Is Lalime an Option?

With the opening of NHL Free Agency now just a couple days away, teams around the NHL are getting set to open their wallets for what can best be described as a below average free agent class.  Brad Richards is obviously the big prize this time around and looks posied to cash in this summer.

For the Senators though, it appears as though the club will keep a relatively low profile when free agency opens on Canada Day at Noon.

For Bryan Murray, it appears as though the only "must address" area is in goal.  The club has Craig Anderson penciled in for 60+ games next season so Ottawa will be looking for a capable back up that can play between 15-20 games and give the team some solid minutes.

There are a handful of guys that will hit the market in a couple days that could fill that role.  One name that comes up time and time again is Patrick Lalime.  A former fan favourite in Ottawa, Lalime is a UFA to be and will be looking for work starting this weekend.  Rumours suggest he has recently bought a house in the Ottawa area and has let it be known that he would love to close out his career in Ottawa.

But would the Sens be interested?

Lalime has declined significantly the past few seasons and has started just 23 games over the past two years in Buffalo.  With that said, Lalime is known to be a fantastic teammate and would be a good guy to have warming the bench behind Anderson.

He would also likely sign for something close to the league minimum which is another obvious plus.  What do you think? Would you welcome Lalime back to Ottawa?

A quick update from Sens Development Camp as  forward Nikita Filatov has arrived and is expected to take the ice this afternoon.  The players will skate at the SensPlex from 1:30-3:00 PM today and have a scrimmage scheduled for tomorrow night.

That event is open to seasons ticket holders.

If you don't have a chance to make it out to the Development Camp, you can meet the prospects in a video now featured under the highlight tab on the home page.

No thanks on Lalime. He was a good guy, but fans will never forget the beach ball goals in the biggest games. Need to go with a relatively younger option like Garon or Conklin. I also think Turco is done, so no thanks.
So what he bought a house in Ottawa? I'm sure he'd love to live anywhere rather than Buffalo. He's also Quebecois and lived here for a while, so it's natural.

hell no. keep Lalime away from this team. we don't need to lose those 20 games. there's no reason to bring back a player for nostalgia reason. there are better back-up goalies available on the market right now. what if something happens to Andersson? what if something happens to lehner also? do we feel good about handing over the team to Lalime for over 30 games? I don't. Give the job to conklin, turco, harding maybe even auld. plenty of other fish in the sea.

Estaban -

Greiss would be great, but he's an RFA in San Jose and I think despite both Niemi and Niittymaki being signed there, they still see him as part of their future plans.

If he is available, I'd agree the Sens should take a look.

TSN is reporting the Drury is being bought out. If the money was right I could see him being a good fit as a 2nd or 3rd line center in Ottawa. Even if Zibandejad makes the team as the 2nd line center it would be nice to have a good veteran 3rd liner to eat up some minutes in a close 3rd period game or fill in on the top line if Spezza is out. He's had some injury troubles but a 1 year 2 - 3M contract would be nice.

Lalime is an option only if he Anderson gets injured during a game. If you want to give Anderson a rest or he gets injured and misses a game then Lehner plays. Basically a 3 goalie system where Anderson and Lehner get the starts and when Lehner isn't starting for Ottawa he is in Bingo and Lalime is riding the pines and taking shots in practice. In otherwords Lalime takes Matt Spezza's spot 'on' the team last year.

I would gladly welcome Lalime back in a back up role. He let in some unfortunate goals against toronto but he was a good guy and can plug the hole for a year or two until Lehner is ready to step up.

I'd have no issue with Lalime being back. Anderson is going to start 70 games anyway. If Lalime is only there to take a few starts off his back, I think that would be fine. Sure, he's not going to set the world on fire, but I'd rather see the organization bring in a good guy to play that part, rather than taking a shot on an unknown, at least you know what you're getting with Lalime.

I'll be at the practice today, will let all know how Filatov looks. Will also be at the scrimmage tomorrow night, will let all know who stands out and who looks out of place. :)

Buffalo called up Enroth whenever they wanted to give Miller a rest. We will likely do the same with Lehner. We need a goaltender who is a good teammate and who won't complain about playing 5 games a year

0 #16 TKM18 2011-06-29 09:01
The real question is can they rely on him for 20 or so games next season? He's going to be 37 in a week, missed tim last year due to a knee injury and was bumped by Enroth pretty early into the season last year. Considering there are better options available I don't see how Lalime would be an option.

I agree that the Sens should stay away from Lalime. There are better options and we have the capspace to pay a few extra bucks to get a better goalie.

