they will get alot of PIM's no matter what. Smith has to cut down on minors, in my opinion, anyway.

I have no problem at all with our 4th line being a bunch of "Goons". But the fact is that they're more than just enforcers, they all have an attribute or two of offensive flare. Yes that line will be somewhat undisciplined, but with 4th line minutes, you better believe they will all want to get another shift. Taking away shifts from the 4th line is easy. Neil, Smith and Konopka are no Avery or Cooke. They don't have a reputation of being dirty, just hitting hard and playing hard. If that's a problem, I want more problems.
