Next Up- Free Agency

With the NHL Entry Draft now in the books, the next date of interest is just four days away.  The NHL's free agent market will open July 1 at 12:00 PM and while the Sens don't figure to be huge players, they will try to add a couple pieces to the puzzle.

At the top of Bryan Murray's Wish List- Another forward who can play in the team's top six and a goaltender to back up Craig Anderson.

It has been well documented that this year's free agent group is fairly weak.  There certainly isn't a ton of high end talent to be had so I'm really not expecting that busy of a day in the Nation's Capital.  With that said, I do expect Murray to do at least a little bit of shopping, especially when you consider the fact that the Sens have so much cap space heading into next season.

As far as top six forwards go, Brad Richards, Jussi Jokinen and Ville Leino appear to be among the best options available. After the weekend purge in Philly, you would expect they will do everything they can to keep Leino around. Brad Richards is the top UFA this off season and is out of the question.

Jokinen on the other hand is a guy that will hit the market and I would expect Murray to at least kick tires on that front.

Jokinen has scored 49 goals over the last two seasons and is deadly in the shootout.  He will be looking to cash in when the market opens.  Jokinen will get at least $4 mil a season and on a long term deal (three or more years).  Murray will make a call but the price and term are likely going to be a little too rich for the Sens.

Other names that may be of interest include Brooks Laich, Tomas Fleischmann and Simon Gagne.

As far as a back up goalie goes, I think we'll see the Sens go with the most affordable option. With Anderson expected to get the bulk of the games and Lehner pushing hard from Bingo, there is no reason for Murray to spend big here.  Expect to hear names like Conklin, Turco, Auld, Harding, and Garon thrown around.

At this point, the only certainty is the Sens signing a goalie. Murray has indicated he would like to add another forward but that definitely isn't a must and he isn't going to overpay. For a team in a rebuild, you could easily justify going with the group they have and letting some of the young guys battle for those top six spots.

  • The Sens also have eight restricted free agents that they will need to deal with as well.  Qualifying offers for those players are due today at 5:00 PM.  Will try to dig up a little more information on this because there's a good chance not all of the RFAs will be receiving a QO.
  • The Ottawa Senators will kick off their annual development camp beginning tomorrow in Ottawa.  All ten of the players drafted by the Sens this weekend are expected to be in attendance.  Expecting more information on the camp to be released today. Will add it to the bottom of this post when it becomes available.

We need to sit on our hands on July 1st. Unless we can get Richards for a decent price then don't try and sign anyone for a few days. Signing early will lead to overpaying guys.

Let our kids get a shot at the big show next year and see what talent in our system can do. Worst case scenario is that we get another lottery pick next year and then become a true contender instead of an also ran.

I believe it has been said that all of Ottawa's 2011 picks will attend the development camp, but Chirp posted earlier on twitter that Filatov will not make it in time. I'm guessing all the otehr notable prospects will be there, including the swedes.

I agree with @ riceroni. We're in a rebuild so we should relax on July 1 and only bring in people who factor in long term. No quick fixes here. I like Leino. I also think we need to bring in a fighter - it's been suggested that someone like Zenon from NYI would be a good middle weight to bring in. Eugene has to be pleased in all of this as the fan base is basically telling him to hold on to his money while we build through the draft and the prospects in the system.

Another vote for standing still on 1 July. Give the kids that we think are only 3rd and 4th liners an opportunity to prove us wrong.

It's not like we are only 1 or 2 free agency signings away from being a contender.

Rebuild people, unless we can land Richards and Laich, I think that would put an end to the rebuild but I doubt it. Murray did not pick a shitload of players just to nix the rebuild plan, let them develop, were not going anywhere standing wise.

You people called for a rebuild, its gonna take 2-3 years.

Murray filled the cupboards with prospects this draft, I really doubt that the plan is to bottom out again, but to consistently draft assets with high ceilings. This team, while rebuilding, can still remain competitive with UFA signings as long as those signings aren't for more than a term of 2-3 yeas when we all expect those prospects to be ready.

