Last Day of the NHL Season

One way or another, today is the last day of the NHL season. With Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals set to go in Vancouver tonight, the last two teams will join the other 28 in the harsh realities of a long off season.  Even though the Sens weren't involved, having playoff hockey to watch helps ease the pain of the Sens season being over.

Tonight, the NHL off season starts for real.

Yesterday, the Senators took care of one of their biggest off season priorities. In Paul MacLean, it seems pretty clear that the Sens have a real personality at the head coach position. You can only determine so much from one day of interviews but I definitely like what I see in MacLean.

For Murray and MacLean, the job now becomes seeking out assistant coaches. Rick Wamsley and Luke Richardson are both expected to be part of the staff but it's not yet known in what capacity. The name of Mark Reeds has come up as a possible addition. The head coach of the Owen Sound Attack won coach of the year in the OHL and is close with MacLean. Seems like a logical fit.

For now, it looks like Kurt Kleinendorst will return for another season behind the Binghamton bench.

Have mentioned this in the past but I was told again that the Sens are working on contracts for Bobby Butler and Erik Condra. That doesn't mean the other RFAs aren't also going to get offers but it's pretty clear that the Sens may have to let a couple guys walk.  Considering the success of the team down in Bingo, there are going to be some tough decisions to make this off season.

Wick, Kinrade, Daugavins, Bailey, Bass and Potulny are all restricted free agents.

I know I said we would get into some draft talk today but I think I'll hold off on that until tomorrow.

After tonight, we'll also know who wins the first ever SensChirp Playoff Pool. It's gonna come down to the wire with a handful of team's all within striking distanceand online site Betfair having a last minute flurry of bets on who will come out victorious.  Good luck to everyone that is still in the hunt.

Enjoy Game 7 everyone! Predictions?

Went Golfing yesterday and ended up paired with Dave Schreiber! (Voice of the sens).

We talked about the sens drafting situation ect, but he told me that he knows the sens aren't big on couturier at all - which is kind of upsetting.

He also told me he hates Dean Brown ahaha

How does he know that... did the Sens tell him?

Someone from there must have, thats just what he told me, thought I'd let people know.

Dave Cameron as one of the assistant coaches...dear lord I can see him as head coach if the team struggles.

Looks like Melnyk is picking the future head coach...

I second whoever was talking about Grimaldi earlier. Honestly I think if the Sens were to gamble for a boom or bust with the 21st pick Grimaldi is for sure one of the players I'd be looking at. He has Gionta written all over him.

However considering Grimaldi might slip past 21 perhaps Ottawa would be better served to try and combine a couple 2nds and a 3rd to pick up another late 1st and get him then.

I'm very disappointed in Cameron being named the assistant coach unless he somehow has a lot of history with Mclean already. It reeks of Melynk meddling and the last thing the team needs is someone undermining the new head coach. I really wonder how the fans will react next year as the team learns a whole new system with young players - I expect it to be a difficult season - I really hope they don't turn on a guy who could be a great coach if we give him and the team time to build.

The article says Cameron has spoken to Melnyk, Murray, and Maclean (M, M, &M) so I assume all 3 had some input on his hiring. It also says Cameron coached Bingo from 2004-2007 meaning he has experience coaching Spezza and Neil. On paper his resume looks decent for an assistant coach. As long as he and Maclean don't but heads I think we have a good signing here.

No matter how or if Cameron is qualified as an assistant coach... Melnyk opening his mouth at the Memorial Cup... will be seen as HE is the one appointing Cameron not McLean or Murray.
I know Melnyk is a compassionate hockey fan... but he has to learn to keep his mouth shut and let his 'hockey people' run the hockey team. They are way more qualified to do it.
I would think there would be better candidates for assistant coach... like Cunneyworth or somone along that line... KK?
I just concerned with the reported yelling & screaming he does at his players... will not work with the veterans in the NHL. I keep seeing Hartsburg... I hope I'm wrong.

Lets not forget his solid job of coaching in the gold medal game at the world juniors!

The question is.... if it wasn't for his association with Melnyk... would he even be considered for a NHL assistant coaching job?

Hi All!
With Weber and Parise set to go to arbitration, could we see a blockbuster trade(not so much with Nash.)but with NJ? Their 4th and Parise for ?????. Thoughts? It would certainally address the need for a top six forward. Man, what a deal Ottawa would have to come up with.....

Parise would be nice, so would the 4th overall but I still think trading Kuba for anything at all would be a bigger deal.

It would probably cost the best part of our defensive prospects. As good as Parise is.... I'm not for trading away something Murray took 3 yrs to build.

P Mac doesn't strike me as the type who would take, and put up with that type of shit. Cameron will fast realize this is not the OHL if he tries to step on P Mac's feet IMO.

For the record I'd have been pretty pissed had he been named coach, as an Ass. coach he can kept under control