As for Drury, I think he is a great team guy and all, but I wouldn't want Ottawa to even sniff at him. For 2-3 million, the price is still too high for his numbers. 89 points in 264 games with the Rangers over 4 seasons...No thanks.

Well since I'm planning on a bottom 10 finish this season (sorry to the playoff DREAMERS) ... I don't see the harm in bringing in Lalime. Think of it as the same thing Colorado did by bringing in Elliot. Give him 20 games, see what happens. No use in burning out Anderson unless by some miracle we are in the playoff race come games 50-60.

Don't really care a whole lot who we have as back up, would like to see lehner play any games to rest Anderson but as far as back up if Anderson gets hurt in a game, any warm body is good for me.
I know this will not be a popular opinion but I do not want anyone in the way of lehner playing.

My sense from management comments is that as soon as Anderson is injured, Leahner is up. That means the backup has t0 be someone who is willing to sit except for maybe ten games. Can't be a young goalie trying to develop - that would be career death. Lalime does make sense in that respect, and he could help in practice with his experience of course. But somebody like Brust may make sense as well. He's not going to be a NHL starter, he'd maxed-out, but maybe he deserves the reward of a cushie job and pay raise for a year!

-1 #29 Sensnation 2011-06-29 09:41
Definitely zero interest in Lalime. He would almost singlehandedly guarantee a lower finish. I know BM said he'd plan on having Lehner come up as the #1 if something happened to Anderson, so it sounds like a good fit for Lalime, but I really would like someone who could at least push Anderson a bit.

Still say Greiss or Harding.

Thomas Greiss? Really??

Living in San Jose for the past 5 years I have had the chance to see Greiss play and he is NOT who we want as a backup. He was never very good when he did get the chance to play behind Nabokov.

Also, to those suggest he is in San Jose's long term plans? You are extremely wrong. They could have had him backup Niemi this year and retain his backup position yet decided to go with journeyman Nittymaki. They lent him to a German team this past season and I do not see him being resigned by the Sharks.

So Thomas Greiss should absolutely not be an option.

If I was Murray, the first guy I'd go for is Mathieu Garon. He helped CBJ a TON last year. Or even bring back Alex Auld for a season. There are options out there. Isn't Johan Hedberg available too? All of these guys are legit backups who have had to step up and play the starter roll in the past, so we know if the worst was to happen we'd have a backup plan.

This would only end badly in my opinion. He gets treated okay when he's in town and some fans will respect the positives from his time here .... but the first bad goal and the fans would turn on him. Or those jackasses at the Sun would incite something on a slow news day.

Leave the past in the past. Get a bonafide backup (not a washed up starter or young guy with potential) and only play him when Anderson really needs the rest (or call up Lehner - great idea).

I think it is a really good sign and a classy move on Filatov's part. It's definitely not a primadona move. It shows he's learned something anyway. Whether the lesson is substantial or superficial is up in the air. You've gotta think that it depends now on his coaches to bring the lesson home in a careful way. If so - steal of the century. This, to me, is the biggest test of the new coach's abilities. It will be cool to watch, or maybe horrible to watch. Interesting though. I liked CC more than most others did I think, but I have to admit, CC would be terrible for this assignment! It seems perfect for the new staff though

and also showing the team, that he is prepared to work to earn his spot... I really think that he was given a very tough time in Columbus, which gave him the bad attitude that has stuck with him. I would say no to Lalime, even if he is cheap or league minimum, I am sure there are others out there we can throw a league minimum or close to league minimum salary to as well, and be a bit more confident with who is back there when Andy is getting a rest, plus, if for any reason, Andy falters, we need someone that will be sufficient enough to carry the load in net, we are not looking (well personally am not) a significant run this year, would be good for us to finish in the bottom 5 again, but am happy if they pleasently surprise and do becoming a fringe contender this year.

One thing that's perhaps more important than anything else would be how this backup contributes at practice and off the ice. Why not look for a good character guy who's got a knack for helping players 'solve' other goalies or spot weaknesses etc? Maybe this is Lalime after all. But certainly this guy should only get 10 starts if that - unless the team feels that Lehner going back and forth will hurt his development, then your backup needs about 20 starts probably.

Not sure the contractual ramifications of Lehner bouncing back and forth as well.

I see more potential in Barker who's only 25, has cup winning experience and is a previous 1st rounder,. Sure he has a few injury issues but nothing like Kuba and we aren't going to be able to trade Kuba, he's way past his worth. Maybe for a bag of pucks.