It should be fairly easy to get a goalie pretty cheap, there seems to be an oversupply of decent goalies around. How long would he be looking to sign someone, just a one year deal? They can't really expect to keep Lehner in Bingo after this year, assuming all goes well down there next season. Laich would be nice but his numbers seem kind of Fisher-like, do we really need another guy like that? I don't think he's a bonafide #2, he was playing with some pretty decent talent in Washington that he wouldn't have here.

I agree with SC. I wouldn't take Filatov not being in Ottawa on Tuesday to mean anything at all. He learned only on Saturday that he'd been traded. It's not like he's in Kitchener ... It's a long flight. Also, BM talked to him and he's excited so he gets every benefit of the doubt as far as I'm concerned.

No team hopes for another lottery pick unless its name is Edmonton Oilers. I expect Murray to sign a top 6 forward on July 1st be it Jokinen,Leino,L aich etc. Alfie will be healthy again next season,Spezza just finished the best year of his career in terms of two-way play as the go-to guy, we'll finally have a good goaltender in place,a blue chip forward prospect in Filatov and a bunch of young talent coming through - Cowen,Rundblad and some AHL champs. We'll see how the year goes but don't expect to see Murray act like we won't be much better than we were last season

Turco is way over the hill. It's unfortunate he didn't get the hint to retire when Dallas wouldn't renew him.

Out of the UFA market, I hope we go for someone with a bit of a track record but that is still relatively young. Josh Harding and Thomas Greiss come to mind. Varlamov on the RFA market may be worth a look as well if Washington decides he's not their guy or would trade him at a reasonable price as they have 3 good young goalies.

THN's scout report on Filatov:

ASSETS: Is an explosive skater with slick moves and a keen ability to light the lamp. Has game-changing shiftiness and excellent offensive instincts.

FLAWS: Must add bulk to his 6-0 frame in order to maximize his scoring potential in the NHL. Needs to work on his defensive-zone coverage and increase his level of intensity.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Highly-skilled winger with defensive and consistency issues.

Sounds a lot like Kovalev, good thing he is not still here to mentor him in his lazy enigmatic ways. If Filatov wants to play here I think he is worth a shot, good move by BM.

The guys we picked this year wont play for another 2 years. Right now we have a pathetic top 6, with a decent D corps that still needs development. We have a solid goalie.

Filatov Spezza Butler
Michalek Regin/Foligno Alfie

That is pretty bad, that has to be one of the most injury prone top 6 I've ever seen.

Whispers keep rolling around that Lalime bought a house in Ottawa and that the Sens intend to sign him. I must say, I'd be torn, but Lalime was a good goaltender here in Ottawa so for 10 games a year, he could be alright.

As far as forwards go I could see Murray inquiring about Laich and Jokinen, but the tag may be too high. Laich would be awsome for his leadership qualities alone.

What about Samsonov to give a Russion comrad for Filatov? Just saying..

Other choices would be Leino, Ryder, Connolly, Cole, Fleischmann, Upshall,Miettin en, Larose (who has been a Sen killer),Talbot, Dupuis,...

Who are potential #1s? Harding and Greiss? Varlamov may be one for sure, but remember we still need at least 1 more potential starter for the future. I doubt Lehner will flop, but we have to have a backup plan in case of injury. Harding and Greiss still have enough potential, but at the same time have such little track record that they will still be backups at this stage in their careers.

I could see there being a problem with Varlamov though, he's almost a starter as it is, so maybe he would not welcome the backup role.

Umberger is a very poor man's 2nd line player, not really what the team needs. Johansson would require significantly more than that, he's got pretty high projections for his career. Oshie makes the most sense if he's available, but Laich or even keeping Foligno at C seem like the best "free" options imo.

With a first line maybe consisting of Filatov, Spezza and perhaps Alfredsson we should do well enough if Alfredsson doesn't need a rest and Filatov was only in need of a playmaking center. the line should instantly Gel. A second line that should also focus on scoring is in need of a center. Wingers Nick Foligno who is 1/3 left Wingers and Milan Michalek a true Right Winger maybe be able to step up Peter Regin or Stephane Da Costa's Game. Bobby Butler shouldn't be demoted and should have a better shot then Michalek or Foligno for that matter at the second line but due to salary they better pony up. a third line that consist of offensive ability as well as remaining Defensive Center Colin Greening and RW Erik Condra should do just fine. So that third line Left wing position is Available. and finally for the fourth line a smash mouth Gritty Grinder Line that can also chip in with the odd Goal Centers Winchester & Smith and RW Neil.

I can see Murray making 1 more minor move...we aren't going to compete for the cup but we don't want to float around the bottom either. Melnyk wants to make a profit this year so cutting salary is one thing, but you still have to sell tickets. I for one, would pay to see the young guys COMPETE every game and battle for the 8th spot right up to the end of the season. If not, oh well, but bottoming out to get a pick will result in a monetary loss (not the plan).

I don't think people realize that the lines are constantly shaken up shift to shift and game to game. Does it really matter who is on what line? As long as they all contribute, we'll be fine. Just look at what Bingo's depth did for them! I'm hoping MacLean will bring that from Detroit, though I know that the Red Wings did heavily rely on their top players.

So Butler doesnt even play? Alfie is not 1st line material anymore, he is 2nd/3rd line. The way Spezza and Butler finshed the year, how can you seperate them. Alfie can play with Regin & Michalek.

I think Umberger fits our needs perfectly, I don't think he'll be cool with 3rd line duties... Unless they put him or Carter on the wing, which is of course possible but BM should try and pry Umberger.

CBJ: Gonchar (Doubt Gonch waives though)

Ott: Umberger

Straight up.

Then Sign Bieksa, Wisniewski, Erhoff, Hannan, or even Jovanovski for the right price. A leader by example who would shore up and compliment our Blueline rather nicely.

Jovanovski Karlsson
Phillips Runblad
Cowen Carkner

Then do Kuba/2nd/O'Brie n for Gabby

Sign Chad Larose

Fila Spezz BB16
Gabby Berger Alfie
9MM Larose Niky71
Greening Smith Nailer

Another of many possibilities.

Butler should be on that first line I agree, but! this maybe Alfredsson's last year. I just wanted to make sure he was on line 1 to finish his year (if that is the case, i can't speak for him and I do hope he is back for more years to come) Butler will play in the minors and on call ups to replace Michalek which I assume is seconds away from injury his knee. or even Condra's spot he can take. I just dislike LW playing on RW vis versa.

He's decent for sure, just personally don't feel like he's a good enough 2nd line player. Would rather see the young guys we have get a chance over trying to acquire him. I wouldn't cry though if we got him, probably just a personal thing on my end.

Gonchar wont waive to go to CBJ...

That would be a nice line up, no doubt, IF we were contenders...We re in a rebuild, Murray wont bring in a 7.5Mil cap hit (Gabby) who is amost 30 years old.

Umberger fits a little better, since his cap is half that but only 2 years left instead of 3 for Gabby.

Exactly, Laich would be a much better fit then Umberger. Also, don't forget that a lot of Umberger's numbers you quoted from the last few seasons were done with some of his time spent on the 1st line, so they're a bit inflated from his normal role on most teams.

You have to wonder if Richards is looking for that big contract might sign a 2 year - league max deal in Ottawa, not only does that give us a great 2nd line center, it also keeps him from being on another team. Now the only problem might be why would he want to play in Ottawa? He's clearly looking for a fat contract or he would have let Dallas trade his rights already.

I dont mean tanking on purpose, I just mean we should do whatever possible to be in a good position come draft 2012. Players like Yakupov and Galchenyuk dont come along very often.

@Tookie,

While I agree Yakupov looks like an amazing talent and would be an amazing addition to Ottawa's forward prospects on the left side, I'd also say it is too early to be determining projections and saying "we need this guy". Think of Couturier, he was a "lock" based on the year prior, and went 8th overall.

Also, you are very quick to say "this or that sens prospects may not develop" which is 100% possible. But you are very quick to say Yakupov is the real deal.

I pesonally wouldn't be totally against telling Nicky that the 2nd line C is his to lose in training camp, but at the same time have a back up plan (Umberger) ect.

Right out of the gate I've always like Ladd, Sharp and Umberger. All 3 could have been had multiple times the last 3 or 4 years. Get one of them BM. Sharp isn't happening (yet, UFA after next year) Ladd is not happening (unless the Jets are stupid) so put together a package and land us RJ, then sign a forward or 2 July 1, a goalie, and get rid of Kuba.