2- I don't think it would be a good idea to have Lehner bounce around from AHL to NHL and back again. He needs the full years down in the AHL to benefit him more.

3- I like the idea of Auld coming back to warm the bench.

I don't often post, and may get flamed for this, but if anyone is going to talk about Lalime in the playoffs tell the whole story, look at his numbers and not just a couple games. Sure that game 7 haunts every Sens fan, but the fact is that the Sens simply didn't score any goals. Sure Lalime cracked at the end, but I think the pressure of playing on a team that will lose if you let in 2 goals would get to most.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Lalime - check out his playoff numbers - GAA under 2 for all but the first year.

For the record I'm a huge Sens fan living in Toronto, so I got it almost as bad as Lalime did.

No. The Lalime, Elliot and Emery eras in Ottawa are over and kaput. The team is moving forward and do not need a backup who brings old baggage with them.

It is interesting that his tenure he is so often referred to as just letting in a couple of bad goals in the playoffs. He was bad in his last year or two, with a bad record and let in so many goals on the first few shots of the game it was a running joke. He is a good guy but his career is pretty much done. If Anderson is injured for a stretch I wouldn't trust the Lalime from a few years ago to fill in, and sure would not now.

Ottawa gave Lalime his biggest contract, and he has been paid millions over the years. The Sens have no obligation here and it isn't in the teams best interest to sign him now.

You know who else had good numbers?? Patrick Roy and Grant Fuhr. It doesn't mean they're still game ready though.. Past is the past.

Big no on Lalime. Big, big no.

And can someone explain why McElhinney is not an option? As far as I can see, he did well here, costs close to the league minimum, and is no better or worse than most goalies that are available?

Does it really matter who backs up Anderson? Some say shipping out Elliot 'cost us' Landeskog. For the 20 or so games the backup will see, if Lalime plays well that is great, if he plays poorly it doesn't matter unless we are in playoff contention. If we are in playoff contention that is great news and at that stage of the year could always give Lehner a handful of games if Lalime is struggling.

I guess I am just as concerned about a cohesive and hard working dressing room than I am with an impact 2nd goalie.

I really don't like the Kaberle idea. If they were going to go for another D (which I don't think they should), they should go for Ehrhoff because he prob won't sign with the Islanders. That is unless they offer him a ridiculous amount of money.

If we got Lalime I'd sign him to a two-way so he could backup Lehner in the AHL and be our 3rd backup.

What about giving Mike Brodeur a shot!?

First thing I'd do on D is get rid of Lee + Kuba and bring another guy in to fill the last spot..however easier said then done..If a team like Florida's looking to take salary I'd be so happy to get rid of these guys and bring in a guy like Barker or Ehrhoff, or any other experienced dman anyway..

I don't get the notion that we need to "bolster" or blueline.

Let Karlsson, Rundblad, Cowen, Lee and the Bingo-bound guys continue to develop while Phillips and Gonchar, um, age.

No way we buy out Kuba when we're trying to save actual money for when we need it (a few years down the road). If someone will take Kuba off our hands that's great - but won't happen until the deadline if at all.

Unless we get a legit upgrade opportunity (i.e. a real stud that allows us to let another guy go) we don't need to add on D.

He has only been a negative in the regular season one season (his last with the sharks). He is only percieved as a major defensive weakness by most because of the series with chi and bos these playoffs, giving him a -13 for the postseason this year.

I know Kaberle is better defensively but Kabs is likely to get paid about 1 mil more per year too (not like it is a big issue for us, but still). I know you can't just look at stats because there is a huge diff between sharks/van and tor. It's actually pretty impressive that kabs is a positive +/- for his career. I'm just going by what I see out of the play of Ehrhoff and I like his game.

I disagree on "he did not do well". That's just negative bandwagon statments. He had a .917 Save PCT and a 2.51 GAA playing with an AHL team in front of him. He stole us at least 2 of the 7 games he played. And frankly, 7 games is far from enough to judge an athlete..

Also, no one knows the status of Harding after his season ending injury last year (big risk), and Hedberg will 99% for sure re-sign in New Jersey.

I can't understand why people are saying we should keep Kuba unless a deal is found.
Why? so he can take a key roster spot away from one of Rundblad or Cowen, who are going to be core D-men for the next decade? so that we can trade him at the deadline for something like a 5th round pick?
It makes no sense at all to keep him around and impede the development of defensemen who deserve to be here. I'll agree that we won't find a deal for him unless Colorado/Florid a have a really, really hard time signing guys on Friday; but buying him out really doesn't hurt our cap situation: we're almost 20 million below the cap, not a big deal.
I don't hate the guy or anything but he's too old and too slow. I think that his departure is the best option for him and for the team.

I agree, I've felt for a while Cowen could use a year in the AHL. I didn't think he would be on the big team next year and got roasted for it on these boards. I think Cowen to the AHL is realistic.

I know people see him as the next Zdeno Chara, but if he doesn't develop properly, he'll be the next Chris Phillips (not a bad thing, but it'd be nice if CP could contribute offensively)

I think two years in the AHL would be the best route for Cowen. First year to perfect his shutdown game. 2nd year to work on his offense and dominate. Following the exact same path he took in the CHL.

Then when he comes up to NHL he does the same thing. Rookie season: defense. Sophomore: step it up.

About Lalime, he is no longer a reliable NHL back-up. When Ryan Miller was injured this season, Buffalo turned to Jonas Enroth to start the game instead of Lalime. That says a lot about how much Buffalo trusted Lalime.

I think we should consider Jeff Drouin-Deslauri ers. The Goalie Guild thinks he would make a good back-up:

http://twitter.com/#!/TheGoalieGuild/status/85785324785119232

There's no harm in giving him a shot. It's not like the goal of next year is to make a serious run in the playoffs. Guys like Conklin and Auld are safe options; There is nothing wrong with those guys, but they are not going to get any better. Now is the time for the Sens to try to find some hidden gems since the team is rebuilding anyway.

Maybe not a risk to Ottawa but there is a risk in setting back his development if he's up here too soon. It's not a slight on his play, he did a lot this year. It's just players of his type take a while to develop, and it might be better having him in a winning environment with less pressure where he can succeed and hone his skills rather than having him with Ottawa. Someone mentioned Chara above. If he ever turns into a poor man's Chara which would be amazing, he'll need time. It wasn't until Chara was around 24 that he really started to show what he would eventually be in the league.

People seem to love hating on him but he really started to develop nicely by the end of last season. He should get his last big shot next year. I think he will surprise. I have no problem with seeing Cowan and even Runblad in the AHL next year. It might help their development. I think people are just too impatient in Ottawa to truly support the development players. Chill. It takes time.

I don't think predicting Cowen & Rundblad in the NHL this season has to do with being impatient on their development, more just an assessment of their current skill level. They are both ready for that next stage and at this point I would rather start their NHL learning process while the rebuild is ongoing then bringing them in as rookies when we finally want to be contending again in 2-3 years. They both still have a very long way to go in their overall development, I just think it can start happening at the NHL level.

I think this is what we'll see opening night.

phillips, karlsson
gonchar, lee
rundblad, kuba

carkner

That D would get rolled over. Phillips as your regular tough guy on D? I think those expecting Cowen in the AHL are wrong, and even beyond expectations I would sure hope that group of 6 is not our regular lineup.

Are we all forgetting he almost made the team out of camp last year?

SO WHO COMES OUT?...that's the D we have, ideally you'd swap gonchar and or kuba for two way gritty defensmen but good luck with that.

Just got back from camp, day 2.

Comments:

Rundblad is going to make the team next year. His skating is light years ahead of anyone at that camp, he's a very smooth stickhandler and looks VERY confident.

Filatov and Puempel were on another ice pad practicing with the power skating coach.

Puempel looks rusty. Not unexpected based on the time off he had from his injury, but he is going to need to work on his skating big time to get to the NHL.

Filatov. Holy crap. This guy is a BEAUTIFUL skater. He has unbelievable acceleration. He can turn on a dime. His stickhandling is on another planet. Best of all, he had a huge grin on his face the entire time he was on the ice. He and Puempel were getting worked hard, but he looked like he was loving every second of it. I know it's too early to say, but based on what I saw today, he'll be in the NHL next year and he'll do very well playing with Spezza.

Well if those are our 7 Carkner has to play more just to have the physical presence back there, but as I've been saying Kuba has to go. Even if just 1 of Cowen & Rundblad are ready, it's better to give Kuba's minutes to them and Lee.

So this should read in no way should Kuba be on the team come the regular season.

Chirp what's going on with Filip Kuba. T Murray indicated that they're not shopping anyone right now, and that the emphasis will be on getting backup goaltending.

Is he going to be involved in a trade, or can he bought out/put on waivers?

They're not possibly considering keeping him around are they?

Carkner plays on the fourth line before Kuba gets bought out if you ask me.

Or maybe Gonchar or Carkner get moved - but there's not much chance of that either.