Come on Howsen, you know you wannnntttttt to

I have a feeling Laich is going to get at least $4 million on the open market, I'm expecting $4.5 million. He'll probably want a longer term deal too, and with the weak UFA crop this year he can demand that. If he wants to come back for a decent amount and term sure, but why would he want that? A playoff team would probably be willing to offer him a better contract and term.

My hat is off to Murray after this past weekend's draft. I was a little disappointed when Landoskog was drafted by Colorado and a little miffed when NYI took Strome. But, when it was announced that we got Filatov(sp?) for a third round pick..... I was ecstatic! I think Filatov(sp?) will flourish in a top six role and on top of that, it is a contract year as well which should give him extra incentive to play harder.

The development camp is for prospects who are still a ways away. Its so the brass can gage how far along players are in their development and what they need to work on in the off-season. Filatov is 21 and has a real shot of cracking the top 6. He needs to focus on his offseason training and get ready for real camp.

As far as free agency goes, a backup is a must, but the second group of free agent forwards listed seems to be a better fit. Laich or Fleischmann to be would be the best fit.

I think the deals will get done, but only for those players the Sens see a long term future for (with the Sens). Brian Murray mentioned, earlier in the summer, that they will have to make some hard decisions on some players. and that some of these decisions may not be real popular with the fans. That is why I asked the question. I'm more curious about who they qualify then I am scared of losing someone. Most of these guys are depth players, and I can't see Murray wanting to keep them all.

I think BB, Daugavins and Condra are locks. Wick is highly likely.

Kinrade looks like a casualty, and Jason Bailey may be young enough to warrant another contract that keeps him between ECHL and AHL.

The hard choices I think are Bass and Potulny. Both deserve to at least play in the AHL again next year, but both are fringe NHLers that may deserve a chance on another team and are probably looking for 1 way contracts. I'd personally let Bass go for his sake and try to retain Potulny on a short deal to see if he can make it out of camp.

T. Ruuttu, P. Stastny, R. Umberger, there's Oshie (If T Yost is right)

Or I thought, Offer:

Wiercioch and 2nd to Washington for Marcus Johansson.

Umberger? Now that would be a funny one. After what he commented on his twitter about Filatov leaving... I don't think there is any way in hell he would come to Ottawa. Personally after seeing that... I would not want him.

I think I read or heard somewhere that Richards would prefer not to go somewhere where there is a lot of media pressure. If true, you would think the big market teams are out.
I think the reason why he would not waive his no-trade was that he was going to July 1st.... and did not want to see other teams waste picks/prospects on him -- when he most likely would not be going there.

Personally 99.9% chance he does not come to Ottawa... but if he did.. how pissed of with Burkie be?

Agreed that there's no need to bottom out. I hope however than any FA signing (of any significance/co st) is only for a guy that will be around 2-3 years from now and still productive - and then only if it's a guy we couldn't get the same level of player a few years from now. So to me that's Laich at a reasonable price or a guy like Richards or Jokinen for some stupid cheap price (which will never happen).

If I'm Murray I make a some fair offers to those guys, find a cheap goalie and leave it at that. If any of the three seem interested pitch them on the city, the organization etc, but don't up the offer much.

There's no point in spending to the cap just yet - let Melnyk rest his checkbook for a season or two until we really need to max out.

And if we're approaching the deadline we sell - no matter what. If someone wants Kuba, Gonchar etc we happily take their draft picks from them. DO NOT BUY AT THE DEADLINE.

The Sens have about a 70% chance of missing the playoffs this year I would say. We have a lot of young unproven talent coming into their first full NHL year. The future looks bright but we have some holes to fill....

The 30% chance I give to them is if Anderson puts on a clinic all year.

Not trying to be a downer but realistically we gotta wait for these young guns to develop in the NHL....Takes at least 1 full season...

I think last years success at the end of the season was a preview of things to come. Young players that aren't content with taking a paycheck home, they're hungry to win. Now that alone won't win you a cup, but a healthy Spezza and a healthy Alfy in a new offensive system run by MacL could be a recipe for success. GO SENS GO!