As I recall, he may have been popular, but was run out of town after our last embarrassing series loss to the leafs. He's part of a squad that had a history of underwhelming us in the playoffs. We spent a long time distancing ourselves from that era, let's not bring him back.

Best case scenario, he performs alright and we get something decent at the trade deadline.

Worst case, he sucks ass and we deal with it for one more season.

Either way, this team is going to start looking scary in 2012-2013...

Just to clarify I'm not pushing buyout, but if it's the only way then sure. A buyout is CHEAPER then paying his full salary though, and we already have the players in place who would step in so it's not like he'd buy him out to then go sign another big contract D. At most the entry level contract replacing him added to his buyout cost would equal his actual salary.

There must be some team out there that would take him for free, so let's just part ways.

Da Costa looked better today than he did yesterday, but thus far he hasn't been the best centre in camp.

Looking at all the centres in camp, the best one in my opinion has been Zibanejad, followed by Caporusso and Hoffman.

Keep in mind though, development camp is a TOUGH barometer to measure these guys against. The clincher is to see how they do at training camp in September.

But if the Senators don't add a C through trade or free agency, I'd give Zibanejad a better than 50% chance of making the team IF he continues to progress through the summer.

Yes bring your account number or season ticket holder card... whatever that is... account number will be fine. They said no prior registration is necessary.. but better to get there early.

There is also a meet and greet with the prospects.. you can get autographs etc... that is after a quick Q & A with some Senators staff... ie Randy Lee, etc.. That happens upstairs in the restaurant.
Went to it last year.. they also gave out free munchies.. but can't guarantee they will do it this year..

completely disagree with Timic,
Kuba was one of the worst D-men in the league last year.
He brings nothing, too slow ( Kessel walks arournd him ) way too soft, doesn't even hit by accident. Worse is that he seems to have no work ethic, comes from almost a year off, and seems to have gotten worse as the year progressed.
based on our new players coming in
Cowen
Rundblad
Wiercoch
and even Gyrba are all better D then he is... he cannot make this team anymore...trade him, send him down, buy him out... but please do not force you fans to endure another year of his brutal play...Anderson will freak with him in front of him!!!

In my humble opinion, I see no benefit in buying out Kuba, except perhaps that it prevents him from wasting a roster spot. But there is always a spot in the press box if he continues with his terrible play.

First off, buy-outs are useful when you need cap space. I don't think the cap is an issue for the Sens at this point. Second, this is 'real' money we're talking about and I don't think Eugene got to be a billionaire by handing out free money. Third, the cap hit (tho lessened when spread out) will extend into next year (at least) when we may actually want that extra space (remember the hits of Cheechoo et al?).

As for a trade? Here's hopin'. But I don't see any takers.
I think the best thing is to keep him for now. Best case, he plays well (Kuba actually looked like an NHL player at one time) and we can trade him at the deadline for value. Worst case, he sucks, sits in the press box, and he walks at the end of the season and takes his ENTIRE over-priced cap hit with him.

I believe we can't send him down, as per his contract.

I hate watching him too but that's my two cents.

Brian Lee, from my perspective was never as bad as some people percieved. He may not have been a 9th overall pick, however if we picked him in he 2nd or 3rd round, we would have been saying what a find. For a big man he skates extremely well, and if he could build on last year and build on his confidence, he could easily fit in the 5-6 role, and even up to the 4 spot with some experience over the next few years, he has only just turned 24 years old, with plenty of upside.

Who backs up Anderson to me really doesn't matter, as Lehner will see some games as well

We have plenty of players with much to prove next year including Lee
Regin
Foligno
If they can improve to where they should be we will be a much better team next year

Let the young guys play and learn so in 2 years when we're ready to add a few parts they're as ready as they can be to their part.

Add a cheap backup that won't rock the boat and call it a day.

He wants to play in Ottawa so I say give him the job on a 1 year contract. If something goes bad we can sign another UFA goalie that will be out there or use Mike Brodeur as a backup. With all the good goalies now there will be good ones just sitting on their couch at home in November/Decemb er so to me it is a low risk situation to resign Lalime in that way and also, our team is not expected to make the playoffs next year so does not matter who is backup as long as they can play 15-20 games.

I do not see Bryan Murray signing any UFA player(s) this season besides a back up in goal. I think this season is strictly about the rebuilding process, fitting guys in when he can and letting them develop the right way. And although I want are rookies to do great, it be be better to fall to the bottom then sink on the top. If we could draft at number #1 next year and Grab that franchise player (and believe me we are overdue for a Stamkos, Ovechkin or a Crosby) that would put the icing on the cake and do wonders for this team. When our 2012/2013 Season starts are player are ONE more year developed a few future franchise players established and a few names off the books. (http://capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=23) This team will be great and will be what one of the first teams people think of to win the stanley cup.