Really surprised with Bass.. great character, hard working guy.

I guess too much going into the lineup this year coming out from junior, college or Elmira -- Petersson, Wacey Hamilton, Cannone, Caporusso & most likely Da Costa... someone had to go to make room for the 3 or 4 coming in.

THe AHL is not the NHL...I was extremely happy for Bingo and how well they played down the stretch and in the post season but that same team would be in last place if they played 82 NHL games. We have the right pieces but it's gonna take time for them to fit...

Everybody was quite fine when we are all saying at the end of game 82 of this past season that it might be another year or 2 before we get playoff hockey again, just cause we had a great draft isn't going to make our team instantly better.

We will for sure place better than we did last year, I have no doubt, but I'm not getting my hopes up for the playoffs just yet....

I have seen him play, and I also believe he is lights out. I'm not saying that he is bad.

But, Sean Couturier put up nearly the same point totals, (in the 2009-2010 season) as an under ager. AND was a +62 rather than a -2. I'm not one to put much into +/-, but that is no coincidence.

My point is, everyone thought Couturier was unreal in his underage year, and he got drafted 8th this year. Hard to project even next year for these kids, let alone that they will be all stars in the NHL.

Having said that, I do agree he looks amazing, just not ready to give the 1st overall yet.

Let's analyze the teams:
Shoe-ins - Washington, Boston, Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Tampa Bay
Crap pile - Florida, NYI, Winnipeg, Toronto
Competing for a playoff spot - Philly, Buffalo, NYR, Ottawa, Carolina and maybe Montreal

So a 3 in 6 shot to take one of the final 3 playoff spots, or 50% chance :)

It seems most fans forget the Ottawa Senators won't be the only team improving this off-season. In fact Ottawa should be improving nearly the least of all teams in the NHL. We're not in a position to be spending big on free agents. Save the cap room for our young players as they develop.

On paper the Senators right now are a bottom five team in the NHL. If Alfie isn't healthy and back to normal than we're probably bottom three if not worse. Anderson is really the only reason Ottawa didn't lose the vast majority of their remaining games. How long he can keep that kind of stellar play up for is anybodies guess.

Try to find 5 - Top Four D and Top Six F groups worse than Ottawa's. It's not easy to do.

Ottawa Senators Top-6F are better than:
1. Florida (Maybe)
2. Nashville

Ottawa Senators Top-4D are better than:
1. Carolina
2. Colorado
3. Columbus
4. Dallas
5. Edmonton
6. Florida
7. Minnesota
8. New Jersey
9. Islanders
10. Tampa Bay

Just taking a quick look at rosters before free agency this is where I'd say on paper the Sens are better. In terms of top six forwards we're better than almost nobody. In terms of defense I'd have to give the benefit of the doubt that Ottawa has a better group than about 10 current NHL rosters. However those rosters will probably fill up a little bit over free agency and some will inevitably pass Ottawa.

You want 5 teams worse than the Sens, try NYI, Edmonton, Florida, Toronto, Colorado, Winnipeg, Minnesota and that's just to start. I'd say Montreal is worse, but the goaltending and coaching there make it debatable. I don't see how you can expect bottom 3-5 when we finished 5th worst last year with no goalie and a good amount of injuries and 1 attitude problem. No Alfie for part of this year would be just like no Alfie for part of last year, we can deal with it.

You can't compare our top 6 to other teams' because it isn't finalized yet. Even if you look at last years rosters, the argument is void because we have a completely different coaching staff in place.
Also, I noticed that you left goaltending AND coaching out. These are two areas that the we definitely have a leg up over most teams.

not to mention leaving out PP, PK, Faceoffs, and other intangibles.

top-6 doesnt mean a thing if all your PK units are made up of bottom-6 players.

and without an predetermined top-6, I can garantee you the compete level on our squad will be higher that 25+ other teams in the league. Theres minutes to be earned on our team. You can't say that about every team in the league.

Interesting how Don Brennan compared Mika Zibanejad to Mike Fisher. I can bet the house that Brennan has never even seen Z play, and is basing his assumption on a couple of youtube videos.

This http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Columnists/Brennan/2008/06/21/5947311-sun.html is what Brennan thought of Erik Karlsson when he was drafted.