Michalek Spezza Butler
Filatov Zibanejad/(RFA or trade) Alfredsson
Foligno Regin C.Neil
Greening Z.Smith/Winches ter Condra

*Zibanejad is not a long shot IMO but if Murray picks up a top 6 F (Centre or Wing) through free agency, then the situation changes a bit for him. Neil on the fourth and Silfverberg on the 3rd would be nice.

Rundblad Gonchar
Philips Karlsson
Cowen Carkner
Lee

*Wiercioch is the forgotten one but has had good experience last year and could play minutes if Rundblad or Cowen are not living up to potential. Kuba will be traded or waived.

As for your list of UFA's.. we have enough of the young guys to fill the 3rd & 4th lines... need a top 2 centre... which unless Sens get Brad Richards -- not happening in this UFA bunch.

I don't want to sound like a hater, but Lalime?

No.

Aside from Ryan Miller being amazing, there's a reason he played so many games; they were scared t play Lalime.

Every once in a while, Lalime still has a really good game, but IMAGINE if Anderson got injured for more than a few games. It would be Elliott all over again in the sense that any shot could go in and the players lose confidence in their goalie.

I'd say there's about a 0.5% percent chance he has Burke-like resurgence late in his career

Lalime would be a choice, hopefully not a top choice but a good 3rd or 4th option if Bryan Murray can't sign a more effective backup. He would be a good choice to have on the team if he only needed to play a handful of games as he does have a great attitude & would be a great positive influence on some of the younger guys. That said there are at least a half dozen guys that would make better backups, Theodore, Smith, Auld or Conklin. Most would be willing to take a one year deal, then Lehner should be ready to be full time NHLer. The backup is only going to play about 20 - 25 games unless, God forbid, Anderson gets hurt. If that happens, regardless of who we sign, we're toast!!!

On another note, what about signing Michael Ryder? He's a guy who can score a few goals, would be good on the PP & might be a good winger for Spezza. Just thinking out loud on that one though...

Agreed. One of the other nice parts was his response about Hitchcock, good on him for mentioning the positives in an obviously negative situation. He's saying and doing all the right things, if he can just keep it up for another 15 yrs ;)

I'd like to see him stay next season.

Hedberg for backup goalie.

Osgood, is reasonably priced.

No new D please.

Karlsson, Rundblad, Phillips, Gonchar, Lee, Kuba, Carkner, Cowen, Weircioch, Gryba - plenty there to find a top 6 plus one.

No 3rd liner UFAs either. Either a bonafide top 6 guy who's under 30 and signs a good contract for 4 years or so (which won't happen) or stick with these guys:

Spezza, Alfie, Michalek, ZSmith, Winchester, Foligno, Regin, Neil, Filatov, Butler, Greening, Condra, DaCosta, Wick and the mess of prospects we have can all fight it out for the 12 or 13 spots.

Probably too early to know if we'd want Shannon as the 13th forward and let the rest of the guys play in Bingo/Junior so I guess he signs elsewhere. Too bad - would like to have him around but not really heartbroken over it.

Thomas Greiss? Really??

Living in San Jose for the past 5 years I have had the chance to see Greiss play and he is NOT who we want as a backup. He was never very good when he did get the chance to play behind Nabokov.

This is exactly why we should look at Greiss or Lalime. The goal is to lose as many games as possible so we can get a top 3 pick in a GOOD draft. Anderson might stop that from happening, but the possibility of an injury or his being waived (dreaming I know...) exists.

As for Lalime, sign me up. He was excellent for us in the regular season and eliminated the Flyers on his own several times. Lalime rules!!

Add a cheap backup that won't rock the boat and call it a day.

I agree. And if he does sign someone, make damn sure its for 1 year only..

I really hope the Buffalo's, Toronto's, Florida's etc.. go crazy in free agency this year since the cap went up so much... that will leave the better free agents next season for those teams that were smart enough not to overspend.. and if the cap goes down? all the better...

Rundblad's got some soft hands, Hoffman has a gorgeous wrist shot, Silfverberg has a gorgeous wrist shot, Ben Blood plays with an insane edge & he's huge, DaCosta seemed slow but also has pretty decent hands, Petersson is a lot smaller than expected but really speedy.

Can Bingo take another run at the Calder Cup... they will only get better next year.. and the year after that.

Blood has 1 more year in college.. so he and Silfverberg will be coming into the lineup in 2012/13 -- when hopefully there will be a season and no lockout. Let's hope the league and the NHLPA can start talking sooner rather than later.

Where a lot of shit went wrong, and as I have said before I heard Lalime's wife was in a car crash the afternoon of the game 7. I definitely don't forget his 3 straight shutouts against Philly? breaking it down in the 5 games only McGillis and Fedotenko beat him, Fedo in O.T game 1 and McGillis in game 5. His domination of Brodeur and the Devils : o

If were not shocked out of our minds in the coming 2 weeks our 1st line will be: Fila-Spezz-BB16 and I can't fucking wait! If BB16 isn't consistent Alfie slips back in his old spot alongside Spezza.

As for the Dev. Camp, I'm super freakin stoked. I have ALWAYS been a huge Hoffman fan (since junior) and think we may see him called up next year, He IMO will be a top 6 forward in the future or excellent trade bait (can't keep everyone) I'm hoping Z and Petersson make the big club, 9MM needs a push and if Petersson kicks him out of the top 6 he brought it on himself. At least he'll be there to score a few shorties.

As for KUBA! if we could get the Filip Fucking Kuba who played for us in his first year here I'd be all for keeping him, but WHERE the fuck did he go?

Hey SENS Fans,

I've been reading your comments all day on this thread and am sick that some are really considering bringing Patty back. My god let's forget that even his former club would not play him even if their #1 went down. Patrick completely blew his final 3 years in Ottawa, you show me all the stats you want but i watched him play in front of a near perfect defensive team and he was consistantly letting us down in the clutch. Let's start talking about REAL possibilities for our back-up which include Joey MacDonald, Josh Harding or Mathieu Garon.

Hoping to get to the scrimmage tomorrow.

Now I'm also going to go out on a limb for Lee, I still think Kopitar or M. Staal everytime I see Lee or hear his name. But for the last quarter of the season Lee was SOLID! he was there down the stretch in EVERY game yet we NEVER heard his name, meaning he wasn't making dumbass mistakes... he was doing his job and and playing 15 or more minutes a night, I have to say it impressed me. Now I don't think that earns him spot in the top 6, but with a good showing at camp at least a spot on the team. as a 3 D pairing or 7th (fill in)

I don't like prognosticating on lineups based on 2 days of development camp PRIOR to free agency.

But, I do think that on opening night next year, it will look something like this:

Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Michalek-XXXX-Alfredsson
Foligno-XXXX-Greening
Winchester-Smith-Neil

I won't even hazard a guess at the defense at this point, still too many variables, including Kuba's status and how good Cowen and Rundblad end up becoming over the summer.

Anyways, that's based only on who is under contract that I think has a spot on opening night locked up, barring a disaster at training camp.

Regin will certainly get a look at one of those C jobs....assumin g he's still around.

I also like the idea of Condra at 3rd line RW, move Greening back to his original spot at LW, and put Foligno back at C, considering that is where he played his jr.

Off topic perhaps, but there was an interesting article that reminded me of some of the magic that BM and his staff are capable of as managers of NHL talent (of course he has made MANY mistakes too, but I'm tryin to be positive).

Everyone talks about the 2003 draft with Perry and Getzlaf (btw - I'm hopin' this draft proves to be similar in terms of depth), the Luongo/Jokinen trade w/ the the Islanders, and recently with aquiring Anderson, but his record with undrafted players, in my opinion, has been phenominal.

In the wake of the draft, THN has an article rating the top 10 non-drafted NHLers, I was pleased that BM signed three of them as GM (NJ cleaned up too), and all three went on to win Cups.

Anaheim - Penner and Kunitz
Florida - Dan Boyle

Sign of things to come with the likes of Hamilton, Da Costa, Winchester and Butler, among others? Time will tell.

I am very accurate Murray is going to sign one of them and not low-ball one them Murray will probally target one of go hard after one of them and the goalies that I metioned they all make sense for the Ottawa backup. So who is the accurate one not you!

Agreed. Though out of your list I'm sincerely banking on Garon. He was amazing last season. He could handle 20 games for us easy.

Let Lehner stay in the AHL, unless Anderson gets hurt. We must prepare for the worst and an old man like Lalime is not the answer. I dont think I could look at him face to face and not cry after that game 7 vs Toronto... It hurt too much, I need more time.