Wonder if he changed his opinion.

Moral of the story, don't listen to those knuckleheads from the Sun. Their ridiculous.

I love my Sens but let's face it - their top 3 in Spezza, Alfie & Michalek can't stay healthy for a full season.
Butler has played about 30 NHL games. He has great potential but still basically a rookie.
Filatov -- what do we have with him?
Regin or Foligno.. right now are either of these two legimate top 6 forwards. I really like them both but I have to be realistic.

NO to any more 3rd or 4th line players. The young guys will fill the roles around Neil, Winchester, & Foligno or Regin.

The Sens really need a 2nd line centre. But what UFA's are out there that are good enough to do the job, other than Richards, Laich.

I don't want Murray to 'settle'. Go with what you have & let it be as it shall be.

Next off-season will be better UFA's or RFA's for which some teams won't have cap room. You know that with the cap going up 5M there will be some stupid GM's that will go to the cap & get in trouble in 2012/13.

Some of you people need to stop obsessing about our top six forwards and what they look like, as compared to other teams.

First of all, we have just begun rebuilding/reto oling. Secondly, take a look at Boston's top six. It's not like they are the best in the league. But they were the best all-round team with solid defense and goaltending.

You can obsess about the top 6 forwards all day long, I'll be obsessing about our top 12 forwards, our top 6 dmen and our best two goalies. Chumps.

Great draft btw. Zibanejad, Noesen, Puempel, Prince and Filatov. Can't wait to see what Hockeysfuture.c om has to say about or depth now.

I think your missing the point guy.

This isn't NHL 11 or fantasy hockey. Having an all-star top six is nice, but almost guarantees you will have SERIOUS holes somewhere else on your roster. I'd much rather Ottawa focus on getting a good young team that all pulls in the same direction, and is solid from top to bottom. That includes forwards top and bottom six, dmen and goalies (see Boston).

That goes double, considering we are just beginning to rebuild our roster with all kinds of young kids coming into the system.

I'm not exactly sure how anyone could argue about such a thing...

I'll be so happy when the sens shut both of you up this season!

Sorry but you are so wrong:
Isles had 5 20+ goal scorers, almost 3 30+ (JT had 29)
Edmonton is in the same boat as us. Being stacked in one position but dry in the other.
Colorado is a very nice team, just fell apart for some reason. Also wouldn't have been as bad without Elliot

John Q:

I don't dispute that for one second. In fact, I know full well that at the end of the day, it is the third line that wins playoffs.

However, you missed my point...you asked why people were obsessing over the top 6. I answered why they were.

I am more confident than most around here. Replace Elliott with Anderson, which of course happened, and I would bet would would have been at least 10 points higher than where we finished. Now, add a healthy alfie and (hopefully) better year from some players that had their worst year ever, and we are fighting for a playoff spot. Have I mentioned the coach yet?

Have a couple of breakouts from Regin, butler, etc and a "standard" year from the vets and we are in the playoffs. I refuse to believe that the team became an expansion team in one year.

Not saying we are cup bound, but we are FAR away from needing to throw in the towel in June!

Off topic (again) the Leafs (yeah I know) did not qualify 3 players.. two of which were Christian Hanson & Fabian Brunnstrum.

A few years ago.. Brunnstrum sold himself to the highest bidder. Dallas does not want him. Now neither does Toronto.. Is he done in the NHL?
Wasn't Hanson a sought after college UFA?

Is it the players or the teams they played on?

I think garon should be our target for backup. Like having a 1B goalie. We should stand pat up front. Unless we can trade for Stastny or sign Richards. Laich and all the others suck eggs big time. This new SENS team should never settle for second best.

Here's an observation I think TOOKIE - DORK - And Tyrant Wee are the same guy. When we get fed up with one the other guy shows up all of a sudden. These guys are frustrated LEAFS fans so sad. I think they visit all the sights and dribble on and on. What a LIFE.

Anyways stoked about how our SENS are starting to look now. I think FILATOV will figure it out. He wasn't the RUSSIAN captain at the world juniors for nothing - there is a heart in there. He's a proud guy - put up with a lot of crap in COLUMBUS.