I have a feeling that Murray will sign a top six forward this summer someone like what Murray did when he signed Gonchar last summer. Also I thought Murray would stand pat last summer on July 1st but it is a different story this year Murray needs to add a top six forward this year sto it won't be too much of a suprise their is a glaring hole in the top six unlike last summer their was not a glaring hole in the defence. Also Murrays priorty should be a top six forward and then Murray maybe should look to sign a backup goalie.

Here will be one of the big signing that Murray
will come out nowhere that no one expects.

1.Erik Cole
2.Ville Leino
3.Tim Connoly

I can't believe how downhill this comment section has gone. These projected lineups for next season are just brutal and it's getting a little out of hand. One thing I hope most of you notice when you post these silly lineups is how awful we look up front. There are so many question marks on this team it's not even funny.

After Spezza, we are disgustingly week down the middle. Yes we may have a lot of centers in the line-up but none of them have shown there capable of centering the second or even third lines. I feel comfortable with Smith, Winnie, and Regin as 4th line centers but nothing more. Regin has the talent but he isn't nearly strong enough on his skates or stick to be consistent at the NHL level.

0 #240 AlfieforMayor11 2011-06-30 06:14
Lastly, not to pick on ya Spezzafan19 but I see you're up to your old tricks. Why on earth would you want Murray to go out and sign a player like Cole or Connolly in a rebuilding year? These guys are injury prone marshmallows and we have enough players with health issues on our team. We need guys who can play and be healthy. If you want players like Cole, Connoly, gagne on this team then you clearly don't know what's best for the club.

sounds as though zib and silfverberg are both going to be legit top 6 guys a year from now and noesen will be that power forward with a lethal shot that can also stand in front to put in the dirty goals. im thinking hes probable most comparable to holstrom.

pretty hard not to be excited.

silfverberg looks nhl ready now so give him another year we may have a calder candidate on our hands.

Too bad about Oshie, although you had to figure St Louis would hold on to a player of his skill and style.

One more thing re: Lalime... His character (being a 'good guy in the room' or 'on the bench' means absolutely nothing if he can't stop a puck. All the goodwill he garners will dissappear if Anderson gets injured and he lets in what should be easy saves.

All I can say is that I hope Murray isn't even CONSIDERING Lalime (no offense intended to Patty).

This should put the confusion to rest. (email from Sens)

The session will be moderated by team broadcaster Gord Wilson. A meet-and-greet reception with players also follows the scrimmage. Both events will take place in Stanley’s Fresh Grill and Team Headquarters.

The scrimmage will also serve as preparation for the annual round-robin 3-on-3 tournament, which closes out the camp next Monday. Both events will be open to the public and take place on the Scotiabank ice surface at the Bell Sensplex.

Butler is an RFA. We gave him a qualifying offer (see earlier Chirp posts). Other teams can try to submit an offer sheet though.

The fact that he signed here just last year in the first place means there's about 0 chance we don't resign him. Could be confirmed already just not announced until the other RFAs are confirmed as well.

Bah was in the same folder, chose the wrong email, here's 2011, lol

After last summer’s inaugural evening scrimmage (5-on-5), the event will once again be featured at this year’s camp on Thursday, June 30, at 7 p.m. at the Bell Sensplex. The scrimmage will be followed by a meet and greet reception with Senators season-seat holders in the fieldhouse on the lower level of the Sensplex.
- The annual 3-on-3 tournament is set to take place at the Bell Sensplex on Monday, July 4, at 9:45 a.m.

All on-ice workouts, including the team scrimmage and 3-on-3 tournament, are open to the public

So only the Meet & Greet is for STH.

Nothing on teams yet.

Wow, what a comment section. I don't remember EVER seeing one so long. The topics of line combo's really pissed people off. I personally don't get into them, don't mind reading them so much, but really... there isn't much else for some to post about.

Filatov - I was so excited hearing the news when BM made the trade for this kid. I always felt he had the talent to be an explosive player in the league, but didn't have the chance in CBJ, or the team around him to prove it. He's only 21, for a team to give up on a potential superstar so quick is absurd. But, another teams mental lapse is Ottawa's gain.

Rundblad - Another amazing snag during a draft where BM showed why he's a talented GM. Will Tarasenko live up to it? There's so much that can be said about this kid, I can't wait to see him in an Ottawa Jersey.

Lehner - Great talent, will eventually be our #1. But needs his AHL experience. Let him stay down and win another Calder, it'll only help us later.

I think Drury would make a great adition on the third line with Neil and Winchester maybe. He's not a scoring center, but he plats with a lot of grit and brings leadership for the younger guys. I would say it would be a good move (for the right price that is).
